CELESTIAL PEARL DANIOS (CPD) | How many can I put in a tank

  • Celestial Pearl Danios or galaxy rasboras are a fantastic fish for any size aquarium, but how many can I put into a tank? I hope to help answer that question in today's Celestial Pearl Danio species profile.
    First off I would like to clear up some confusion. While they were originally called galaxy rasboras, they were found to not belong to that group of fish so the correct name for these fish is celestial pearl danios or danio margaritatus.
    I have been keeping celestial pearl danios now for a year and have been breeding them for 8 months. So I have seen all the different live stages of them from newly hatched fry to adult CPDs. And to clarify something that I didn't mention in the video, I have kept 6 in a 5 gallon tank perfectly fine and that is actually the tank size I bred them in.
    After keeping celestial pearl danios for this amount of time I have come to some conclusions based on what I have seen in my tanks. I think there is a social hierarchy within the shoals of CPDs. I think that this social hierarchy dictates the number of fish you can keep in a tank. As I said in the video I had about 30 adults living in my 27 gallon cube with no problems what so ever. After adding 80 juveniles to see if that would change the way they behaved in terms of schooling or shoaling I did not notice a large difference in their behavior. They did not start schooling with an increase of numbers, though I had been hoping they would.
    I eventually started to have the runts dying off in my aquarium, which was to be expected since I didn't cull any of the smallest fish when I was raising them up so I was not surprised by them dying. Then I started to notice healthy juveniles that had not issues start developing a pinched fin, raspy breathing, and pinched pectoral fins. I recognized that this was a stress induced problem and immediately started moving them out of tank into another tank. I did this with 4 celestial pearl danios as mentioned in the video and 3 of the made a full recovery with no medication dosed, just a changing of tanks from one planted tank to another planted tank.
    So in my findings for the number of fish I would recommend to keeping in a tank obviously varies based on tank size, more so the foot print of the tank. When I had 30 fish on my 360 square inches of floor space, they were fine and happy with 12 square inches of floor space, but they were not happy and started to pick on one another when they only had 3.6 square inches of floor space for each fish.

    Very good point. I have a 30L (8 gallon) tank. I was told 7 CPDs would be fine. I got 4, then 3 more, but in about a week one of them got sickly, stopped swimming and slowly died. Now the remaining 6 are extremely active and look very happy. It certainly might be the surface area, as you said.
    What was strange though was with the one that died, he seemed to have carved an area for himself - he was right under my filter and none of the other fish bothered him. They left him alone.

      @TheAquariumLibrary  3 роки тому +2

      Huhh that is interesting. I think I was off with what I thought was wrong with my fish in the video after further examination. I don’t think surface area is as important as temperature of the tanks. I also think that the tank I was taking them from to their new tank had a good difference in pH. So a change in temp accompanied by a change in pH is what I think did mine in. Not necessarily the amount of surface area, though I could be mistaken. I am going to add another 15 more I think here soon and am going to check pH and temps much better this time and see if I have the same issues.

      @TheAquariumLibrary did you ever figure out what happened with those CPDs? I'm getting a group of 10 this week. I have a 5 gallon, with a katappa leaf and a small sponge filter. I have hard water so I've been adjusting with the leaf. Also adjusting the pH. They will be in the dark for the first week and have nothing in there to stress them out. Besides each other. But if they're in the dark, I would think it should help them adjust. I'm also keeping the temp at 70 for now since they don't eat after shipping.

    Beautiful tanks and fish! I am planning to start a planted 40 breeder community, with Diamond Tetras as my main feature. (Probably about 7-9 of them.) I have been considering (eventual) tank mates and am thinking about green neons, a few pygmy corydoras and/or otocinclus, and possibly a small group of CPDs. Do you think they would do well (at 78°), or would the Diamond Tetras stress them out? I’ve seen CPDs suggested a good tank makes for Diamond Tetras, but would love to hear your opinion. Thanks!

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 роки тому +1

      I don’t think the diamond tetras would stress them out. I’ve never kept diamond tetras with CPDs but my first thought is that they should be fine in a planted 40 breeder. 78 is about the upper limits that I’d want to keep the CPDs.

    Interesting topic you talked about. I had about 23 cpd’s several yrs ago and ended up giving them away along with tank mates due to some life issues that came unexpected. I just purchased 15 today and have them with a smaller school of chili rasboras’s and my shrimp. I would love to find fry in my tank.

      Oh wow I am sure that is a beautiful tank with the CPDs and chili rasboras. I’ve been looking at getting some chili rasboras actually because I think they’d go well with the CPDs.
      Yeah I was perplexed as to why they weren’t doing well as I was following all the recommendations online. And I think now the problem was the temperature and it wasn’t anything else that I mentioned in this video. Once I turned the temperature down all the problems went away.
      I also had hoped for fry in my show tank but never found any. As soon as I set up a breeding tank of just CPDs I was getting eggs daily. I have a couple videos showing how I started the method and how I changed it over time to make it better, or so I think haha. It is only a five gallon tank so not a big commitment.

