Toyota has LOST its way

  • Has Toyota lost its way? We saw a turnover of key leadership positions last year to include the CEO... The new Toyota CEO (Koji Sato) replaced the grandson (Akio Toyoda) of Toyota's founder... and Koji is carrying a totally different approach. An approach that isn't in alignment with the core values we've seen from Toyota in the past. Buying a new Toyota has always revolved around 3 things: 1) Reliability, 2) Simplicity, and 3) Affordability. Those 3 traits lent itself nicely to great resale values. Not anymore. The new 2024 Toyota Tacoma and Tundra are total flops. Dealerships are having to SLASH prices and offer insane APR interest rates in order to actually move their inventory. They've stacked up on dealer lots this last 1-2 years. Only with HUGE discounts and great rates are they able to sell them. People don't love the new Tundra, nor do they love the new Tacoma. People are voting with their pocketbook right now. Which is why we see soooo many brand new 2024 Toyota Tacomas and Tundras just collecting dust on lots. The move to smaller turbo engines was a misstep by Toyota.
Toyota wasn't "forced" to downsize motors due to EPA/emission requirements. They're just incentivized more to do so by the government is all. They get less credits back from the government with naturally aspirated V6s and V8s. That's all. Nobody is "forcing" their hand. It's a money move is all. Dropping the engine size... moving production entirely to Mexico, and slapping $50K+ price tags on them... Yay. And $65K+ for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and Trailhunter. That's disturbing. Get a Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison or Ford Ranger Raptor instead... for a bit less.
I truly do love Toyota, and I know that gets lost in these videos. I want Toyota to stick to the core values that have made them great... not go with woke route. What are your thoughts? Do you agree? Am I being too harsh on Toyota?
Thank you for watching as always, I sincerely appreciate your support. If you haven't done so already, please consider Liking and Subscribing... More candid critique like this to come.

But I'm reading on the forums that many long term tacoma owners are not taking the bait. I hear they are buying ZR 2's for 48K, or frontier P4X's etc.. The segment is red hot with good options and Toyota has literally priced themselves right out of the mix. Price wise they aren't even close. You buy this brand on credit figure 200-300 more/month (I actually did the math on this). Somebody forgot the basics of business here. That is to do a feasibility analysis. Because at these MSRP's its not sustainable. Not even remotely so.

Your title is not wrong. I am Japanese living in Canada. Before my family came to Canada, my father had a corporate career with Toyota for 17 years, and he has been disappointed with Toyota's current choices and direction, particularly with their 4x4s and North American market. He says their "global platform" might save on production costs, but it is a bad idea, long term. Alienating regular customers kills any business. If someone dislikes the turbo 4 cylinder in the Taco, it takes every other Toyota mid-sized 4x4 off their potential buy list. The English saying " Never put all of your eggs in one basket" is learning the hard way. Toyota limit R&D funding to develop 4x4 platforms, especially for North America. The 6th gen 4Runner was designed by Toyota America. Toyota is now just selling Too many different name badges on one platform. Too many! Every Land Cruiser, the 6th gen 4Runner, new Tacoma, GX, LX etc. They are ALL the same now. The mid-sized GX 550 is apparently heavier than the "full-sized" LC 300 Series.
Unfortunately Toyota has become like American manufacturers and just leveraging popularity of name badges, slapping popular names on anything, rather then respecting what these brands are supposed to be...
The 6th gen Toyota was an after thought... I understand my dad's disappointment

@@thomas735 Toyota switched to what they call their "global platform", which is the 1 platform being used for ALL of their body-on-frame vehicles, full-size and medium-sized. Whoever your government is has nothing to do with their choice. Toyota is cutting production costs by using 1 platform and 2 engines in North America and an added diesel option for the east.
If by "the government", you mean American government, the vast majority of Toyota's sales are in the eastern hemisphere (Africa, Asia, middle east). US efficiency regulations have nothing to do with their using this global platform to cut costs. Governments have efficiency requirements, not mpg requirements. Asia and Europe have always used smaller, more efficient engines. North American engines were always wastefully big, just to sell more fuel. I was not criticizing the more efficient engines. Just the lack of engine options, which Toyota will regret.

A large battery and simple electric motors are much more reliable and will last longer than ICE vehicles.
An electric motor can run for 1 million miles and batteries can last over 500,000 miles. ICE vehicles can't beat them.

Nearly every car manufacturer is moving to lower displacement engines to eke out better mpg’s, and Toyota is not going to bring back a naturally aspirated V6 because the market is slow. Every manufacturer is also seeing a big backlog of vehicles on the lot. Even the “simplicity” of the Nissan Frontier (naturally aspirated V6 in the $40+k range), has a pretty high market day supply. I see 122 of them within 50 miles of me here in Front Range Colorado…some ‘24’s that have been on the market for more than 200 days. Man keep preaching 99% of us Toyota fan boys feel the same way. I had a brand new 22 tundra SR5 trd sport and had to have the engine replaced at 600 miles, then the waste gate went out of the turbo and then they found it had faulty roof welds. I got a lemon law attorney and Toyota ended up buying the truck back from me and reimbursing every cent I had paid into it. It was the biggest disappointment of my life.

Only thing I'd disagree with is that the Taco is in the image of Sato's vision for Toyota, because this Taco has been in development long before he took the reigns.

Thank you for your unbiased constructive criticism. A lot of these social media guys that hype up these newer trucks probably didn't even own a Toyota until the 3rd gen Tacoma came around(that was actually the beginning of the bean counters taking over). If Toyota built a brand new Pickup from the 90's and I had to choose between it and a new plastic one, I'd choose the classic every time for it's simplicity. 90's was peak Toyota ingenuity.

