  • I'm a great believer in fate...
I was considering picking up a San Martin or Steeldive watch to see if breaking the £100 barrier got you a better homage, by chance one of you loyal subscribers pointed me in the direction of SteeldiveUK, the result is today's unboxing and review.
If you're a fan of the Captain Willard or any other Steeldive watch and based in the UK or Europe then feel free to use the following link and order from SteeldiveUK. Be sure to use the discount code 'lastwatch5'
If you are an international customer then I would suggest you contact Matthew directly about shipping costs before you order. Be sure to mention LastWatch in any communication, it may persuade Matthew to send me another watch for review.
Ordering from SteeldiveUK will save you £5 on your purchase using the discount code, there is no benefit to me, just an added bonus for you viewers

27 September Update - I couldn't let it go, I've enjoyed wearing the 1970 so much that I decided to pay for the watch and keep it in my collection... Matthew did offer a small discount.
The only weakness I can see so far with the SD-1970 is the bracelet, especially with regards to the end links which could do with some better finishing. I am usually a bracelet guy but I think the Steeldive is crying out for a waffle style rubber strap, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have four of these Steeldive 1970's. Absolutely the favourite design among all my watches, and I have a LOT. There's something about the overall design that is just mesmerizing, turtle, round and square shapes in a fantastic mix, I just love it.
I have the black dial, green dial, blue, and a black/bronze and a variety of silicone rubber and leather straps for variation.
The accuracy of the ones I got is from -3 secs a day to +3 secs a day, pretty awesome actually.
    Thanks for the video 👍🌟🌟🌟

Matthew is the most honest person i've ever ordered from. I ordered this same watch for €140, a couple of days before the brexit and the watch arrived on 2/1/2021. The courier called me from the customs and asked me another €150 !!! I did not receive the watch and Matthew returned me not only the cost of the watch, but also the shipping cost. That's Matthew.

I've had one for about 5 months. Love the watch. I have Seiko divers ( Arnie, Tuna, Samurai, a Save The Ocean Turtle and the new King Turtle) . This watch has become my go-to weekender. Can't go wrong for the money. It's a lot of watch for it's price point. A bonus feature is that is watch is a strap monster. I've had it on black and brown vintage leather, nato and Zulu straps of all colors. It looks great on just about all color variations. It's on an Uncle Seiko waffle strap as I write this.

    • @LastWatch

    • @oktc68

Ain't that the truth! I have a tropical rubber strap, a waffle and a good quality olive green nato (which it looks fantastic on) but I did a lot of filing on the original bracelets end links and rebrushed them so that they fit perfectly and added a milled clasp, while I do think it looks great on the previously mentioned straps I also like it on the bracelet. I bought a Miltat bracelet which I'm going to mod to accept the end links that came with the watch (hopefully) but to be honest it looks the same as the original which after a few months is still absolutely fine and if modding the Miltat proves difficult, I have no problems keeping it on the original bracelet. I recently bought a Seiko Solar Tuna and whilst in store was able to handle the Prospex Captain Willard and you know what? I don't think it's any better than the Steeldive, looked a bit smaller but the SD1970 looks nicer (looks like it's older, with the slightly yellowed lume) I still can't believe what a fantastic bargain it is. The bezel action is also nicer than the Seiko's, in my opinion anyway. (Same with the Steeldive Tuna and Seiko Tuna-Lite which feel very similar but I have to say I think the Steeldive's has the edge) I really like Seiko's designs but I think that they're overpriced and under specced, Hardlex simply won't do when you can get sapphire with AR coating, and is a ceramic bezel insert really to much to expect at Seiko's prices? When there are so many watches with these features that have Seiko's excellent NH35A movement in them, there seems to be little reason to buy a Seiko. Trouble is that Seiko seem content with the way things are, perhaps they have enough people who are happy to spend £1,200 on a Prospex Captain Willard?

After watching this review you inspired me to check out the range Matthew offered and he had sold out of this Captain Willard type so I purchased the SD1953, I had an issue with fitting of the mechanism and it wouldn’t hack and stopped depending what way the watch was placed. He had excellent communication and super quick delivery and he happily replaced it for another and it’s been working perfectly. Will definitely buy off him again as he now has this SD1970 back in. Ended up being a costly video for me to watch as I’m gonna end up buying a second watch from him shortly.

