You aren’t allowed to by the Cybertruck here yet, but I’m SURE they’d allow a proper van version of it when the demand is soo high right now but not a lot of great publicly known options.

      @truhartwood3170 6 годин тому +6

      I don't think it will be in production until after FSD is solved. He said it will go into production before the end of 2026, which means it will actually go into production in 2029 - 2030ish. As I watch the progress of FSD over the last 4 years, I would say they're on a trajectory to have it solved by the end of next year, end of 2026 at the latest.

    Another interpretation of these events is that one of Tesla's key objectives is to recruit the best talent. This is like a giant recruitment video to encourage the brightest minds to join the company. For me this solution seems more about the problems of LA. However, my golf club 57 years ago voted to move from close to the centre of Birmingham to 2 miles outside the city. At that time it there were no laws stopping you drinking and driving. Of course the world has changed. Now it is very hard to get a taxi to come out to the golf club. Robo taxis would presumably solve that problem.
    Tesla seems to be the only car company making a profit, whilst I agree someone I thought this would be even more spectacular - no other car company making a profit is putting on events like Tesla does. I think the Tesla team deserves some credit.
    Why no talk of vehicle model developments. - The Osborne effect. As soon as you say and in 2025 we will have a Model Y (etc) which will be twice as good as the current model. Sales of the current model will go off a cliff. I think Elon has learned that to his cost.

    • @JDLuke
      @JDLuke Годину тому

      I agree.
      On that last point, the upcoming Model Y refresh is something that those of us in-the-know are anticipating with bated breath. We upgraded our 3 to a Highland and we will upgrade our Y to a Juniper. But why sabotage sales of the best-selling car in the world?
      On another note, I figure that they use the alphabet for their code names, and there was some product in between the Highland and the Juniper. I wonder if that's the cab.

Instead, Tesla has lots of unused space in and around the Texas gigafactory and plans to start manufacturing robotaxis there. This will also offer the significant benefit of having the designers (currently based in Texas) being able to visit the factory floor to get feedback on what aspect's of the car's design are easy or difficult to manufacture.

    I've been automating robots for over 40 years and have learned that, first we automate the functionality, then we go for speed! It is the combination of function and speed in robots that I still find amazing. But speed is the true force multiplier. A single robot, sufficiently capable, can easily do the work of many people. I've proven that many times over.

  • @dxtr85

    They did not show the new production line nor the compact car, probably because they fear of Osbourne effect wiping out demand for existing products.
    I hope that with the unboxed process they gradually transition from old way of manufacturing to the new one, starting from the most expensive model S and X. This way they can redesign Fremont factory to adapt unboxed process. I would expect the cheapest car to be unveiled last, after existing models, slightly refreshed visually and also significantly less expensive and thus more popular, pop out of unboxed lines.

    • @CiaranMcHale
      @CiaranMcHale Годину тому

      My vague recollection is that Optimus was designed to be not overly heavy to minimize the possibility of it crushing somebody if it fell on them. In effect, it will weigh about the same or less as a slim man of similar height. As such, a strong person to carry out.
      I *think* every Tesla car as a unique ID that enables it to be tracked, and this can be used to locate a stolen Tesla vehicle. I'm guessing that the same approach might be taken with Optimus.

      Uber drivers typically say that 80 - 90% of rides are only one to two people. When FSD is solved then every Tesla built after around 2019 will be able to be a robotaxi, so the 3s and Ys can take all the 3 - 5 passenger rides. Cybertruck as well, plus it can be rented to haul stuff. And, worse case, people can just take as many Cybercabs as they need. I think the idea is that there will be so many and they're so cheap that it won't mean half the group is getting to a destination 15 min after the first people, and with it only costing a few bucks per ride it doesn't really incentivize splitting the bill with multiple people.

    How will robotaxis help with congestion? Wouldn’t it do the opposite - they would be on the road all the time. But maybe there’d be fewer of cars overall - so does that balance it out enough that congrstion is alleviatee because there are fewer cars that are, however, much more on the road each of them?

    • @WARnTEA
      @WARnTEA 5 годин тому +1

      Congestion would stay the same because the number of people traveling from point A to point B no remain the same no matter what car they use. The Robovan does have potential to dramatically lower congestion if the general public see it as a viable alternative for transportation because buses have been proven to be very valuable for congestion, its just that people tend to not like public transportation.
      The main improvement from Robotaxis is that it dramatically lowers the amount of parking spaces we need paved since a taxi never parks it just moves onto the next person. This allows cities to be built at higher densities due to a lower requirement for parking, and most importantly the number of vehicles that will need to be produced in general will drop dramatically because 10+ people a day can share the same car instead of all 10 of those people needing to own a personal car that spends more than 20hours a day just sitting in a parking spot.
      For the average person robotaxis will be amazing because it will be an even better form of Uber, not only will it be cheaper than Uber for rides, but it will be more reliable and convenient because Robotaxis can just park and charge their battery while they wait for a fair instead of having Uber drivers roam around the city looking for fairs and then log off when they stop getting fairs. Robotaxis can exist in a parking spot until someone needs them. This is huge because people can own a Robotaxi for personal use and while they are at work, they can set it to take uber rides and make that person passive income during the time when they would otherwise not be using the vehicle.

