it is a quiz today, and one that you have to answer for yourself. I honestly reckon that most of the parts are shared across ALL of these 6105 homages. Does that mean the cheapest is the best? Quite possibly. I'd be going for black next time though, easier to mod. Cheers, Jody.

Mine seem better quality than similarly priced Seikos. Of course, you can get better Seikos, but at the low end these Chinese watches are better.
I have just received black one, and let me tell you, it's great. It really exceeded my expectations, anti-reflection coating is not blue, clasp is upgraded and it's better than the one you bought afterwards, with 6 positions for adjustment and very good finish. Endlinks are fitted properly, ceramic bezel insert is perfect, and no complaints about bezel action. It seems that manufacturer is listening suggestions from reviewers and customers. Movement is working fine. I really recommend this watch. Thanks Jody for your interesting and honest videos 👍

Good for you! I bought an original SEIKO after this experience and not a copy. Happy to have a turtle that work and not a broken watch.

China is the world's unsung hero. They've raised the standard of living for everybody by producing all the affordable products you buy on amazon. And they keep western companies in check when they undercut them and flood the market with cheaper alternatives that are still decently made. As a consumer I appreciate China.

Bought this on a steel bracelet, august 2024. 59 euros including shipping.
The endlinks are solid now, the clasp is milled, and the blue AR coating has been replaced with clear coat. Mine runs at a very decent -3 seconds per day. However, on my Steeldive the lume isn't as good as every review claims it is. It burns bright yes, but after 40 minutes it's gone completely. It doesn't come close to my Citizen Ecodrive or Seiko SKX, which last the entire night fully charged. Overall though, great watch! Well worth the money, and better than more expensive watches I own.
Just got my 1970 yesterday and I love it! My clasp had the branding on it!

Got myself one for Christmas. If anyone is wondering, on the blue one the colours do match. Some people hate that version cause it's the most flashy but I'm not actually Cpt. Willard patrolling through Vietnam so who cares.
The only downside is that end-link construction. I can live with the clasp, but changing the bracelet is a nightmare, I outright managed to BEND the SOLID end-link! If you opt for the bracelet better never take it off.
Had mine off to polish up the horrific machining on the end links. If you tidy all that up with a diamond file it will go back together much easier.
This sort of watch has destroyed any interest I used to have in "luxury" watches, it just shows how cheap and easy any watch is to make in reality.

To be fair, they’re not making a watch, but they are copying one someone else made.
They didn’t make the movement, as Seiko have done, and they haven’t had to make the watch from scratch as Seiko have done.
Giving the ‘copiers’ the same credit as the originators is like saying a cover band’s version of a song is as good as the original performers’ version. Blazing a trail is a lot easier if someone has already drawn a map for you.
Mine arrived yesterday and I’m very impressed with it. My first steeldive and I can’t believe the value for money on offer here. I had the good sense to buy the black one. Always good to hear a nice review of something you’ve already purchased. Cheers Jodie

I was expecting good but this watch is the dogs diamonds...changed over from bracelet to rubber, supplied with a re-bar and upgraded pins, nice...I have wrists like greyhound but I can't resist a big kettle...it sits beautifully!
Only negative is that I can't help but wonder how the costs can be kept so low. It means we accept that that the savings have a human cost.
It's the price we pay...sobering thought.

Not really. Economies of scale. This is not the kind of production where such labor is deployed. As well, many of these factories are contract manufacturers for western micro brands...who may inspect the TPM for its labor practices. Sure, the wages are extremely low compared to western wages, but typically competitive for the local market. The biggest cost driver being the SII NH35A mechanism itself...made in Malaysia.

I've just bought one of these direct from Aliexpress China - ￡ 108.82 all in (free shipping). It arrived in the UK today! (7 days from date of order). I ordered with rubber strap as the standard bracelet is poor. It didn't come with any pin tools or any other accessories other than a blank warranty card and instruction manual (English). The watch is beautiful - no apparent manufacturing issues whatsoever.
the upgraded clasp you put on this is better than my new longines hydroconquest clasp by a mile.

