I just started New Vegas today, since all the games are on sale I can easily get the others too. Should I stop playing Vegas, do 3 first then Vegas after? I have no idea about what the story is
The actual bombs dropped in 2077. The reason it's retro in it's appearance is that it takes an "alternate history" approach. Also, the transistor wasn't invented in the Fallout universe, hence the big items of tech and old style "modern" items like the Pip-Boy. ✌🏻
In the unlikely outcome that you convert to PC gaming; FO3 and FO New Vegas are separate games, however on PC there is a mod called " A Tale of Two Wastelands" that links the two games as one so you can seamlessly travel between the east coast (FO3) and the west coast (NV). You keep everything in between traveling OR you can simply finish FO3 and then continue to NV in a kind of new-New Game+ kind of way.
I think 4 is a good entry. 3 has the better story of the "modern" Fallouts, in my ever so humble opinion, but the mechanics for 3 and New Vegas have aged a bit. 76 is of course the newest, but as an MMO it's more of a Fallout theme park than a crafted single player adventure. That being said, if you're good with older isometric RPGs, I'd go all the way back to the first two. Fortunately each numbered entry stands on its own so you can jump in anywhere and be fine.

5:39 I'm glad to hear that you're starting with number 1 (Keep an ear out for Richard Dean Anderson). Two is my favorite that I've played but I haven't played them all. Two also has the most "Easter Eggs" I've ever seen in a single player game.
Thank you Clayton for putting this out. Me and my wife just recently started watching Fallout on Prime and I wanted to get into this game series but wasn’t sure if I should start out on 1 or with 4. I’m with you and will start from the beginning.
One additional option to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas on PS4 or 5, is if you have the PS Plus subscription that grants you access to the "classics" catalog. You can stream all sorts of games from the PS1-PS3 libraries, like 3 and New Vegas. Granted, it's similar to having Game Pass, but again, it's another option. Especially for those who maybe only have (or purely prefer to play on) a PlayStation.
Depends on what time investment you want to put into the games as well. Playing all the way up from the first game is potentially a huge amount of hours. Personally I'd just start at Fallout 4 because it's an immense game and I'm a pretty casual gamer. You could always read up on the lore.
Of course it depends on what you like Another thing is that if you are a fan of just such games, then Fallout 1, 2 and (even though this is a separate and simplified game, but still good) Fallout Tactics are the best then comes the console fallout brotherhood of steel It’s a pity that they didn’t tell you that in our time it is advisable to install a mod on fallout in order to significantly improve playability, several childhood diseases of early games have been corrected there (and on Apocalytic Road it is generally advisable to install a pack of mods - 10-15) Fallout 1 and 2 are generally advisable to go through several times in any case as they say - the only bad thing about fallout is that you can only play it once for the first time another thing is that it takes a long time, now people usually don’t spend that much time
Fallout 4 for me has a special place in my heart. The modding is just fantastic in the game. i am hoping the new update doesn't mess up mods too much. Also looking forward to the Fallout London.
When you're playing through number 1, there's a lot of good lore to be had from a super computer in "The Glow" but you'll need some high intelligence stats.
im 21 and in the past ive tried to play fallout 4 and fallout new vegas multiple times and never got super into it but i just recently started fallout 1 and am about halfway through the game and loving it, planning on playing fallout 2 after and go from there
If you want the best Lore-centric experience, start with the original Fallout, and work your way forward. This way, you will understand a lot more of the easter eggs and terminal references as you go, instead of trying to retroactively tie it all together in your head. Also, skipping 1 and 2 misses some of the very best storystelling in the franchise. What they lack in modern graphics, they make up for with rich storytelling, because they *had* to.
Going to have to agree with Johnny, tactics was pretty terrible and BoS was practically a reskinned Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance (also a low point for that series)
All the people that were going to buy bug squash simulator 2 are aware of it and so we can expect that game to fade over the next year anyway. The fallout games have incredible replay value. I'll also go back into FO4 with the update.
After watching the series, I remembered that I had not actually beaten Fallout 4. Many years ago, I had got to a point in multiple quest lines and I couldn't decide which one to commit to. Excited to be starting over again!
