I would have liked to touch upon these, but I couldn't find a place for them. Sorry to disappoint. - I considered a section discussing the TF2 economy, but I figured it would be really dry. I played a bit in 2007, then again in 2009, then again when it went free to play, and then I took a long break from it until Jungle Inferno. So I am by no means familiar with EVERYTHING this game went through! - I dislike higher viewmodel FOVs on most guns (with the exceptions of the Direct-Hit and Demo's grenade launchers). I can understand the need to take a break from the game. I was sold on TF2 from the moment it was announced making a day-one purchase mandatory. I've played the game for years but sometimes you just need to give the game a break. I'm sure there are people that have played all the way through because as you said in the video, there are still moments worth playing for. Games like Overwatch have waxed and waned while TF2 has been around, I wonder sometimes if Valve ever expected Team Fortress 2 to have the legs that it has. I don't think anyone that coded the game could have expected it to morph into the beast it now is. Thank goodness the Pyro was given the airblast for example. Previously the only way to take on a soldier as Pyro was to try to jump over his rockets and hope the splash propelled you closer to the enemy. I enjoyed this video for the summary of the game as it is now since delving into the "back in my day" talk probably would have bogged it down too much. I am sad that TF2 is unlikely to evolve much further now and the loss of Rick May making new soldier lines impossible, but it's given me more hours of fun than a game has any right to. I bet a lot of lapsed TF2 players still remember having a favorite weapon with a custom name or description or a beloved cosmetic. The game was great value before it went free to play.

Sorry, i overextended a little bit, but i hope you have a good day/night, and if not, hope it all gets better. (Also hope i didn't sound rude or super mad about it, i just loose it a little when people say 'A copied B!' Just because B is more known than A, and specially when they put B on the top) (Edit: grammar/spelling check)

