I am running a 40 gallons salt water tank for over 5 years with a canister filter only, with no issues whatsoever. As you mention as long as you keep up with your maintenance you would be totally okay!! Great video and I am glad to hear that I am not the only one running a saltwater tank with a canister filter.
I have been running my 75 gallon tank with a FX4 for quite some time and with regular cleaning the nitrates stay at or near zero and water is crystal clear. I probably tripled the amount of bio-media from what it came with, added media to the void in the bottom of the canister to help catch large particles where the water comes in, and added a fine filter right before the carbon pad. At 700 gph it turns the water over fast and is very quiet. No issues so far with keeping soft and LPS corals. Thanks for the video.
Yeah you get those sad snobby people in lots of hobbies, with aquariums it's salt/reef people , with cars it's BMW/audi people, with phones it's apple people and with games it's PC people. You get them everywhere 🙄

There is many ways to run a successful marine aquarium, even just flow and live rock :) I prefer sump to hide all equipment and it’s safer for leaks from skimmers etc, but I totally agree with your video

Kudos to you! I ran a salt tank for close to 20 yrs with an under gravel filter, 2 power heads & a canister. I had the most crystal clear water ever with great levels. Went to a bigger tank with sump & nothing but problems. Going back to canisters. 😁 Thought of the same combo as you, one just bio, one just mech. & stay on the cleanings. 👍🏼 What brand is that big one?
I’m running a canister on my 75 gallon reef, 2 things, they are absolutely a nitrate factory if you don’t clean it out every week, for this...I would suggest the use of a HOB filter over the canister filter, because the HOB is just so much easier to clean, both will work, both will produce nice tanks, just a canister filter is probably the most high maintenance filter you can choose, me personally, I’m switching to a sump, more stable, more water volume, easy to take out dirty socks and add new, refugium, etc etc etc. but I’m very glad someone actually made a video making all this clear, so to sum it up, if you already own the canister filter, use it, if not, save money and aggravation and buy a nice HOB unit.
These are the same pre filters I use on my tanks.so easy to maintain with out having to clean out my main filter..and a very good price to..I got this idea of Richard (pond guru) some time back.and have never looked back 👍🏻

How did this work out for you ? I’m looking to set up a little 100 litre Nano in the office but don’t really want the noise of a sump. I have a much larger sumped reef in the house. I like the idea of the pre filter but wonder if I could just use the APS prefilter and maybe a more budget friendly canister ? Thought process is if I can I could then fund a cheato reactor on the outlet before returning to the tank. With a glass flow and return pipe could look pretty smart.
Thinking of doing the exact same thing. However not keen on spending too much on external filters. All pond solution do a 2000l/h external filter with uv light for around 85 quid. Reckon that will be okay alongside this booster filter???

I understand that you want to put as much biological media to get more surface for the bacterias. Tho arent the rocks in the tank enough? Do the bacterias help diminish nitrates?

I was in freshwater for 10+ years, canisters aren't the pinnacle of filtration in freshwater systems, Sump are.
Hi I’m loving this vid and need advice. I currently have a tank that’s a little over 100L. Should I over size the canister filter?as in same size as yours or go for one size smaller? I already have a hang on oversized skimmer and just have a hang on filter which will be replaced if I go through with this
You can never have "too much" filtration. What ever the budget an space allows.... just go for it.

Really enjoyed your video 👍 about 30 yrs ago I use to keep marine fish with nothing more than under gravel filtration, never had any problems whatsoever, I retired a few years ago and just went and bought a 300ltr tank and cabinet having no idea how much the hobby had changed, boy was I in for a shock, don’t have room for a sump etc. So have a Fluval 406 canister filter, I do manage to keep some soft corals as well as fish, but I do struggle to keep nitrates down, I use course medium and fine sponges in the bottom tray, Rowaphos and filter floss in the 2nd tray, de*nitrate in the 3rd tray and activated carbon filter floss in the top tray, my water is crystal clear. But the dam nitrates drive me nuts. Any suggestions? Ps, no room for a booster either 😩
Thanks for watching 👍 how much and how often are you feeding? There are liquid nitrate removers available. What is it stocked with? Are you using RO water? Irrelevant of the answers to all these questions I would suggest a second canister or a bigger canister. I know the box says upto 400ltr but I think its all marketing if you get me?

