This song is something else for me. Stumbled across the OG version while in college 16 years ago when I was lost and trying to figure out life. Listened to it constantly and would always drift away on the waves of the song to a place of calmness and peace. Through all those years and hearing the evolution of the song; I am always taken back to that place - the journey there has changed meaning over time, but the destination is always inner calm. Thank you for sharing.
Mee too mate, I remember John butler ocean being on UA-cam when porn was still a thing on UA-cam. I'm pretty sure if you typed guitar into UA-cam ocean was on the first page
Same here. This was something I listened to when I had my heart broken all those years ago and ultimatley leading up to finding my wife. Sadly, last month we called it quits - she had met another man and I am back on my own. And back to this song. Hope it can heal me again.
one of the things i love the most about his renditions of Ocean is that he never plays it the same way as he did the previous time. That shows that it owns a special place inside his body and mind,
It's because he has worked on this piece more or less his entire musical life, starting when he lived on the street busking. It changes tune and feeling as his life changes flavor. It's truly a remarkable piece of music!
I have loved this song for so long, I've covered it when no one knew what it was, I watched my wife walk down the isle to it. It's the most beautiful song I've ever heard and it never has to speak a word.
A comment on the original version of this song states this song as "a 12 minute guitar song where a man tells his entire life story without words"; This version brings in a new perspective of that man's life with all the wisdom experience, ups & downs, joy and sadness and growth that came 16 years since the Ocean OG. Thank you John Butler for sharing your gift to the world!
I can’t get enough of this insanely amazing and beautiful Masterpiece. I just can’t ever get enough of it. It is hands down the best guitar part ever created. And I love the fact that every time he plays it live it’s a slightly different version. Just beautiful.
It's ironic that this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written & most folks have never been blessed to hear it! The original has been my fav for 14 yrs, but this version is so nuanced & wise. Magic 🫶
Kind of similar. It might be my favourite song of all time (definitely top5), but I can't listen to it daily or weekly or I'm afraid it might diminish its meaning to me. I like to revisit it every once in a while, close my eyes and just reflect on my life and imagine my future. Just like I wouldn't want to watch my favourite movie too often, I want to savor a song like this and not overplay it. Like you said, it's not just a song, it's a whole experience and a journey.
I watched jbt a t Beale st. Festival years ago and forever changed my life. In a way I cannot explain. I started playing guitar and learned ocean then progressed to other songs. They changed many things in my life for many years.
Heard this first time during college days like 11-12 years back.. and it has been magic. I feel blessed to gave listened to this piece, and i bet ive seen every version of this on YT; and it never stops lifting you up from within. Thank u John Butler for this magic.
This song make me think about my grandfather. He played guitar for 50+ years and now he has Parkinson and can't play anymore. He used to be up every morning picking little tunes on his guitar similar to some of the rythyms and picking we hear in this. It moves me to tears constantly. I absolutely love this. Thank you for posting this. And thank you John Butler for being an amazing musician.
Have you played this for him? I bet he'd love to hear this and Joe Satriani "surfin with the aliens" Eric Johnson, and of course Steve Vai. Follow it up with Little Wing (Stevie Ray Vaughan version) and you'll probably make his day many times over.... just guessing; these are my favorites
best version i've heard of this love the extended intro if you close your eyes and just listen you could be forgiven for for thinking this was a song from an alien life form with 25 fingers on each hand ;) magical
I've listened to this song a thousand times. Since you still had dark hair....lol. you're f'ing awsome....the passion you show while you're playing is off the charts.
That's also MY HUSBAND everyone! Loved his music since I was 18! And had a massive crush- on my own husband!!😂😂😂😂 even took awful friends and exes especially to see him play music live in London 😂😂 2 times. 😂😂❤ the surprises keep happening ❤❤❤❤
It's so sick that he mutes certain overtones by palming the guitar body to make it feedback at different frequencies and makes the string rattle. Bro is cooking infinite.

The sound when he hammers on that low string 😮❤
By far one of the best reenactments of the song of the waves in the middle of the thunderstorm of life. Thank you.
i only listen to this song like twice a year... but it's always an experience, man.

Bellissimo!!!🎸😊🎼❤️✌️
этот шедевр заставляет меня плакать каждый раз, при прослушивании.
He played it on a 12 string with 11 strings and still managed to get a perfect tune. Great job John Butler. I tip my hat to you!❤

When you can close your eyes and be taken on a journey.
Not me reading the whole story abt dusty in the 2012 version and slowly weeping😢
?
From the first time I heard this song over a decade ago, I've always called it acoustic sex or acoustic orgasm. It still holds true.
John Butler never gets the credit he deserves. One of the worlds great guitarist. Wake up Australia dont ignore him because of his political views.
Fucking beautiful
You will never get over Square Garden day...
🤙
This song was WRITTEN in 1996!!!!
02:40 the build up to the beat... awesome
Ocean is like Van Halen's Eruption, only in drawn out opus form. A master at his craft. Thank you, John.

Everybody yelling during the song should have their vocal cords removed.
bruv, relax.. it's a fkn concert
I'm sure he appreciates the love and support lmao
You are right but it's so difficult to stay calm all along without expressing emotions