I really hope someone from valve sees this and other community efforts and realizes how important it is to us. please keep developing it valve. or just give it to the community
It’s funny how I didn’t play this game until three years ago, yet I’ve watched so many tf2 videos that it felt like I’ve been playing this game since it’s launch.
The part about Valve having abandoned this game, with videos spanning one, two, three years back all mentioning the same thing, feels so painful now. Valve really did let the game and its community go. Nowadays, only the occasional developer over at Valve will willingly go and bug fix TF2 on their downtime. That's all we're able to get. Once a while during holidays they pick up a few community cosmetics to ship out as well. That's it. The game, as far as updates go, is dead in the water. But in terms of community size, and active player base, it's bigger than it's ever been! Insane to think about.
Literally my friends favorite line every time he plays, he’s a demo main. Mines is holy crap I can’t aim *gets a headshot* wow I guess I can *dies to anything* nvm I’m dead
2Fort at 2Am will forever be Super fun, effectively a better VRchat, were everyone is a memer. Also, animations are still quite loved, Pootis Engage and it's recent sequel are perfect examples.
what i love about TF2, is the Characters are more than just a classes merc. they'er more like the individual characters instead. and each character has rich personality
This was one of the best analysis videos on TF2 I have seen. I'm not a veteran, but I have 2k hours so I have some knowledge of the game. Here are some things that I want to add to the video: -Pyro: Pyro often gets hate because of his ability to stomp bad/new players without much effort. But once you fight sentient players he becomes much more difficult to play. He somewhat designed to be a combo class, quickly switching between weapons to maximize damage. You can pull off some insane plays combining fire, airblast, the flare gun, and the axtinguisher. Check out the youtuber Sketchek for some amazing examples. -Spy: Spy is considered by almost everyone to be the weakest class in TF2 and the problem comes down to his fundamental design. He relies on the enemy team being distracted, something that you cannot control. Playing spy really becomes difficult in organized competitive matches. You hardly ever see him picked and when you do he is almost always switched after dying or getting a kill. -Movement: God this is by far my favorite part of TF2. Something about the source engine movement in this game is just perfect. It might just be because TF2 was the game that taught me how to play FPS but I find that a lot of modern shooters really lack in this department. TF2 allows for air-strafing by pressing a directional key instead of W and smoothly moving your mouse in the direction you want to go. Taking advantage of air-strafing is probably one of the biggest differences between a casual player and a pubstomper. It is super important for rocket jumping as soldier, double jumping as scout, and surviving damage as medic. Rocket jumping especially is something that has kept me playing tf2. I've spent full nights on jump maps practicing the mechanic and I still don't think im good enough. -Competitive: I don't know what you meant by saying highlander was the preferred competitive type because I think most people agree that 6s is the format is king. The issue with competitive TF2 is that the game was not designed with competitive play in mind. This can be seen in some class designs (spy) and a lot of the map designs (CTF). The community has done a pretty good job creating their own 6s format that works. Unfortunately this means weapon bans, class restrictions, and a very limited map pool. Valve ""recently"" seam to have been updating weapons with competitive play in mind but there are still issues in Valve's version of competitive. It really is a shame that competitive TF2 never took off competitively because I think it would make a fantastic esport. The youtuber FUNKe has a great video about tf2 as an esport and I recommend you check it out. This video is a great introduction to your channel for me and I'm sure to check out some of your other stuff. Keep them comming- PS: I would recommend using the following console commands. TF2s default interp rates are disgusting and cause a noticeable delay when firing projectile weapons. cl_interp 0 (the delay between firing and the projectile coming out) cl_interp_ratio 2 (prevents packet loss caused by cl_interp 0) rate 80000 (this is really dependent on your internet speed. Usually set between 60000 and 80000) cl_updaterate 66 (tf2 servers run at 66hz so you want to be in sync) cl_cmdrate 66 (same as above)
-"The issue with competitive TF2 is that the game was not designed with competitive play in mind." - -Thaaaaank you. This is the exact thing that's bugging TF2 Comp. - When Liam said on competitive 6v6 1:08:41- "I believe this is how tf2 was meant to be played" I visibly recoiled lol. TF2 was never -designed with 6v6 balance in mind. It was never meant to be competitive but if people could extract competitive play out of it, they had -the freedom to try. - -I actually believe that TF2's lifespan can be attributed to the fact that it was a casual experience. - - * 12v12, which is rare today, as for some fucked up reason, low playercount is the new black. - - * No competitive scene nor plans to have one, it was purely fun and games. - - * Large focus on the community, with all the necessary tools to make maps, mods, addons, plugins, you name it. - - Unfortunately, people design games off of TF2's exterior and not what's in it's heart. The community that loves to play the game because it is fun, not only because they want to improve...
“I guess people see medics ability to keep the team alive as overwhelming” It is But that’s the fun part just the constant rush of adren- oh god everyone’s dead and I’m in the middle of the entire enemy team- speaking of adrenaline!
I’m just starting out playing TF2 and no matter how many times I play I will always have a big stupid grin on my face and I always thank valve for making this masterpiece of a game. Nice work and I love your retrospectives on some of my favorite game franchises! Excellent job man!
TF2 was the first game I got on the first computer I built when I was very young. I remember playing as the sniper with my sister, who played as the spy. I still have some brief recordings of my friends and I playing, our pre-pubescent voices squeakier than a mouse's. I'm happy to see it still thriving. God bless you for TF2, Valve. You provided some of my best childhood memories.
Beta tester here, loved the game at first sight, always was fond of team shooters, I later went to play TF2 competitevly at the the highest level and I'd go as far as to say I was the best demoman, then traded, for a over 1000 key backpack, and lost my account. Came back in 2017 after jungle inferno and I play everyday the same game I loved when it was in beta. My only issue is taking the game seriously, even if its comp, because this game wasn't built around 1v1, 9v9,6v6, and any type of serious play. This game is just a wacky all around experience and thinking that this game has any tactical side to it, it's very funny.
