The Development History of Team Fortress 2 - from the Mod to TF2

- Today we are going to have a closer look at the Development History of Team Fortress 2. We'll start with the mod and go on with the cancelled TF games: Valve's Team Fortress, TF2: Brotherhood of Arms and TF2: Invasion and end with the release version of Team Fortress 2 and two mods trying to recreate the TF: Classic feeling and recreate other classic content.
UPDATE: The weapon models used in TF2: Invasion come from the MOD Eternal Silence.
Here you can find an old preview of Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms (1999): • GameStar Preview - TF2...

Invisible sniper sounds like my worst nightmare
The Spyper
AJT Junk irk
Actually they only went invisible until the head.
Essentially a decent Spy with Ambassador then?
If the sniper has a cloak and dagger
I'm glad we got the TF2 we got. The older versions looked more like generic shooters. TF2 has a unique art-style and feel.
12:58 the medic's design was so good they kept it for the final version of TF2. Amazing.
6 Game. 2 Games Devoplet By valve And released in 1 April 1999 and 10 Octorber 2007 The Orange Box Pack. 2 Games Deveoplement by Valve and shortly Cancelled Project in 1999 and 2005. 2 Games By Community Made it : Classic 2 And Pre-Release 2006 Version. ! +1
It feel uncanny
@@hadrionics2755 I think it might have originally been an old design for the commando (Invasions counterpart to the soldier) in the art you can see that he's holding the same machine gun seen in the other concept art pieces of the commando, rather than a flamethrower.
I want to play the TF brotherhood of arms version. Not over tf2 but I still want to play it.
Think_Fast wish we could but it was cancelled
I'm thinking if you wanna play like that, why not tries some Tom Clancy's game.
@Kakyoin Noriaki lmao what
It would probably just be quake team Fortress but in source
Me too i like army
This is the most in-depth tf2 history video on youtube, great job!
Thank you man!
6:48 Ah yes, the famous rectal physics :D

> Class names being modified to be more realistic to fit the setting
> Sniper gains the ability to be invisible
Valve logic at its finest.
i feel like im sitting here alone wanting to try Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms i believe the game would be awesome
TheIsanityDiver you are not alone
@@metalplant8452 so true
@David Well a modding team is rebuilding it from the file that leaked
@David They had a playable version and i know some people have it on their hard drive or something
Now it's not finished made but it's still something
Don't ask me where to get it tho... Probably not even possible if you don't know where to look

*MEEEEEEDIIIIIIIIIC!!!*
thank God tf2 didn't become just another generic war shooter
*Cough* cod *cough*
TF2 already and obiously has buildings, but if you want to ride vehicles, you might wass hop to Battlefield 1, it purposefully creates unfair and feared one-man war machines.
Yup
you kidding? I was a huge team fortres fan and TF2 was just disgusting cartoon like shooter.
It dosent sound generic
You know, I bet when you released this video people said "Yeah! I'd love to see someone or a team manage to bring us a complete version of TF2 Brotherhood and Invasion!"... But then again, we already have them. Think about it.
We have the Enemy Territory series of games by Splash Damage. We have Battlefield 2, we have Novalogic's Joint Operations, we have Söldner.
I'd like to see a completion not of the games but of the concept art, ideas and models so that people could use them for new content.
It's not the same thing... BoA seems especially dope for its time. Invasion has been leaked and there are modders patchworking it to make a playable version
8:57 “flame thrower guy”

I'm really interested into the Invasion concept.
Shooting Rockets from the under-barrel of a pulse rifle...
So that's where the idea of Soldier:76 came from...
Flying Scott so trueeee or maybe cod I think
That's supposed to be a grenade.
8:31 those two screenshots are actually in the Early Stage Borealis maps.
Honestly still amazes me that Valve employees can drop that they have been working on for years even if they had worked hard on it (especially those concept art works man). Always have to respect the way they did to make a great game even if they had to sacrifice a lot of things they worked on.
Plus I have to give it to the art style of TF2 for giving me inspiration to work as a VG artist. It's just so PERFECT
They dont have bosses, they can do any wild things, and even create another game

