Hi guys, welcome to my channel! In today’s video I talk about 8 personality traits I think you need to have in order to become an airline pilot. Being an airline pilot is not just about flying the actual aircraft. Many things determine whether you fit in a cockpit environment and those things will definitely be checked during an assessment at a flight school or airline. There are a few competences which flight schools and airlines will always look for when they hire their people.
Of course there are many more character traits needed which can be developed by experience, such as a form of airmanship/leadership for example. The ones mentioned above are just the basic points. What do you think should be added to this list and why? I always love to read your comments guys, even though I don’t respond often!
Thank you so much for watching this video! If you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to comment below and maybe I will be answering your question in the next video. If you liked my video do not forget to SUBSCRIBE and THUMBS UP!
1. Motivation: how passionate are you?
2. Perseverance: competition is fierce.
3. Attitude: professionalism, modesty
4. Team player: work together in a team
5. Decisiveness: Analyze information quickly. Decisions under stress. You can become better at it by training
6. Stress Resistance: Long hours, time difference, being away from home,
7. Progression: Are you able to learn quickly, adapt yourself, are you better at your second?
8. Be ok: Be an easy going person. Ask yourself, do you want to fly with not an easy going person?
Keep these traits in mind
Lovely Video! Forgive me for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Rozardner Flying Bird Reality (just google it)? It is an awesome one off product for how to get pilot license minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my BF finally got cool results with it.
Thank u!
Haha progression, I’m a simracer at the moment during this holiday and since as a 14-year old there isn’t much to do during this COVID-19 outbreak and my 1st laptime tends to be better than my second😂 my third tends to be much better though
Thank you so much for summing it up! ~♡
thank you
Love that U-Boat model.
me too
paul Smith yeah , me to , would love to sink with her thou ! 😂😍
Looks to me like a German VII C boat, famously portrayed as U-96 in the movie "Das Boot". Never seen a model of this size, though.
5:02 People from Southern Italy would clap their hands on such a soft Landing. And shortly afterwards they would ask you to take off again to repeat such a Landing (in the same way as people asked Luciano Pavarotti to sing again the song).
I was in a KLM flight into Schipol when visibility was zero and there was some cross wind. Everybody clapped when we landed safely. Didn't matter where they were from.
Glad you mentioned point 8. It’s not spoken about in school. Worst thing is to be stuck with a grump captain for long hours. Thanks for posting
I truly sympathise and pity the first officers that end up trapped with a grumpy captain. Poor CRM like that had crashed more than one plane. Hundreds of people have died per flight because the captain bullied the first officer into silent shutdown, making him too scared to challenge the captain or even take the controls until it’s far too late once said captain started making serious mistakes.
your advice will work for many non pilots as well, i love the message girl
I’m a Japanese girl and trying to be an pilot. This video motivated me a lot. Thank you❤️
Gravity is a really good persuader with making decisions.
Excellent upfront advice...they should teach that these qualities are necessary for succeeding in any endeavor. Passion is a quality missing for many people to go forward in life no matter your age...but Passion sometimes is not enough. Keeping an open mind, being persistent and always be learning even when times get tough. Proud of you Michelle.
As an RC helicopter pilot (flying true CCPM (Collective Cyclic Pitch Mixing) helicopters, not electronically stabilized quad-copters), I've always appreciated the following quote from American news icon Harry Reasoner:
"The thing is, helicopters are different from planes. An airplane by its very nature wants to fly and, if not interfered with too strongly by unusual events or by a deliberately incompetent pilot, it will fly. A helicopter does not want to fly. It is maintained in the air by a variety of forces and controls working in opposition to each other and, if there is any disturbance in this delicate balance, the helicopter stops flying; immediately and disastrously. There is no such thing as a gliding helicopter."
"This is why being a helicopter pilot is so different from being an airplane pilot, and why in generality, airplane pilots are open, clear-eyed, buoyant extroverts, and helicopter pilots are brooding introspective anticipators of trouble. They know if something bad has not happened it is about to."
Harry Reasoner
That landing was pristine 🤩🤩🤩
i wanna be a pilot in the future , when i was young i use to enjoy travelling , i used to think being a pilot is cool the uniform is dope ..... but now
im 18 and i really wanna be pilot as i have interest in aviation and how it works and yeah......i get that inner motivation to persevere my career in the aviation industry, when i think bout it...