As a brand new player to this game, I love medic because I suck at aiming. Doesn't stop me from trying to play scout tho In all seriousness, I have never had so much fun in a single week than I have with TF2. The game has been in my steam library since 2013, and I have been kicking myself for not picking it up sooner. It's easy to see that this game is special thanks to its high skill ceilings for its classes and its hilarious and welcoming community. I don't have much experience yet, but here is an exchange that will probably stick with me til the end of time lol (Me, a Scout being pocketed by a Medic) Heavy: *Yelling in fake Russian accent* "Medic, why you only heal Scout?" Medic: *In pretty good fake German accent* "As they say, gotta go fast." Heavy: *In normal speaking voice* "Fair enough have a nice day." Me: *dies to getting juggled by a god-like demoman*
First off: STONKS Second, I just started playing and my favorite things have been suicide dancing with a bunch of friendlies and people thanking me for the teleporter. And the ONE LINERS! And the sfm! I’m just gonna stop now before it’s too late
One of my favorite TF2 moments was in a competitive 6v6 lobby. Our team had been wiped out and was just respawning, and it was me (a scout) and our Medic against basically every enemy player. So he starts healing me, and I tell him to get out of there, and he does. I pepper the enemy and, without managing to kill any of them or even deal any real damage, die horribly. But then comes our Medic, now with full Kritz, and our soldier, and our opponents go right down. Kinda weird that one of my favorite memories involves me dying horribly, but sometimes that’s how TF2 goes.
Haha, this takes me back to the summer of 2016. I was in between my freshman and sophomore years of high school, and I spent a probably downright unhealthy amount of time playing competitive TF2 with my friends. We weren’t really any good(we named our team “Wood 1 Warriors,” Wood 1 being the lowest rank you can have in TF2 matchmaking). I mained Pyro, and I honestly can’t count the amount of games that we won because of the air blast. Good times.
No lie same here I actually started playing online tf2 on 2015 and been playing since 2012 on orange box. Also I may have seen you guys in a match I played alot around that time to
Thanks for the video! I am a tf2 player only since roughtly a month ago and I mostly play sniper, spy and scout. I realize now why is tf2 so special and why I keep coming back I Never was there in 2010 to the golden era of valve games: gmod, tf2, left 4 dead etc now I am playing them after years of seeing random videos in sfm or gameplay. Tho tf2 was introduced to me with sfm animations and the others gameplay mostly. Since I was born in 2005 I Never really experienced this golden age I am just kinda there to pick up the pieces. Your video further motivated me to git gud at tf2. Even when I did not play tf2 I felt really sad when Rick May passed away the montages and the people online playing their respects. I am truly envious that I coudn't experience this era of wonder and fun.
1:21:13 Look ma', I'm on a Liam Triforce video! Another great video, dude. Really made me want to reinstall the game and play a few matches for the first time in 5 years.
The part that really has held me to this game are the memories that have been implanted in my brain. My close friend brought me into it as a student of sorts and he taught me everything I know. It’s what sparked our friendship. He left TF2 and gave me all of the stuff he would wear, the stuff I would see building with him, pocketing him, and him pocketing my noob-ass. Still to this day I ONLY ever wear his iconic engineer loadout and cosmetics. Besides this, I spent my 1000th hour on TF2 mourning and saluting a statue of Rick May on Turbine with other people I’ll never meet again. It was what I wanted, enjoying and playing a game with people who enjoy the game as much as I do, even if I don’t know them. This is what really keeps this game together. The fact that, friends come and go, students become teachers, but no matter what you’ll find yourself with others who enjoy it as much as you do be it 100 hours to 1000 hours. (Of course with the occasional bots lol). I may be just an average Joe, but this really what gives the game a warm place in my heart.
i like to think that tf2 is a lot like melee, having mechanics so deep and such varied gameplay that the game endlessly grows and changes, with an evergreen type metta
my answer is "i like being hated for getting a 6 killstreak while not even knowing how to play" i also like engineer because he just requires placement knowledge, no fighting knowledge most of the time
When I started playing tf2, I picked my main based on the meet the team shorts. Obviously I picked spy, given meet the spy was easily the coolest one. I mean how cool is it to literally outsmart an entire team. Obviously this is rare in game but when it happens it’s great
I just recently started playing tf2, and I never really wanted to play. I had seen the SFM videos and watched others play, but i never decided to play because the game had been out for so long and I thought most would be better than me. (this still is true but they are more supportive than i thought they would be) and about a month ago, I was just browsing Steam feeling bored. And then I found tf2 in my library and said: "what the hell, I'll give it a shot" and to sum it up, in the last 5 days ive played 30+ hours. Since im a beginner, I have been looking up tips for each class, desperately trying to improve and find out the best weapons to use, and this video helped so much. And I just wanted to thank you, because thoughout this whole video, I was taking in everything you were saying, and it helped me so much. AND I AM ADDICTED TO TF2!
I bought the original half-life back in 98 or 99 and never played it much but after a couple years of buddy introduced me to TFC and for a while I was obsessed with that game. me and him would form our own clans, run servers, the works. Eventually as I got into other things like being in a band toward my later years in high school I had pretty much stop playing video games altogether for a while and only recently got back i to them. it struck me how they changed the art style and how dedicated the community to the sequel has been in the years since it came out out. I love you original TFC with all my heart and makes me happy to see so many people got to enjoy that type of gameplay. Seeing you run through 2fort brings back so many memories.
I'm new to your channel but this is a great video dude. I used to play TF2 religiously, dropped off around the time of End of the Line and now it's been on my mind again. Glad people haven't forgotten it and I'm happy to see it getting the recognition it deserves for it's impact on class-based shooters.
Been playing since it launched in 2007, I remember actually buying it to play Half Life Episode 2 rather than for TF2 or even Portal. But my god ever since I set foot on Dustbowl my gaming hobby would change forever. It's been a crazy 13 year ride seeing the game evolve with new weapons, maps and in my opinion pioneering the transformative industry landscape of cosmetic microtransactions in video games. Back then only TF2 was mocked for being a hat simulator and crazily suggesting people would pay real money for a cosmetic? Well look what we have now. Valve support hasn't been the same for years but the game lives on through the die hard fan base we are. Until TF2 officially closes its servers I'll stay by the community and join you all for another round of 24/7 2Fort
