Where does real wasabi come from? John travels to the Japanese Alps to a valley in Nagano where the largest farm is located. Let's try some wasabi beer, wasabi ice cream, wasabi burger, wasabi juice ... it's all here! What makes wasabi so spicy? Are there any health benefits? We'll find out! 日本語字幕も付きました! #wasabi #onlyinjapan #nagano #cooljapan #100tokyo #isjapancool #superfood #sushi #kitkat
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN Tried Wasabi Kitkats there wasn't much kick to it. But I will definitely have to try the Wasabi Ice cream! Thank you so much again for this video, I have watched it ten times so far and find it more interesting every time I watch it
Haha I know how you feel. I ordered grilled shrimp in a restaurant and my dad told me to add just a little bit of wasabi on it but I put like half of a spoon and I choked. Thought I had died already lol
Milind h s it's blasts a hint of spiciness through your nose, ears, throat, eyes, I cried after eating like a whole tablespoon of it thinking it was ice cream.
prittae Thank you! I'm really glad you enjoyed it -- I enjoyed making it :P I was laughing the whole time I made "Kagita-san's Wonderful Wasabi Corner" graphics. I'll be back with another episode soon. -John
I love fresh wasabi, I remember the first time I had it and was surprised to find that it's really not spicy at all like the processed kind. Shizuoka also makes great wasabi and I am thinking of doing a video on that region. Thanks so much for this video as I had no idea that Nagano makes wasabi.
Japan, my dream country. I've been binge watching your videos. Awesome job John! I started watching Simon and Martina, and now you're one of my favorites.
You don't know how excited I am that you uploaded another video without having to wait long! Your videos are major reason I want to visit Japan and someday live there. Thanks John! Keep the wonderful videos coming.
nassirk I'm really very very happy to hear that! I'm going to try to make 2 a month now so hopefully the wait isn't as bad as before. Really appreciate hearing from you and thanks for watching! -John
LOL I lost a bet because of this video. I said you don’t know how much wasabi you get until after you pull the plant. Turns out, you can feel for the stem to see how big it is. 😮 love these videos thank you and keep em coming. 🥰
Hi There from the Netherlands! I'm prescribed to your channel for a couple of years now. But these older vids i must have missed! They are Great though!! Thanks!
I must say, the precision and effort in your videos are top notch. It's informational, the voice is great, and it's straight to the point. You're keeping them professional, which, I would assume is tough to do based on the recent trend in youtube videos. Normally consisting of: 1. Talking loud 2. Cringy Moments 3. Forced Laughter 4. Unknowingly degrading their own dignity. Anyways, regardless of that list up there, thank you for keeping it up.
I never knew where wasabi originated from.I once had very weird tasting nuts in India(where wasabi isn't popular) and was wondering what the intrinsic taste was. Thanks a lot for giving such a good show. The way Japanese grow Wasabi in pure river bed water is simply so satisfying to watch.I am sure there can never be such pure water in agriculture in India.
Just started watching your videos today and am now more than motivated to study even harder to get into a Japanese University! Hope to be able to see everything there is in Japan and try out all the foods :D. Keep up the good work!
As someone who hopes to someday visit Japan, I'm glad I found this channel. I have taken the time to watch all of your videos and I am very grateful to have such a wealth of information about the culture just by watching your videos! :) Thank you John!
Casey Coauette I am so happy to hear you watched the whole series. I also learned a lot while making them, too! ... and there is so much more to cover!! Really appreciate you writing. Keep in touch! -John
I tried the wasabi kit kats, they’re so small compared to normal kit kats, so that’s why he ate it that way. (Btw wasabi kit kats are disgusting, I only ate 1 and still got the entire box lmfao)
At first my mom was not really like wasabi, she thought it's spicy and shocking when eating. But now she gets used to it and totally loves it. We always have some little packs of wasabi paste in the fridge. And my mom always eats seafood with it as a dipping sauce. I can eat wasabi but not really into them. I think it's a spice that you hate at first and hesitate to try but when you get used to, you'll totally love it
I just subscribed to your channel and i must say these videos are really good. I'm Japanese and learning a lot about my country from your videos. thank you fro your effort.

I bought a little wasabi plant in a pot from Borough market a number of years ago. Over the years I have repotted it and now it's a big strong winter plant. Every summer it fades and gets eaten by caterpillars or, most probably, slugs but as the temperature drops towards winter it grows back better than ever. I've not eaten from it yet, or tried to propagate it.....but I will 😊
Very very happy to see some more videos from you! You do well in presenting what the video is about and you do your best in pronouncing the words right, which is a huge boost in view-ability imo! I hate wasabi, but I love spicy foods, it's the taste that gets me. Do we have real wasabi in the US? I know I can buy it in a jar or a sauce container, but not fresh. I'm wondering if it's real or of they just mix horseradish and other ingredients to make it resemble wasabi. I wonder if Japanese restaurants in the states use the fake wasabi?
Noslack412 I recently looked it up too, and apparently it is indeed horseradish mixed with mustard. I wonder if real wasabi is even spicier. I'm not a big fan of its taste (fake one anyway), but it's very interesting to see the effort that goes into it. They probably use the fake one too, the price would have to go up quite a bit if they had to import real wasabi. I'm guessing most people don't even know the truth about it.

I think the wasabi can bring out the flavor it certain foods and some cheeses is a good example of that. Thank you! I'm going to try it as soon as I can find Emmentaler cheese in Japan. -John
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN What? Emmentaler is called Swiss Cheese in the US? There are so many different cheeses here in Switzerland like the Appenzeller cheese, the Gruyere Cheese, the Tilsiter cheese, eg. If you like cheese and if you would be here I do recommend to you to try all different kind of Swiss cheeses. They are so おいしい!It is like all Japanese eat only sushi... I am so surprised!

It really saddens me that I don't like the flavor of wasabi😔 Maybe it's because I've only had American wasabi, but the flavor is too weird for me to handle
Jupp, even in Japan most of the wasabi is fake, only the high end places has the real stuff because it is so expensive with the growing conditions needed and slow growth.
I loved your " CARAY " you was honest and not pretentious as many people do while talking about Japanese food. ...Wasabi BEAR ... that makes Yuzuru Hanyu a malinchista. .. he used winie poh instead.
That's horseradish with food coloring. Have it in Europe as well. There is only one restaurant in the Netherlands with real Wasabi, but having a meal there is about $350.00
In Lebanon you can choose what kind of wasabi you want. If you want the fake wasabi, it’s free. But if you want real wasabi, it’s 25$ and you need to eat it quickly because it looses its flavor in 20min.

ROFL. Sorry for laughing at your pain.

Wasabi lives such a luxurious life. Pities on all of us
I bought a little wasabi plant in a pot from Borough market a number of years ago. Over the years I have repotted it and now it's a big strong winter plant. Every summer it fades and gets eaten by caterpillars or, most probably, slugs but as the temperature drops towards winter it grows back better than ever. I've not eaten from it yet, or tried to propagate it.....but I will 😊
I wish I could go to Japan... Great video though!
Very very happy to see some more videos from you! You do well in presenting what the video is about and you do your best in pronouncing the words right, which is a huge boost in view-ability imo!
