    If you're talking about the Sigma that is listed on my gear page via the link in this video's description, it's a good affordable lens. Shooting concerts might be a bit tricky because they tend to be low light. You'll get a 2.8 aperture which is pretty good and I've shot dark shows with it but I also like having a 1.4 aperture with me to get in more light. If you go to RayOrtega . com you'll see the most recent video (concert) I shot with the Sigma and a Canon 1.4. Thanks for watching!

    Thank you for a really watchable and useful video. So many UA-cam videos are either showcases for the presenter themselves or are simply annoying. Yours is informative, watchable and very useful. Thank you for posting.

    Sure it can come close but it's a subjective measurement. Your best option is to go over to Vimeo and type in this camera and then watch the "movies" that have been shot on it. If you like the look then you'll know how to proceed. Thanks for watching. If you do buy, please use the link in this video's description so I can keep making videos. Thanks again.

    I still love my 60D, I got it new all those years ago. I haven't used ot for a while, but thinking about it for UA-cam videos it's perfect as you don't need anything more.

    I don't have any experience with Nikon DSLR's however Canon has a whole line of affordable options. Check out the link in this video's description to my gear page where I list some of these options. Take a look at the T3i. All of these cams have the same sensor and thus quality. You are basically picking different options the cams give you. You can get an affordable kit with lenses for less than one 60D.

    Many many thanks! My 60 D was standing on the shelf and I did not know what to do with it. Planning to buy another camera for my YT channel. You solved it for me with your useful tips and links! The lens is a discontinued Sigma, it's listed in the video's description. But what my other videos where you'll see me use other lens with even better results. All the gear I use for each video is listed in each video's description. I use both Premiere Pro and FCP to edit my videos. Most editors will work fine. The key is light. Watch my videos that teach you how to setup your camera and then after that it's all about good lighting. Make sure you have enough.

    Thanks! The difference in the camera is the larger sensor and the interchangeable lenses. This is what produces the sharper video and blurry background look. Vixia's are good cams for lots of video work. You should shoot with it and see if you like the results. Look at other skateboard videos using DSLR's and see if you think they are comparable. Have fun!

  • @RayOrtega

    Ho Rose, thanks for the feedback. On the 60D you can't record any single clip longer than 12 minutes before you have to restart the recording. The camera shuts off around 12 minutes. See the video I made about it. I also made a video about SD cards that you can watch. Every video I do has links in the description with the gear I use and recommend. I like Transcend SD cards for price and quality.

  • @RayOrtega

    It just depends on what you need. The 60D and 70D are going to look pretty much the same. The 70D might look a little better but I haven't seen tests yet. But if you don't need auto focus then you can probably save some money and go with the 60D which has been my favorite budget cam for a long time. Buying from the links in this video's description helps me keep making videos. Thanks!

    If you use stabilized lenses, are the videos stabilized as well?
    Some lenses stabilize the image in the viewfinder, others don't. Do I need to upgrade to a L lens with IS to get stabilized videos?
    Thanks a lot, and excellent video as well.

    I've seen an issue where this happens. The fix is to reformat in the card inside the camera before you start shooting again. Not every time you press record but when you put in a card to start shooting for the day, use the format option.

    I have the T2i T3i and the 60D there all good my New camera is the Lumix G7 I love all the features it has. Is the 60D autofocus good in video mode also I have a Sony a5000 I wonder how can I get the colors to match in post I like shooting in a flat profile how can I get that on my Sony a5000?

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Yes, you can dial in any WB that you want. It has manual Kelvin values which is another reason I really like the cam. I mention the Kelvin's in this video and that's what I'm referring to but even in cams that don't have them, you can do a custom WB, it's just a little more work involving taking a picture and using it as a reference.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    All of those cams have basically the same guts (sensor, etc) so you get pretty much the same quality. The T4i and T5i have upgraded sensors but I haven't seen much difference. They also have longer record times if that's important. Pick based on the features you want and know that, for the most part, you'll get the same image from all of them. Please use the links in my description if possible, they're affiliates. Those sites usually have the best price and great sales.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    No problem Tom. If you're buying brand new please check the links in this video's description to compare prices. BH (affiliate link) usually has the best brand new prices and sometimes some good deals on kits.

    Thanks Jake. Glad it helped with your 60D. Have fun shooting!

