What a lovely analysis! I must have heard this performance 100+ times and I still learned quite a few interesting things from you. I hope Epica will become a regular on your channel, watching you discover them was really fun
@@annavaskelainen Hi Anna! How nice of you to respond, I really appreciate it :) When it comes to song suggestions, I highly recommend "Code of Life" from their new album: ua-cam.com/video/-bJa37g7qbg/v-deo.html or Once Upon a Nightmare: ua-cam.com/video/pNs_pMdZGrw/v-deo.html
Yes indeed. Though I do not speak or read it, I am totally here for my needed dose of Finnish. :) To my, delight, I did catch for the first time, even without the subtitle help, that "Äänikoutsi" was most likely, "Voice coach" due to remembering that Marko Hietala's "Isäni ääni" was Finnish for, "My Father's Voice". It put a smile on my face after reading the subtitles to realize that it seemed that was correct! :D
AFAIK Simone did have classical singing lessons starting at age 15. She had "pop" singing lessons for a year before that, but switched after hearing (Tarja era) Nightwish :-)
Simone was 16 weeks pregnant during this show, and she already sang a few songs (and a lot more to go). Hat off to her. Also, there are some YT videos recorded a long time ago with Floor and Simone having some semi-musical fun together in Simone's apartment. They were still very young then.
...other goodies from these metal ladies are also "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" and "Sweet Curse". Simone's "Rivers" is also cool one (of course she has lots of other goodies too) 🤗
And I always thought that Mandarin would be a problem for me to learn but Finnish does sound like it would be a great way to get the prize for the MOST difficult lingo to master after my native American English. It does sound delightful coming ftom you though.
Our Dutch angels!! Please also listen to Anneke van Giersbergen, she's the godmother (not in age) of Dutch female metal and she lured Floor and Simone into metal.
I don't know how I managed to miss this one, I love your reactions, Epica and Floor. I must have been asleep. My bad! I love that you got to meet Floor the other day too. So much singing talent in one photo. Thanks for taking the time to write the CC captions. Always appreciated by goblins like me that only speak one language.
That was a beautiful analysis Anna!! Their chemistry on stage is absolutely great!!! Another great duet is within Temptation together with Aneka singing "somewhere " have a nice weekend!!!
@@annavaskelainen so glad to read this because BEFORE to do it i just wrote the same!that duet its amazing at black simphony but also they did it again after 10 years of aniversary..it´s so nice to hear how their voices still make beautifull harmonies despite the years and both having fun with this duet. Trully worth it and a lot to make analysis for vocals trainners like me. Anna you have a newhappy suscriber at me!
great reaction! of course all nightwish fans are going to say you have to see Stabat Mater Dolorosa but hope you don't watch it yet it's beautiful how they sing that song but it's also nice to see who the band epica actually is, and be warned epica is a bit heavier than nightwish and in some songs has the 2 guitarists who do the growling in this song there is a bit of growling from mark jansen the guitarist see if you like it same show retrospect, Epica - Chasing The Dragon LIVE Retrospect
Anna great job with your reaction and analysis of Sancta Terra from Epica feat Floor Jansen .Both Singer have Amazing Angelic Voices and pro-form well together . Great job with the video.
It seems to be part of Floor's versatility that she can adapt her voice to harmonise with anyone. Simone, Marco, Henk Poort, Ayreon's Valley of the Queens where she harmonises with Anneke van Giersbergen and Marcela Bovio and others where the harmonies are always perfect. I saw in a comment on another video that Floor and Simone once shared a vocal coach but I haven't been able to confirm that.
I even (once upon a time) read a name on that vocal coach, so that would support that claim. However I also read Floor once upon a time was Simones vocal coach, which is definitely untrue. So it is always sketchy to rely on comments. I do know for a fact they lived the same area in the Netherlands (near Reuver) when they started their careers. And how many good classical vocal coaches could there be in that area?