This is literally the ultimate TF2 essay video, from a history lesson to class breakdowns to unlocks, community and other stuff, really good stuff man.
I don't think anything is more satisfying in TF2 than hitting someone with a well time crusaders crossbow bolt to save someone's life from burst damage. I've had teammates praising my like a messiah for consistently hitting crossbow bolts to save lives.
Meet the Team and Winglets SFMs is what got me into TF2, I’ve been playing since 2017 a few months before Jungle Inferno, but I’ve had to stop as my pc just couldn’t run it anymore. However, I definitely plan on coming back first chance I get
A fun thing about the teleporter: When a teleporter is at level 1, that is when you should reserve it for slower classes. When it reaches level 2, if nobody’s respawning soon or in spawn, feel free to take it! Even if you’re a scout. Instant teleportation is far faster than running to the front lines. If it’s level 3, it literally doesn’t matter what the status of your team is, the teleporter charges so fast even the scout could run to frontlines and he would not even make it before it finishes recharging. tldr: Reservations are only really important when a teleporter is at a very low level. Above, it only matters if people are either dead or respawning (at level 2), or it doesn’t really matter at all. (at level 3)
as someone who primarily plays either pyro or engineer, the sections about both those classes was especially A+. i admit i started playing pyro because of the low skill floor and at the time i was a young teen and not very good at shooter games (i started playing back in the orange box days), but now that i'm an adult and i have a lot more experience with shooters in general, it's wild to me how fun pyro becomes once you start getting a little bit more skilled. successfully reflecting projectiles is SUCH a rush, and juggling an ubered enemy away from a chokepoint is wildly fucking useful for your team if you can pull it off. the w+m1 pyros are annoying but getting better at pyro is *so* satisfying. engineer however is the class i have the fondest association with. back when i played it more as a teenager i played a lot of dustbowl in one steam group's dedicated tf2 server, and one match i was a red engineer, and i set my engineer nest right in that little building next to the very first point on dustbowl. the enemy team tried everything they could to dislodge my sentry but not a single one of them was able to damage my sentry faster than i was able to repair it w my dispenser right next to the sentry. they tried everything. eventually people on the enemy team started switching to spy to try and counter me, but i wrenched every single person who stepped into my sentry nest so as a result *every* spy who tried to sneak in and sap my stuff got my wrench in their face the moment they so much as breathed in my direction. i got the most kills of everyone in the round by far and dominated at least five different people. the high that i felt during that match was unrivaled.
i think the main reason i love this game so much is that you never know what youre gonna get. in other games you get relative consistency, when you play CSGO youre gonna shoot some dudes to get money to but a new gun to shoot a dude, Apex youre gonna drop in and fight people to be the last team standing, etc. but with TF2 you could join into a match and find that everyone is congaing on the 2Fort bridge and then one person kills another and it instantly devolves into chaos, and then when that's over you go play a relatively serious game of PL_Upward and have just as good a time doing both.
about pyro when my sister played tf2 she didnt onow what airblast was and still doesnt so when she started with the phlog i told her that on paper its amazing and thats all she seemed to heard never knowing what airblast is
4:35 That actually sounds cool as hell. I wish there was an option like that in TF2 now. Imagine snooping on enemy VC after you get backstabs to hear them rage. Ahhhh, it'd be great.
i met one of my close friends on an empty server 2 years ago we talk alllll the time still, they don't play tf2 much anymore but we play a bunch of other games together still. this is why i hate the bots, bots cannot offer that connection.
As a scout main, I support random crits. They keep me on my toes, and they remind me to not be such an idiot. As a former medic main, I absolutely DESPISE! Random crits! Especially if one gets me just before I can pop Uber. I’m conflicted internally
As a medic main, I fucking hate random crits HOW DO I KEEP GETTING HIT WITH CROCKETS WHAT THE HELL As someone who spends a stupid amount of time on 2fort with the sticky jumper and pan to kill tunnel visioned snipers, I love random crits
Dicking around in Sandbox servers, bot servers or MvM is alwaysa a treat and to leave it for so long but come back to see it very rarely change, is always another treat... such a great game
I started this game when it was called Team Fortress Classic. There was this cool little exploit I would do. The spy had the ability to fake his own death, but if you built a sentry on top of his body, he can't get up again until the sentry got destroyed or had to disconnect from the server.
*What is valve doing to maintain it's popularity?" At the moment? Nothing. And as a tf2 veteran it fills me with sadness to see the game decline so much solely due to it being left to rot
Sidenote, the original concept of TF2 Brotherhood of arms, feels a lot like what we got in Hell let loose, so that's a good way to point at how things may have turned out, with obvious differences in engine and setting.
Hill Top Zone as the intro for engineer is the best thing I've ever heard. I listen to that song a lot when playing, and it fits really well with engine.
I was an old player of tf2, but while I think a lot og newer players are all about more competitive play like 6v6, i was really a big fan of the community side. 12v12 meant you fucking up or around didn't have that much of an impact, so a lot of the odius was taken off playing optimally and mote about just having fun. You had a mix of try hards, memers, newbs and everything in between, and those times just chilling on servers for hours interacting with people was the best part of my middle and high school time. You'd interact with players, for rivalries, friendships, have crouching dance parties with the enemy pyro in the basement, laugh as you watched a spy delete one by one the 5 unaware snipers doping around on 2fort balcony and the engineer dance party going on in the intel room. While a lot of what I hear from lazy purple and funke and liam are all about playing the game skillfully, for me, the part of tf2 that was special for me, the part that no other game can ever replicate, was this otherworldly community that you would get lost in for hours, and I feel that part of tf2 has just been lost to time. I miss being able to log onto a random server and laugh at all the stupid and wonderful goings on.
Even though I only got the game after Jungle Inferno came. I am very happy to see you are aware every class has a skill ceiling above 0 IQ smooth brain. And that you respect pyro. He definetly got a new respect from many people after that update, and his utility as an all around supporter with offense main focus base intent really started getting more recognition. Of course there is the stereotype. But if you are at all past that point, a pyro can turn from an annoying W+M1 into a deadly nuisance that can destroy a whole team.

