The Verve discarded South Pacific from their debut album A Storm In Heaven. I reckon that song would have taken them somewhere long before Bittersweet. Give it a listen, such a beautiful song. Can’t believe they left it off the album.
@@simoneburini4036 by "back in the day" you mean the 60s? Because nobody was intentionally leaving off their best songs from albums in the 90s for the sake of a B side. They were usually songs that didn't make the cut because of their quality or the sound didn't fit the rest of the album.
I love the song, but I think it would have been perfect on The Bends and kind of out-of-place on OKC. I always figured that was their reasoning for leaving it off
@@IdlesQueenthe more involved i get in this community the more i’ve realized how much electioneering is disliked and i don’t get it. it’s a good song c’mon 😭
@@whyisntitpossible404as someone reaching my 40’s, it really hits hard actually. Makes me very reminiscent of the older days. Just stuck in a lift, day by day. It’s all we are. Great and poignant song.
Surprised Lift and Man Of War were cut from OK Computer, then I remember how good OK Computer is and understand that if those two songs were in and two original songs were out, we would still have this conversation.
They kind of did the same to Videotape. Originally it was a huge stadium piano rock song, you could feel its potential in every live recording. So they toned it down and turned it into an intimate closer.
I've always felt that this is the same train of thought that made them not put "Down Is The New Up" on In Rainbows. It's the kind of song that could have become something bigger than what they wanted.
Lift would be a really great song if replaced with Electioneering, i think it would suit with the theme of album , considering in my opinion Electioneering is a full length rock song talking about, electioneering
but i agree with Ed, OK Computer talks about mass consumerism, capitalism, social and modern alienation , and without Electioneering, i think the album wouldnt mean anything too.
Yeah it definitely sounds like a song that could have ruled the 1990's sort of like 1979 or sth along those lines. I think that given how they hated being famous, they did the right thing not to release the song but it is a damn good one they chose not to release.
My theory is that Lift could have replaced Lucky since they both sound like a nice lead into The Tourist. It would have felt more like a concept album like The Wall with Thom being rescued from the Lift's isolation and into The Tourist with a new outlook on life to slow down and take the world in. Just my opinion though
i liked this decision to keep Lift out, because, i mean, it would sound a little bit out of place, sounds more like a The Bends song. I really love this song, but I think Ok Computer is perfect just the way it is
It just wasn't good enough and didn't fit in OK Computer. They were past the Bends sound (except for Electioneering i guess), and that's what most OKC b-sides sounded like.
OK Computer is already 53:21 As good as a lot of these songs are - OK Computer was enough to digest on it's own. Bands almost always have an additional 50-100% of an album worth of additional material that doesn't make the record. It's about creating a sequence that's more than a sum of the individual songs.
thom yorke himself has described this period as a bad time. even though hes brilliant im sure it still affected him creatively. i still dont get how i promise was also cut.
Personally I think they made the right choice. I don't see what other people see in this song AT ALL. It doesn't surprise me that Ed sees it the way he does. I think they left it off the record because they knew it wasn't at the level of the rest of the songs on the album. Lift is nowhere near as mature as pretty much every other song on that album. "Lighten up squirt"??? The lyrics are just a completely different style and tone than the lyrics on every other song on that album. Lift's lyrics are more direct and less layered and just not as deep as the rest of the lyrics. It's lyrics are less expansive in the scope of what's being talked about. And the music of that song is also much less deep and much, much less interesting than everything else on that album. Lift being a b-side is completely as it should be in my opinion. Sometimes I think Radiohead fans really deeply want Radiohead to be more "normal" than they are or than they want to be. It's the only thing that makes sense of the fact that so many people think In Rainbows is their best album and that it's so amazing. It's just their most accessible album. That's basically it. I like the album, and love a lot of the songs on it, but King Of Limbs and A Moon Shaped Pool are FAR more interesting to me than In Rainbows. And Lift is much more of a traditional, accessible song than most of what's on Ok Computer. I think it would've tainted the album. It's not a bad song. I enjoy some things about it. But it doesn't stand out to me in any way other than the fact that Yorke is exceptional as an artist. His expression is deep and affecting. But the song itself.. well, it's a b-side, to me.
I loved Radiohead until I found out they were occupation apologists and now genocide apologists. When Yorke gave the finger to people who support BDS he gave the finger to most of the people on the planet: I hope everyone learnswhat Karma Police was really about!
the songs literally about being stuck in a lift which can be taken literally with the whole technology thing while also being a metaphor for being stuck in life its kinda perfect for okcomputer

Imagine discarding a song because it's too good. Only Radiohead could do that
The Verve discarded South Pacific from their debut album A Storm In Heaven. I reckon that song would have taken them somewhere long before Bittersweet. Give it a listen, such a beautiful song. Can’t believe they left it off the album.
Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar did that, too. I hate them because they discard good songs... but I still love them with all my heart.
They didn't discard it because it was too good.
Back in the day that was a thing. You wanted to leave some good songs out of the album and then use them as B sides for singles.

There's this studio quality alternate version of lift from the OKC sessions that was leaked on the Minidiscs. it's just perfect
I have all the minidiscs. "Lift alternative version mix 1" is my favorite. Harder, louder than the video version.
They didn’t put it on album because they’re afraid it’s gonna be a banger, wow… 👏👏👏
But Paranoid Android ended up being a banger and charted very well with the media saying it was a modern Bohemian Rhapsody at the time.
Radiohead is the band of whom even removed songs sound so good.
I love lift. I think it is my favorite Radiohead song.i was always so sad that it didn't have a studio recording

One of my top 10 favourite Radiohead tracks
has shades of Smashing Pumpkins (to me)- So GLAD it was NOT on Ok Computer, it doesn't feel abstract enough.

It sounds a lot like Mayonnaise by the Smashing Pumpkins
Okay but why was Man of War cut from OK Computer?
Great video

better question: why were all the songs cut from ok computer? like man of war, or lull, lift, etc.

The simpler answer is that it’s actually pretty weak. Bland pop-rock of little consequence.