They're all good. The nice thing about the Fallout franchise is that even though each game (and the TV series) take place in the same world, each story is independent of the others; you can play any of the games without playing the ones that preceded it.
I'm typically like Clayton, where I have to start a franchise at the beginning. But I started with Fallout3 about 5 years ago, and rolled right into New Vegas afterwards. Taking a little break from the series before I tackle FO4. I don't feel like I'm missing out on too much of the lore, #3 seems like a good starting point.
It is easy not to finish Fallout 4 main quest line. Let says nuking civilians was optional in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Fallout 1 and 2 is for adults that can tell the difference between facts and fiction. Fallout 3 and 4 are teenager friendly. Fallout New Vegas is in between. One more thing. Fallout 4 is a very easy game. Its very hard is as hard as Skyrim´ hard. While Skyrim´s very hard is Oblivion normal if you dont know what you are doing.
I'm looking to start at the first game, but through GOG. Old-school rpgs are where I really got into gaming, but since I played on console I missed out on these.
Ive played all the Fallout games on console and PC, and for fun I just tried Fallout 3 and New Vegas on Luna, amazons streaming version. It was surprisingly really good, and was much like a console experience and used an Xbox controller. Barely any lag and the graphics looked great.
Fallout 4 still feels like the right place to start if you're new but Fallout 3 and New Vegas are special for sure. They can be a bit tough to get into though in today's standards I think.
Started on the Xbox360 with Fallout 3, and played it whole lot back in the day. Have the rest on PC but only dabbled been meaning to revisit the series so may stater with FO3 again. Would also like a try/look at earlier games and the wasteland games. Steam Deck is a good place to play most of this series.
The first 2 games are the hardest in the franchise, if you play the game you will have to swing it old school with a game guide. That is how the game was designed to be played, there is no shame in playing on easy mode those games will whip your ass.
@@clipso9061 Masterpieces shouldn’t be re-written, IMHO. That’s why most reboots fail miserably. There are still people who enjoy games for the gameplay and not graphics.
@@redplague2133 Yeah i understand that, but the game is a brutal point and click that reads like mad max and i have no mouth and must scream mixed together. Its good writing, but getting sexually assaulted and robbed by byron in 2 for having a low intelligence female character is shit that’s entirely untelegraphed. getting locked out of meaningful dialogue for taking int as a dump stat sucks. writing good but it was utterly outclassed by baldurs gate 1 and 2 in terms of smooth game play. the first 2 fallouts amount to the biggest choose your own adventure books ever.
@@clipso9061 Dunno. To me personally, it’s ideal to enjoy with a cup of coffee in one hand and the mouse in the other. That’s why “Mentats” are in the game. But I actually like playing through with different stats to see how it goes. The only actual drawback I see playing long games as an adult - you need to actually remember what you were doing since there’s much less time for gaming and the frequency aint regular either.
OG fallout games were semi "roguelike" and were a blast in their day. When it went open-world, that was the game-changer! Open-world games really feed our senses in very beautiful ways.
Thank you for your videos Clayton. I like your approach on how to deal with video games for a person that can enjoy them now after all things in life have their position. I think I’ll play fallout 1 & 2 also in PC then will get to 3.
F1 and F2 first, then either FNV or F3, then F4. Fallout Tactics was good too, albeit slightly different, and I would definitely throw that in as well. Not playing F1 and F2 is not only missing out on the Fallout lore, but also missing out on one of the best RPGs of all time.
Fallout 1 is the best place to start and then move to Fallout 2. It's a completely mouse driven interface game so it's more accessible to non-gamers and it's about 10-15 hours to complete. Fallout 3, NV and 4 are less non-gamer friendly, since they require you be accustomed to FPS games and the concept of moving in 3D. And if you don't have good reflexes, a 2D turn-based mouse interface game is more your pace. I'm not joking when I'm saying that you can literally play the entire game with one hand just using the menu interface. Using the keyboard for shortcuts to open menus and such definitely helps for a more intuitive experience for quicker access, but not required.
you should add Fall out Tactics to the list, it's like Fallout 1 and 2 but you control a squad through the story. Also it has the voice stylings of R. Lee Ermey (drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket)
1 and 2 are the best in the series . The first have some bad management controls but is great. The second have fixed some issues from the first. The rest are just a lazy rpg with a great foundation. Most people have not played the first 2 and are dismissing them for the old graphic and the turn based combat.