I was expecting stuff more in the lines of: attention to detail, perfectionist, organized, diligent. I'm heading to flight school in May. The dream is to become a Patagonian bush pilot :) Groetjes!
Love your evaluation of desired traits to be a pilot. You seen like someone who would be an awesome colleague to have in and out of the cockpit.
Thank you very much Michelle for your information. That was very valuable.
Excellent video. How exactly would you practice becoming more decisive?
Another personality trait that is important is being self-reflected, knowing about your own weaknesses, strengths and limitations as well as being patient. A very nervous, impatient person probably won't be happy with this job
Mark Lehmann agreed, but you know what in this life and death career, if you can't take the heat then stay out of the kitchen.
Mark Lehmann agreed, but you know what in this life and death career, if anyone interested cannot take the heat then stay out of the kitchen.
life and death career? Are we talking about the same job? There are jobs that are a lot more risky than being an airline pilot. Or are you talking about employment security?
Mark Lehmann not just pilot career, they are most jobs i can agree on .
But for that employment security, well that's between you and the employer as long as you can perform to maximum it would satisfy the employer, then chances are your job will be safe.
These personality traits are sometimes called:
judging (not waiting to the last chance to commit to a plan)
low Neuroticism (able to stay calm under stress and danger)
rational (able to update believes / change your plan based on data)
Conscientiousness (plan ahead, get it right and mind the details)
You also need independence / just the right level of disagreeableness as in you do speak up in a professional concise manner if something is possibly wrong and you are not afraid to differ and explain why.
I realised I learn quickly in sport when I'm focus and not lazy, and I don't learn maths quickly because I'm lazy and don't enjoy it but that's what i have to do to become a pilot. Thanks.
Thanks for your video. It's important for us to know if we really are prepared for this job.
My favorite Airline is American
Can you sub to my channel and I will sub back 😃
What a nice and thoughtful video. This should be used as an intro on flight school web pages. Thanks
Thank you for posting this video. Tomorrow is my first solo and the points you cover are a really good check in to make sure I am pointed in the right direction.
These advices and tips are really helpful! I've been really inspired by you (especially because you're a woman) ever since I've decided to pursue on becoming a pilot! Thank you~♡
On this side of the pond we can learn a few things about professionalism, eloquence and thoughtfulness from our European colleagues. Good points on this video.
I think those qualities are needed in every job
You're very beautiful and inspirational, Michelle. Bless you!
Hello, I've been enjoying your videos much, thanks.
Nice list, but add having the attitude of a captain-be confident, trained, knowledgeable and be situationaly aware at all times. There will come a time when you may need to display leadership even if you are a lowly FO. respect authority and know how and when to use it.
I'm ready for anything in order to be a pilot!!
Well said! BTW: really enjoyed the Boeing/Airbus debate between you and Capt Joey! Great stuff!
Bullying in the cockpit has caused many a dire consequence, passengers always come first
:) Nice submarine model in the background. Great video btw.
Its Interesting that you sit in from of a submarnie, Cool Model.
Hey
Hello Great videos have a nice day
HockeyDay thanks for saying that my vids are Great 😃 Have a Nice Day too!
HockeyDay she might like sinking as well once in a while. ! 😂
Good advice for any job. Great clip. Thanks.
Always a joy to watch your informative movies :D
That’s quite a Fantastic German U Boat model you have as a showpiece........Great Video!
Forget the 8 Personality Traits Michelle - just tells us more about that cool U-Boat/sub behind you.
😂😂😂
Nice advices, Michelle and it was also a nice landing :)
Hi ,it’s good to see that you are a pro luv your videos
Thank you for this lovely video.👍
No desire to be a pilot, but I'm in love with that submarine :)
I like your factual videos. Well done.
That landing was a butter !
Hi, compliments from an old dutch captain for these videos which could be an eye opener and/or help for young people thinking about a pilot career. It's painting a clear picture of the industry as is in 2018. The U-boot is quite funny I think, one has to dive deep sometimes to later succeed in reaching high flight-levels :-)
The best pilot channel 😊
Who built the Type XII U-Boat model? Very nice. Keep up the great and inspirational work.