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  12 років тому

    I personally like the 60D for a few reasons. However it depends on what you need. The quality you will get from the image will be the same. There are some great deals via my links in the description for the T4i right now. If you need continious auto focus you might consider the T4i although it's a brand new feature that works just OK. On the 60D I like the Kelvin (white balance) controls, better battery, 1/3 ISO stops, top LCD & a few other features. You'll be happy with either one.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  12 років тому

    These cams can heat up but it's not generally a problem with these newer DLSR's unless you're out in the sun or running them for a very long time continuously. It is a possibility however. There are many limitations to DLSR's so you really have to look at what kind of work you'll be doing with it and then see if the cams limitations get in the way of producing your videos. You may need a more traditional type ENG camera with easy audio hookups, auto-focus, long run times, etc.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Yes, that is one of the main uses of DSLR for video. They give you the shallow depth of field you are used to seeing on film cameras as well as the ability to uses various lens. You have to learn how to use them but they work well for short film type work.

  • @twyscarver

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Thanks Brian. The battery is one of the reasons I like the 60D. Agreed.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    The 50 1.8 is a great starter lens. It's built cheaply but it performs well giving you lots of natural light and a shallow depth of field.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Yeah I listed the alternative to that discontinued lens. Check out other Sigma zooms from the page that takes you to or click on the alternative lens. That lens really was just a guide to give you a brand to look at and start thinking of what zoom you can get in your budget. It gets pricier when you want to keep the same large aperture throughout the entire zoom range which you might need in darker settings. Otherwise determine how close you need to be on your shot and buy a fixed length lens

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    If your current lens is a Canon EF mount then it will also work on the 60D. It's a pretty standard mount so look it up and see if it will work. The battery is an LP-6 so I don't think it will work with your old battery. These cams come with a battery. SDXC card will work as long as it's Class 6 or higher and you get 4gb for every 12 minutes so the time will vary based on the size of your card. Have fun, thanks for watching.

  • @brennangillis2009

    Thanks, man! Much appreciated. I know both cameras are a wee older technology, but can't wait to play with both!

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Thanks Jake. That's the question I get most and unforuntately there is no single answer. Budget plays a large role. In your case you need two different types of lenses. You need wide for landscapes and something longer for portraits. A zoom might be the answer but then you can't get those large apertures. Action shooting won't matter much in video but your subject will. I really need to work on some video about lenses soon;)

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  12 років тому

    No. I needed it for the demo. This was shot on a T2i (550D). They both have the same sensor but different options. For video, I prefer the 60D because of it's wider ISO range, manual audio control, selectable Kelvin (color temperature) and swivel screen just to name a few. Thanks for watching.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    No. I have the T2i. It doesn't have manual audio controls, as good of an ISO range or manual Kelvin controls. The 60D also has the pro battery which lasts much longer. Thanks for watching!

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  12 років тому

    The good news is you're going to get the same quality as far as the look of your video goes, with each of those cameras. They all have the same sensor. So you should pick based on options. I prefer the 60D personally but that's just my taste. Compare the other features of the cams including for photography. Check out the link in this video's description to compare them. For example on the 60D I like the better battery, customized Kelvin's and 1/3 ISO stops just to name a few.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Thanks. Any lens with a large aperture like 2.8 or lower will give you a nice shallow depth of field (blurry background). But it's really hard to keep things in focus so you really have to learn how to use it. You can get the cheap Canon 50mm 1.8 and start there. It produces nice blurry backgrounds when shot right.

  • @MATTDALOR1AN
    @MATTDALOR1AN 12 років тому

    @thepodcastersstudio yeah I'm doing a doc and my interviews will be within 4 feet I believe. I don't know if the Rode will be camera mounted or on a stand... I might just buy the H4N from Amazon to test it....if it's a significant difference I'll keep it. Thanks for the response

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  12 років тому

    Yes, manual always. Set your shutter speed at double your frame rate (30fps = 1/60 shutter speed) and adjust exposure based off your aperture and ISO settings. Use native ISOs if possible (160, 320, etc) and the lower the better (160 being best). Of course there are many exceptions to these rules but this is a great place to start.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Hi Sergey, not sure if I entirely understand your question but I suspect that lens doesn't have a real low aperture so you won't get really shallow depth of field (blurred background) but if it works on the 650D then it will work the same on the 60D.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    The 50mm is a great starter lens because you'll get the shallow depth of field and more light into the camera. You'll have to "zoom with your feet" because it is constant at 50mm but that is a good lesson and teaches you how to shoot video better by actually moving to a different spot to get your shot.