@@vogel2280 Just found this on Music Hub Amanda Somerville is a singer-songwriter and operatic vocal coach from United States, who resides in Germany. She is a member of symphonic metal band Epica, a member of power metal supergroup Avantasia, a member of their duo project Kiske-Somerville with singer Michael Kiske and a member of female band Exit Eden. She was also the vocal coach of Simone Simons and Floor Jansen.
For all Floor Jansen fans: Singer Floor Jansen confesses to Flair: 'I thought metal was terrible music' Floor Jansen (39) tours the world as lead singer of the metal band Nightwish and recharges in her house in the woods in Sweden. When she participated last year with 'Beste Zangers', the Netherlands finally got to know her. "Somehow I like that, stupid huh?" She initially did not know the program with which she broke through in the Netherlands, nor did the other artists who participated. She has been living with her Swedish husband Hannes - with whom she had daughter Freja in 2017 - in Sweden for five years and doesn't watch Dutch television. Why did she participate? She was impressed by the footage she saw. Besides, there was a good chance that through her this would make people curious about metal in general and Nightwish in particular. In the last episode she sang Phantom of the opera together with Henk Poort in an unparalleled way, the footage went all over the world. And now the whole of the Netherlands knows who Floor Jansen is. She is relaxed at one of the tables in the lounge. Denim jacket, jeans, long dark hair. Around her, people are busy making calls or working on their laptops. In between, Floor is in a calm state of being. She drinks tea, speaks softly, almost shyly. She talks about how nice Sweden is. About their remote home in the woods. It is a bit like Limburg where she spent part of her childhood. Had Limburg not been an option? “Hannes and I lived in Finland when we met. I had moved there because Nightwish is a Finnish band. Although I sing in English, I wanted to learn the language and it works best when you immerse yourself in it. Finnish is very difficult, I never learned to speak it well. Of course it doesn't help if you have a Swedish man. Hannes missed Sweden and because I was already used to the peace and space in Finland, we moved there. We now have a very nice house in the countryside. With a dog and cats, and my two horses. When we moved into this house, with a huge plot of land around it, I immediately said I wanted horses. That was my girlhood dream.” You were bullied as a child, you call that a dark period, was being with the horses a way to escape for a while? “Because we moved often, I was always an outsider. I spoke differently than the children in my class, looked different, was tall. That bullying lasted seven years. My parents often went to school, but there they calmly said that there was nothing they could do. I can still get angry about that, because you actually say: 'Bad luck for you, just figure it out'. I withdrew to my own world, to nature, to the horses. So yes, in a way that was a flight.” “So was music, by the way. At one point those were the two things I went for. My career choice test also showed equestrian sport and conservatory. I really wanted to go to the conservatory, until I understood that the vocal training was either very classical or jazz. I had nothing to do with either of them. That is why I went to the Equestrian Center Deurne, a horse training course. That was very hard. I ended up there from high school and had to work hard every day. Some muscles in my body had become so hard that the blood flow in my arms was no longer functioning properly. I had a failure in my hands, so bad that I could hardly drive because I let the reins slip out of my hands all the time. It just wasn't fun anymore. When I heard that there was going to be a rock academy, I immediately registered.” Were your parents surprised that you started doing this? "I don't think so. I was also involved in musicals at school, so it didn't come out of the blue. I think they have kept their heart, because of course it is very insecure. But they have always been behind me. They said: 'You have a talent, you have to do something with it.' My father plays the guitar and sings. He's more in the blues corner. My sister Irene also sang in a metal band for a while and we also performed together. But I'm the only one in our family who made it her job." Were you immediately into metal? “I didn't really like it at all. A friend of mine was listening to it and I thought, what kind of horrible music is that? I was a little late developing my own taste. In the first