Yeah. 1&2 are the whole different detailed world. Others are completely different games only similar in asset visuals. Shouldn’t even have the same name.
Honestly you can start with any version. They all explain the lore. I would start with 4 since it is the latest and prettiest out of all of them and the new one is about to get an update with new side missions.
I have played all of them. Fo4 is definitely my favorite. I have just shy of 900 hours in and several playthroughs, including a playthrough of Fo4 VR. I'm definitely a fanboy, and I feel like the show did the franchise justice.
Hi Clayton, I'm a huge Fallout guy, so let me give you some advice. Fallout 1, The original, only got one patch after release, so I would recommend downloading a mod called "Fixt", it's a big unofficial patch that fixes many bugs and has quality of life improvements. The gameplay is somewhat outdated, and could be frustrating at times (and for that I actually recommended a character creation guide to give you a head-start and save you some headache later on), other than that the timeless graphics and great story and atmosphere carry the experience. Ok, with all that done, TWO BIG tips, the first is that you're on a time limit, so don't loiter too much before resolving the game's first act, after that, you're free to explore and quest however you like, the second, don't read anything about the story of the game, it's one of the greatest stories in video games, that should be enjoyed organically. BEST OF LUCK ✌😄
1 and 2 are a challenge, both visually and gameplay wise. I've played all of them over the past decades. If you want the whole Lore, start at 1. Otherwise, 3 and onwards.
I jumped back in on FA3 (I am playing on PC) and have played FA1 and 2 in my younger years. Recently, Steam had a code available for F4 and I picked it up. I played FA3 and 4 on Sony consoles, but now I am playing on a PC with a game controller. I love the music and the stories.
@2:27 If you are part of the PC master race, you can start anywhere and save a lot of money doing so, do to regular discounts. 😘🤗 The market for console games coincides with the collectors market and physical copies are scarce, so expect to pay at least 50% to 100% more for it. 🤔 Unless you think of the Steam Deck as console, then you benefit from the discounts, too. 🤷♂ I started with Fallout 4 and in hindsight it is the most accessible for newbs. If you are a hardcore roleplay enthusiast and love the original lore, you probably won't like it because that isn't the focus of the game. @6:10 As a console peasant, you could use a Steam Deck to play it or a half decent laptop with APU would suffice.😘🤔 @10:14 Currently, I am into Fallout 3 GOTYE. As far as I can tell, the role play aspect is stronger.
I would love to see Bethesda handover the rights to Fallout 1 & 2 to NightDive Studios to make a nice modern remaster and port to all platforms. Microsoft also needs to handle this hot property right and have Obsidian Entertainment develop another Fallout title. If they announced that Obsidian was developing a new Fallout game the world would kneel before them in respect.
New video series! Review ALL the games after playing them. When I'm not watching redacted it's reviews of things I love be it tv music or games and I spend hours watching it! Enjoy the series as well!
Would be great if Steam would allow users to download games that start up on current generation machines, without having to download a MOD from a shady site or read Reddit posts on solutions that do not work.
I downloaded a Fallout game in my phone a few years ago but have never played it. I did see a hilarious video of Goat Simulator having a Fallout easter egg in it. I was about to watch the show when your video popped out. Nice.
No need to start at 1, i jumped in at 4 and because I loved it so much I went and played the others but I always return to 4 , it never gets old and it never gets boring , you can spend months or years building or waking around not even following the story , it’s my all time favourite game (fallout4 ).
I'm not a PC gamer either, Clayton. Recently, I downloaded Steam as well and upgraded my GPU and RAM just so I could play with my fiance on split screen(Nucleus program on Steam). The upside is Steam has controller support. It can work with PS controller or XBOX. I like how you're choosing Fallout 1 and 2, good choice. You'll understand the lore, and how certain items work. You're making the right move with the release order. Let me know if you change your mind on 76! My fiance and I would definitely hop online to play with you!