Insane to think about.

what i love about TF2, is the Characters are more than just a classes merc. they'er more like the individual characters instead. and each character has rich personality
This was one of the best analysis videos on TF2 I have seen. I'm not a veteran, but I have 2k hours so I have some knowledge of the game. Here are some things that I want to add to the video:
-Pyro: Pyro often gets hate because of his ability to stomp bad/new players without much effort.
Keep them comming-
PS: I would recommend using the following console commands. TF2s default interp rates are disgusting and cause a noticeable delay when firing projectile weapons.
cl_interp 0 (the delay between firing and the projectile coming out)
cl_interp_ratio 2 (prevents packet loss caused by cl_interp 0)
rate 80000 (this is really dependent on your internet speed. Usually set between 60000 and 80000)
cl_updaterate 66 (tf2 servers run at 66hz so you want to be in sync)
cl_cmdrate 66 (same as above)
But baguette man has your back!
All very good points. But please break your paragraphs. Walls of text are a strain on the eyes.
-"The issue with competitive TF2 is that the game was not designed with competitive play in mind."
-
-Thaaaaank you. This is the exact thing that's bugging TF2 Comp.
-
When Liam said on competitive 6v6 1:08:41- "I believe this is how tf2 was meant to be played" I visibly recoiled lol. TF2 was never
-designed with 6v6 balance in mind. It was never meant to be competitive but if people could extract competitive play out of it, they had
-the freedom to try.
-
-I actually believe that TF2's lifespan can be attributed to the fact that it was a casual experience.
-
- * 12v12, which is rare today, as for some fucked up reason, low playercount is the new black.
-
- * No competitive scene nor plans to have one, it was purely fun and games.
-
- * Large focus on the community, with all the necessary tools to make maps, mods, addons, plugins, you name it.
-
- Unfortunately, people design games off of TF2's exterior and not what's in it's heart. The community that loves to play the game because it is fun, not only because they want to improve...
Spy: You may have planned around my plan to plan around my plan to plan for your plan, but did you plan for *this?*

