I have 2 FX6s, and I still watched this whole vid. You easily have the best aquarium channel on UA-cam. Keep up the good work, Kaveman 💪
That’s awesome! Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 😁
What size tank tank do you have and what kind of substrate. I have 2 fx6 also. I have gravel right now but I’m thinking of changing over to sand
@@CFish-N-Cars I have a 125 with sand substrate.
Bro, I bought the FX four and flooded my whole house bro now I just picked up the FX6 I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
@@seeyouatthetop83how do you keep the sand from getting into ur filter ?
I swear you have the best fish channel. I have just watched like six videos on this topic from other youtubers, and they just don’t know how to explain things well, half the time I end up just shutting their videos off a minute in cuz I can’t stand the sound of their voices, I feel like they were all just frustrating me and you just made the whole set up process so easy just by watching your video. I’ve actually been watching you for a few months now and you’ve probably helped me fix about 90% of my aquarium problems, I feel like I don’t need to even go to any other UA-cam channel anymore because you have all the information I need, thank you so much for all your informative videos!!
Thank you for this amazing feedback! So glad to hear you've been enjoying the channel and finding it helpful! Appreciate the support! 😊💪
@@nylagoddess5633 totally agree!! If I have a questions I always check his videos first. He just explains things and shows things the best!!!
I am currently following everything you do with the Fx6, wave maker and water flow and it works great, thanks for a excellent channel and making everything seem simple for everyone!!!!
I can not say enough about your channel. Thank you so much for your educational videos, they're always super informative and to the point. I've been watching for the past two years and attribute the success of my aquirum to YOU !!! 2 years of pure enjoyment of my 75-gallon ciclid tank. Thanks again for such great content on the hobby.
Wow, thank you for that positive feedback! And thanks for sticking with me since the beginning. Appreciate you OG's the most! 😁💪
Thank you for keeping it simple and not overcomplicating the heck out of it. Even more importantly, thank you for being human and remembering who you're making the vids for and not condescending. You definitely earned a follower or subscriber or whatever the heck it's called- I'm a disabled old dude. I bought the Fluval FX6 for my terrapin tank and so far it's working wonderful, and it only took a little longer for me to set it up because I was watching the video at the same time. Again, thank you for the extremely helpful vid.
I'm glad I found this tutorial. I struggle every time I clean the filters. I have dyslexia and I always put the hoses on backwards. You described the hose placement so that I understood how the filter works. Your the best. Beautiful tanks, keep up the good work. 😂
Glad to hear the video was helpful for you! 😊💪
I take blue painter's tape and I Mark which one is in and which one is out. I also Mark which order they need to be done in. Step 1, step2 etc..
Thank you Kev! Just added an additional FX6 and you got me looking right! This channel is a wealth of knowledge! I appreciate it!
My pleasure bro! Glad you're finding the channel helpful! 😊
Just brought a FX6 .
Now I feel very common about putting it together.
Thank you so very much for a great video.
It is very appreciated.
Great video. I am in the process of redoing my tank and was on the fence about a canister filter. You sold me. It was explained so well, so glad a friend introduced me to your page. I can’t wait to go through the rest of your video collection to improve my fish keeping knowledge. Thank you again !!!

This couldn't have dropped at a better time!! Setting up 2 fx6's this weekend. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
My pleasure! I know there were many Black Friday fx6 purchases made, myself included lol
@KaveMan Aquatics Exactly!! New tank as well. I have a ton of substrate to rinse first. Do you reccomend only setting up one of the fx6's until the tank clears up from set up so I don't have to wash them both out?
Nope! Hook up and have them both running to get as much bacteria growing on your media as fast as possible. After your tank clears up just replace the white pad with a fresh one and you’ll be good to go!
