    Also the tuning for OCEAN, but that's got the capo on fret 4.
    Since first picking up a guitar and having a go at that song, this has been my favorite tuning by far.
    Thanks for sharing this, I've got a new song to work on now!

    I’m by no means comparable to John but I feel like we have a similar thought process, I don’t know shit when it comes to music theory I play what I feel and “what sounds good” to me and I guess I hinder myself and make learning slower but it gives me a good boost of confidence knowing John Buttler has some what a similar way of thinking 😅 when he said “I find and play patterns” I related a lot

    • @jasonstuart2815

      I assume that john when learning the guitar, would have learnt the basic chords on standard tuning long before he found his own patterns on that wacky tuning

    • @Browny84
      @Browny84 4 роки тому

      Jason Stuart I remember seeing him say somewhere that he started out playing grungy rock type stuff in standard tuning, then he inherited his grandpas dobro and couldn’t work out how to play it, then he stumbled upon open tunings and it opened up a whole new world.

    • @jimmy2shoes75
      @jimmy2shoes75 4 роки тому

      Well there is something magical about not knowing the theory, and just feeling whats right, over time you do develop your own thought process on what scales and so on. I started on DADGAD from day one and this for me was interesting and fun from day one. Now I play Open G Open C and lately I have been playing standard which I actually enjoying a lot. The cool thing about this process is that the tendency to learn other songs and just keep jamming on nice tunes that come out these tunings.

    I understand you so much more than most musicians. I'm the same way, the patterns and what frets I should hit and when not to hit them. Like, I understand why I'm not hitting them but then other people go far into detail and I'm just like "Woah buddy, I'm here for a good time not a long time." Because I personally don't need music theory to understand what I'm doing. I believe music theory is for people who need a lot of reminders for everything. Idk about you, but I read a tab and play a song twice and come back the next day and I have over half of it memorized already. I want to get a 12 string because they sound so sweet, but I'm not really sure where to start learning. Then again.. The thing about music is you don't always have to learn, sometimes you just let loose and let your heart play the strings 😁

    • @venomoussloth5092
      @venomoussloth5092 4 роки тому +3

      Theory is pretty cool imo, but not everybody has to like it. There have been plenty of people who didn’t know any theory and composed/wrote beautiful songs by feeling everything out. That being said, music theory isn’t just reminders. It’s a deeper way of understanding music. Once you know theory, you don’t have to look at the tab, you can recognize progressions and scales and modes and see what options you have and how far they can be stretched. It’s weird. The more rules you know, the more free your music becomes.

    He's knows more theory than he thinks, Just has difficulty explaining it with words. I don't think he needs to study theory to understand what he is doing, he needs to understand the vocabulary around theory. Just speculating, but there is more knowledge about theory in that mans head than he will give himself credit for.

    • @multifacetedman
      @multifacetedman Рік тому

      Might that be a "double-stop"? A two-note "chord" that's abbreviated/selected from a larger chord, like what Jimi does? My best guess..

    3:23 John does that in so many songs. I've wondered what that's called too

    • @guitarpro
      @guitarpro  4 роки тому +2

      It's called a Hammer On. 😉

    • @LoungeFly02
      @LoungeFly02 4 роки тому +1

      @@guitarpro But it's not a hammer on. you're talking about what he's doing with his left hand. I'm talking about the combination of the first and second notes and how quick they're played with his right hand. It's the quick little finger flip thing he does that plays two notes rapidly, the first note being a 1/32 note or something quick like that. Usually written in tab with a small number right next to a big normal sized number indicating the small number is played very quickly. He does this in many songs, and many require a very quick pluck of two strings rather than being succeeded by a hammer on, therefore, I've always wondered what the technical term of that move is.

    • @guitarpro
      @guitarpro  4 роки тому +3

      @@LoungeFly02 I see what you mean yes, it's called a "grace note" then.

      He says he's hitting two notes, I would call that pinching if I was to describe it to someone. Happens a lot with Travis picking for example.
