Hi Hannah! That dye is Red 27- it's colorless in oil-based products but turns bright pink when exposed to moisture. Just look for it in the ingredients to know if you're looking at a color-changing, staining formula!

Dear Hannah, In (food and cosmetic) chemistry lingo, a "dye" is the equivalent of what we could call a "pigment". Whether or not something "dyes" the skin is dependent on whether the pigment penetrates the epidermis. Loved the video. ❤
Saw the title of this video and thought - ah Hannah is going to talk sense into all of us to avoid the spend-trap of the upcoming Sephora sale. *feeling immediate guilt and shame as I couldn't even wait for the sale event but spent $$$ at Sephora yesterday to deal with work stress and enjoy a hot moment by myself as a mom of two* And then watching and having such relief that this is just a scattered mom trying to do her best making a video for a scattered mom trying to do her best. I think it depends on your skin and what contour you are using. I use creams and only go about a couple shades darker, making sure it actually has a gray tone, for my skin. Much more shadow and much less dirt.

My personal fave is the gray contour shade of elf putty, lightly applied with a soft foundation buffing brush. It has just the right amount of translucence. Anything else looks very noticeable on me.
I love it so much when you spin out into tangents on the English language or pronunciation etc. It makes me feel like I've found a kindred spirit whose thought process works like mine does.
I have a few of the Bobbi Brown lip tints and I have never noticed that they stain my lips. I find them more moisturizing than the Dior ones and actually prefer the colors as well!
I'd love to hear how the Gucci gloss compares to the About-Face Vinyl Effect eye gloss. The photos make it look so dramatic and it's a lot cheaper than the Gucci.

My Mom is a full on natural Brand New Copper Penny Red Head or was till she turned completely white people with natural Red hair do not turn grey , the hair just simply loses pigment so it goes a beautiful pure white like snow . Anyway my hair has massive natural red highlights in it and Bronzers 90% of the time look orange on me even when it claims to be neutral or cool toned , I don’t look good in those really cool toned Bronzers but I also do not look good in regular Bronzers because so many lean red/orange. I need a true neutral Bronzer that’s not overly cool toned or red/orange, it’s extremely difficult to find a Bronzer in my price range ( definitely not luxury) and preferably mid range at most I know it’s first World problems but I’d like to find something that works for my skin tone .
Believe it or not, I’m a medium/tan and I feel your pain. I am a cool olive so everything looks garish because it is not the color I turn when sunned. I have the hardest time finding appropriate shades on almost anything. I go for ones that have a hefty dose of gray, almost more contour. Might I suggest looking at eyeshadows? I have found some work much better and there is more shade range.
Actually no i have not tried that it sounds like great idea , but would the shadow not be to pigmented and not blend out properly? Let me know what Brands you have used like this , maybe I have the same palettes and could try it out .
I feel like you would love the Girlactik Jello gloss balms. They are so comfortable on the lips with a hint of color or clear depending on which one you choose. They come in a chapstick type tube but feel very luxurious and have a nice glossy shine. You might also like the Romand Glasting melting balms, the new nude line has a few barely there colors but are moisturizing.
Have you considered propping up your book on the side table behind you, or elsewhere in the background? I recall you mentioning you forget to promote yourself and your book, that would be an easy and subtle way to include it in each video :) Also, luxury balm side note, Gucci makes a tinted lip balm that I quite enjoy. It’s the same scent/packaging as their lipsticks, Ester Rosewood doesn’t pull pink on my medium olive skin.
the Bobbi brown are way more moisturizing than the YSL. i’m my experience. I’ve always found the very subtle stain quality to be a perk because they fade so beautifully through the day.
Omg, I collect those YSL lip balms. I stopped wearing lipstick after wearing a mask all of the time. I used to never leave the house without lipstick but now I don't leave the house without lip balm and these are great!
I find that if you're going for a more "sculpted" look, using a much more desaturated shade than a typical bronzer is key. I also have pale, desaturated skin and I use contour shades verging on gray (elf has a contour wand and i use the lightest shade in that range, the formula is decent). I find it to be much more effective than using a bronzing shade and doesn't look like dirt. Edit: I also mostly use it to make my existing features more pronounced rather than to create something I don't have, so putting the product only in the natural hollows of my cheeks and whatnot.
I was just watching Kackie’s new top shelf video in which she describes the Rabanne Lovebalm Hydrating Lip Balm in Soul Kiss (sheer mauve brown). It just occurred to me that it might be the tinted balm you’ve been seeking!