    Hi Steven, the 7D is a great cam and even better photography cam but the 60D is better for video. With it's tilt screen and other features I mention here it's much better. The quality of the video will be the same because the sensors are the same and when I made this video the 7D didn't even have manual audio control, it does now. However there are not Digi5 sensors in newer cams however their video looks the same. If I bought today I would go with the 70D. It's the best APS-C on the market.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Thanks. Are you talking about converting the files to work better in your editor or compressing the final project to publish to the web? Try the UA-cam presets in your editor if you have them. That is the easiest way.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  12 років тому

    I would also take a look at the T3i via those links because you might be able to get an even better price with a lens package. It too has the same sensor but different options. It's a little older but still has the same quality in it's image. The lens plays a big role in the videos you see. The lenses that come with those cams (kit lenses) don't have a large enough aperture to give you the really shallow depth of field you see in film. So that's also a consideration.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Yes. With your camera you should of received some software on a disc. One part of that is called the EOS Utility. It allows you to connect your camera to your computer and you can use that as a monitor. You can even control some of the settings from your computer. Pretty cool.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Thanks Derrek. Most of the stuff you see in my videos is lit with natural light even when indoors. Crop sensor DSLR's still have some noticeable noise in the mid-tones even when lit well. Try using the Standard picture profile and keep the ISO's at 160, 360, 640 when possible. These ISO's have less noise then even the ones under them.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Thanks. The key is to shoot really good HD video. I actually never watch my own stuff in 360 because it's exported for HD but it's good to know it still looks good. If your HD file looks great then you SD will look decent too. The key to getting the cleanest looking video even for these cams is lots of light. Shoot in front of a large window & expose correctly and you'll get what you want. Have fun!

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Hi Sandrea. I just checked out your channel to see what you were using the close up's for and now I see...make-up! It makes sense now;) I can see how much of a difference the 60D made. The video looks just that much better and you do a great job with lighting. Your videos are great. Keep it up, you have lots of subscribers!

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    I've tried a bunch and honestly if you're not going to do a lot of post production color grading on the file I like "Standard." Check out the video on SD cards that I JUST released a few minutes ago. It was shot with only natural light and the Standard profile and I did NO corrections to it not even levels. I think it's my cleanest looking video to date.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Yep it's a great cam. It has the same parts inside as the 60D does so you should have no problem getting the same results if you watch and apply the lessons in my videos. Have fun!

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    You can set it to one of the auto-focus settings which will allow you to refocus the shot by pressing the shutter button half way down while recording but this will mess with your image. You will have to get focus manually as there is no continuous AF on these cams. It won't do it for you.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Thanks for the correction;) I like both but the 70D is the most current and if you need continuos autofocus (AF that you don't have to control) then I would go with that camera. If budget is a concern you should be able to get a good deal on a 60D, check my links in the description, because the 70D is the replacement for the 60D. Both shoot pretty much the same quality. It's just about features and budget.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  11 років тому

    Thank you very much. Lenses are tough because each person needs a different lens. You can get the 50mm 1.8 from Canon for only $99 and it's a great lens to get started using shallow depth of field at large apertures as well as being good for low light. But depending on what you are filming you might need a zoom. Check out my links in description including my gear page for why I own each lens.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  12 років тому

    Thanks. In 720 you can only record 60fps. You have to shoot 1080 to shoot in 24 or 30fps. But for slow mo shooting you want to be shooting at 60fps and then you will conform that to 24fps which will give you the smooth slow mo you are looking for. You want as many fps as you can get so that 60fps is your best setting for the Canon 60D.

    They all use pretty much the same guts but the T4i is supposed to be slightly upgraded inside. Plus it has continuous auto-focus with the new lens if that's something you want. So the T4i is slightly better internally but I love the external feel and options of the 60D.

  • @ShortcircuitzTV

    Hey there!
    I just bought a 60d for MY film work. It came with a lens, which many have deemed as "crappy" or "plain". What IS helpful is the correct SETTINGS you use when filming.
    Ray Ortega gave a great tutorial on camera settings, and I found the PERFECT setting, which makes up for any shortcomings of my "Crappy" lens.

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  12 років тому

    There is no single cam for every situation and most of this is personal opinion. I like the image from the 60D & the features as well more than the T4i. For low light & shallow depth of field, DSLR's are going to out perform regular camcorders. If you need to film continuously for more than 12 minutes, the T4i can do 30 minutes, reg. camcorders can do as long as your SD card allows. You won't know which you like better until you shoot with them, but for me, I prefer DSLR for my personal projects

  • @RayOrtega
    @RayOrtega  12 років тому

    Thanks. This just basic three point lighting with really cheap lights you can get at any home supply store like Home Depot etc. Also, what helps a lot is knowing how to work with the footage in post production. But if you light it well, with a basic three or four point lighting setup, you'll have great looking video. Video love light. There are a ton of awesome tutorials on lighting on UA-cam. Just search and you'll learn a ton! Thanks for watching. I'll try to talk about it in a video sometime

  • @RayOrtega

    Thanks for watching and the great feedback! You are probably looking for a "macro" lens. They allow you to get extremely close to your subject. Other than that you might need to just back up and zoom in to get as close as you can.