I remember an old indie multiplayer game made in the half life engine called "empires" that have some of these features.
"Hi it's Tyler from Valve News Network and I'll be talking about [insert Valve related topic here], here we go!"

great work dude, it was intresting to watch your video
This is half life 3. It's been almost been 200,000 years but I hope it's worth the wait
As a Quake 2 player in 1998, Brotherhood of Arms never coming out is one of the biggest disappointments of my gaming life.
12:40 that maps like 2fort
2fort is one of the first maps for tf2 and existed since the original mod itself
@@bunkerdown8494 2fort is older than Team Fortress itself
@@meatycitadel Yes that why I said it existed since the original mod
@@bunkerdown8494 No, it existed even before that. The layout of 2fort comes from a map called "Fortress" made for Doom in 1993.
@@davymachinegun5130 No it doesn't, the layout of fortress ain't like 2fort, it's just based upon it. 2fort as a map I'm taking about not the idea
15 years of this, i cannot believe its come this far. I am so happy with what the game is today! Happy Birthday TF2!
I remember growing up playing TFC but when TF2 Came out I had to get tf2 on Xbox cause for years every pc I downloaded TF2 too if ran like shit so I stuck to Orange Box on Xbox then in the last few years I got a pc that can run the game and well here I am
Nice video. Kind of sad it ended with the release of TF2. I'd love to see a video like this that described the long and storied history of the game after it was released. I think that's just as interesting as the games development if not more so.
Too bad that group making the invasion fan game stopped. That version sounds interesting. But if anyone wants a similar experience Natural Selection 2 is a good substitute.
That's true, I'd be psyched to know how the game and it's Community envolved over the past decade
The MAP he was playing all the time in the video is 2-FORT! right from the alien days!!
1 like and i'll force gaben to do half life 3
Dante TF3
8 half life 3's?
i want to be one of the people who gets one of those 8 copies!
i have good news
Wow, did Dante do it? Half life 3 was actually confirmed somewhat.
You son of a bitch, you did it. HL: Alyx is here.
wie heißt du den auf Steam?
I'm into anything sci fi so I'd have been all for a half-lifey aliens v humans TF. But they probably made the right decision scrapping it
I'm 100% certain a game concept like "Team Fortress: Brotherhood of Arms" with its Commander class would be unplayable as a casual mass-market team shooter. It might have worked as an e-sport tournament game, but then you would have faced the problem of how to attract enough players. The reasons are simple: 1) The commander class is vital to gameplay, but what do you do if no player wants to fill that (potentially boring) role? What if the player who chose to be Commander sucks? Or if he is a 12-year old annoying squeaker? Or if his team doesn't follow orders?
2) The need for communication. A proper mic (and the ability to speak English on global servers) would be obligatory, and the game engine would need to be able to support good in-game voicechat sound quality with no lagging or acho. But many players hate being forced to talk to random strangers, or they don't even own a headset. Worse, if you were an online "girl gamers" playing team shooters during that 1990s/early 2000s era, you were basically guaranteed to get harassed.
Asymmetrical gameplay has proven to be a bad choice for multiplayer games. Just look at the various 1-vs-4 games, like Evolve, that failed due to its inherent gameplay flaw: it sound cool on paper, until you have to play it with other random idiots on the internet.
Brotherhood of Arms had a different, but equally problematic asymmetry, in this case giving one player the task of coordinating an entire team.
As for "Team Fortress 2: Invasion", it could have worked. But that wasn't a team shooter, it was a Tower Defense mode with buildable defenses. The current TF2 mode Mann vs Machine that pits 6 players vs incoming armies of robots and allows players to buy upgrades to weapons and charactes between waves is similar, although MvM is more of a Horde mode.
The Invasion mode probably died to the technical limitations of the time.
@@TF2CrunchyFrog It worked fine. They cancelled it because they feared the lack of simplicity would lead to it not getting enough players. It wasn't a tower defense btw, it was a first person RTS.
A new Predator game just released, which pits a team up against a single Predator, and it sucks so bad most people don't even know it exists
The fact this got so many like makes me cringe... Take no offense but your comment is kinda dumb. It's not like that version of tf2 was made to be casual or even worst be played by e-sport, like, what ? Do you see e-sport players playing squad or arma 3 ?
While yes there would be problems like what you pointed out, those are just problems you can easily overcome or can easily ignore. It would 100% work, case closed. Don't trust me ? Natural selection 2, Rising storm 2, even Arma 3 zeus... It works. You might be correct about microphones but, the tf2 that we got (and in fact almost every multiplayer game on the source engine) overcame that by using voice commands Sure it's not as smooth or as efficient, but it works. TF2:BoA just gave you the opportunity to play better and maybe with time more and more players would use the microphone. If it was really that bad, this idea would have been scraped.
Evolve failed because it's trash. Once again, Natural selection 2. It works.
1:56 oh yeah,big brain time
Tf2 best game ever -guy who played since 2010 but lost its account and got a new one in 2012