FOUND YOUR CHANNEL. u rock i had many tanks in past lost all due to hurricane 5-6 yrs ago started new tank never thought of new tank cycle i let it cycle for 2 week put some barchardi in . 1 week later only 1 fist left( ammonia). steadily watching your videos. thx for all your effort putting videos out. new subscriber
Thank you! Glad you didn’t give up and found your way back to the hobby 😊
Thank you so much for thoroughly explaining and not skipping ANY steps. it’s so hard to find info for people new to aquariums. It’s like everyone assumes it’s all basic knowledge and it’s really not, so thanks for all these videos and keeping the “dumb” beginners like me in mind 😂
My pleasure, I try my best to always keep the beginner in mind and make videos everyone can understand. 😁
Another great informational video Kev. Just bought an fx6 an you totally just showed the best set up info to help me out!
Best step by step EVER! Kev never skips a beat!

I absolutely love your videos, my guy. I recently upgraded from a 40-gallon to a 120-gallon tank for my childs and went with 2 hob 110 top fin pro series filters and 2 sponge filters. Now, I've made the change to 2 fx4 canister filters and wasn't sure about the best way to set it up. After watching this video, im good to go.
Thank you bro! Im glad this video helped you out. You're going to love what those FX4's can do! 😊💪
You are so encouraging every single time I watch any of your videos
Thank you my bro! 😊💪
Really helpfull video, installed mine today and did it exactly the same way.
What a great product and what a wonderful channel 👌🏼
Great video! Thank you for showing the entire process.
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it! 😁
Thank you Mr. Kev for this interesting and informative video! Someday when I'm more confident to upgrade to a bigger tank..I'll have this video to refer to...because honestly...I was lost after you set up cannister! I would have strangled myself with that hose! 🤣 your the best! You explain step by step for beginners like me! 😊❤❤❤
🤣🤣 That hose did kick my butt for a second lol Glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
Lol! 😊❤❤
Thanks kev! Just picked up my first fx6! Can’t wait to see what the water looks like in the morning !
Very informative video Kaveman, I too run two FX6 canisters on my monster S.American cichlids tank to keep the water clean and clear. I have modified the intakes with pre-filter sponges and the returns with a 90° elbow so it’s not longer dual outlets, gives better flow with the directions they’re pointing. If I never had the FX6 I would say this is probably the best video I’ve seen for set up👍👍👍
Thank you bro, I’m not a big fan of the pre-sponge, but I have been considering modifying the output. I do like the stronger, 1 directional output. Glad you enjoyed the video! 😊💪
hey scott! i have s. americans too. what ones you have???

Big fan of your channel Kev. I was fed up with Sunsun canister filters until now because they leaked all the time. Now I will try fluval as everyone say it’s great filter and branded. Will follow your instructions from the video❤

Only way to go. Great explanation. 👍🏼

In case that you dont need that much current in your tank because you have goldfish , you just change the output for another intake and you have one filter normal and another more slow and the fish do not suffer the water speed., you are the best, thanks.
Great video, great channel. Appreciate all the info.
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
I love your video.. I am actually a Fluval agent. Very well explained for someone who has never owned one.
I myself have one and love it. ❤️
Thank you bro, I have reached out to Fluval a few times about sponsorship and promotion, but they must be busy over there 🤣 Put in a good word for me if you can 😊💪

Great vids ! I use the included black Fluval pad in the very top of my FX6 and under it I use a 20ppi foam pad I cut to fit the inside of the tray.
Middle and bottom trays get old seeded media.
Any thoughts on when Fluval will come out with a FX7? They need to go with a variable speed DC motor with the ability to set up schedules throughout the day, so you can reduce output volume at night and ramp it back up during day.
Christmas is around the corner. An FX6 might be under the tree! Thank you for the walkthrough Kev!
My pleasure! Glad you found it helpful! 😊
Love fluval filters. I have hang on backs on my small tanks and a 207 on my 40gal. Id love to have a big tank one day with these fx filters
@KaveMan Aquatics, I am really impressed with you, as you are very real and even know exactly the reasons. I am surprised, how you might know exactly the conditions that could have triggered issues at my tank. This is only possible because you are passionate extremely knowledgeable as you dearly care for your fish. I would not spend time to write comment, but you saved the life of my one fish. Wish I had come across your videos little earlier and could have saved life of my another fish, that sadly expired.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your fish but unfortunately its the nature of this wonderful hobby. As long as you're willing to keep learning you'll be able to take care of your fish better as your knowledge grows. Thank you for the positive feedback! I'm glad you're finding the channel helpful 😊
I'm just starting my own aquarium and your videos are definitely the most helpful in getting me setup correctly with clear water! I do have a question though. I'm looking to house a betta and some smaller fish like neon tetras.. which should I add first to the tank? I've seen nothing about an order specifically but thought there must be lol
Most knowledgeable channel on UA-cam for anything aquatic.