I started with Fallout 3, and then played New Vegas. The latter is the best hands down, story-wise and in atmosphere, DLCs are top notch as well. I tried the first two games but they are quite a challenge for a modern gamer, they don’t hold your hand, let’s put it that way. And of course there’s a bunch of well-made lore videos on YT, if you’re interested.
Get a steam deck, play them all. Steam Deck is awesome....this from a 48 yr old gamer that has gamed on every system since apple 2/vic 20/2600 up to modern consoles and gaming pcs. Steam deck can be played like a console or computer, I love mine and think its the best gaming hardware I have ever owned(I own 2), an amazing gaming pc and emulation beast. Also you are using linux instead of supporting evil corps like microsoft and apple.
I started with New Vegas over 10 years ago and then played Fallout 3. New Vegas is still my favorite of the franchise. I recommend starting there. It's got the best introduction to how the Fallout universe works.
I enjoy playing games on Steam through my PC, despite not being much of a PC person. I prefer gaming on my 65-inch TV. Although I'm not fond of using a mouse and keyboard, the beauty of PC gaming is that you can easily connect any joystick and have it detected by Steam. This allows you to play as if you were on a console, without the need for a keyboard and mouse. As for Fallout, the first-person shooter aspect tends to give me headaches, unless I'm playing on a smaller screen. Considering this, I'm thinking of trying it out on the Steam Deck. While Fallout isn't at the top of my list, I might give it a shot later this year. By the way, great UA-cam channel! Keep up the good work. All the best!
The bombs didnt fall in the 50s. The world of Fallout is basically how people in the 50s imagined the future to be, but the great war actually happened in 2077, and most the games take place hundreds of years after the war.
As a ps4 user, I started with Fallout 4 and went on to Fallout 76. However, after watching this, I think I'm gonna go back to Fallout 1 and go from there for the lore.
Ideally, Fallout 1 & 2 would indeed be the way to go; in fact, there is a nice flow in terms of the development from 1 to 2 (i.e., the 2nd game has the same format as the 1997 original, but it's an overall improvement). In terms of gameplay, New Vegas should be an ideal start for those who don't want to play 1 or 2, but the lore in New Vegas vs the TV show..., there seems to be conflict...(?) BUT! This has been addressed by the creators & now there's a timeline to prove there is no conflict! That aside, the 3rd is the one I started with & it's probably the best, by default, to play for those skipping 1 & 2, yet want exposure to the Fallout lore. As for Fallout 4 & Fallout 76, they are very much the same game imho -- their faults become more & more apparant as you play them, but out of these two, Fallout 76 takes the cake in terms of how bad a game can be made so as to risk destroying an entire ~25yr old franchise. Luckily, Bethesda did avert the collapse of Fallout via Fallout 76 by releasing (thus far) 18 major updates since the game launched & still has another on the way..., but yikes! The game is always online & exists as many different persistent game worlds -- it's been improved, but both Fallout 4 & 76 fall victim to performance issues (Fallout 4 really missed it in terms of graphics, & the game has some serious glitching to it as well) & the always present & pervasive appeal to player microtransactions. This introduces the fun of potentially having to pay real money for something as basic as quick travel...once. & That's just not cool! Plus, Fallout 4 & 76 really marked a turn away from the modding community, which they claimed wasn't what they were doing at all...they just left the option open while releasing their own premium mod content...(?) I don't know. Fallout 4 & 76...in my own opinion...are not too difficult to skip altogether... Otherwise, Clayton -- you need a small form factor PC you can connect to your Home Theater; with Steam's controller support, it gets the PC pretty close to the ease of playing on a console...you'd still need easy access to a mouse & keyboard though.
There's a conflict that barely anyone mentioned. Where is Shady Sands? And from what it looks like in the show there's another question - where was Cathedral and how did Master miss four vaults right next to it?
I've never played the Fallout series. Now that its got my curiosity, I am going to try it. Many have said to start the series with a later game but with me I like to start at the very beginning so I am going to start with the very first one. I like seeing how a franchise get its start and this is the best way how. I've also played PC games way back when I had an IBM 286 PC and the way consoles are going nowadays I may return to PC gaming since I have many more options compared to consoles. Great video discussion.