Oh yea? Whats your ign?

II quit a whole ago since II got scammmed out of a lot, and its made me give me bad memorys now sadly after 1500 hours :(
One of my favorite TF2 moments was in a competitive 6v6 lobby.
Good times.
Hey that was when I started playing tf2 too. One of the many reasons the summer of 2016 was the best summer ever for me.

I love how much depth every Class has and the feeling that you still haven't learned everything about a class even after 1000+ hours of play.

A fun thing about the teleporter:
When a teleporter is at level 1, that is when you should reserve it for slower classes.

Man I wish I had good friends to play TF2 with during weekdays
as someone who primarily plays either pyro or engineer, the sections about both those classes was especially A+. i admit i started playing pyro because of the low skill floor and at the time i was a young teen and not very good at shooter games (i started playing back in the orange box days), but now that i'm an adult and i have a lot more experience with shooters in general, it's wild to me how fun pyro becomes once you start getting a little bit more skilled. successfully reflecting projectiles is SUCH a rush, and juggling an ubered enemy away from a chokepoint is wildly fucking useful for your team if you can pull it off. the w+m1 pyros are annoying but getting better at pyro is *so* satisfying.
engineer however is the class i have the fondest association with. back when i played it more as a teenager i played a lot of dustbowl in one steam group's dedicated tf2 server, and one match i was a red engineer, and i set my engineer nest right in that little building next to the very first point on dustbowl. the enemy team tried everything they could to dislodge my sentry but not a single one of them was able to damage my sentry faster than i was able to repair it w my dispenser right next to the sentry. they tried everything. eventually people on the enemy team started switching to spy to try and counter me, but i wrenched every single person who stepped into my sentry nest so as a result *every* spy who tried to sneak in and sap my stuff got my wrench in their face the moment they so much as breathed in my direction. i got the most kills of everyone in the round by far and dominated at least five different people. the high that i felt during that match was unrivaled.
When I heard the soldier music I teared up.
RIP Rick May
i think the main reason i love this game so much is that you never know what youre gonna get. in other games you get relative consistency, when you play CSGO youre gonna shoot some dudes to get money to but a new gun to shoot a dude, Apex youre gonna drop in and fight people to be the last team standing, etc. but with TF2 you could join into a match and find that everyone is congaing on the 2Fort bridge and then one person kills another and it instantly devolves into chaos, and then when that's over you go play a relatively serious game of PL_Upward and have just as good a time doing both.

I started this game when it was called Team Fortress Classic. There was this cool little exploit I would do. The spy had the ability to fake his own death, but if you built a sentry on top of his body, he can't get up again until the sentry got destroyed or had to disconnect from the server.

Wtf you mean “retrospective?”
Glad to see some Titanfall 2 gameplay, nice vid man.
Sorry for calling you out in the suijin match, I got really excited.