I'd Love to know if you have a favourite cruise altitude?what v/s do you use when ascending and descending? and what did you do when you completed your first passenger landing and the plane finally came to a stop? did you cheer?were you shaking? oh and nice U-Boat
Good advice, Very mature and comprehensive.
I drive a desk because flying planes is too boring. If I could get paid the same to drop cargo in the jungle, flying 500 ft AGL, in VFR minimums, alone, between mountains, and sweating every minute of it, preferably in a helicopter, then I'd be a professional pilot.
pilot dutch gal, can you do a video on that German U boat behind you?
Is that your Type VII model in the background?! Thats's awesome!. I want one.
Yes, it's a type VII Atlantic U-boat. You can just see the forward portion of the diesel fuel tank on the port side. A type IX doesn't have this feature. Neat model all around and I'm sure there is a story there.
thank you so much for your amazing video. I love travelling and I love being in airports. I always enjoy watching airplanes landing and taking off. as a pilot, do you think these reasons are enough to become a pilot? I would appreciate it if you could answer my question.
I love your way of motivation i love you dear
Kudo's for the submarine at the background. 👍
Sorry to be two years late but I would add two more traits, maybe the most important: 1. stability, not being scared off by any event and 2. multitasking, being able to do many things at the same time.
Wow! U really buttered that landing! :)
Nice vidéo Michelle, thanks !!
Charming.
Thanks for your very informative about being Pilot.
I got demedicaled for being an introvert, and the doctor who made that call said she was worried that id have trouble talking to atc or other pilots. I explained that being an introvert isn't the same thing as being pathologically shy, and that I've dealt with lots of other pilots and atc already, including the ones who administered flight tests but I was told the decision was already made. I told her if this was an issue they should have raised it before I spent most of my money on training; she didn't seem to care. When I threatened legal action, she told me the police would be in touch. They havnt been.
You do not want to get on these peoples bad side.
What country is this in? How did they know that you are a introvert?
0:42 Hold up; is there really that big of a competition? At this crisis, I think they might as well hire anyone. Not that I'm the lazy kind, but at this point there's quite some desperation, is that right?
Michelle, I absolutely loved the landing... you are focused on the task and your beautiful blond hair is an ode to girl power! 😎🙏
My favorite pilot❤
This woman is amazing!...
Sergio Cobos
Yes, she is. Such a well balanced, and engaging girl. Wonderful.
Fantastic landing thanks for the video ✈💯👍🏼
Interesting that the PF at your company uses VSD & Terrain on the ND. We do it the other way around.. PF uses Wx and PM uses VSD terrain.
That's good one! Well Mam can you make a video on one day of pilot life!!..
Thank you,I love your videos
Thanks
If you sub to my channel I will sub back 😃
NICOCRAFT ok
Anay Kulkarni ok i subbed to you 😃
NICOCRAFT me too
Love your videos❣👍
Are high neuroticism a huge problem for a pilot? I would say that thoose traits make me a good cardriver at least, because I don't take stupid risks and allways fantasizing about worst-case scenarios.
Nice video Michelle :).
1 - motivação 2-perserveranca 3-atitudes 4-joga em equipe 5-resistence estrrsse 6-resultado progredir -7 estar bem
Fantastic type VII model, is it yours?
One of my Interview Questions! 😆
Dutchpilotgirl if had to chang to became pilot I’m not worried it’s like any job it’s team work and knowing the procall of job , your personality has a lot to with this job , Passion number one ☝️ responsibility is 2 because your not just flying for you to be the best pilot in company you have to think of all issues that met came along way , so you need to be ready for it physically and mentally and 3 the motivation you real needed positive vibes..and love traveling And away from your family and friends you remember there time you see them for long period of time ...yeah responsibility, passion and positive vibes are key word ..thank for sharing your feedback on what it takes to become a pilot 👩✈️...
Taking some training in U boot?. Do you make plastic modelling? It’s Good stress control
Great video 👍👍👍👍👍
Smart! Fact, desire means zip if there are no jobs. I know cuz when I graduated with ten yrs experience 900hrs every rating except ATP and the best college ERAU it didn't matter! Joining the Navy was it,so I flew with the Navy and they sucked! Didn't join and didn't fly the line. Had I been flying now I could have brought a type rating and got a line job. You lucked out kid, plus brains too! LOL!
what airline you flyin? i love dutch...and what submarine is that behind you? is that the kursk?