That isn't an update. That's an announcement that people are trying to make a community update in the WORKS. And it's calling out for others to join.
I miss TF/MegaTF/CustomTF… it was never the same after they moved to the GoldSrc/Source engine :(
Found your channel last night... My new favorite one.. Nothing better than gold src stuff
Team Fortress 2 since 2007 is so fantastic that it feels more like it’s own game than a sequel to the original Team Fortress.
Thank god for TF2 we have today.
Can someone make a Brotherhood of Arms game independently ?
Great vid!
And I thought pharahs jetpack was original...
Dzemorek at least some of her other abilities are original
Dzemorek "invisible man with uzi"
This video is the most in depth I've seen on this topic.
No.
Great Dog triggered much?
Where have you seen a better video on this Great Dog?
Thank you for this informative video, even though you didn't speak a lot about Fortress Forever and TF2 Classic.
The release version clearly seems better to my eyes. Valve chose to stay close to the original concept gameplay-wise instead of stripping most of TF's DNA, and I don't regret it at all. However, I would still gladly try a remade version of Invasion, as I'm relatively interested by its art style and its gameplay ideas (I read the classes would have bought abilities, like eating corpses or upgraded turrets).
Thx! I wanted to focus on the official stuff made by Valve.
i say tf2 invason should be ether stand alone dlc or a tf2 spin off

It's sad that TF2: Brotherhood of arms was never leaked, it seemed like such a cool concept. (Also, if any GoldSrc modders are reading this, it would be a cool idea to take all the known info about BOA, and possibly make a mod for TFC that turns it into that? Just an idea!)
Maybe valve could provide assets..? No i'm dreaming...
@@me67galaxylife I mean maybe but probably not
@@Turbs94945 Yeah... But who knows, maybe it'll leak, that's more likely, though still not likely... A man can dream i guess
@@me67galaxylife A 20-year-old unreleased game I doubt will be leaked. I did hear some rumors that some of the technologies and assets for BOA were put in CS 1.6?
@@Turbs94945 Yes but you never know, we had leaks from tf2 in 2006 last year so who knows, all it takes is them having send the files to a person or a company and them making a clumsy move
I would love to play TF BoA and Invasion. They look really good and fun to play.
Also, it's just me or Brotherhood of Arms looks more detailed that CS 1.6 in general (weapons worldmodels, playermodels and animations)?
The old aliens have been reintroduced into the TF2 some time ago, well you can‘t find, see or play as them but there are a bunch of maps with ufos that capture you and shit, they added also allot of new weapons with that, pretty awesome and you can find pictures from the old pictures
you never cease to amaze me, TF Invasion!? I have never heard of him! but I'm vague about all the elements that have been recycled in games like Nuclear Down and Empires to this day, do you know what other game you could play? natural selection
funny, i been playing Natural selection the past few weeks
Level-of-detail models with lower polycounts didn't become obsolete, they are still a standard practice in games, and were included in HL2 on some models... but despite some minor factual inaccuracies, this is a great video!
The differing quality of models from certain distances is something Source is also capable lod wise.