So I am new to this filter. If this is a first time install for me do I need additional chem media for the top tray?
Hi If repashay supergold gel is past its best before date will u still feed it?Is it still good and safe for fancy goldfish
I still have the potscrubs in my fx6 from thr other setup. Would I be able to change it fully to this setup and just add purigen in the top tray?
Hey Kev...my name is Kevin, and I am your new subscriber from South Africa. I owned a 4ft Malawi tank a few years back, and at first it was all going well, I had about +-25 Malawi's ( peacocks and mbuna's) oh and 2 frontosas ( my most favorite). They were around 3 to 5 cm. My frontosas were bigger though. Unfortunately, they all gradually died, so I did not take too well to it, and that led me to sell the entire setup. I have been watching your videos for almost 2 weeks now, and I have realized where I went wrong. I must say all your videos are by far the best I've seen, easy to understand, and most inspiring no disrespect to the other aquatic channels, but your videos stand out bro, because anyone can see just how passionate you are about this and most of all your honesty and transparency, you have inspired me to give this another try, with your videos I am confident that I will succeed. I did enjoy this video. However, I prefer sump filtration over the cannister.I would highly recommend your channel to others, fun to watch, and thank you very, very much Kev... God bless you and keep those videos coming, bro.
Really great video. Makes me want to get set up with a bigger aquarium. Can I ask though, will the intake not be able to take in as much water behind the background?
Not at all, the background isn’t sealed. The water is full to the top back there just as it is in the front 😊
Hey Kev, thank you for another helpful video. I set up my FX6 about 2 weeks ago and I used Fluval Biomax and carbon in the filter trays. I see everybody is talking about Seachem Matrix but I didn’t know about that product at the time. Do you recommend I make the switch, or am I good with what I have? I also am running a sump and the tank is 200 gallons. Thanks man! Keep up the great work, I love your content.
You don’t have to switch. The bio-max is also going to get the job done as far as keeping your tank cycled and providing enough surface area for beneficial bacteria growth. What I can say is that Matrix can grow anaerobic bacteria which will help in reducing nitrates, never tested if bio-max can do the same. But if you keep up with scheduled water changes you don’t NEED to have anaerobic bacteria. 😊
@@KaveManAquatics thank you very much I really appreciate the response! Keep making great content your channel has really helped me out along with many others!
Hey man, love the channel and videos! I am running a 90 gallon "nano" tank with an FX6. It's been established for 3/4 years. It's been about a year or more since I have replaced anything in, or cleaned the filter. I want to replace as much as I can in there and was wondering how much and what I should actually replace at 1 time and then when should i do the rest? I typically get away with going this long between cleanings and replacing things because all the fish are so small. I just wanted some advice on how much is too much to replace all at once. Thanks!
I just joined 🎉 . I've just purchased a 75 gallon aquarium primarily for angelfish. I'm trying to figure out what filtration to purchase that is not too much flow for angelfish. I asked someone and they suggested Eheim filtration. I watch alot of your videos and would like your perspective. I see this canister has alot of good reviews. Appreciate all your help!! Blessings!
Eheim is a well known brand but I prefer Seachem or Fluval. If you’d like to go with an HOB the Seachem Tidal is the best. If you want to go canister I suggest the Fluval 407. Either one will work great for your tank with Angels 😁
Btw, Thanks for joining the membership. I appreciate your support! 😊💪
Awesome instructional, thanks. Q: I have a 55 gal tank and a 1000 gph pump (I know overkill, but I can't return it) connected to a DIY canister filter. I want to reduce the flow to the tank. What is the best way to do this? Should I double the discharge?
Add a valve to your DIY canister so you can close it a bit and reduce the output flow to your tank.