I wish could have seen this video before, just got into the airline, maybe any advice to deal with training and all that stuff?
Hi
I really want to ask you something, I'm Muslim girl and I really really wanna be pilot and want to study it in Canada but I scared that I will receive racism!! I want your advice
Racim should never putt you down my dear
@@Shesfantaa thanks ❤
how do you deal with boredom in mid flight?
once the fms is set up there isnt much you can do
PERFECT VIDEO!!!!!!!!!! YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I realized my dream: I'm now a perfect armchair pilot.
Thank you.
Attitude is very important for a pilot (wink)
EinkOLED I see what you did there!
Being a pilot and working as a pilot are two different things.
I love being a pilot, I would hate working as a pilot.
Nice U-boat in the background
Hello , thanks again for your video..I have just one question and I will be really very thankful to you if you'll answer me... actually I'm 18 year old girl I'm just 5 feet tall...so can I become pilot with such a height?
I want to be a pilot
Takakuraken San me too
Takakuraken San me too
Then go to your local airport and take a discovery flight! What are you waiting for? :D
Takakuraken San You need to get a job at McDonalds at your local airport so you can work your way up there. Memory this sentence since you will kneed it when you become a captain: "Hello ladies and gentlemen? Would you like to have fries with that?"
Phyuck Yiu Your momma wear army boots while ordering mcd..
How DO you deal with stress?
i searched pilot personality on Google and pilots are more concrete thinkers, and I'm an abstract philosophical thinker. and i want to be a pilot.
Do you need to have a great memory span and focus when becoming a pilot? Is there a way to train it? I'm worried because I could be distracted sometimes and it wouldn't be good for the flight if I forgot or missed something (i.e. turning anti-ice or continuous ignition on in icing or turbulent conditions respectively and forgetting to turn it off once clear of the conditions )
Yes, both are important. Being easily distracted might be a dealbraker for this job. How old are you?
Well for training, i usually practice math exercise with out calculator while listening music i love, that way you'll learn to ignore the outisde world and keep yourself focus on the activitie you're performing. It worked for me, perhaps you should try it.
It does sometimes feel like managing distractions is about 90% of the job! You do really learn how to prioritise well, but you definitely need to be rigorous, both with formal checklists and your overall scan of the flight deck. Picking up when something is set differently from normal does become almost second nature.
The fact that you notice that about yourself is actually really good. Shows that you have good attention to detail. The best thing you can do is constantly be challenging yourself. The rest will come with time and practice.
I don't know about the focus part, but for the memory improvements you can exercise with a deck of cards. Just place all the cards on a table with the numbers down, and flip & match. And as general advise, stay hydrated and make sure you've had enough rest, it'll help you use your brain as efficiently as possible.
Most important things to know! This people can make their dreams come true when ever they wanted! I mean... look at their lives! They live in a perfect condition and we poor people are undeveloped and lack of guidance and discipline! Even poor at financial!
My moms life is in danger... like really really bad danger I‘m a 15 y/o aviation dreamer... thinking about becoming a pilot for a few years now. Does the point Preseverance fit into my situation as I am currently having depressions and some worse things? Is this a example of how not to have a personality or is it a to extreme case and u meant a huge failed test? I just want to know the scale for that term.
I am a girl
15 years old and want to be a pilot
It's my Dream!!! ❤️
But........
Weak in maths
Weak in science subjects
But I am motivated
I am a shy girl who has little number of friends... Actually I am not a out going person at all😕
But still my dream is to be a pilot❤️🙂
I would love to be a pilot, problem is, I have too many interests, so I dabble with hang gliding.
Is that a Kriegsmarine U-boat behind you?
Please make a video like ''What You Need In Order To Become An Airline Pilot who is married with me''
can you tell me please how much marks should i obtain in class 12 and what would be height should i have for an international pilot
Great video, thanks :) Could you please add subtitle to your videos?
I am a Skydiver, do you think I can become a pilot as well. ? That will be AWESOME 😎 !
Where did you get this boat model? Scale?