school band I sang in, we played pop and rock songs. I also really liked grunge, but more to listen to. It wasn't until I moved to Limburg and made friends who listened to different metal bands that I saw the beauty of it. It's not just loud screaming and screeching guitars. The music we make with Nightwish has so many nuances, it's pop, folk, rock, symphonic passages, it's very accessible and melodic. For me, this kind of metal music is the ultimate combination of heavy music, pure feelings and female vocals.” Metal music is a man's world, do you thrive on that? “I don't really know any better. I stepped into this life from school. I actually don't realize that I work almost exclusively with men. It works well for me, I like it too. Men are very direct, there is no hassle. I never think: what is your hidden agenda? I do notice, now that I'm getting older, that I miss female company. Just because women look at things differently and that's sometimes a relief when you're only surrounded by men. That's why it was nice that at the time my female friend went along on tour as a nanny. I had very different conversations with her. She also saw when I was not feeling well and immediately asked how I was doing. Men don't ask that quickly, or don't even notice." By joining 'Best Singers' you hoped that more people would listen to your music. Did that work? "Yes. Our concerts in the Netherlands were immediately sold out. The nice thing is that it went both ways. A lot of people who listen to my music have also embraced Henk Poort. What I'm especially happy about is that I was able to show that metal isn't just satanic music, sung by screaming angry men." Do you also think: finally known in the Netherlands? “Haha. Somehow I like that, stupid huh? It bothered me that we are known all over the world and barely got a foothold in the Netherlands.” Translated from an article in the Dutch magazine 'Flair' from May, 20, 2020 (Zangeres Floor Jansen biecht op aan Flair: ‘Ik vond metal vreselijke muziek’)
Hi Anna, this just popped up on my stream and I just had to say something 😂, yes Epica are EPIC especially with Floor! Great reaction as usual with a nice analysis of their singing, and the band etc. I just wonder if I’m the only one who would love to hear Floor and Simone sing the Flowers duet? I think that it would be amazing! 💖💕💖
Hi Anna. If you want to discover more of Epica, and especially if you want a song where Simone has a lot of room to express herself, I suggest you check out "Chasing the Dragon" from the same concert: ua-cam.com/video/Dx-FsHAQHp8/v-deo.html It starts as a ballad but gets heavier as the song moves on.
As someone who only speaks English that has done subtitle work on UA-cam videos before, I have so much respect for you subtitling these videos in English.
@@annavaskelainen Mina rakastan sinua! :) Can you react to Stratovarius? Its a Finnish band! XD I would recommend their song "4000 rainy nights", or "winter skies" or their latest "unbreakable". No pressure. Another band I would love to see you react to is Symphony X [Russell Allen is the singer, you know him from the bluesy part from the Ayreon song you reacted to recently]. + a language question, if "kka" is a diminutive in Finish, then is "lousikka" a diminutive for a spoon? And does it make sense to say "kiitoskka", such as in a small kiitos? XD
And well I’ve made a good amount of comments, always like Anna’s vids that see. But seriously Floor and Simone. In a vid and Anna Reactiing….what thinking is this. How do we deserve this. All insanely good. Adorable and amazing.
Well done Anna. These 2 lady titans of the European Metal scene are so marvelous together. This was also my introduction to Epica and they immediately joined Nightwish in the top spot. May I suggest that you reach out to their respective agents so you 3 could create something so magical it rivals this? I can dream can't I?
Anna it's ok when you pause the video video and explain who there Singing in deferent styles and . plus it helps you from getting copywriter violations . Love hearing your Amazing sounding accent makes me happy.
I have been watching your videos for like a month now and I absolutely love it. Your reactions are really fun and informative also your personality is just amazing! Hope I can catch live next live premiere. Keep up the great work🥰
And well, along with the epiciness of them together with the band and what not, you’re voice, truly amazing 🥰 do love how much you are into them and the band.
I know it's just the most insignificant detail, but the "fun fact: this is my best "whistle" made my day :) Thanks for the great reaction and analysis!
