- I made fantasy landscapes using ancient software Terragen Classic...
New (experimental) channel is here: / @lazyposy
Here's my music: posy.bandcamp.com/
NOTE: Terragen Classic is ANCIENT software and NOT available for download! (officially...) If you want to create landscapes, try recent software like Terragen 4 for example... unsponsored link: planetside.co.uk/ - Розваги
only a few people have mastered the art of "doing what ever they want" - this channel is a good example for someone who did
Hah thank you! Interesting perspective 🙂
It is a channel about everything, and nothing after all.
@@lomtiptak9519 everything and everything*
now fixed 🤔
Yet alone doing all of those things *well*. I still use the Posy mouse cursor not because i saw it in a video but because its genuinely good and a lot of thought went into it.
@@Big-Chungus21 Same!
The only youtuber that will visit other planets to avoid using stock footage
Dude this is PHENOMENAL. Every scene looks absolutely fantastic
Thank you! :)
Props to you good sir for getting this footage of planets
Thank the camera man
Drone pilots truly are doing some amazing things these days.
he really went… above and beyond
I watched this video several times and I noticed that the sound doesn't really make sense. I call this one fake, guys😤

Posy's visuals are always great but man what really stands out is how beautifully he crafts the audio.
This is beautiful work. I really love what you did with the more abstract renders
Thank you! :)
That's super impressive for early 2000s standards
The surface texturing was so good as well - nothing these days can match the simplicity and detail without horrendous processing requirements.
@@bigogle Well no, I think the texturing would be based on a noise algorithm used in pretty much all 3D VFX.
These beautiful landscapes remind me of a program from the same time period called Bryce 3D that created gorgeous fractal landscapes. It had a slick little UI for 1998, and I used to love making desktop wallpaper with it.
Can you also tell me about more such softwares that are easy on my computer? I want to experiment with cinematography and CGI 😢
@@LanaaAmor Try Blender. It’s free and updated frequently
@@TheCrewExpendable but is it optimised for terrain generation?
@@LanaaAmor it's a general 3d program, it _should_ be able to handle it, and plus there's a built in add-on called a.n.t. landscapes that allow for terrain generation in blender itself
Woah Bryce 3D, there’s a name I haven’t heard in a very long time!
Awesome! Also cool "dramatic music" using that shepard's tone type of effect.
Thanks! Nice you noticed that :-)
Oh my god, Terragen! I have fond memories of rendering a little 10 second, 480p loop (as a series of JPEGs, no less) of an island flyby on the family computer that took all night back in the early 2000s. It almost made me late for school, but we did get an A on that project.
You're a genius! each one of your videos are super creative and unique! they always come up with something new! (don't feel pressure, if you just feel like continuing to explore something we've already seen, we'll all stay here on the ship) We love you Dr Zaius!!!
Thanks! Now I have to Google Dr. Zaius...
Always gotta applause the harmony of graphic and audio design of Posy. Got me feeling a certain calm.
For such an old software, it looks very nice, even has its own vibe to it that reminds you of a different era.
Beautiful visualizations.
I love the aesthetics of the uncanny valley version of landscapes. Familiar and Surreal.
The landscapes you managed to pull here mesmerise me beyond words.
Thank you! :)
Some of the shots here are truly magical. Great work, keep it up.
Thank you :)
You make some of the coolest stuff I’ve seen on UA-cam. I’m so glad I found your channel :)
Thank you :)
Oh wow, I remember how my uncle showed me Terragen back when I was maybe 11 or 12 years old... I recall the mesmerizing way in which Terragen renders the landscape, somehow following the terrain but yet always unpredictable. Damn that's now almost 20 years ago. Needless to say I didn't create such beautiful landscapes like yours!
Omg, I had completely forgotten about Terragen! As a kid I was very attached to my creations in the game Spore, and I got into all sorts of worldbuilding communities because I wanted to develop the story of my favourite creatures and their home planet. One of my (never completed) projects was a series of renders in Terragen 0.9
Found your channel this morning and while playing your videos, I started dusting off and a CD/tape playerI found in the street some month ago. Then I started playing the few CDs I still have around and had a moment of nostalgia and reliving all the iconic scratches in my discs. Decided to grab something to eat and watched this video meanwhile eating. Now I'm installing Terragen Classic in a virtual machine to load up my old .tgw files from 2002! Thank you for providing such delightful content and big love!
I am glad to have discovered someone else still creating things with antiquated software.
In 2004, LEGO released a program that let users build LEGO sets with bricks that they'd made. Quite a few colors to pick from and thousands of different types of bricks, and even decals on ones like tiles and minifigure heads. Quite some time after it had been released, I discovered it and spend many, many hours using it to build actual sets and my own creations alike. I redownloaded it after a long time a few weeks before writing this comment and went through all of the old files on my PC that I'd made with it the program. It was amazing. I introduced it to somebody I know since they wanted to do the same thing I'd did when I was younger, and they did what I did, except many years later.