Hey kaveman.. i have a quastion i have a see tru tank.
But i think that it is stressing my fish Do you have any experience with this or is it possible?
IDK brother man, I’m probably gonna have to try your method. I just got back in the game about 2 years ago after a 10 year hiatus from the hobby. Back then the FX 6’s we’re just coming out. When I started my aquariums up again went with an eheim 2262 and an FX 6. And so far the FX 6 has left much to be desired. But I’m gonna try to hang with it. So my next maintenance day, gonna try your method.
Cool bro, hope to hear an update from you on how it goes! 💪
I'm just about to set my new 135gal tank up. I'm going to run my seeded 407 with the media setup from your videos, but I'm going to run a fx6 too. How would you recommend running these filters media wise? One for polishing only? Or both just how you set the 407 and fx6 up? It's going to be a south american cichlid tank with bigger fish, an Oscar, Jack dempsey etc
Thanks !
In a fluval 207 what can I use instead of the charcoal bags?
I recently replaced the bio media with the seachem matrix.
Hey Kevin this is unrelated to the video but I wanted to comment on the most recent video. So I set up a new 55 gallon tank 2 days ago and have been using Prime and Stability, when I tested my water today it showed zero ammonia zero nitrite and about 30 Ppm Nitrate. so does that mean my tank is already cycled?? I did add a decoration rock from and already cycled tank if that information is important. Thanks for all the helpful videos!
Recently bought a second hand tank and one of these came with it. Realised after trying a these steps that my pump is crap. It's leaking and won't pump water at all. Really don't like this filter, but your video was great! Finding your channel made it worh it after all... 😄
Sorry to hear that, you must have a lemon. I highly suggest you try a new one because these filters are at the top of the game. I have 4 and have never had a problem. Dont let 1 bad experience keep you from this power house of a filter 😊💪
@@KaveManAquatics Thanks for the reply man! Have you had any of eheims counterparts to this? If so, you still prefer these?
I'm currently setting up a 1000l (264 gallon) tank (knowing myself, pretty fully stocked with critters..). Guessing one fx6 (or similar) would be on the low side for a tank like that? Would 2 be enough you think, or should I even go with 3? Thanks in advance!
Hey, thanks for your videos, happy to see a fellow Dominican on this platform. So my question is, I have a 75 gallon, prepping for peacocks. I have 2 FX4! I was told by my reputable LFS that just one fx4 would suffice for this project. I got 2. Is this enough?
Hey Kev great video!! Whats the name of of the plant🎉 that you have in the top of the tank?? I’m going to do that..
POTHOS…search for “kaveman plants” for a great video of the install 😁
Another great video. How would you recommend positioning the inlet and output if running a single fx6 on a 75 gallon?
I’d have them both on same side. With output pushing water to other side.
@@KaveManAquatics thank you bro!
Hi Kev,
Greetings from Singapore!
Whats your opinion on placing fluval ammonia and nitrite remover pads in fx6? Will it starve the beneficial bacteria thats already established?
My dog *Trey* was very interested in this video 😆.. Man I don't need this FX6, but I want it so badly 😂
🤣🤣 Just convince yourself that you most likely WILL need it in the future anyway. Thats what I do 🤣🤣
Great vid as always...so how good does the intake work being hidden behind the wall??
It works great when complimented with a wavemaker. My 150 that doesnt have a wavemaker needed to get creative with the outputs...that video coming soon 😊
Hey couple of quick question broski!
So I have the FX5, and I went ahead and did the pot scrubber bio media. So I have the two bottom trays filled with those. What’s the difference (if any) between the matrix and those?
Also, on my top tray I have two filter discs. I have the blue one and below that the white polishing pad. Do you know if there’s a difference between the two or if one is better than the other? Kinda wondering now if I’m hindering the flow of the water too much seeing that you only use the one. I did find it kinda odd because I’m pretty sure they both say “polishing” on the box. Kinda wondering with the way I have it is a bit redundant.