I really enjoyed your wonderfully informative assessment. Your love of music and unique styles along with your technical experience is refreshing. I am now a fan of you. Kind regards from 🇺🇸
This song is a good way to catch a first glimpse on Epica. To get to them more and with a "typical" song: "Consign to Oblivion" live from the Zenith in Paris
Hallo Anna, Du bist nicht nur eine außerordentliche Kommentatorin, sondern auch sehr sympathisch. Höre Dir sehr gerne zu, weil deine Kommentare so gut sind . Danke
Nice to see you finally got introduced to this great band! This concert was legendary, they went full on with the live choir and orchestra (and Floor) to celebrate their 10 years, in a 3 hours concert. I see everyone already suggesting some goodies to continue, can't wait for that ;)
Loved it Anna. You always do a great job with wonderful commentary. I am not sure if Simone has classical training, but she has worked with Floor. Be well.
Hi Anna, I'm sorry I missed the live version of this analysis. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but, Simon was pregnant during this performance. Not only is this a challenging song but, singing for two also? haha. As always, your take on performances is always spot on. Thank you for taking us along.
And so it is dear Anna! When we get enthralled by something, we start to get into it. I don't know if I'm right, but as a long-time Nightwish fan I think it was this band that drew your attention to symphonic metal. You liked this kind of music, you saw how much it offers. And then the natural and inevitable starts happening - we start finding new things - different, but close and beautiful! I have a feeling that this is what happens to you - almost everybody who likes Nightwish naturally meets Wintersun - you already did - meets Auri - you also did - naturally meets Epica. This song is a good start to getting to know this band, but if you listen to more of them, you are in for a surprise - the vocals of their guitarist Mark Jansen. (The coincidence of names is coincidental - he is not related to Floor). I don't know if his vocal will delight you, but I know one thing for sure - his vocal is very closely related to the lyrics and the roles he plays - it's very important. I'm very curious about your reaction... But - when someone discovers so many new things, and when one thing follows from another - it's impossible not to discover another band. It's Sabaton! They're a metal band - by all means - the fact that their drummer is Floor's husband is one thing, but they're a very interesting, musically great band, and their distinguishing feature for many years has been the subject matter of their songs - it's history! I have never recommended any songs or bands to you that are worth listening to.... So - has hell frozen over? Nightwish fan recommends you to listen to another band? That's right - most NW fans are not focused on one thing - we just love good music.... Christmas is coming, so their new song "Christmas Truce" might be a good start for you! And you're in for a surprise at the end of this song, so listen to the end - wonder - will you recognize that voice? Warm greetings!
Hi! 😊 Good music is good music, I don't like to put myself into certain genre boxes. Sabaton is definitely in my list! What a GREAT band! Good suggestions there. Greetings to you and yours! xx
Epica's guitarist Mark Jansen (no relation to Floor) is a former band mate of Floors when they were in the band After Forever together (Mark for 1996-2002 and Floor from 1997-2009) And Floor and Simone are very good friends. There are quite a few other connections that I don't recall that I've seen other commenters post about in other channel's reactions to this very song!
