So I did this very same thing but on a bug blitz mission. The bugs are definitely more aggressive but they also don't shoot at you other than the spitters and bile titan. It's the very same bulbous rock formation on the bug planets that have the Super Samples too. What I do is land in the center of the map, get as high as I can and try to find the rock structure and then call in a mech. I use that mech to blast bugs and keep me safe but overall avoid them as best I can. I find the samples and go hide until time runs out and then either call in a new mech if I died or just beat feet to the shuttle. I like your idea of using the smoke and I'm going to try the mech blitz mission to see if I like it better.
Good thing there are no consequences for failing missions, at least for now, otherwise, community and democratic command would be very upset with this kind of useful tutorials
Works very well. if extraction is not in a bot nest you can casually walk up and out. Note that the autocall-in of the evac shuttle will pull nearby patrols to come investigate. you can move off until they do and never even get shot at.

How do you only have 3 Strategem options at level 38?
At higher levels, the maps have different modifiers. One of them against the bots is they jam your 4th stratagem slot so that you can only bring 3.
Once you play enough of the harder missions you will get used to some of the punishing modifiers you have to deal with.

I must suck at stealth because I've tried this multiple times, and I somehow get spotted even on the top of a tall rock.
I’ve heard there’s currently an issue with bots spotting us through terrain after the most recent patch.
