- Tesla hosts its 'We, Robot' event on Thursday at Warner Bros. Discovery's movie studio in Burbank, California. Elon Musk said the company has made a lot of progress on its Optimus robot and that it will eventually cost between $20,000 and $30,000. He said it will be able to "be a teacher, babysit your kids, walk your dog, mow your lawn, get the groceries...Whatever you can think of it will do." The robots walked among the crowd at the event.

Yeah probably at launch. Its all about the supply chain and supply and demand. Itll come out expensive and as time goes on it should be cheaper as long as its a successful product.
Not only that, it will be back ordered just like the cybertruck. So you will end up having people who get them first, sell them and mark them up to 150 grand. Just like they did the cybertruck.
It will come down in price over time. This is years away when they're able to manufacture millions a year

@Think666_ the roadsters were kinda put on halt for other products but itll be out soon enough. They added multiple warehouses and are working on the supply chain and employees needed to add another car line to their factories

I think to help the elderly and disabled, these robots are the future. They assist the elderly and disabled without attitude, or fear, or abuse. It will enable them to stay in their own homes.
Imagine. You're on your death bed and a robot is the only thing that interacts with you in you final moments, your final memories being not with loved ones but with an android with no emotions, empathy, or care. No one will be there to hear your final words, mark your exact time of death or even change you.
Or, imagine you're a social worker, like a Hospice nurse. You've spent years studying in college, spent money on pursuing a career in helping and assisting the elderly, doing God's work for something you love. All of that is stripped away once the company you work for lays you off just to replace you with a robot that will be taking care of your patients for you. All your work has been for nothing as you are now unemployed and half the jobs that match your skillset have been taken by automated robots.
This is not the future. This is dystopian.
If your on a death bead your in a hospital meaning nurses will probably be their and a robot would be better than nobody and no matter how much technology improves we will still need humans. I’m guessing you got these ideas from a movie

My prediction is there will be different plans, 20k-30k is just the standard plan. If you allow your Optimus to feed back all data it collects back to Tesla, you'll get a reduced price. If you even sign up for a "robot teaching program" the price gets reduced further.
The potential is enormous. With millions of humanoid robots deployed in all kinds of different environments, the data they collect will be extremely valuable for AI development, and maybe getting this data is even a necessary precondition for developing true AGI.
Imagine you sign up for a program where per time unit of usage you have to teach the robot for a time like you would a child. Showing him how to do different things in your environment, naming objects, doing simple experiments, and most importantly answer a lot of questions. The better you are as a robot teacher, the more money you save probably.
All this is then fed back to Tesla to become part of a huge real-world data-set that doesn't just include cold intangible internet knowledge, but interactions with humans of all sorts, what they find important, what they like and don't like, how they interact, how the world works. And training your systems on that, you get more and more human-like intelligence, leading us to AGI.

It could easily be cheaper to support elderly people in their homes this way and free up workers. And imagine when it could function like Baymax. An in-house medic is certainly not bad either.
I don't know what your job is, but if the average net income in the us is $54k, assumed you're working 40 hours a week, that's $26 an hour after taxes, which means you would have to work less than 1.200 hours to pay for it. That means when it has done 1.200 hours of chores, it will have been worth the time you spent working. Theoretically, you could work that bit more if you wanted to earn that much more money with the time you don't have to spend on chores.
All theoretical until we see it actually do it, but if it becomes what Elon promises, it will definitely be something worthwhile.
You need to realize his words are very smart with how he says things.

I remember as a kid watching the Jetons and Rosie being the nanny. It's crazy how that's actually becoming a reality .
I think the one of the problems of many of us is that we couldn’t see ourselves. We are so into doing our things, we couldn’t see our input/output patterns. Robot like this can collect data and answer our healthcare professionals when we can’t recall what we have done or eaten, read, listened 3 weeks ago.
I'm just happy it doesn't have an uncanny valley robot face like all the other robot prototypes.