Good call starting with 1 . I started with 2 when it came out way back when , and that was one of my favourite games , and kinda still is really , although the last time I played either 1 or 2 was probably about 10 years ago or so on my second playthrough of both. Fallout 3 , NV and 4 are good games in their own right (haven't played 76) , but 1 and 2 are different than the rest. I liked the stories , the atmosphere and the overall feel / vibe of 1 and 2 a bit more than the later games. Oh and btw there is also Fallout Tactics. I had played that one a bit , but never really got through it. I think that one was focused more on the Brotherhood of Steel side of things. Now I'm feeling like I'm gonna have to go play some fallout again 😁
The show is actually good and I was raised on Fallout 1 and 2 as a kid (now 37). Found the gender pronoun nod in episode 1 heavy handed though, and it pulled me out of the episode. As if transgenders would even be a thing in a post apocalyptic future, or the notion that the Brotherhood of Steel would give a single flying eff about gender affirming language.
Been playing since I was a kid in 1997, the first 2 games have the best story and the darkest tone also the best soundtrack in my opinion but, if you just watched the show I would probably recommend you play fallout New Vegas as it takes place close to where the show took place and and will help build or fill in unanswered questions from the show for people who aren't familiar. Fallout 4 has the best gameplay and scrap/upgrading and crafting system. It also has a mode called survival mode which I would highly recommend (fallout new Vegas has one also) as it makes surviving in the wasteland a very tense and punishing experience. If you do go down the road of playing fallout 4 first just understand that the story is not that good so make sure you wander the wasteland in search of side quests and random events to avoid the boring story.
I was gonna play all of them but, ultimately, there are too many good games in my backlog and too little time. I played 1 so I could at least understand the inception of the series and it honestly was a transformative experience. That game was fundamental for the trajectory of future cRPGs. I tried a bit of Fallout 2 but the “chosen one” angle was way too overdone from the beginning and so I stopped playing it. Many months later, I will soon start my fallout experience again with New Vegas and then wait for Fallout London.
Any chance you’re setting up a Discord? Somehow I feel there would be a cool community seeing how intelligent content (usually…) attracts interesting and relatively speaking intelligent people :)
Listening to this while buying gamepass to jump into a fresh hardcore playthrough of new vegas. If its too rough for me, i'll try 76. Fallout 4 is def the best bet, but it's also the one i've already played the most. I tried 3 and new vegas. Little more new vegas than 3. I wished i coulda finished NV. Now i'm finally gonna.
I tried to play fallout couple years ago but I couldn't get into but I might try it again since they got the free upgrade for PS5 who knows I might fall in love with it. like I did with the witches 3 cuz I played it a little bit on the PS4 but couldn't really get into it but they had free upgrade for The Witcher 3 2 years ago so I decided to try the game again this time I completely fell in love with it. now it's become my favorite I most have over 1000 hours on that game
Thanks for the video! This is exactly what I needed. Changed from consoles to PC about 3 yrs ago and always heard about Fallout but never played. The TV show has peaked my interest as it has others just by seeing sales skyrocket. Wasn’t sure if I wanted to start all the way back at the beginning with the rudimentary graphics but good point about getting the lore!
It's definitely best to start out playing with a buddy, so FO76 was my go-to. My daughter and I have been playing for just over a year now, and loving it! I just began FO4 to play on my own. I do agree with your buddies' idea of starting with 3 for the lore..but you can also take time exploring and reading everything along the way to piece things together like I do in 4 and 76.(requires patience though) Great games..good show!

(and on Apocalytic Road it is generally advisable to install a pack of mods - 10-15)
Fallout 1 and 2 are generally advisable to go through several times in any case
as they say - the only bad thing about fallout is that you can only play it once for the first time
another thing is that it takes a long time, now people usually don’t spend that much time
Mannnnn, seeing Clayton play this makes me happy.
Dont forget fallout tactics and fallout brotherhood of steel
The multiplayer games of fallout tactics BoS were tons of fun 😄
Just forget those two, they don't exist.
Going to have to agree with Johnny, tactics was pretty terrible and BoS was practically a reskinned Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance (also a low point for that series)
That is a beautiful metroid hoodie, official Nintendo store i think.
Thank you! You're correct.