This is one of my favorite Epica songs. When I first discovered them and bought their albums, this was a standout track to me. It's wonderful to see it perfected in this video. I have to say that I really like your reaction and analysis style. It's easy to tell how you're feeling about a song or vocal passage just by watching your expression, your eyes especially, and you get across what you want to say efficiently even in the subtitles. Thanks for those. You're one of two vocal coach channels where I feel like I learn something every video, and while I'm not a singer, I always enjoy learning. I appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. As far as a recommendation goes, I'm going to recommend a band I sometimes think of as the "Japanese Epica." They're called Unlucky Morpheus and while they're not as symphonic as Epica, they do have strong classical influences. They call themselves "Technical Melodic Speed Metal." The song I'm recommending is called "Unending Sorceress," and it's about the video game Final Fantasy VIII. Here's a link. ua-cam.com/video/PCv3s0T4bx0/v-deo.html
Believe it or not, this song, Sancta Terra, is one of Epicas weaker songs in the eyes of most fans. I really, really hope you will react to more Epica, Simone deserves more recognition as she has fallen a bit in the shade of Floor, and Epica has so much musicality it is mindblowing. I could for instance suggest Kingdom of Heaven part 3 from Omega Alive concert, Unleashed and Chase The Dragon from the Retrospect concert. Best of wishes, hope you stay healthy in these times:)
Hi! I like your NW or Floor reactions! I love Floor and NW! But i also like Epica/Simone very much. I saw her because Covid virtual Omega - Alive show and i loved it! I also see bevore the virtual Nightwish show but Epica topped this 10 times! An absolute masterpiece! If you have time check out from that Omega Alive show the songs "Unchain Utopia", "The Skeleton key" or "Kingdom of Heaven - part 3", i'm sure you like this songs! But the whole show was mindblowing. If you check out 1 song from that show than look the last one i wrote. Maybe in an reaction? Greetings to you from Vienna, and have a nice first Advent sunday!
Aika harva bändi tosiaan pitää tämän tasoista konserttia 10-vuotispäivänsä kunniaksi. Stabat Mater Dolorosa samasta konsertista on myös tarkastamisen arvoinen.
2013 🔥 Nightwish were stunning the crowd at Wakken and Epica were doing this one off 10th anniversary concert. Anything from this “retrospect” concert is astounding so react away 🤗🤯❤️🇬🇧
It’s easy to tell you have an absolute love for music and singing. I know I just stated the obvious but I just wanted you to know it’s easy to tell how much you care about what you’re listening to and how well you explain what’s going on. Have a great day your friend in Oregon
Hi Anna, I'm sure you'll find this song, epic! . Surprisingly, Simone Simon's was already 3 months pregnant when she performed @ this concert. I recommend you check out another song they sing on the same night called "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" ft. both Simone and Floor. Thanks for your analysis, I enjoy your videos so much & never try to miss a reaction from you!
I'll add your vote for this well suggested song! Thank you for your sweet comment, hope to see you around in premiere chats and in the comment section in the future too! Have great weekend. 😊
The choir finish and Dutch windmills in this are outstanding. I wish Disney would grow up and write a princess movie starring these two with their real voices, just set it in 1910 or something. Like when Stravinsky caused riots in Paris with his music lol.
Thanks Anna. Nice reaction and analysis. There is an amazing Finnish band called Poets of the Fall with a fantastic vocalist. Poets of the Fall - Cradled in Love 2013 live in Russia .
Your hunch was right! These two friends have been supporting each other for many years, Simone was a guest for Floors band (can't remember which, sorry).
One can only imagine the amount of money, equipment and rehearsals required to stage an epic concert like this.. Interesting to ponder who first teamed up the classical orchestra with a rock band ..i know the Stones did,Zeppelin and Deep purple did and later ELO...but who was first and what did they perform.🤔?
Exactly Clive! There has been quite a lot of interesting fusions in between classical and pop/rock influences but I'd have to say I do not know who really started it. Music has a tendency to fuse: composers are putting together their own influences while creating new pieces of music. :) After all, we are products of our environments. xx
I found 3 oldest, The Beatles did something too but cnt find any information. The Siegel-Schwall Band performed William Russo’s Three Pieces for Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on July 7 1968. Deep Purple performed Jon Lord’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on September 24 1969. The Nice performed Keith Emerson’s Five Bridges Suite with the Sinfonia of London on October 10 and 17 1969.
@@annavaskelainen Morning Anna we have snow in my part of the Uk ..light by comparison with what hit the NE pushed by 100mph storm Arwen. Im casting my mind back and wondering if Pink floyd did something early on. The wildcard is mike oldfields tubular bells....One man ochestra.😁😎 Ive one music teacher friend who was on back stage terms with Iron Maiden who would flip from them to Vivaldi or Vaughn Williams to Holst to ....Slade. She always said Ludvic Von Beethoven was the first heavy rock musician.😂😁😎. I know Florence of Florence on the machine was a very happy bunny 🐰 the day she got to work with a full pro orchestra in a recording studio. The Greatfull dead, The Hu, Queen, Jethro Tull often have classical musicians at their core....in fact the Dead for decades subsidized child classical music training in poorer parts of the world. Now we have collectives like Playing for change.