Absolutely the best watch out there for the price. I have the blue one and it is unbelievably accurate and everything lines up. I can't complain. The sunburst dial is amazing.
Same, no QC issues on mine either. I went for the green version (US$112) and paired it with a MAIKES stitched/dark-brown leather strap with deployment clasp ($18). I just alternated after 2 weeks from the SD 1970 to the Aragon Divemaster 42 (Black dial/black ceramic bezel/NH36A; $149) also paired with a MAIKES leather strap (black with white stitching; $18). These are my current daily drivers...I retired my other two favorites for special occasions, since the sapphire/ceramic/S.S. materials on the aforementioned watches make for more rugged use. After spending $1000 on a Rolex 16613 maintenance (after 19 years of routine use), I am more careful given its alu bezel. Same for a Glashutte Senator, with gold case. Softer metals...more easily scratched.
The above daily drivers, with SII NH 35/36 resp., are very accurate and offer incredible value IMO. Not every watch needs to be investment grade to be considered a damn good watch!

My black-dial version arrived yesterday, and I am impressed. I opted for the no-logo dial and a rubber strap. If you go "no logo," they take it seriously: my model has the Steeldive logo only on the strap. Otherwise plain dial, unsigned crown, and sterile case back.

I got this over Christmas so for my birthday I'm going to go with the Steeldive bronze 50 fathoms homage and pick it up in the March Aliexpress sale.
I picked one up and I was so impressed I went out and bought two more Steeldives, the 1954 subby no date and the 1979 squale clone. Pretty amazing watches for the money.

Recently acquired one of these pieces (6-21). The lume is unbelievable in that the hands, indices and bezel are extraordinarily bright and legible in darkness 4+ hours after last exposure to light! I sure hope it's safe and my unadorned wrist doesn't end up glowing like the watch.! Seriously, a great piece well worth the price. It's comfortable, wears well and is very readable. 1 minute gain after 4 days. NH35 movement is superb!
I've just taken delivery of a San Martin Abalone in bronze with a green dial. It's fantastic. No back play at all in the bezel, really great leather strap and running well with tolerances for the NH35. A bit more than the Steeldive, but far less than the others mentioned here. How about a review Jody?

I bought this same green one on the wake strap. I’ve found every excuse to wear it because it’s so comfortable, disappears on the wrist and I think the green tones look great.
I always thought the logo looked like a mad duck! 😉
Hulloooo, Just got my 1970 delivered (in 10 days!) for £73 in the 11/11 sale. Pleased to report it now comes with a stainless milled double clasp with 6 microadjusts. Also the end links are now flush with no gaps and are nicely finished. Keep up the great channel.
Great review! I'm happy with my black one. A friend bought the Heimdaler, and while I like the logo better, and the case brushing is a bit smoother, it lacks the lumed bezel, which I really like and has a unsigned crown. I paid $98 for my Steel Dive on a rubber strap and swapped it pretty quickly for a period waffle strap.

I'm lucky enough to own an original 6105-8119 from 1973 & these are great watches, very cool & something special about them. The Steeldive doesn't look bad, San Martin also do a decent homage as well. Something they all get wrong though is the colour on the seconds hand, the originals were never bright red, they were a reddish pink!
I like the bright red honestly at least on the green watch.
I was inspired by this video to look into buying the green SD70. Being on sale for only $70 CDN (about $50 USD), I snapped up the bargain. It arrived about 10 days ago and it lives up to the praise, Steeldive has upgraded to a milled clasp and that does address one of Jody's niggles.
Quality and build-wise, I think it compares very favorably to my Citizen chronograph, Casio Ediface and Invicta Pro Diver (quartz). Three years late to the party but am happy to join the chorus of those who think this is a very fine watch.
It's a great budget watch but I think the san martin is a real quality watch by itself, domed crystal, ceramic bezel, hacking and handwinding etc. The fit and Finish on mine is amazing, I returned the steel dive for the San martin and the difference was very obvious and a definate improvement. Also about the best bezel feel/action of any watch I own to include multiple seiko, 2 tag Heuer and a few Deep Blues's and even the citizen promaster diver which I found to be almost flawless. Just my two cents.
I just had this one delivered and it only took 8 days to arrive in Australia. It cost $90 Aussie dollars including taxes ($60USD) for the rubber waffle strap version. It has perfect dial and bezel alignment, all the indices are applied straight, no visible imperfections, the lume is all evenly applied. The bezel action is firm but smooth, with reassuring clicks and no backplay. It runs 2.5 s/day fast which is as good as accurate in my book. The rubber waffle strap is just OK. It is incredible quality - if the SteelDive didn't exist and I paid 3 times the price I'd still think I had got a bargain.
Got one since a month, on a waffle strap.
And although I find it weird to wear a diver in winter, it’s on my arm almost half the time. Unbelievable that you can get such a nice watch, for that little money.