Hey I’m new to taking care of fish and I’ve noticed that my fish keeps going to the surface even after I’ve feed it so I watched your videos and you recommend a wave maker is there a wave maker you or anyone recommend for 5 gallon tanks
Hey kave do you have a video on how to upgrade your FX 4
Cool video !! my fx6 after setting it up primes starts turns off like normal comes back on but ejects water in bursts ? Is this still it priming itself and should leave it till it’s a constant outflow
I think I understand the question...watch this - ua-cam.com/users/shorts_mgs5PlrqjE
@kaveman where’d you get the 3d background from for you 210?
Hi Sr. I just found your channel and it is amazing the knowledge that you have!!. I have one question you always mention about you having a overstocked 125 gal. How many fishes do you have in that tank? I just want to compare my 125 gal with yours and all the equipment that you have. You know apples with apples.
Well that will be tough because I dont have a 125 lol My African Tank is a 210G with about 50-60 fish. But here's a great video for you - ua-cam.com/video/q9OoEfYBB6s/v-deo.html
hey kev, How do you deal with sand in your fx6. Will this cause any problems?
I like the way you explain everything and I learned a lot watching your videos. I have a question, I saw that you use prime seachem, I just started using it in my aquarium, but the aroma is too strong, is that normal or is there something wrong because it is very strong? thanks hope you can help me
The funky smell is completely normal. After dosing your tank it will dissipate after a while 😊
Thanks 😊
Hello Kavman 👋🏾 I have a quick question. I placed my chemical media in the bottom basket. I heard you say I will lose my beneficial bacteria if I remove them. So the question is should I just keep those chemical media in there and just add new chemical media to the top basket?
Great video going to setup my first fx6 on 125. I plan to later add another but for now my question is when setting up first do you put outflow in the corner with intake or middle of tank?
It will work fine either way. Since you plan to add another keep it in the corner for now and put second in the middle. Important thing is that both outputs are pushing water across the top in same direction. Here's what I mean - ua-cam.com/video/GowcPzNxCDo/v-deo.html
Thanks for everything you share. @KaveManAquatics
so i have an aquaclear 110 , 2 of them. when i drain the tank, the filters water empties, which means the bio media is exposed to air. until the tank fills back up. so you're saying im killing BB in my filters when water changing ?
Do you have your heater and all your hoses for the filters behind the 3d print so you don't see it? Really clean setup
Hey man, if u use sachem prime incase of an ammonia emergency do u have to do the whole seachem stability again? (new in the aquarium)
It’s a good idea to also add stability to help grow more bacteria to handle the spike. But only 1 or 2 doses…not anymore than that.
hi kave after watching your video i have just ordered one my tank. just wondering don't i have to use carbon in this filter?
Carbon is helpful but not necessary. Watch this - ua-cam.com/video/YKWEQGjS1DY/v-deo.html
Hi Kaveman 😊 I need help with my tank. I have 9 fancy goldfish, quite large ones, and the tank is overstocked. The tank is 105 liters large. I have a n external 150 liter external filter. Until I get my larger tank, would it help to upgrade my filter to a 350 liter external one?
how tall and how wide is this canister. need to know if it can fit in my cabinet

Do you have a slab concrete floor or do you have bracing under the wood floor for your tanks in your living room
They’re on a concrete slab 😁
Hello Kev,
Hope you are doing great.
My goldfishes are losing scales and I would like to know the reason please. Recently, I changed their food to Saki Hikari Color Enhancing and Saki Hikari Balance food. Is that the reason? or I mixed up two different types of water to get the PH to 7, is that the reason? Or is there any other reason. I see that the fishes were doing great and now all of them losing scales.
Please reply and if possible kindly make a video on this topic
Hai brother, im from malaysia and I do watch ur videos, it's very knowledgeable and helpful for my hobby. Thank you for that 🙏 . Can you please explain me the pros and cons of the lava rock and crush coral to use as bio media?
I use 2 FX6s on my 120g cichlid tank. Great vid. Just a little note Kev. The Stability should be added after the Prime so there is no interaction with untreated water. Your tanks are rockin! Question, why do you run your intake hose halfway into the tank?
Chlorine doesn’t kill bacteria instantly. I sometimes begin adding tap water to the tank and then add the prime. Either way has shown to work fine without any issues 😊
