I was given 4 wasabi "Mazuma" the other day, and came here to see how to grow them- was so pleasantly surprised to see this was a Garden Time episode with William! He was my boss & a mentor years ago & I always think fondly of him. Thanks again, William, for teaching me even more about plants. 💖💖💖 to you.
Just picked up three rhizomes from Frog Eyes today in Camas WA and came here to learn more about growing them- I couldn’t be happier knowing I got them from this woman! So knowledgeable!
Please share secret how to make rock bed for this wonderfull plant I live in Australia and I love wasabi but I grow them in pots and this year was the first year I harvested my mazuma variety ( purple color) and to my great surprise and enjoyment it was very successfull!!! Thanks in advance Alexabder Sydney Australia
I remember the surprise of learning than most 'wasabi' consumed in sushi shops is actually not really wasabi at all but instead radish, which to me was cheating. Now I'm hearing it's a mix of radish, mustard and dye? So all these years later we're going to try and grow our own wasabi. Here's hoping it works in this hot and dry climate of ours.
+Erik Landvall There are two kinds of wasabi: japonica 'Daruma' = also called 'misho', watery and mild smell, better look stem. W. japonica 'Mazuma' = sticky , greener, sweeter and stronger spice due to twice of time to grow. __ The best part is the rhizome of wasabi.
Erik, Mazuma wasabi and Daruma wasabi are to different cultivars (cultivated varieties) of wasabi that are available in the United States. In Japan there are at least 18 main cultivars of Wasabi that are grown, each in a different region of Japan. Just like there are multiple cultivars of just about anything you can think to grow: "Thai Basil" "Genovese Basil" "Holy Basil" "Lemon Basil" or "Butterhead lettuce", "Deer Tongue Lettuce", "Romaine Lettuce", or "Scarlet Runner Beans", "Blue Lake Beans", "Desperado Beans". There are over 200 cultivars of basil alone!
Its pretty easy to grow in a hydroponics system, You could easily have a good sized rhizome within a year. Despite the claims wasabi has no issues with light, only just FIR and UV (ie heat exposure). So you can accelerate the growth rates using artificial lighting.
Hi nikushim666. does it work for you to grow them in a hydroponic system? I am trying but i still do not get a rhizome, can you give me some advice? ;)
@@violetviolet888 Yes, i have a few in one of my grow tents that i collect offshoots from year to year. I'm not commercially growing them though. They are under generic LED lighting panels (Marshydro i think) grow method is top drip DWC buckets with hydroton substrate (eight inch net lid). Nutrient is General hydro 3 part flora mix at a 1/1/1 ratio, TDS PPM is around 800, PH around 6.5. Netcup size is 10 inch.

If you get a lot of rainfall, you'll want to try to channel it to the plant. It should grow in soil, though
“This is perfect Wasabi weather”
Can you grow them in a hydroponic?
How can I overwinter them? I am in Zone 3 here in Alberta.
please another video on plantlets and seeds, thanks
Nice video! Can a wasabi plant be grown from just the rhizome part?
i think?
i want to buy wasabi seeds.
I don't understand the Mazuma vs Daruma thing. Is it different parts of the plant or is it different type of plants?
Different varieties of plants, both are Wasabi.

Where to buy seeds
I'd buy some
More than antibac. It's an old TCM cure for fish poisoning.
There is a slug on a leaf she was holding, you also can see holes in the leaves, 4:28 you can see the bug
Yup. They are slug magnets.
So? Lol
In this area, slugs are just a part of life. Make it worse, these things love the same type of environment that slugs love.

Have you grown wasabi yourself? Are you saying this from personal life experience?

@@nataliamoreno4233 What system are you using and what nutrient balance? Sorry just now seeing the question two years after the fact. :(
Will it grow in Aquaponics?
The water temp is around 15~17 degree C. Most fishes will not be able to live in that cool water.
Where may buy the root? Thank you.
Contact information is always in the last 20 seconds of our stories.
Where can we purchase them??