Please try the Romand glasting melting balm in the shade Buffy Coral (it is not coral at all- it is a cool taupey pink). I think it is so so close to your ideal lip balm, except it is probably a bit more pigmented than your ideal. Its definitely less pigmented than the YSL candy glaze though.
Rabanne has a mini eye shadow duo named All Lights on Me, it has an eye gloss that sets down and sparkly taupe shadow that I love. They are my everyday now!

the Bobbi Brown lip product is marketed as a lip tint, so the stain is a bit of a selling point for people who like wearing lip tint/stains. Pretty sure that product is also sold in Asia and that type of lip product is the standard in that market
Javon Ford does great little informational videos about the bromo acid dyes used in ph-adjusting products and a bunch of other cool, non-sensationalistic inside looks at products from a cosmetic chemist’s standpoint! I think you would really enjoy the Beauty Pie Futurelipstick Luxe Shine. It has that texture that’s moisturizing and shiny, but is also thick enough to cling to the lips for a good while and gives a shear wash of color that enhances your natural lip color. All of the shades are very flattering, but there’s a cool toned nude shade called Nothing Nude that is my personal favorite. Also doesn’t hurt that it’s s cheaper than most drugstore lipsticks.
sooooo as much as i like to hear about really expensive beauty products and just listening to you talking about anything at all: i myself am extremely restricted in my budget (have been for a while and will likely be for another while too) and really need thorough, detailed and honest advice like yours on products i can actually afford. now i really don't want this to come across like a complaint or demand even, but your videos on making good decisions for a minimalist wardrobe (i know that's not necessarily the intended term, but it's what those videos are to me) were so extremely helpful to me that i'm getting a bit panicky about missing the drugstore version of this current series 😬 tinted lip balm is such a good product for a tiny budget, so i'd really really appreciate just a hint that the drugstore edition is not off the table or something 😇 personally i'm also very interested in products made with natural ingredients and ethical practices, so on the drugstore level that is weleda, dr. bronner and burt's bees. i do really like the tinted chapsticks of burt's for the texture and colour, but the scent is often too much. nothing can beat the other too in the scent department, but alas: no colour. which is a real shame and makes me almost angry for the purity culture vibes it gives me.
I was full-on NOT expecting that Gucci gloss to do anything other than be sticky, clear lip gloss on your eyes and cheeks.... but holy crap did it completely enhance your look. And if I may say, it has that quiet luxury effect.
Loved this comforting chaos style of review. You also took me back to why I don’t touch lip plumpers. Many moons ago, in the 2000s, I had a mini of lip injection. I put it on my lips, went out on a windy day. My hair stuck to my lips then dragged across my cheek and I had the most ridiculous stripe of a rash across my face. Had to take an antihistamine for my poor bestriped face.
Love the video, the face looks awesome with the Gucci gloss. I love the Gucci gloss. I use it on my lips and it provides a thin coat of gloss that actually lasts, just put a nice thick lip liner and add the gloss over top - perfection!

I believe it was Jen Phelps who found the Phytosurgence Tinted Lip Balms to be wonderful and moisturizing. I have not personally tried them but she has never steered me wrong. Maybe give those a shot. They are supposed to be reasonably priced, too! Hope this helps!
Thanks for helping me understand the Bobbi Brown balm. I’m a cool toned person and purchased the BlackBerry. I couldn’t figure out how I had picked such a poor color match when it turned a brighter + slightly warmer pink thank I expected. Thank goodness I got it on sale. I recommend trying the Finding Ferdinand balm instead.
I wonder if you’d like the Isamaya lip balms (you can buy them without the intense tubes too) especially the black one - but all the colors are so interesting.