My last 4 trucks were Toyotas, my next will be a Ford. I’m not spending $50,000 for a 4 cylinder truck made in Mexico.

I think the new Tacoma is great. The 4cyl is in GM , ford Ranger , as far as long term and durability , but all mfg are going that way. Our govt is putting such tight restrictions on auto makers. Sucks !! I have a 24 TRD off road (2,600) so far. When I was pricing a midsize truck that’s loaded premium stuff they are all in the same price ballpark!
    You’re beating a dead horse.

Toyota is messing up big time. That 2.4L T sucks too. I’m seeing bad main bearings in the V6 TT. Who wants to spend $50k for a Rav4? $85k for a Tundra. Just ludicrous. And they there’s word that Toyota will charge customers to use the equipment that they bought with the vehicle, like MB does. Absurd

Honestly the new taco is a better effort then the 3rd gen. The 8 speed is a big improvement over that horrible 6 speed. And the turbo adds much needed low end torque. They finally got disc brakes in the back and the coil rear suspension is an improvement. What they got wrong was a very cheap interior full of hard plastics. A tacked on center display is not integrated well at all. The back seat is unusable. But they did improve the seat height up front which was sorely needed. So on average I'd say they did address some of the long term issues. The problem is the MSRP is 5-15K over the rest of the segment. Factoring in the cheap labor at the Mexican plants this is way over priced. In no way shape or form is it worth the asking. I mean you can buy ZR 2 for 48K with the multimatic suspension etc.. If they slashed the prices 8-10K across the board it would be competitive in the segment. Die hard fanbois will still pay the excessive prices and also try to rationalize those insane MSRP's. But from what I'm hearing most taco loyalist are NOT liking the new prices or the engine. They are shooting themselves in the foot. The brand is going to take a major hit in reputation. You can't be this far off price wise in the segment. Consumers know a bad value when they see it.

There's actually three massive problems with the modern Tundra and Tacoma:
    1. The trucks have got too big, look at a Tundra from 20 years ago compared to now.
    2. The trucks have got too luxurious, and as a result they're being upsold to folks who would be just fine with cars like the Camry, ES, or Crown (RIP Avalon).
    3. As a result of getting too big and too luxurious they're getting too expensive for folks who would normally use these vehicles for work. Said folks go to the used market instead.
Also Akio basically approved the current Tacoma and Tundra so it isn't like he isn't culpable. Kaji Soto hasn't even really had time to put much development in when he just got the job a year ago. The Tundra was done with Akio retired and Tacoma was mostly done.
These trends have been going on for a long time. My solution is for more people who don't need Tundras and Tacomas to NOT BUY THEM. Buy a Camry or Corolla instead. Don't let salespeople upsell you.
A final note: the hybrids are not the common reliability failure point on the Taco or the Tundra. The internal combustion parts of the engine are what is breaking down. Priuses reguarly get 400k-500k on the road without any issues to their hybrid systems because they aren't using turbochargers or other poorly engineered parts.

Not sure with the reliability risks regarding the hybrid turbo in the TRD Pro brings similar value as the Ford Ranger Raptor. The latter at least has a v6 turbo so it’s a bit less stressed in the engine department not to mention the better off road specs and 10-speed. Provided you can wait for dealership markups to fade away, the Ranger Raptor is a much better buy I think (value to price it seems).

I studied Kaizen for 2 years in business school. Toyota was the pinnacle of manufacturing, quality and engineering philosophy. Ironically, their workforce was a big part of their respective successes. Now what…trucks made in Mexico for outrageous prices and a philosophy that has moved to what’s hot and politically correct. Disposable cars competing with disposable cars. Not a harsh take at all…

I am a big fan of the new I-4 engine, but I hate the 3.4L V6 engine. For example, I will choose the new LC with the i4 engine anytime over the Lexus GX alternative that has "the more powerful" V6 engine.
My biggest issue with Toyota is the outrageously hiked pricing, not the turbo-charging or the hybridization, or even the spike of the recent reliability issues. $56k for a Tacoma TRD-Off Road with the Premium package, are they kidding me? I bought my 2021 Tundra Limited TRD Off-Road with the Premium package for $51k and do not start with that the reason for the higher prices is the inflation, which is bull shit.
To sum it up: I will never pay what they are asking for a Tacoma. I rather go and buy a Ranger/Colorado if I want a new truck or for a used truck, I will still go with the 2nd gen Tundra.
Also, I would not buy the 3rd gen Tacoma that comes with the super reliable 3.5 V6 engine. That V6 3.5L engine and automatic transmission is so lethargic and screamy that I would puke every time I got ride in the 3rd gen Tacoma.
The new Tacoma is a much better truck than the previous one, but that still does not justify the high $50 to high $60k price tags they want. They can dream as much as they want to earn my business again. Sorry Toyota, I will never buy a new vehicle from you again. You lost a loyal customer.

While the pricing on the new Tacoma could be on the new CEO, the design of the new Tacoma was almost entirely decided under Akio.
I work for one of the suppliers, and started this job during the Tacoma tooling install. Based on the timeline for a project that I was here for the start of, the Tacoma project on our end started at the end of 2021. This is when we got nearly finalized designs and began the process of building out the equipment to support the new components, to then be installed about a year later. It wasn't until my last trip to the local plant for the install of this equipment that Koji took the position of CEO, when Toyota already had a few of the new Tacomas built for testing