I had a local fish store owner who was a hobbyist at heart along with his mother and sister. They call had amazing reef tank and believe it or not they all used hang on back filters, and used deep sand beds. He never promoted the need for a sump or skimmer.
Looks good, i whant to, setup reef tank , i have UV sterilizer, 3 canister filters 1 x FX6, 2 x Fluval G. My tank 575 l , MITRAS LX7 x 2. Do i need skimer small one or macro algae refugium ?:)
You can have a chaeto refugium with a canister filter. I'm going to be doing just that. I am going to be using the BioMaster 600 or 850 going into a UV, and then splitting with a control valve with one side going back in the tank and the other going into a chaeto reactor, then back into the tank. So I will have the canister filter, UV, and algae reactor going on... that should keep the water fairly clean.
My canister came with a uv light is that a good thing?
Hi, I've been running a marine reef tank for years in a 3ft x 12 x 15, and yes, I've had other hobbyists saying that I'd be better with a sump. Thanks for the video it was very informative. I'll invest in some nitrate removing medium for my filter as I do have problems keeping my nitrate levels down.
hey man thanks for the video - I have a fluval roma 240 with a fluval fx4 running as marine, everything has been working fine so far. Good to see your video as it made me relax a bit that I havnt done absolutely everything wrong. Im thinking about adding one of these filter boosters just to make cleaning a bit easier but im worried it will restrict flow to the FX4 and cause problems for the pump. Any idea if thats true? Thanks
I'm using a huge canister filter on a new 75 gallon reef myself and see no problem, assuming that (as you said) the mechanical filter media gets changed regularly to limit production of nitrates. Mine currently has 4 trays, 2 of which are holding 10 boxes of biomedia and the others are using filter floss, and in the near future once there is reason for it I'll be adding a box or two of Seachem De-Nitrate.
I did not realise this argument existed. I kept a marine system 30 years ago using a canister filter. These days I do prefer a sump for ease of maintenance and flexibility. That canister filter and equipment is not cheap mind you, something to bear in mind.
I fully agree. Most people will say that you have to have a sump on your tank but yet they run there quarantine tank via a canister ????
Hi Mate, im looking at swopping my tropical tank to saltwater, I'm not new to the hobby but to saltwater i am, I have a ehiem 3 filter and just order the mini-filter you have ordered to try your way, as number one I don't have room for a sump, also how is it going at the min and do you need a protein skimmer as well?
How big is your tank?
A skimmer isn't "essential" if you do your maintenance but will always benefit you if you have it. Theres no such thing as too much filtration. I have just bought a HOB protein skimmer. So I will be doing a video on it.

Great video. I have been out of the hobby for years. Lol looks like alot has changed since then.
But when I was doing it after trying many things I settled on an undergravel filter that feed a canister filter. That worked great for me and had minimal tank clutter.
I see the great advantage of sump tanks of even removing the heater from the tank also. But honestly I only had 2 stands that could have worked with. Two of my hex tanks sat on the as end tables, a third tank was on my 6' dresser top and my last tank a 5' tall clock sat in the corner of the dining room. None of those 4 had a place for a sump. They all ran fine with canisters. Although the clock required an oversized one due to the 5' height. As it was narrow it didn't have great volume.
Pre-filter wasn't really a thing back then, wish it had been. I had the idea of chaining several undersink filters together to separate the different stages but life kept me busy I never got to it, then the kids came. Lol got alot more busy. Lol

U can use any filter on any type of tank a canisters fine on salt water

All those old school rules that snobs argue with are all out of date. I’m surprised it was even a problem for you. Most of them have gone the way of the dodo bird 🦤. I remember when I started back in 2013, they were still around despite the amount of technology being put out making nanos & canisters viable options for saltwater. The resin and biological autotrophic filter technology has advanced enough to make saltwater work in any tank & I think with the amount of youtubers that have proved them wrong was enough to make most of them disappear. Many people use canisters, hob, internal, integrated. It’s really all about biological load.

The reason I did this video is when I purchased the canister I was asked by the LFS sales guy what I was using it in, when I told him it was for saltwater he winced like I just punched him in stomach. He proceeded to tell me that it would become a nitrate factory and a sump is needed blah blah blah.... now I'm in high end sales myself so I know every sales technique in the book, this wasn't a sales tactic this was his genuine belief.
If this is still the attitude of LFS' what chance do new hobbyists have before they spend 5 grand on a system??
I always say I'm just a hobbyists, I don't know everything, and what works for me may not work for you. But hopefully if newbies watch this they will have a little bit more knowledge before making a decision.