    Good question. I have never used it for that. You can fix some of that in post of if you setup the cam correctly with proper lighting then I think you can keep a handle on it. However, like I said I haven't really played with any stop motion. No doubt there are some good videos on here where someone has used this cam for that.

    The adapter you see and the one that is listed is for lenses with Contax / Yashica (C/Y, RTS) Lenses to fit on a Canon EOS camera body. But if you do a search from the site that it takes you to, you can probably find a fotodiox adapter to fit the lens you are going to buy.

    Hey Ray, thank you so much mate, I got really fed up with my 60D when it came to shooting my type of Media. However after watching your video, I am a believer! My video never look so good, will have an edit up tomorrow, thanks again and all the best.

    It might. Probably depends on the quality of your lav but it should work. The H1's preamps also might not be as clean as a pricey model but the key is to give it a shot. Order one via my links in this description from B&H and returns are easy if it doesn't work for you. Thanks

    one thing for me to change to canon and buy that 60d model was the fact that when u use old m42 lenses with an adapter u can focus to infinity, it was impossible before with my nikon d3100. i am more into fotos but for me that also was one of the most important things why i bought the canon 60d :) And i am really happy with it.

    I wouldn't say you're missing anything exactly. These cams have many limitations but produce great images. But you must pick a cam based on how you are going to use it. There is no perfect cam. Even really expensive ones always come with compromise. That's why you often see these cams with lots of other gear attached. To help with the limits. But in your case, without adding more gear you'd likely be better off with a traditional camcorder.

    Both. There are ways to record audio into the camera so that it's "baked into" the video file and ways to record "second sound" that you'll need to sync. Recording out of the camera usually produces better results but there are ways to get good audio into the camera. Check out my DSLR playlist where I talk about both ways to record audio with your DSLR. Thanks for watching!

    I just ordered this DSLR. It's an upgrade from my T3. Great video btw.

      Congrats. If it was the T3i and you still have it, I would hold on to it. That cam's zoom feature is the only cam to have it. It's great for some uses.

      I only have the T3 and unfortunately it died on me. I was initially going for the 6D but the price is out of my budget. I ordered the 60D body instead. Gonna save up for a good lens.

    I made the plunge into the HD world and bought the 60D. I tested the AV output and yes, it does output to my 7" external monitor while it records. The AV out plug will shut down the 3" onboard screen, but that is not really a problem. Thanks for the help, now i just need to figure out the optics and settings, do some audio tests and try the HD chroma keying. I am moving from DV tape ingesting into FCP to SD card ready made mov files. I love it.

    Depends on where you shop. Check my links in the description. T5i is brand new but seems the same as T4i. I still prefer the 60D over all of them. There will be a 70D in the near future probably but I have no idea what the specs will be and it will be much more money.

    With the histogram, the only thing I pay much attention to is the right side. As long as the histogram is not slammed up against the right side of the box (blown out image) you'll be ok. Of course this also applies to the left side (too dark) as well but not being overexposed is often most important. Sometimes however there will be portions like a bright sky which will cause the meter to go all the to the right and it's just a choice of exposing for what is most important, your subject.

    I like all the Canon video DSLR after the T2i. Right now the T5i is a great cam. I love my 60D even more but the new 70D looks like the best overall on the market in your budget. It's a little more above your price. If you don't need auto focus then the 60D is still my favorite.

    If you want cheap, look for a dynamic mic like a Shure SM58 which will reject more background noise. If you want to plug that into the camera you'll need the adapter but you might have to most of the camera's gain so that will create noise. To avoid that you need a preamp in between the mic and the camera or to record into a separate recorder and sync the audio in post.

    It helps to be close to the mic but ACG is not an issue. The Videomic however, doesn't have any plus db I don't think but you'll have to double check. It has a -10 and -20 but I don't think it has any +. That is what will allow you to use less gain from the 60D which will produce less hiss from the camera's preamp. You can get the 60D body only via my links in the description for the same price with free shipping. Easy returns.

    Yep. @ripeartsHD has it right. A tripod will stand on it's own. The monopod makes you more mobile but requires you to hold it.

    Thanks Ari. Nga, the EOS software comes with the camera. Simply install it on your computer, connect your cam as Ari describes and you'll be able to see you cam on your computer monitor.

    Thanks for sharing. May I know what camera you used to record this video and how long it take you to upload this nearly 5mins video in UA-cam?

    Set you auto-focus setting to AF Quick and you'll be able to use the digital zoom to get your focus. You can only use it before you press the record button not during recording.