I don't know when LEGO stopped supporting the program, but it might have even been when I first used it. Perhaps I, too, used antiquated software to create.
Lego Digital Designer was actually supported from 2003 all the way to 2019. A modified version of it was used in the development of the Lego movies.
It was retired in 2019 mostly as Lego had just purchased Bricklink, and with that now owned Bricklink Studio which is a spiritual successor to LDD made by fans. The renders you can make in Studio are really quite crazy good, and the brick price checker is also super useful :)
"babe wake up posy just posted"
right now, you is my greatest human inspiration regarding work and creativity.
Wow thank you :)
1:37 It could well be the introduction of a production company like Paramount, an ad of a new MacBook from Apple, or a quick start to Windows. I'm in love with this video. Good work.
What a great video Posy! Exactly the sort of quality I expect from you.
Thanks! :)
Can’t believe I missed this video. What a great one! Brings me back to those days playing with Bryce 3d as well. Amazing results. Would make a great screensaver in fact! Thank you.
watching ur vids make me feel like a kid again. unreal how much inspiration i get from this
I really love your editing
And your audio quality is very pleasing!
Thank you for the enjoyable video!
I just wanted to say that the sound design in this video is probably the best I've ever heard. Period.
In songs, podcasts, movies, and videos.
Posy is the absolute best when it comes to voice recordings pushing paper cones in and out.
Next level, no words.
the cinematics in this video are absolutely beautiful! yet another great video!
P.S. thanks for the video about the green flash, I was lucky enough to be able to capture it on camera a few weeks ago while I was on vacation in the warm, humid tropics.
This is really incredible. Such an awesome piece of art and such a cool premise to make a video about ancient software. Props to you.
Posy, you bring on LSD flashbacks. I'll remember to check your channel out next time I'm munted on a farm-stay in Nimbin. Great stuff mate, thanks for being you!
Posy I love your videos so much. Old technology is so fascinating and I’m so happy to see people like you bringing it back to life!
Great content as always. I'd consider adding a link to the new channel in the description of this video as I was unable to find it
It's in the description now also 😁
In the first minute I saw the landscapes and thought "this reminds me of TerraGen" turns out it was! Hell yeah
In 1997 these renders would be postal stamp sized and take a day to render. I remember using 3DS Max rendering all night just to wake up and see it was not what was intended. I bet running that software now renders the same image at thousands of FPS. How far has it come in just 25 years. Can't imagine the future.
this has become my new favorite channel, presenting niche topics in an incredibly cinematic way makes every vid a treat, dankewel posy!
o hey. cool to see you here
Im in love with the aesthetics of your videos
This is so beautiful -- sometimes older is better, even in software. Sometimes, indeed, creativity is inversely proportional to complexity of means.
I love all the variety you have in your videos. I really enjoy coming back to find something fascinating to me that I've never thought about before, or never even knew existed. I enjoy the original music as well.
Awesome video, I actually found your channel ~2 years back through your old blog site with the renders which in turn I found by looking through the relics of old Terragen forums; really cool to see what old software went behind the sort of "posters" of the 2000s web. Also gave me greater appreciation for the visual sense, which of course this channel is great with haha
What a lovely way to start off the week. Thank you and happy new year. If that’s how you do new, years that is.
This is a very nice new channel, great images backed up with great audio!!! Back in around 2005, I created a Powerpoint Presentation using half a dozen or so images, the gradually turned them from a frozen landscape (Mars) to a balmy wilderness, with blue skies, lakes and vegetation. First image was a part of a spaceship which I called 'The Mars Global Seeder' seen from above in orbit seeding the planet with something to attract the suns heat to warm it, then a second Seeder to create vegetation. I added commentary to each slide which took forever to do; but my young daughter at the time loved it! Animation would have been impossible with only 128mb's of memory. Now we are talking in gigabytes of memory hahahahaha
I love this!! Reminds me of a creator I follow called Screaming Brain Studios - they make public domain art assets exclusively using old abandonware and other types of ancient software. Gives it all a special look you almost can't find anymore
These visuals are gorgeous. Glad to see another high-quality piece of content.
I fucking love this channel, it's the perfect example of visual and auditory art! The videos follow the typical video essay format, but do it in such an artistic and unique way that literally any topic you talk about will be extremely intriguing. Literally you've talked about different types of LCD screens, to different cool/old tech that you own, to software marvels such as mouse cursors, and even math. Keep doing what you're doing, you genuinely are one of the coolest youtubers/artists out there, your videos are simply just awesome!!!
wasn't sure if this channel is my top favorite, then you uploaded a video about terrain generation. now I'm sure.
Thank you, I'm glad that my random topics are appreciated (so far...)