      @@TheAquariumLibrary Yeah, there's a lot of plants and moss and a driftwood log. Though it's not as densely planted as some that I have, but it was enough that those two have made it. They tend to hang out next to a cabomba plant that's growing along the surface, above where the adult fish swim. One's getting big enough now that I see it even swim down among the adults sometimes. (They're the only ones though, haven't seen any other fry in the tank, though I have numerous baby dwarf shrimp). I have some more moss in there now and when it greens up I'll try seeing if I can collect eggs before they get eaten.

    This is a weird question but I have a planted 75 gallon that just has a True SAE and 2 bristlenose plecos in it. Do you think 30 CPDs will do fine in it with such a large space. If so how many do you recommend for a tank for the size since I plan on breeding them.

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 роки тому

      In my experience I have been unable to breed them in a colony where they just naturally spawn and fry naturally grow up. I have to put them into their own separate tank where I collect the eggs because they will eat their fry and eggs any chance they get.
      I don't think 30 will be bad for that size tank. I have 20 in a 27 gallon and at times I see 5-7 out and about when it isn't feeding time.

    About 5 weeks ago I put 12 CPDs in a 10 gallon QT. After 2 weeks 3 died over the course of a week. They’ve been stable and active. I’m planning on putting them in a planted 20 gal long with some neon tetras and albino corys. I was going to get 12 more. Do you think I could do that? I’d QT first for a month.

  • @richardmaccarthy101
    @richardmaccarthy101 2 роки тому +1

    This is quite interesting - so essentially they need medium sized groups, but a lot of space compared to the likes of neon tetras? That would seem to match up with their natural environment...
    Do you have any videos for nano tank stocking? I am one cycle away from a pea puffer tank, but the idea of not having a true ecosystem (e.g. species only, removing shells, etc.) is slowly creeping up on me. But then the idea of a 'cramped' 10 gallon community sneaks up on me too!

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 роки тому

      The group that I added here didn’t do well when I added them. I have since added more plants and cover for them and have added successfully another 18 no problem. In my opinion and experience with them they aren’t schoolers or shoalers. They don’t seem to particularly like being in large groups and would rather just swim around by themselves in a tank and more cover for me seemed to allow for more to be kept in the same tank.
      I do not have any stocking videos for nano tanks. I plan to make one here in the near future highlighting some new fish that I am actually on the road to go collect in Florida. As well as highlighting some of the ones I have kept in the past.
      While true ecosystems are cool I like mixing my fish from different continents. I have Australian, Asian, North American and South American species in my 27 gallon cube tank.

    HI, I am new to the hobby and just cycled a 8gallon heavily planted shallow (so long but low) tank. They recommended me some CPDs because their natural habitat was shallow and planted. I took 10 in. Beginning went fine. One died but he did not eat and separated himself from the beginning. After a week the others starte to also behave lethargic. The are just floathing in one spot, not moving around at all. feedingtime also does not excite them. Did I do wrong by buying these CPD for this thank? Maybe they are to many of them? Should I bring them back and will the stress of again moving not kill them? I ask because this morning I found a second dead one and I am afraid they will all die?

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 роки тому +2

      I don't think you have too many for that tank. 8 in there should be fine.
      The first thing I would try doing is mixing up what you are feeding them. I found that mine could be picky eaters initially and would not eat what they eat now when I first got them. I found that feeding some frozen brine shrimp mixed in with some flake food would result in getting them to eat both and eventually being able to ween them off of the brine shrimp. I had to start feeding them and walk away to allow them to feel safe enough to come out and feed.
      Additionally, I might try lowering the lights or making sure they have areas that aren't in full light. My perfectly healthy one will dart around the tank constantly but love to go hide underneath the sponge filter when I first come to the tank either to feed or to watch them.
      Also some death is to be expected when getting new fish, but your first goal should be to get them to eat something, try lots of frozen or live foods to see if that peaks their interest. Hopefully that is able to help you.

    I'll have a very large bottom surface area with densely planted bottom and roots from above and basically clear mids in an upcoming build (~40G)
    It'll be "coldwater" - just however warm the apartment gets
    I've been planning to just put some hillstream loaches and small shrimp and snails in there which I know of that they'll all reproduce on their own like that in my experience and would really want a larger school of maybe 40-80 as small as possible fish which won't mind the unheated water and can also reproduce with enough coverage
    Previous fish I tried for similar roles usually ended up not schooling properly (moving in unison) and just schoaling (just kinda bunching up) despite the numbers. Only exceptions I found were Zebra Danio and Neons.
    So when I first saw the CPD I got very excited and happy but looking around I've seen nobody keep them in larger schools online - hence how I found this video.
    Would my CPD be fine since they'll have the "Space" and plenty of it and will they actually show proper schooling, not schoaling behaviors, at least in their proper age groups?

    • @TheAquariumLibrary

      I have a group of 20 CPDs in my 30 gallon cube and I can say that they don't school at all, shoal if you are lucky. I had upwards of 40 in there and still no schooling, so I don't think this is the fish you would want if you are going for a schooling fish that can handle cold waters.
      My first thought for a coldwater schooling fish would be the white cloud mountain minnow, whatever variety you would like. I think those would be your best, tiny fish that can handle and spawn in the ambient temperature of an apartment. No other fish come to the top of my head that are less than 2 inches that fit those qualifications.