The Who had symphony backup on soundtracks I think, and War of the Worlds and Nights in White Satin are both classic rock tracks with orchestra backup.
Thanks Anna, for another lovely reaction! But I have to say that maybe this was more an introduction to beautiful high-and-bright Simone's voice, than proper Epica. The other main band "vocal force" the growling Mark Jansen, which you can hear at the end shouting "Floor Janseeeeen!" (I admit I don't like growling too much so I'm a bit... selective on Epica songs, but Mark's growling has a purpose in the songs, that makes me somewhat to accept it). Clean-high Simone and growling-low Mark often play kind of a 'beauty and beast' contrast in their songs, telling two sides of a story, because another big part of Epica's songs is the depth of their lyrics. And that brings me to the surprising aspect of 'Sancta Terra'. From the musical melodies of this sweet duet did you get what is singing about? Here is how Simone explained the song in an interview: "Sancta Terra is about a suicide commander who believes he will go to heaven after his dead, but he ends up in hell". Did you guess it right? :-P For more Simone, I suggests two Epica ballads: "Rivers" and "Tides of time"
Cool to review finally our Dutch Diamonds. Hopefully you also will review our Dutch rock/metal singer Anneke van Giersbergen (Devin Townsend, The Gathering, Vuur, Aereon). She has inspired both of them. I've met her once personally, such a nice modest person!
I'm not sure about Simone's early training, but she got into a professional band (Epica) pretty young (18?) and whilst she already had a beautiful head studio voice (try 'Cry for the Moon' from 2006), she had to learn to sing well live too and master the transitions to a rockier chest sound. There are some pretty ropey live videos from 2005/6, but obviously she improved dramatically to become absolutely amazing live for the following ~15 years. I don't know if this was just practice of if she got some training. I suspect the latter. I know Amanda Somerville was coaching her in the early days (and also does backup vocals in the cry for the moon video). Which You will appreciate, I'm sure: ua-cam.com/video/Dys1_TuUmI4/v-deo.html
Liked your reaction Anna. Sadly this Sancta Terra song is mainly asked by nightwish fans cause Floor is in it, but in my eyes it does not reflect at all who Epica really is. If you wanna see more of Simone abilities you can see Chasing the dragons or Serenade of self destruction of the same Restropect concert. You can watch any omega alive video (even if i prefer the kingdom of heaven part 3. You can see officials video of consign to oblivion or dancing on a huricane live in zenith (2019). The song that hooked me on epica was the phantom agony (the retrospect live was good to see too if u wanna) But as some buddies there said, Epica is heavier than Nightwish vocaly and in term of music. But they are really master in their style. And the choir is one of the 3 mains singer of Epica, cause u didi not saw all the singers in Epica with this song. Greetings and love from France for you. Enjoy you journey if u go more deeply in Epica but they deserve as much (and in my eyes more) attention than Nightwish (depends on the tastes). And even if maybe Floor is more versatile than Simone i prefer Simone voice cause so cristal clear and i dunno how to say it but she moves me more than floor in her way to sing things. Maybe it is cause of the songs and not abilities between singers, but fuck love Simone voice so much
Great review! If you want to try the heavier side of Epica (with a lot of grunting by the male musicians and Simone like an angelic star soaring above it..) try "Consign to Oblivion" (live in Paris) You'll be amazed...
If you want to explore some more symphonic metal, I highly recommend Fleshgod Apocalypse especially the song Epilogue as it gives their opera singer, Veronica some real stage time. I actually had the opportunity to see Epica and Fleshgod together when they toured the US several years ago. What a show!