Mine just arrived today from AliExpress, it had the metal band but no 2nd rubber band, also mine was stamped with the Steeldive logo. I'm in Australia & the watch cost me $114 AU & came a full 7 days before their predicted delivery date so I'm pretty happy, the only down point is it was supposed to have the anti reflective coating & mine dosn't appear to have it as it is missing that blue tint on the edge of the glass, but that's about it. It did come with the tool to adjust the band, but I already had a watch repair kit but it was a nice touch & damn it is a solid bugger lol, I recomend it as the price for what you get is very good.

if you look at the macro shot of the 6 o clock marker in the video at 10:39, when you look at the bottom corners of the marker and you compare that with the 29 and 31 minute markers, it does look like there is a small alignment issue. I'm looking at this watch very carefully as I have ordered one and now can't stop watching online reviews of it.
This is such a small issue and with the naked eye, probably not even visible but still worth pointing out. For the price of this watch I feel like that is minor and can and should be forgiven. I mean you can't expect perfection at this price. Still a really good buy!!

Didn't know about Steeldive UK but I purchased this a couple of weeks ago. No rush to get it so the delay is irrelevant (as long as it isn't ridiculous).
I don't really care about the brand, I just want a watch that keeps time, looks nice and doesn't need winding constantly. Smartwatches get a hall pass for winding, and battery life, obviously.
The Steelcase 1970 (with the no logo option) will suit me fine, I am sure.

These are great watches. I remember you saying you had ordered the sub too at a reasonable price.
Perhaps a video option would putting that against the PD hulk. Think the Steeldive would win.
Might be worth asking Matthew for a Tuna to review SD1975. These are £134.99 and look like a substantial watch but decent lugwidth making them wearable for most wrist sizes.

As you said, the wearability of the Steeldive is just great. It is very comfortable. The extra 1mm of diameter makes it for me. I had the SPB237, I think it shares the same case and case size as the 151. I like the proportions of the Steeldive better, though the same thickness, it appears less squat and not as thick as the newer Seikos. The Steeldive just sits more comfortably and looks better on my wrist. Warranty and bracelet are pretty much givens, and as you say, the watch, the head itself has some weight. So onto a silicone or rubber it goes, you can't expect much of a bracelet or warranty at this price and from the other side of the world. I'd expect great inconvenience with any warranty service though. I work hard for my money, but losing $100 will not solve my problems.
Really enjoyed your review and checking out some others, influencing my purchases. It’s really great that you can get great pleasure and fun from a watch while paying so little. I am truly enjoying this every bit as much as the Rolexs, Omegas, Grand Seikos that I have owned.

I bought the green one from AliExpress. It's an absolutely fabulous watch. I got it from the Steeldive store and it was under £70. It really is pointless buying a Seiko or even a Heimdallr homage for more money when this has a perfectly good Seiko movement and is beautifully finished. Just a footnote, I think Addies Dive are the same company. They both seem to be trying to build a brand reputation and aren't rip off merchants. I got the extra csse candy too and I didn't buy from the UK outlet which is not to say that I won't. I'm now checking out videos as to what makes Heimdallr or Proxima any different if at all in a watch with like for like movement, lume, sapphire crystal and case construction (obviously bronze will cost a little more). Honestly it's difficult to see without actually seeing one how a San Martin could be any better. It probably is just maybe the others are over pricing.

My SD1970 came with a minor qc issue; The six o'clock index marker is slightly rough around the edges. But since it's barely visible I chose not to hassle with returning it to China, refunds etc. Otherwise, I love it and it's such great value for the money IMHO considering the Seiko's most "affordable" reissue of this is around $1K if IIRC?
Funny thing is, when I shortened the bracelet I apparently was a bit sloppy as one pin popped out shortly after (and of course disappeared). Since I've already had a waffle strap ready for this one, I instantly put that on. Though I liked the bracelet for what it was, it feels like this watch looks better with a waffle strap (or a "chocolate bar" strap, which I believe Sheen actually had?), and I've kept it ever since.

Are Steeldive UK not just the same as those on Aliexpress, but £60 more? I'm happy to wait 3 weeks to save money.

    • @LastWatch
      @LastWatch  3 роки тому

Yes, its the same brand, same watch, personal choice who you want to do business with. There was very little in price difference when I posted the review.

I got my Willard from Longfield Chrono, also in the UK. Steeldive UK also have an agreement with San Martin. The watches are not on the website but they are available from Matthew on eBay. I bought a retro diver sn004g from there and while the watch was fine and he agreed to sending next day delivery the tools that were supposed to come with the watch were missing. I left a message but never got a reply. 🤷‍♂️

Been thinking about getting one of these, but also a regular Turtle is not much more money. I am a bit split about which to pick up.

Get an authentic Seiko turtle. Yeah, you don't get sapphire or ceramic (unless you go for the "king" turtle) but it's so worth it having the original.

Wondeerfull! Now only if Alpha-1993 would up scale their own watches a little more. It looks like the back pattern was engraved by machining, but it's probably stamped, so take it off and look at the other side to tell?