I have bought and sold about 20 of these, and I must say, QC is pretty good.
Only one had a misaligned dial, some had a rough bezel action that was easily fixed with some silicone oil.
It seems to me that they do some decent regulation of the movements also, none was worse then +/- 5 seconds / day.
I can not say the same about my Seiko watches...

I did get one. Had it for about two weeks now. Seems to be good value and I like it. Taken it off the factory bracelet though. On a QR canvas strap which has made it more comfortable. Will likely get a silicon strap like I have on my seiko turtle.
@@fattuspattus canvas straps are my go to these days but a proper silicone is definitely a must for this watch.. with the seiko movement inside it's hard to complain unless they just fail to execute across the board haha

Hi Jody, I got the Sharkey version of the Willard. I saw a comparison with the Steeldive and the case sizes are not the same so it was determined that they come from diffrent factor I am very impressed by the Sharky. I have a skx007j, a Alpinist sarb017 and a Samurai STO but feel no loyalty to Seiko. They are no longer the peoples watch....

Hi Jody, another great vid! I have the black dial Addiesdive version. Completely agree that they start out in the same factory. I paid under £80 GBP (+£11 tax) which is outstanding value for money! My bracelet has same fit and finish issues, but watch looks great on a waffle or Tropic too!
Genuinely the only thing I would change on the black-dialed version of this watch would be the crystal. I wish it were domed. Heimdallr does a domed homage for about $20 more, but then you lose out on the lumed bezel. It's a pity.
And in a nod to Seiko, in my experience the Heimdallr watches don't align 😄

Indeed, the Heimdallr folder, 3-faceted brushed handset is better than the flat Steeldive one, for example.

I really like this one - will try to buy one this year, in green.
Bought one of these in April. Love it. I think it’s one of the nicest watches in my collection and that includes BB58, Aquaracer, Oris pointer date, divers65, Sinn 104 etc. Couldn’t believe the quality for the money. Makes me question why I spend £1500. Apart from “in house” movements it’s essentially the same spec sheet. 316l SS, ceramic bezel insert, sapphire glass, signed crown, great lume and everything lines up.
Jody tell them I'd love to apply as graphic designer to design their logo (steeldive, cronos, etc) 😂😂

The upside down logo is often referred to as " the angry ninja " .
I am honestly surprised by how good the logo looks thought. New san martin logo also looks so much better than just printing the name on the dial. The amount of watches on Ali with garbage logos and names are insane. Like who the fuck buys a rolex homage with AgeGirl on the dial? or BLWRX?? The amount of money some of these homage factories would gain in revenue if they paid a random design student 100£ and getting a real translator for their names/advertisements, holy.
The fake Rolex that have agegirl is not the logo. It says Rolex but they can't show that on AliExpress so on the pictures they have agegirl over the Rolex but in real life says Rolex
Just received the sterile version. Absolutely superb. The clasp is not however sterile but I have just ordered the 18mm milled clasp from Ali using your link. I may also get an Uncle Seiko waffle strap, which will mean Seiko is referenced somewhere! Thanks for the review and buying advice.
Love mine with one caveat. It’s my second one, First one badly failed a pressure test so had to have it replaced. Second one was fine. However might be a good idea to test your purchase if you plan on swimming with this one. Might be a good idea also to include a simple pressure test result on these cheaper divers? Just a thought! Nice review!
Ah, that sucks and been there. I originally had the steel dive and sent back to get the san martin. I dive, snorkel and surf and usually with a g shock just due to banging it on board, boat or the rocks. Been using the sanartin just as a torture test and so far so good. Have had it completely submerged for over an hour and most of that atndepths of 60 to 80 feet, deep enough to use nitrox. I can't find a better homage that is equal in quality as it is in looks.
I have the Steeldive Black Tuna, and I love it. Great video, look forward to many more of your videos.