I keep returning to your reactions to symphonic metal songs, Anna. Cuz they are so good :) here's a suggestion. Please react to 'Within Temptation', the song is called 'Somewhere' feat. Anneke van Giersbergen. You will love it, I guarantee you. Two lovely female voices, blending perfectly. Beautiful harmonies. hugs from Bosnia and Herzegovina. :)
It's a great song, but I'm always a little disappointed when people's first exposure to Epica is this song. It's not typical of their style, and it often becomes "that song with Floor in it" instead of standing on its own two legs. That said, some might argue this song is a gateway drug to 'proper' Epica, and I hope you'll continue your Epica journey, Possibly with Consign to Oblivion, Essence of Silence or The Skeleton Key? Live if you can find them of course.

Oh, I'm so so happy that you have discovered this wonderful partnership of these 2 great friends. Their voices really do just blend so beautifully!
One of my favorite songs!

Another beautiful reaction and analysis, Anna. Kiitos!
If you want to hear more of Simone and Floor together, I recommend Stabat Mater Dolorosa.
Hello beautiful Anna!Epica is a great band.I love them very much!Thank you, dear, great reaction!🌹💥🤟🇷🇺
Hii Paveel! 😊 I did not know/remember you liked Epica, cool! I'm glad to provide a reaction to a band that you love! xx
Love Epica and this is definitely just the tip of the iceberg for them, 😊 Thanks
great reaction! of course all nightwish fans are going to say you have to see Stabat Mater Dolorosa but hope you don't watch it yet it's beautiful how they sing that song but it's also nice to see who the band epica actually is, and be warned epica is a bit heavier than nightwish and in some songs has the 2 guitarists who do the growling in this song there is a bit of growling from mark jansen the guitarist see if you like it same show retrospect, Epica - Chasing The Dragon LIVE Retrospect
love your reaction as usual, kisses from south of france

For sure! I think you'll especially like the songs of the "2 meter sessies".
and this drummer, insanely good as well♥
Anna great job with your reaction and analysis of Sancta Terra from Epica feat Floor Jansen .Both Singer have Amazing Angelic Voices and pro-form well together .
@@vogel2280 Just found this on Music Hub
Amanda Somerville is a singer-songwriter and operatic vocal coach from United States, who resides in Germany.
She is a member of symphonic metal band Epica, a member of power metal supergroup Avantasia, a member of their duo project Kiske-Somerville with singer Michael Kiske and a member of female band Exit Eden.
She was also the vocal coach of Simone Simons and Floor Jansen.
For all Floor Jansen fans: Singer Floor Jansen confesses to Flair: 'I thought metal was terrible music'
Floor Jansen (39) tours the world as lead singer of the metal band Nightwish and recharges in her house in the woods in Sweden. When she participated last year with 'Beste Zangers', the Netherlands finally got to know her. "Somehow I like that, stupid huh?"
She initially did not know the program with which she broke through in the Netherlands, nor did the other artists who participated.
That was my girlhood dream.”
You were bullied as a child, you call that a dark period, was being with the horses a way to escape for a while?
“Because we moved often, I was always an outsider. I spoke differently than the children in my class, looked different, was tall. That bullying lasted seven years. My parents often went to school, but there they calmly said that there was nothing they could do. I can still get angry about that, because you actually say: 'Bad luck for you, just figure it out'. I withdrew to my own world, to nature, to the horses. So yes, in a way that was a flight.”
“So was music, by the way. When I heard that there was going to be a rock academy, I immediately registered.”
Were your parents surprised that you started doing this?
"I don't think so. I was also involved in musicals at school, so it didn't come out of the blue. I think they have kept their heart, because of course it is very insecure. But they have always been behind me. They said: 'You have a talent, you have to do something with it.' My father plays the guitar and sings. He's more in the blues corner. My sister Irene also sang in a metal band for a while and we also performed together. But I'm the only one in our family who made it her job."