    • @JDLuke
      @JDLuke Годину тому

      In big cities, much of the congestion comes from parking, in my experience. Blocking a lane while parking, driving around searching for a spot, and an entire lane on each side of the road dedicated to cars that are sitting still.
      If the car drops you off and immediately picks someone up who is standing a block away waiting, things will be smoother overall, I think.

      If everybody takes a robocall from home to the office and back, every day - and no one uses public transport - congestion will increase. If some takes a robocab from home to the station, congestion might decrease as more people will choose the combination robocab - train/bus - robocab.
      Furthermore, lots of parking space will be free for other use.

    • @CiaranMcHale
      @CiaranMcHale Годину тому

      Congestion is like to increase, because robotaxis will be as cheaper or cheaper, and more convenient, than public transport. So the number of people commuting via bus/train will drop and the number of robotaxis will increase, thus resulting in more congestion. This is not idle speculation on my part. Some studies have shown that when Uber comes available in a city, it is "cheap enough and more convenient" than public transport, and the result is that the number of people using public transport declines by a few percent.

    • @gurlilarsen6671
      @gurlilarsen6671 51 хвилина тому

      @@CiaranMcHale The effect on the use of public transport is not evident to me. I don't have the modeling skills nor the data to make a case, but my personal options in transport between a semi-remote home and a downtown office is currently limited to a car ride with the hassle of finding and paying for parking and using public transport with the hassle of walking to the bus stop, riding a bus to the metro station, then walking from a metro station to the office. None of the two is as compelling as taking a cyber cab to the metro - and another cyber cab from the metro to the office.
      I agree that the consumer price of public transport is a barrier, although the price is influenced by the utilisation of same public transport.
      Furthermore, congestion has (at least) two different manifestations. Traffic and parking. Most municipalities try to deal with congestion in order to prevent city streets from filling up with immobile vehicles - parked or trying to move. Historically attempts to limit traffic has been done to limit pollution and noise, more than limit the flow of people per se.

      Tesla's S3XY range of cars will be able to cater for taxi rides involving 3+ passengers and/or long-distance travel. However, studies have shown that the majority of taxi rides are for just 1 or 2 people and for relatively short trips. As such, Tesla's robotaxi has been designed to cater for the majority of taxi rides. By having seating for just 2 people instead of 5, Tesla saves on the number of seats and doors required, which reduces manufacturing cost and weight. Likewise, use of a single motor and not providing all-wheel drive reduces cost and weight while still providing a "fast enough" vehicle for its intended use. All this can then result in a robotaxi using a smaller-than-average battery (again reducing cost and weight) will still having good-enough range for its intended use.

      Studies have shown that the majority of taxi trips carry only 1 or 2 passengers. This creates the opportunity to design a robotaxi with just 2 seats and just 2 doors. Doing that reduces manufacturing costs and lowers weight. In addition, a robotaxi will be doing mostly slow city driving and a small amount of highway travel to the airport, so the robotaxi won't need all-wheel drive, insanely fast acceleration or a very high top speed. This means that a single motor (rather than multiple motors) will suffice, again reducing manufacturing costs and weight. The lower weight will make it possible for the robotaxi to get "good enough" range with a smaller (and therefore cheaper) battery pack.
      I read recently that each Waymo robotaxi costs over $100K (apparently about $40K of that is for the suite of sensors; LiDAR is expensive). So if Tesla's robotaxi costs 3 or 4 times less to manufacture than Waymo's, that gives Tesla a significant competitive advantage that is likely to outweigh Waymo's "first to market" advantage.
      For the minority of taxi trips involve 3+ people or long-distance travel, a customer can specify they need one of the FSD-equipped S3XY cars as their robotaxi.

      An Apple event typically show a new product and state it will be available for purchase within the next few days/weeks. Apple has done well with that approach. In contrast, a Tesla event typically shows a prototype and states (sometimes over-optimistically) it will be available for purchase within two years. Tesla has done well with this different approach, but in a "is the glass half empty or half full" kind of way.
      The lack of "this product will be available for purchase immediately" message means that short-term investors/speculators are disappointed and the share price declines slightly. However, by divulging future plans, long-term investors can think, "I have 2+ years to buy Tesla shares relatively cheaply and then see a significant increase in value when the product goes into mass production".
      In the comes days and weeks, the glass half full/empty nature of this event is likely to result in polarized views of how awful/excellent the event was.