@@3rdstone1 There is two. One is the Ocean Star (most well known one) and the other is a model 6057 I think (which I own). It is has a black pvd case and bezel like the Omega Planet Ocean Deep Black. Excellent quality and most legible diver I own and I can't believe no-one has reviewed it. 12mm thick. When on sale $250.

A bad experience with a Pagani ended my interest in Ali watches, but this one looks ok
I didn’t much enjoy my Pagani either. High on technical specs but overall a disappointing feeling watch with sharp edges on the bracelet and a very flat/cheap looking dial. But I’ve decided to give this Steeldive a go after hearing nothing but good things about them. If it doesn’t work out then it will be my last Ali watch. 🤞
@@alastairheptonstall7982 I had the dress Chrono that Jody reviewed a little while and I think still has in his collection. The crystal literally fell off within 5 minutes of wearing it.
Thought I’d just circle back and mention that I did purchase this Steeldive, and it is a completely different level of watch to Pagani. Maybe not quite the same level of case polish as my Seikos, but close. I can certainly highly recommend this one if you do want to risk another Ali watch.

Had one of these for a while (Black dial), been really happy with it. Not had the time to size the bracelet, probably more to the fact of those end links, but was supplied to me with three NATO straps which look great.
Really look forward to seeing a video about modding one of these, as have recently considered buying one of the other watches in their range SD1965 to mod myself

I have the CuSn8 bronze black dial version of this watch and I think that it's superb on a rubber waffle with matching buckle.
It also has BGW9 lume on the bezel, dial and brushed hands and combined with the polished indices works very well and makes for a more balanced look I think.
Timekeeping is excellent too, currently losing about 0 - 1spd doing a manual job and I am more than happy as it wears so comfortable.
It has been said that the inverted Steeldive logo looks a bit like an angry ninja too!

I have the black dial on the supplied black rubber strap. I absolutely love this watch! Extremely comfortable and holds the time dead on. Also, if you have a big wrist (or plan on wearing over a wetsuit), get the rubber strap with the square cutouts. I have a 7.25” wrist and I use the third hole from the inside. 5 more holes and about 1.5” room to expand.

I suggest the Orient Kamasu in the green version. Very nice. Subtle variations in the color depending on the lighting. I love mine.

@@juniorjohnson5961 My Orient Kamasu was around $200 or so (USD). I forget where I bought it. Long Island Watch has a few dive watches with gorgeous green dials, more like emerald green rather than military/army green. They are around $300.
I've had my Steeldive Willard for a couple months and like it. It has misaligned indices at 10 and 5 but I still like it.

I just received mine and, boy howdy, what an amazing value. These gorgeous lines, this LUME. The solid, tasteful heft of it, even on the waffle strap. Folks, I paid $69 USD for this puppy. Amazing. My first automatic watch, too!

I picked one up during the last AliExpress sale. For $86 delivered, I don't think you can do better. It looks fantastic and runs even better. I was going to swap out the clasp but decided to keep it as it is signed. The stamped clasp is the only weakness in my opinion. If Steeldive goes to a milled clasp, they will have the best budget diver of all time.
I think Seiko‘s best case is on the 62MAS; the 6105 case reminds me of a bloated corpse 😖

Amoeboid is a term I've heard bandied for Willard case shape. Which brings its own "don't drink the water" baggage.
I bought one of thesr about two years ago and still so happy I did. I went for the heimdallr (all black) since in my opinion their logo is just the best (applied shark). As said, I modded the bezelinsert and hands - just so cool!