the "big update" for TFC also added the teleporter (kinda, since it was kind of hidden between the commands)
Whoa, hold on! Changing model detail based on camera distance is a very common trick in game development. Far from being "obsolete tech", it has been becoming more and more common over the years as games grew more complex. Today, pretty much every single AAA title utilize this technology. Open world games especially rely heavily on it (for the obvious reason) and they go really extreme with it. NPCs in Cyberpunk 2077 for example, literally become PS1 characters when they're at the furthest distance from the camera.
Valve devs were super ahead of their time for implementing this back in 1998, yet you talked about it as some weird thing from the past. I found that unfair.
I don't know that much about tech, however i heard most devs avioid it because it's heavy on the CPU
The crawler thing from tf2’s invasion update has an eye that kind of resembles the alien helmet in team fortress: invasion.
The 3 strange weapons you spoke of are actually placeholder models from eternal silence, everything is a placeholder except for the alien and human models
The screenshots of the Middle Eastern map of the Brotherhood of Arms era of TF2, eventually spawned the Counter-Strike DE_DUST & DE_DUST2. (10:24)
i find funny how Team Fortress Classic was supposed to be a more realistic version of Team Fortress, and ended up being basically the same, and then TF2 was supposed to be the most realistic of them all and ended up being the cartooniest
I love how at first the sniper was supposed to be invisible like a spy, but then he's the one getting backstabbed in the final product
Rocket jump waltz at the end hit differantly now
Another bit of information, BoA wasn't in Goldsrc, but in the Source engine, it was essentialy a demonstration of the engine, alongside hl2
I thought of natural selection when you described tf2's invasion phase
Correction: TFF was created in 2006, when people thought TF2 was canceled. It was supposed to be a fanmade TF2
I so want to play a fully furnished game of invasion
OmG this video is so interesring! ^-^ thanks!
Thanks man!
Did you know that Barking Dog Studios was planning to develop at least four maps for Team Fortress Classic like what they did with Counter-Strike during Beta 5.0? yet, out of the four maps, only three would be completed. They were playtested by both Barking Dog & Valve employees alike & were planned to be included in Team Fortress Classic at some point but they didn't in the end. However, these maps would eventually get released on the cover disc of the May 2001 issue of PC Gamer, but even then few people knew about the existence of these cut maps.
These maps for TFC were as follows:
Eleventh Hour (eleventh.bsp) by Chris Mair
Monkeypox (pox.bsp) by Chris Mair
The Signal (signal.bsp) by Jamie Mactaggart
The fourth map was never even completed, with the only evidence to it's existence being nothing but textures and a single skybox named "arctic". The unused textures included in the assets of those maps indicated at a snow themed level. It's unclear what it would had looked like, but my guesses it would likely be similar to the many early Borealis maps included in the 2003 Half-Life 2 leak. Also, did you know that the Borealis was also planned at some point in the Brotherhood of Arms-era of Team Fortress 2 as scene in a few of the screenshots released in 1998-2000? Some textures are clearly visible if you look carefully at them in first glance.
Here's a ValveTime article on Barking Dog Studios' work for Valve:
www.valvetime.co.uk/threads/barking-dog-studios-work-for-valve.257918/
I want to see a video of these maps be discussed here on UA-cam, as few people seem to know about the existence of these maps that Barking Dog Studios made for Team Fortress Classic.
It changed a lot. The brotherhood of arms version reminded me of just a war field.
The thing you said about the old uniform screen stuff loading. Its the proof that TFC is taking place during the great depression and WW2 era. Also some people are sure it takes place between 1936-1940s. While TF2 is taking place in the Cold War era.
Heavy, One of the many playable characters of the game Team Fortress 2, The first-person shooter game developed and published by Valve. It is the sequel to the 1996 mod Team Fortress for Quake and its 1999 remake, Team Fortress Classic. It was released as part of the video game bundle The Orange Box in October 2007 for Microsoft Windows and the Xbox 360. A PlayStation 3 version followed in December 2007 when The Orange Box was ported to the system. Later in development, the game was released as a standalone title for Windows in April 2008, and was updated to support Mac OS X in June 2010 with Linux following in February 2013. It is distributed online through Valve's digital retailer Steam, with Electronic Arts handling all physical and console ports of the game
