When I pitch, the same feeling I get in order to feel my hip hinge and rotation properly and not triple extend in my back leg ends up also resulting in my front knee bending after foot strike. However, my knee isn’t moving forward, it’s just a “sinking in” before my knee engages and springs back up. The motion is somewhat reminiscent to what Kyle Harrison from the Giants does with his front leg, and it seems like it would likely lose energy, but it’s not leaking forward or sideways like described in this video. Is this a major inefficiency, and would the “leaking” drills from this video help with it, or do I have a different issue?
As long as your knee isn't moving forward after foot strike you're not leaking energy through the front leg. It should also be mentioned that you don't really want it to move in the transverse plane as well.
I have a question that I can't really find an answer to. Growing up, I pitched on low-quality, low-budget, low-maintenance mounds. Basically after an inning or two, a sandy mess with two holes at the rubber and at the front foot strike area. I went over 9 years without pitching, and now I'm 28 in my second year pitching recreationally in China. Chinese mounds for amateurs are also low-quality and low budget. Growing up, I had all these problems with my knee collapsing, and I think it was because it was the only way I could stabilize my foot (rather than my leg). Seeing videos like this now, where I try to land correctly and pull over my front foot rather than letting my weight shift over it causing it to collapse, I find my front foot is constantly slipping, either on front foot strike or just before I release the ball. If I can't keep my foot stable while using it as an anchor because the mound is like a sandbox, is there any solution? When I lose that ground stability, I lose control completely and can hardly throw strikes. Is it a deeper problem with my mechanics or do I just need a better maintained mound?