That wrong bombs dropped in 2077
Ive played all the Fallout games on console and PC, and for fun I just tried Fallout 3 and New Vegas on Luna, amazons streaming version. It was surprisingly really good, and was much like a console experience and used an Xbox controller. Barely any lag and the graphics looked great.
Oxhorn has an entire channel devoted to Fallout lore. Consider watching his lore videos from Fallout and Fallout 2.
They’re also much more replayable considering the variety of ways to solve the issues. A second go with “restoration project” would be my choice.
@@redplague2133 this is also why they will never be remastered in a meaningful way.
Can't wait for the next gen upgrade for Fallout 4! This game has a special place in my heart.
I love Fallout 76! Over 1000 hours so far. Fallout 3 and 4 are awesome as well. The others...
Same but 3100 hours. Hooked and having a blast!
Yeah, I am over 2000 hours and still playing it. It's the best game world in all of gaming IMO.
Just play them in order.
Going back again to fallout 4 but now will play the game only doing good and nothing evil. Looking forward to the ps5 update on April 25th
Awesome. Thanks for that tip. I'll definitely do that.
The music is so 50s it’s awesome fallout is amazing hands down a big one to play and it’s good practice for the direction the world going lol
@6:10 As a console peasant, you could use a Steam Deck to play it or a half decent laptop with APU would suffice.😘🤔
@10:14 Currently, I am into Fallout 3 GOTYE.
You should play 1, then 2, then 3, then New Vegas. And then you should stop. (Or play New Vegas mods until the end of time)
Im excited to play fallout 1 and 2 on my retro handheld using port master. We are so spoiled. 😊
Fallout is one of the most unique settings and worlds in gaming and I’m so glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves
Love the hoodie Mr. Morris
Of the newer (3D) Fallout games, 3 has the best story but 4 is probably the best experience, especially with Americana.
I think it's great you are starting with Fallout 1. It's fantastic.
I started with New Vegas over 10 years ago and then played Fallout 3. New Vegas is still my favorite of the franchise. I recommend starting there. It's got the best introduction to how the Fallout universe works.
Fallout 76, is good to run around with some friends.
I thouroughly recommend starting with New Vegas Clayton. I have a feeling you’ll like it.
start with 1; the vibe is unmatched;
I started with FO3. I will say this, its worth it, but needs to be heavily modded (PC) to run well
Dang Clayton never took you for a gamer. Been playing since 3. Have some 76 content on my channel, mostly fallout 76 pvp
Can't wait to dive into that lore.
Started this week with Fallout 4 🎉
easy. Fallout 3 with the Xbox update enhancements. A tragedy not to.
A remaster for the original games would be sweet.
Microsoft own ineXile now so I think using an updated Wasteland 2 engine would be perfect to remake the originals keeping that classic isometric view.
Exactly! They are so politically incorrect that might be what block them. 🙃
Fallout 3 was amazing. Loved the karma system. You could be good or evil based on your choices.
New Vegas is top notch Clayton I’d start there. By the way, are you still doing a bit of hell diving?
I tried to play fallout couple years ago but I couldn't get into but I might try it again since they got the free upgrade for PS5 who knows I might fall in love with it. like I did with the witches 3 cuz I played it a little bit on the PS4 but couldn't really get into it but they had free upgrade for The Witcher 3
2 years ago so I decided to try the game again this time I completely fell in love with it. now it's become my favorite I most have over 1000 hours on that game
You can also stream 3 and New Vegas on PS4 or PS5 with PS Plus Premium (the PS3 versions)
It's definitely best to start out playing with a buddy, so FO76 was my go-to. My daughter and I have been playing for just over a year now, and loving it! I just began FO4 to play on my own. I do agree with your buddies' idea of starting with 3 for the lore..but you can also take time exploring and reading everything along the way to piece things together like I do in 4 and 76.(requires patience though)
Great games..good show!
You can jump in any game as each is separate with their own stories. 3 and 4 were good. 76 is good now.
76 i played back in the day. There were no human characters and now it's full of them i think.
@@Obenfiquista81 yes it is full of real people playing and the amazing thing is the majority of players actually help out and not act like pricks. Lol. Sorry for the dirty word. Lol.