Holy shit. I remember playing around with terragen back in the early 2000's. What a blast!
This reminds me strongly of rendered scenes from Lexx
I've just been inspired to buy the set, as my old VHS are a little worn out.
Thank you, Mr. Posy
As always such a quality of production I love how you make these sound and visual goes well together.
I feel like a Drum and Bass soundtrack would go hand in hand with this video.
Love your videos!! They really help scratch that itch I have for learning about incredibly niche topics, and different ones all the time! Not many channels post this sort of thing
Thank you :)
Oh my god, I've spent so much time on this software when I was young! I didn't even knew how to speak english but I managed to learn how to use the controls just by trial and error, it was always amazing when it worked
You should really take a look at the software space engine I read somewere it generates planets like the way you did in the video
Bedankt trouwens voor de geweldige videos, het zijn echt kunstwerken op zichzelf!
yes, SE uses procedural generation to render 3D surfaces for its' planets. but it is a way more advanced and incredible program beyond just that capability
Awesome to see more videos from you, your channel is by far one of my favourites
The first time I used Terragen was in 1998. I used Pentium 166 to generate images with it. I was an assistant in a computer class of a children's education center. There was 10 computers in the lab and I could use all of them to make different landscapes when there were no classes. The second program I used to generate landscapes was WCS, or World Construction Set. It was in nearly the same time as I used Terragen. I still have some renderings saved on my PC now, but the earliest Terragen rendering I managed to keep till then is dated by 2002.
the sfx brings so much life to this video, whatever topic you choose for a vid, it's always amazing to see your perspective for it.
I think it's pretty clear that successful videos are one that focus on the interesting unknowns of everyday things (and have artsy, simple, colourful thumbnails). Not sure if you want to optimize your channel more, but if so that's the best
These renders are perfect desktop background material!
your videos are always such a treat! i never would have known about most of the topics you cover
You're a unique voice on this website. I know I'll love this video
Your videos tingle my brain in so many ways. Thanks!
Had to stop and grab my headphones. Truly amazing footage and audio! Really love your content!
This reminds me of Vista Pro on the Amiga back in the day
Always a treat when the algorithm feeds me a fresh Posey upload.
This UA-cam channel is art it seems so old but it’s so new it’s just amazing
Excellent video, Posy! It deserves just as many views as your other big ones. I hope you make more of the same quality.
you make great content
"dude wake up, the LCD video essay man uploaded"
Beautiful. Thanks for your whole channel!
no stock footage used? damn, you put a lot of effort into this one. respect!!
Never stop creating content. I love your art 🖤
this is so nostalgic! I remember playing around with terragen when I was in middle school. had no idea what I was doing
Everything you do is so amazing im such a huge fan!! ✨
Beautiful art, Mr. Posy. Amazing!
This feels like a movie. Great job Posy, been loving your content since before your blow-up :)
What a piece of art, keep it up posy
You Sir, Are a poet. I mean it.
Thanks 😁
This video is a future classic.
posy this is so so so fkn good. i cant wait to see you creating with more and more freedom and muse everyday.
muse over intention posy, muse over intention.
Amazing video and amazing channel! This video made me very interested and curious about terragen! Thanks for the great content
I came across your channel, loved all the LCD colors its magical, subbed. Cool software!
I remember that my machine at that time was much to slow to render any animation in sensible resolution. I used it once to just create a clouds-only image which took 3days to render in 1024x768.
There was a tool before, which was completely DOS based: "Vista Pro" which did the heightmap-landscape thing (including trees) but without the aewsome atmospheric simulation of terragen.
your videos are amazingly out of the ordinary, veel respect man!
@Posy - The audio quality and sound effects are amazing, but I'm also impressed with your graphics skills now too.
I love your aesthetic, whether it's created in software or real life.
I love every single last video of yours please keep going
Thumbs up for using both beeps in the space intercom chatter.
Editing 10, sound design 10, humor 10, terragen 10. keep m coming Posy
Thank you! :)
The lighting and colors in this video are breathtaking
I love the storytelling
Incredible video quality has always thx!
Ahhh I remember Terragen .. it was so cool to create and explore your own worlds.
The new channel has been very interseting. Thanks for the contents
Thank you!! 🙂
4:43 Just leaving this hear for another time when I will undoubtedly need to come back to this video and hear the name of that planet again.
this is the best channel about totally random and wonderful things

That one is soon to be real, right here on Earth. Saudi Arabia is building a linear city called NEOM , also The Line, and it will look almost exactly like that.
I always love your videos!
Thank you very much for these interesting videos, very beautiful in every aspect. Thank you, you lunatic.
You managed to take us outside this world! Btw, already subscribed since long, but UA-cam still showed me your "Segmented Displays" today and I had to manually check if there's anything btw from you.
