I also thought that was an amazing quote and it has helped me to make OCEAN more my own... There are some parts where the rhythm just doesn't quite jive with me perfectly and I like to do it differently. Glad to get encouragement on that from John himself!
The thing with John is that once he starts playing something, gets into it, starts bobbing his head..yeah lessons over. He’s just gonna jam out for a bit 😂 I love this man so much
Important note is that you’ll really want to have a solid Travis picking base to even attempt this. Once your thumb can move effortlessly like a metronome, then give it a go.
John Butler Trio I love this and thanks for sharing your knowledge. I know its hard to explain how to do these things but you say it exactly how I understand it so thank you :D
Took me about half an hour to get the picking right.. still pretty hard to make it natural in the hand, still a very good and useful technique. Thanks for the lesson :)
Love this tuning. I have my resonator permanently tuned in open G these days (low E to G). Going to try this great alternative. Oh to be as talented as Mr Butler.
Woooooow I love this tuning combined with this scale!!!!! Thx to this channel and of course to John. Greetings from germany!!!! Thank you But it took me really sum time to get this f...kin pickin tech😝
When does he play the open E string (D in the tuning) in the pattern? Seems pretty irregular and he didn't show it in the beginning. Anyone please? ;-)
Jeremy Schmetterer actually thats not true, theres a video he put up on his page in a question/answer sort of thing where he explains that his nails are completely fake and gets them done at a nail place before tours
I was lucky enough to get to meet him after a gig last night and had a quick chat about nails! he said he always uses acrylic nails on all fingers (although occasionally not on the pinky).
John doesn't wanna be there she's walked into the wrong room looking for guitar lessons for beginners everyone's embarrassed but doesn't want to say anything, caméra man handed his notice in after this
nah dude, I'm shit and I've got this one down. It does bend your brain while learning the picking pattern, but the motif actually is a natural fit for it once your not thinking about the right hand anymore
¨Actually better if don't learn it exactly right and you do it your own way¨ I love this guy.

John makes it look so easy
that moment at 16:06 when when hes like guitar, you are now A BANJO!
A million thanks, John Butler!

This is my fav thing to play, love ya john
Playing this was groundbreaking for me - I didn't know I could access this... Thanks so much guys.

Thank you Mr. John Butler

Just realized he's wearing a Wyoming shirt. He is now officially my favorite artist.

Thanks so much bro. I can't wait till we do some time together. 🙏
Anyone having fun with this tuning should also check out the song Losing You as it is the same one...
It's also quite beautiful and fun
Love this tuning. I have my resonator permanently tuned in open G these days (low E to G). Going to try this great alternative. Oh to be as talented as Mr Butler.
A split screen on LH + RH would be super (more) helpful for those closeups
Man open G with that low C ..IIll be onto that picking pattern .. cheers those shapes are kool as
Genius!
rocking the wyo shirt!
Me and the interviewer are just like laughing and holding a guitar hoping we don't have to actually play.
Woooooow I love this tuning combined with this scale!!!!! Thx to this channel and of course to John. Greetings from germany!!!! Thank you

woulda been good to get an interviewer that can play guitar
Aggghhh, I need help with the section he explains at the end with the g scale. Any tabs?
One note is that the first pluck of D and B strings has moved to G and D with a hammer on 2nd fret.
I think....
why does she have a guitar?
I'm interested in his guitar, it's like an SRS70J with rosewood or blackwood back and sides. Anybody have any details on the build?
John Butler plays australian Maton Guitars I think
this is group is great
I need to buy a guitar right now.
get a Rogue Dreadnought for like 89 dollars, go to a guitar shop after u get one, and u'll be set, i have one, for my first, is awesome.
Just when I have the picking pattern down, I loose it. This is gonna take a while lol
When does he play the open E string (D in the tuning) in the pattern? Seems pretty irregular and he didn't show it in the beginning. Anyone please? ;-)
He plays it instead of the B string on the final pluck in the pattern.
He also gets the same note at the end of the video with 3rd fret B string.
( 16:04 ) does anyone know how to break down that prat ??? Anyone ? Anyone ...? plz ... ? :D
souf Suuure that would be great ... !!
well :D it seems like everyone is in trouble with that picking !
open tuning is not cheating, it is a different method. John has essentially mastered open c and open g, and probably open e.
and open D for all the ladies ;)
Wow
What is the guitar he's using anybody have any ideas?
this chick had no clue what was going on
5:43 hahaha
haaha - but I actually loved that she was there so I didn't feel so stupid
What are on John's nails? Are they glued on or something?
Yes
Who gave her a guitar
which model is that Maton?
maton SRS70
he didnt tell us what to do with the high E !!!! and he does play it!!!!
How do you explain musicalo genius?
Gabrielle Aplin How do you feel today anyone ?
Are his nails real?
Yup like most classical players, John grows his out
It's cause in his Ocean 2012 studio version video he is wearing fake nails. Was just curious. But thanks :)
Oscar Axe actually he is using a combination of fake nails topped with acrylic
Jeremy Schmetterer actually thats not true, theres a video he put up on his page in a question/answer sort of thing where he explains that his nails are completely fake and gets them done at a nail place before tours
I was lucky enough to get to meet him after a gig last night and had a quick chat about nails! he said he always uses acrylic nails on all fingers (although occasionally not on the pinky).
Would be useful to play the song first so I know what I am supposed to be learning!
+King Robert would be useful to listen to the song before watching a tutorial on a song you havent heard?
John doesn't wanna be there she's walked into the wrong room looking for guitar lessons for beginners everyone's embarrassed but doesn't want to say anything, caméra man handed his notice in after this
his accent is cool, Australian-y American....
No acoustic nation, this is not a great lesson for beginners and intermediate level players, this shit is advanced as fuck.
I've only been playing for 3 years and this is quite easy for me
i been playing 3 months and i can play this but not as clean, its all practice dude
Its very easy to play compared to ocean on a 12 string guitar
playing for 4 days now. It's actually pretty good for beginners^^. Got almost everything together. But i need to play it cleaner tho...
nah dude, I'm shit and I've got this one down. It does bend your brain while learning the picking pattern, but the motif actually is a natural fit for it once your not thinking about the right hand anymore
aww im sorry john, im like your wife learning this on the go
This is like the master ball cheat on Pokemon red
does this chick have a clue lol?