This is exactly how I’ve set up my Roma 200 freshwater tank. Best decision I ever made with the tank adding that booster filter before the main canister. Free another tray up for biohome media.
The tank has never looked so good in my opinion. It’s great to hear a salt water can be set up like this also. I’m just learning the ropes with salt water

Great video. I ran a 200 litre saltwater tank with a canister filter successfully for more than several years. You could run a chaeto reactor in-line or by using a dedicated pump if you wanted. Additionally if you pre drilled the tank you would not require any overhanging pipe work. The only reason I took the tank down was because I moved.
How often do you clean your canister?
They is no risk of nitrate with so much biomedia?the prefilter ok will remove some waste but the end product of biomedia is nitrate. Isn't it?
Not if the bio media is made to support denitrifying bacteria. What your thinking of is the old type of bio media. Either way, you would still need nitrifying bacteria wether you like it or not which must be followed up with water changes. You don’t get nitrate because you have surface for autotrophic bacteria, you get nitrate because the waste in your aquarium needed to be converted by those bacteria. Other wise, what you would have is a risk of phosphates. This is what water changes and maintenance are for. In other words, if the nitrifying bacteria didn’t convert that waste into nitrate, what you would have then is just phosphate which is much more deadlier.
In regards to saltwater before the advent of resins and denitrifying bio media, hobbyists and biologists would use rocks because it was the only thing that could support denitrifying bacteria. The bio media of the time did not & as a result would just produce nitrate which needed to be taken out through water changes. That’s fine for fresh water, but if you don’t have a denitrifying element in your filtration that’s water changes and maintenance would get very expensive.

Good advice. I use a canister filter on a tank with a large Peacock Mantis shrimp who likes his grub. Works very well, I also use a hang on skimmer.

Been keeping saltwater fish and coral nearly 3 years now , also got the 1.2 filter booster .I think the black sponge in it is the fine one according to the box. I just put a bit of floss on top of it.
The 407 is full of bio home marine on mine,great stuff.
Thanks for watching, I've actually changed the foams now to let more flow through. Course and x2 medium + small bag of chemi blue. Then 30ppi on the prefilter. But before all this I've now added a uv filter (video to come). So it goes UV / prefilter canister / oase canister. Had major dino/cyano/algea growth.
Well said! I am getting back into marine as well (have a sumped system sitting empty until I make changes to the house but planning a little 20 gallon with hang on the back kit to keep me entertained for now) there seems to have been some fit and forget cannister filter owners that spread a worry that this always happens, it's like leaving an internal power filter to run for weeks without cleaning it in a freshwater tank, got to clean your filters! :)
I think some people are looking for maintenance free but they are in the wrong hobby if that's what they're looking for. Thanks for watching

I have also started my saltwater tank with a canister filter, I'm using seachem matrix and purigen and the bio balls and activated charcoal...
any suggestions regarding which one to keep at bottom and which should i put at the top ?
I'm not a fan if seachem matrix, I think its just pumice stone?? But I'd go seachem, bio balls, purigen and carbon last. Always mechanical then biological then chemical.

I went with sponge at the bottom to catch debris, the the carbon and the seachem matrix, then the bioballs and the then cilinders with polishing pads on the top 3 stages of my marineland magniflow c360

Hi there you inspired me, I have just bought the 350 to do my 1st reef setup 300l also bought the pre filter booster. I have seen a video on modifying the tube with more holes to increase flow from the removable filter... do you think this is worth doing?

Not snobbery. You can do it with canisters, of course you can - but its two to three times the work.
I had a reef tank with a canister filter for 8 years. It was hard work, there was so much detritus in the bio balls and filter pads, and I didn’t want to kill off the bacteria by rinsing in new salt water - so I rinsed in 50% old water and 50% new salt water. And strained the bio balls 20 at a time.
I think it was 30-40 minutes each time to thoroughly clear out each of the 2 Eheims. Also did wet the floor a lot everytime disconnecting them.
Nowadays I have a sump and it takes me 2 minutes after a water change to rinse out the filter sock, or just 1 minute to put in a new filter sock.
And unless you clean out the filter canister every week, like you can do with a filter sock, there is no way a canister will ever be as efficient as a sump in limiting nitrate buildup.
Having said all that, I can see why people use canisters for reef tanks. I did for 8 years.
You might only have a small apartment and can only fit in a small aquarium. Or you might only have room for a canister and have to have a UV. Because most Sumps with a UV - have 2 pumps.
Or you were brought up with canisters and just prefer them.
One of the most beautiful reef setups I ever saw live was setup in the 1990s and had an undergravel filter and a giant refugium with seaweed on the side, admittedly that half of the tank didn’t look as good.
So no one is judging or being snobs. But there is no doubting that sumps are the easier method.

your video is worth nothing a long as you do not show real results in your tank. I mean, how can we know if you did not have any leak of nitrates and so on. Just setting up a canister and saying it works is kinda useless.