Was the ability to move sentry guns a feature in the original version of tf2, because I don't remember it being there on the orange box for the xbox 360
Yeah,TF2 is great....but Valve is killing it.First cases and skins,Now pubs are inexistent.Sleep tight pootis. But atleast the tf comic #6 is out and its awesome.
Nutshiny Dude,i have been Playing since 2014 and i can sau that its not as big as it used to Be.
Nutshiny Sure,i believe You(not). There are less players online these days.Btw,yes, its dying. Not cuz of Overwatch, not cuz of csgo, because of Valve.
Nutshiny I didnt say it's dead, only that it doesnt have that many players anymore.
tf2 was my most played childhood game, i had 2.5k hours in it when i was just in year 6 and 7 in around 2012 and 2013, when the game was at its prime.
I strongly believe in valves ability to keep a game alive, so i like to believe that they are currently buisy working on alot of realy big secret stuff and they are going to polish tf2 later.
there are a little less players i do agree, the game is not in a good shape, but i have some faith that the game will take a good turn and get a quality boost when valve has the time, and when that happens im sure me and alot of other old players will pick up the game again.
Actually, it would seem from the Gaben ama on reddit that the tf team is getting ready to push a large update, and is starting to support more community involvement in the updates. also, the ESA rewind LAN and the fact that faceit has started supporting TF2 means that TF2 is starting to become a more popular esport, something valve has said it will try to support.
Thanks a lot!
maybe its just me but I there should've been some kind of music or ambience while you talked. it would have been more engaging imo. but great video either way, must've taken a lot of research.
Great video, very informative. but you should have shown the original first version of TF2 as much has changed since the 2007 version of TF2
The video would have been way to long than, that is rather a topic for a separat video.
The example of having a character die in mid air became obsolete with ragdolls, but the ability to blend animations is widely used today in game development.
Level of Detail (LoD) is still widely used in the industry.
Im sad for some reason because I don’t know if in TF3 , those guys will be another characters or not i hope not, I don’t want lose those amazingly charismatic characters classes i just want the next sequel, only want away prettier graphics with source 2 , a new interface, away cooler hud , more classes, still cartoonishly, more maps , a remake or a remastered of the old maps , more gore , new modes , an freaking huge mvm update and etc... That’s how i want TF3
I'm so glad they didn't stick with the generic military shooter aesthetic and made something super unique
We need the team fortress 2 invation 2003 as a full game!
About the LOD thing, LOD is used in TF2, although it's difficult to notice.
Honestly, I would be down for most of these to be finished.
Brotherhood of arms sounds like my dream game
Ngl the Military-esc version looked rad, I'd like to try it.
Those giant things you can build on the HL style TF are just huge models of suit battery’s from HL2
12:10 just by seeing that bridge and battlements i knew that was 2fort, i love but hate that map
what program did you use to view the animations and models
I have a feeling someone's going to recreate that D-Day map from the abandoned TF2 Brotherhood of arms for today's TF2 Frontline community update.
13:20 In war, a sapper is someone who either builds or destroys fortifications. He could've been some kind of builder similar to the Engineer.
Or maybe the Spy originally didnt had the ability to destroy the engineer's buildings, only for this separate class to be integrated.
I like how all the characters are very diverse in tf2
Tbh! Brotherhood of arms should’ve been a spiritual successor for Day Of Defeat rather than TF. Simply by the looks, it’s like “Valve’s Battlefield” as I kinda see it (because Day of defeat is WW2 and BF begins that way)
TF2 invasion sounds like if it was finished it would be actual great fun
The ending killed my ears
The map shown in the invasion gameplay looks like an extremely early version of 2fort.
ngl, team fortress brotherhood of arms looks dope
13:49 hl2 suit chargers everywhere its my dream
