    Great to see you back. I did something very similar to this on my 150 gallon for 3 years. I was running an FX4 with an HOB aquamaxx skimmer. No sump. Just the canister. I moved to a trigger systems sump a few months ago. As background I have NEVER done a water change on my aquarium. Not once. I know my personality. I hate changing water and I wont do it. Since I dont do water changes I have resigned myself to living with sky high nitrates. So I only do fish, no corals. The pros and cons of the canister as I see it.....
    Canister Pros;
    1) Simple - The canister was an all in one package. You can do Bio, Chemical and Mechanical all together.
    2) Cost - Its a great way for beginners to break into the hobby without spending a FORTUNE. The trigger systems sump crazy expensive
    3) Reliable - I never had any issues with leaks, overflows, etc.
    4) Hands off - I did a lot less daily tinkering with the canister. The sump I have always needs something. And I never feel comfortable leaving it unattended. When I leave town I have a webcam trained on the aquarium so I can see it from out of town.
    Canister Cons: (I know you have a sump AND canister, so maybe you have found a sweet spot!)
    1) The monthly cleaning task. You do have to pull it out and clean it every month. Kind of a pain.
    2) I did have to live with high nitrates. I was never able to get them down. Dosing, biopellets, etc. never worked for me. If you dont do corals though, its not an issue.
    3) Not as flexible. You cant change media on the fly. A canister only system is a bit limiting . You can also run a lot of options in the sump you cant in a canister (refugium, protein skimmers, etc.)
    The above is just my experience for the newbies.

      Thanks for the great comment. I thought about all of this. I'm really picky when it comes to sumps and I'll probably design my own when I feel like emptying the tank to put one under.

    Just say add to my other comment the FX six worked so good on my 220 that I added one to my 55 gallon in the bedroom the same way the same media set up same filter set up and I only change the filters on it about once a month.

    Hey STEVE I have been watching you for a while. So I have a 220 gallon tank with a 36 gallon shop. It has to filter socks. I watched a video from a fellow on UA-cam and he packed a FX sixfor bio media balls. I have a lot of Live rock in my tank but I wanted some more room for bacteria to grow. So I only use the filters on the bottom rack where the water first comes into the FX six and then on the very top center rack I use black blue and white filters. The small round filters Which bar the standard black egg crate style filter and the blue is medium and the white is fine. The rest of the outside of the racks and the center of the racks I feel with bio media balls. Don't use four out of six of the outside filters. I think they would cause a lot of nitrate problems.. I use this FX six along with my regular salt and I change the filters and wash the media out and the racks off with water from the tank so I don't kill my bacteria and I have seen a great difference in my tank. You said you weren't going to use the media that comes with the FX six and I think you're making a big mistake but that's your choice. I ran my return and my intake right from the back of the tank just like they show you in the directions and I'm telling you brother it does an awesome job. Even with only two of the outside filters on the bottom and the three center filters it does a great job filtering and it is added so much room for more bacteria to grow. I only change my filters in the epic six every three weeks. If you use all those filters you're going to have to change it about every two weeks or you're gonna deal with a lot of nitrate problems. I just figured I would give you a little help because I went through my period a trial and error of myself.. More bio balls more room for bacteria to grow less nitrate and a lot healthier fish and corals.

      Thanks for the awesome comment. I did wind up setting it up like you did and T-d off both overflows into my sump. Interesting on using only 4 of 6 big white filters.