Were you immediately into metal?
“I didn't really like it at all. A friend of mine was listening to it and I thought, what kind of horrible music is that? I was a little late developing my own taste. In the first school band I sang in, we played pop and rock songs. I also really liked grunge, but more to listen to. It wasn't until I moved to Limburg and made friends who listened to different metal bands that I saw the beauty of it. It's not just loud screaming and screeching guitars. The music we make with Nightwish has so many nuances, it's pop, folk, rock, symphonic passages, it's very accessible and melodic. For me, this kind of metal music is the ultimate combination of heavy music, pure feelings and female vocals.”
Metal music is a man's world, do you thrive on that?
“I don't really know any better. I stepped into this life from school. I actually don't realize that I work almost exclusively with men. It works well for me, I like it too. Men are very direct, there is no hassle. I never think: what is your hidden agenda? I do notice, now that I'm getting older, that I miss female company. Just because women look at things differently and that's sometimes a relief when you're only surrounded by men. That's why it was nice that at the time my female friend went along on tour as a nanny. I had very different conversations with her. She also saw when I was not feeling well and immediately asked how I was doing. Men don't ask that quickly, or don't even notice."
By joining 'Best Singers' you hoped that more people would listen to your music. Did that work?
"Yes. Our concerts in the Netherlands were immediately sold out. The nice thing is that it went both ways. A lot of people who listen to my music have also embraced Henk Poort. What I'm especially happy about is that I was able to show that metal isn't just satanic music, sung by screaming angry men."
Do you also think: finally known in the Netherlands?
“Haha. Somehow I like that, stupid huh? It bothered me that we are known all over the world and barely got a foothold in the Netherlands.”
Translated from an article in the Dutch magazine 'Flair' from May, 20, 2020 (Zangeres Floor Jansen biecht op aan Flair: ‘Ik vond metal vreselijke muziek’)

Greetings to you and yours! xx
Epica's guitarist Mark Jansen (no relation to Floor) is a former band mate of Floors when they were in the band After Forever together (Mark for 1996-2002 and Floor from 1997-2009)
And Floor and Simone are very good friends.
There are quite a few other connections that I don't recall that I've seen other commenters post about in other channel's reactions to this very song!
ohhh okay! Interesting connection, I did not know that.
The chemistry in between Simone and Floor truly shows. xx

Good Choice Anna, they both sounds so well together!!!
Your hunch was right!
These two friends have been supporting each other for many years,
Simone was a guest for Floors band (can't remember which, sorry).

The Who had symphony backup on soundtracks I think, and War of the Worlds and Nights in White Satin are both classic rock tracks with orchestra backup.
i love how they sound here,.. but i dont want to be the technician responsible for mixing that stage....
For more Simone, I suggests two Epica ballads: "Rivers" and "Tides of time"
Thank YOU for your message! 🥰
I actually had to go and read the lyrics properly after this reaction but this insight really puts it into a new light!
more Epica plz ....
The song that hooked me on epica was the phantom agony (the retrospect live was good to see too if u wanna)
But as some buddies there said, Epica is heavier than Nightwish vocaly and in term of music.
Maybe it is cause of the songs and not abilities between singers, but fuck love Simone voice so much
Thank you for your message! Simone has quite a different tone compared to Floor's. :)
Great review! If you want to try the heavier side of Epica (with a lot of grunting by the male musicians and Simone like an angelic star soaring above it..) try "Consign to Oblivion" (live in Paris) You'll be amazed...
If you like Floor playing with head/chest/mixed voice (and Marko as the bad guy) “Devil and the deep dark ocean”, Buenos Aires 2018

Epica are the best band in the world and have an even more amazing rabbit hole than Nightwish or Within Temptation

Floor and Simone were flatmates. Floor gave Simone singing lessons.
I think it is a good "gateway drug", like you said yourself. 😊