    This tech will free up parking lots and make cities greener and more pedestrian friendly, but it will definitely not decrease the level of traffic jams. Quite the opposite. Transportation needs will not be less. The same amount of people will want to be on the way in every given moment as today. Probably even more if it is cheaper and decreses logistical barriers. If the vision is to exchange one public transport bus carrying 100 people by 50 robotaxis carrying two each, because it is cheaper and more individual, this will obviously increase the level of traffic jams by a lot.

      "...this will obviously increase the level of traffic jams by a lot." I agree and I don't, based somewhat on what date you're thinking of for your comparison. Tomorrow? Sure. Ten years from now... twenty? Not necessarily...
      I do agree with what I take as your underlying idea, though... single or double-passenger vehicles as our primary means of shuffling meat-bags around on the planet is just stupid. No question. With RoboTaxis (or autonomous vehicles in general) being a vast majority of the vehicles on the road, we'd have an obvious advantage (and HUGE safety improvement) over cars driven by mostly dumb-ass, self-absorbed, easily-distracted, short-tempered *people*.
      People in general can't (or, I guess, are just too selfish to) intelligently merge, maintain speed, change lanes, etc etc, and that major "Selfishness is good" human failing screws up traffic for everyone, and... in doing so... kills people. Kills people by making the seemingly simple act of going from Point A to Point B take vastly longer than it should, thus literally stealing life-cycles from each other. It's effing insane. Autonomous vehicles shouldn't have *that* problem.
      But yeah... to your point... independent of how much more efficiently autonomous vehicles can (overall) merge, maintain speed in traffic, and so on, one and two passenger versions don't fully address the problem of too many people being on the road at the same time.

      Robocabs will make individual transport cheaper and will make public transport more appealing as you would not have to deal with walking/parking your bike/car in order to get to/from a metro/train station. Thus fewer people might want to take their car the whole way to work - with the hassle with parking and last-mile walking that entails.
      Actually it might end up revitalising public transport and lessen congestion.

    We Robot was another over promise under deliver event for Musk. Musk is taking a chance with the lives of people riding tonight in the taxis. The FSD V12.5.4.1 is full of bugs. Today I had 2 critical intervention. I assume the taxis have the latest software but it’s not ready for prime time. Musk said FSD unsupervised will
    be in Texas and California in late 2025. So at least another year before software is ready.
    Today the 2 critical interventions were pulling out on highway 10 into 65-70 mph traffic it would of killed me with a T bone crash and failing to see a pickup truck taking a left turn in front of me. Almost a rear end collision.
    Non critical interventions today were extremely heavy braking and panic braking at freeway speeds and not centered in the lane.

      Making a robot that will do the things Musk says it will do, will not be possible for $30k anyway. Only people who know nothing about robotics will believe $30k is possible. Those are the same people who believed the initial $10k that Musk said this robot would cost the consumer. IF they would ever launch robots for 30k, it will just be an expensive toy that doesn't do what is promised right now. It will be in no way economically viable for the consumer.

    Waymo has at least 4 cities in the U. S. with autonomous vehicals for the last 2 years. By the time the first robotaxi is in the first city, Waymo will be doing this for 3 years and they are part of Google. They are fully autonomous now and will be upgrading all the way. As for Mr. Musk cost and time analysis, none of what he says today means anything. The price will be different and the time that these products will be ready for customers will be at another time. I expect at minimum Waymo will be 4 years ahead of Mr. Musk with major roll outs across the nation. As for autonomous robots, there is heavy competition from people who have better developed products.

    • @CiaranMcHale
      @CiaranMcHale Годину тому

      The latest I have read is that each Waymo robotaxi costs more than $100K. Apparently about $40K of this is the cost of the suite of sensors. Today, you can buy a Tesla car for less than half the cost of a Waymo car. This significant difference in up-front costs means that Tesla robotaxis could charge a much lower price-per-mile to customers and still be profitable, and if Waymo tried to match that low price, then Waymo would consistently make a loss on every trip.
      In addition, Waymo owns all the robotaxis in its fleet, so it Waymo tries to saturate the market with, say, 1 million robotaxis, that will cost Waymo a lot of money. In contrast, Tesla plans to let customer-owned vehicles take part in its robotaxi fleet, so Tesla could get, say, 1 million robotaxis on the road at a much lower cost.
      I agree that being first to market can sometimes offer a competitive advantage. But the "significantly cheaper to manufacture" advantage of Tesla opens the possibility that Waymo will own the robotaxi market until Tesla enters the market and then Tesla will suddenly leapfrog Waymo's market leadership. My plan is to open a bag of popcorn, sit back and enjoy watching events unfold. Whatever happens and whoever wins, I think it will be interesting.