Have you tried the YSL love shine lip oil sticks I think it’s thinner than the candy glaze formulation though but they have slight color like you said you wanted 💕
Loved the video as usual! Have you tried the Fresh sugar lip balm in honey or bloom? It's one of those lip balms where the first swipe is pretty pigmented but it calms down after (almost a reverse of the way you have to warm up new cream blush 😂)

Hannah, please try the Nature Republic Honey Melting Lip. They have a bunch of shades and it has a pleasant scent, non plumping, non ph adjusting, doesn’t taste gross, affordable around about $10 and it’s juicy glossy goodness. 🫶🏻
I know they’re not luxury but there’s also the summer Fridays and laneige lip balms. Also not a lip balm, but I really like the Dior lip oil and pretend it’s a lip balm.

Please try the Romand glasting melting balm in the shade Buffy Coral (it is not coral at all- it is a cool taupey pink). I think it is so so close to your ideal lip balm, except it is probably a bit more pigmented than your ideal. Its definitely less pigmented than the YSL candy glaze though.
YSL does make other shades in the same product as well as their love shine lip oil which is less shiny than the one you tried. Love your videos ❤
Rabanne has a mini eye shadow duo named All Lights on Me, it has an eye gloss that sets down and sparkly taupe shadow that I love. They are my everyday now!

the Bobbi Brown lip product is marketed as a lip tint, so the stain is a bit of a selling point for people who like wearing lip tint/stains. Pretty sure that product is also sold in Asia and that type of lip product is the standard in that market
Javon Ford does great little informational videos about the bromo acid dyes used in ph-adjusting products and a bunch of other cool, non-sensationalistic inside looks at products from a cosmetic chemist’s standpoint! I think you would really enjoy the Beauty Pie Futurelipstick Luxe Shine. It has that texture that’s moisturizing and shiny, but is also thick enough to cling to the lips for a good while and gives a shear wash of color that enhances your natural lip color. All of the shades are very flattering, but there’s a cool toned nude shade called Nothing Nude that is my personal favorite. Also doesn’t hurt that it’s s cheaper than most drugstore lipsticks.
I feel the same way about contouring. I hate the bronzing on tje forehead, if its too warm its not looking sun kissed or chiseled!😂
sooooo as much as i like to hear about really expensive beauty products and just listening to you talking about anything at all: i myself am extremely restricted in my budget (have been for a while and will likely be for another while too) and really need thorough, detailed and honest advice like yours on products i can actually afford. now i really don't want this to come across like a complaint or demand even, but your videos on making good decisions for a minimalist wardrobe (i know that's not necessarily the intended term, but it's what those videos are to me) were so extremely helpful to me that i'm getting a bit panicky about missing the drugstore version of this current series 😬 tinted lip balm is such a good product for a tiny budget, so i'd really really appreciate just a hint that the drugstore edition is not off the table or something 😇
personally i'm also very interested in products made with natural ingredients and ethical practices, so on the drugstore level that is weleda, dr. bronner and burt's bees. i do really like the tinted chapsticks of burt's for the texture and colour, but the scent is often too much. nothing can beat the other too in the scent department, but alas: no colour. which is a real shame and makes me almost angry for the purity culture vibes it gives me.
I was full-on NOT expecting that Gucci gloss to do anything other than be sticky, clear lip gloss on your eyes and cheeks.... but holy crap did it completely enhance your look. And if I may say, it has that quiet luxury effect.

Many moons ago, in the 2000s, I had a mini of lip injection. I put it on my lips, went out on a windy day. My hair stuck to my lips then dragged across my cheek and I had the most ridiculous stripe of a rash across my face. Had to take an antihistamine for my poor bestriped face.

I believe it was Jen Phelps who found the Phytosurgence Tinted Lip Balms to be wonderful and moisturizing. I have not personally tried them but she has never steered me wrong. Maybe give those a shot. They are supposed to be reasonably priced, too! Hope this helps!

Thanks for helping me understand the Bobbi Brown balm. I’m a cool toned person and purchased the BlackBerry. I couldn’t figure out how I had picked such a poor color match when it turned a brighter + slightly warmer pink thank I expected. Thank goodness I got it on sale. I recommend trying the Finding Ferdinand balm instead.

Hannah, please try the Nature Republic Honey Melting Lip. They have a bunch of shades and it has a pleasant scent, non plumping, non ph adjusting, doesn’t taste gross, affordable around about $10 and it’s juicy glossy goodness. 🫶🏻
I know they’re not luxury but there’s also the summer Fridays and laneige lip balms. Also not a lip balm, but I really like the Dior lip oil and pretend it’s a lip balm.
