I'm with you on pretty much all counts. For the 8bit mircos, one huge issue was the controllers of the day and their lack of a second fire button. Granted the hardware could actually support a second button, at least in the case of the C64, but commodore and other peripheral makers just refused to make one until _way_ late in the system's life span. They really needed to take a clue from the NES and SMS much earlier (I made the same gripe about the 8bit conversions of ghouls n ghosts)... Anyway, the thing they got right on the C64 version was trying to stay within the limits of the hardware. Sure the gameplay wasn't up to par, but it actually moved faster than a snail stuck in molasses so it was a half step in the right direction compared to the other two. And that's where the proper way to handle it would've come in. The NES couldn't do the arcade version justice, so they did a complete reimagining of it when they made Mighty Final Fight. The same general idea should've played out here. Keep the limits of the hardware in mind and make something playable rather than trying to make something that only looks good in stills. But then it wouldn't fool anyone based on screenshots on the box (so says the cynic in me).
Hi matey, yep control issues with a lot of conversions back then especially with pushing up to jump with trigger combinations etc. As you say would have been made so much easier if the companies back then supported a dual button controller. I like what you say about the NES version.... They knew the limitations and worked a different version in which is credible. Thanks for sharing this info matey, much appreciated my friend 😎🍺
I'm super impressed that they managed to get that kind of graphics out of the spectrum. The Amiga version could have been so much better as it was a rather capable home computer.
To state the obvious it was getting pretty hard to replicate arcade games of the late 80's unlike the earlier part of the decade where the 64 put in some great conversions such as wonderboy, Kung fu Master, shinobi etc etc. Nevertheless Commodore did manage to release some decent conversions around this era but sadly this was not one of them - getting a lousy 4.4 out of 10 on lemon64. As far as fighting games goes, a very good one, probably not as iconic as Double Dragon but a true classic nonetheless and one i'm sure due to its popularity many fans were waiting to see. Glad to see the vs videos back and thank you for covering this great game.
Hi matey, yep will plan a few more VS vids to go alongside the other content I have planned 😎 Valid point about the games improving and trying to convert onto the aging systems of the day. 😉🍺
My cousin had it on Super Famicom and I used to go round to his and would love playing this game! Very fond memories of the Famicom version. Awesome video OG! Always love your videos keep up the good work 👍
I didn't play Final Fight till '91 on a friend's Snes. Decent game, such a shame it wasn't multiplayer. Double Dragon might have had its faults but we played that to death, co-op on the ST and I still have my Gameboy cart, which surprised me with how playable it was on the little grey-screened blur box. I guess what I am saying is, by the time I got to play Final Fight, it didn't blow me away as much as the earlier beat-em-ups did. With my nostalgia glasses firmly on I would say Target Renegade for the ZX and Golden Axe for the Sms are 8-bit beat-em-ups done well. I was a big fan of Altered Beast and Splatterhouse in the arcades around then too. Whitby, Morecombe, Blackpool, Yarmouth with the Grandparents, Good times.
Hi Adam, visiting arcades back then was amazing times !!! So many great games released and so many great memories. I did Yarmouth back in the day, but never Blackpool that many say was the best in the UK for video game arcades back in the day.
Its bonkers how they managed to get it on the 8 bits duffy buddy, I would of loved a master system port of this back in the day, I've only ever played the arcade version and I love that 😄
As I say respect for trying to convert this but.... It was truly awful and you would have been so disappointed if you had purchased this back then !!!!

I actually felt for you when it got to that part of the video. lol! 🤗Thought to myself, 'wtf is he gonna do here' 🤣 Anyway, the water from Majorca saw you through to give spot-on verdicts👍. And out of all the versions you compared here, there was only one that was even worth playing... The Mega CD version. Quite impressed by that one. 👍🙂 Overall, great comparison video. Keep up the good work m8. 🤗
Hi Richard glad you enjoyed it matey, was actually good fun looking at all those awful conversions, they really did do a bad job on this one! As you say game was saved by Mega CD which had a great variant soundtrack too. Might have a few Heinekens this afternoon matey... This beers for you 😎🍺

@OGDuffy some great memories, I love your channel. My son is 20 and he watches it with me and laughs at the graphics of the spectrum..... he has no idea how good those games were.... mostly🤣.
My favorite version of Final Fight has to be the Sega CD port. Growing up I got the Snes port with my Super Nintendo on Christmas of 91 and the Sega CD version in...1993 when it first came out. I still don't quite understand why we never saw an official Genesis version but...indy developers made one and it's almost indistinguishable to the Sega CD port (minus the music). You should check it out! Not so fun fact- The US version of Final Fight for the Snes was also censored. Nintendo didn't want you to be able to beat up women so they removed it. Funny, not too long after that I was kicking the beans out of Chun Li in Street Fighter II. The Snes port is missing levels as well because Nintendo went real cheap with the cart size. :( Fun Fact: If you want to play the very best 8-bit "version" of Final Fight check out the Nes's take on the game. It's called Mighty Final Fight and believe me you will love it. It's like playing a cross over Final Fight meets Double Dragon (Nes/Master System). It's pretty wild and very fun!
That NES game sounds great…. I love Double Dragon ….. Such an amazing game 😉 So this sounds good to me 😀 The Soundtrack on the Mega CD was really well done as we would expect I suppose with it being in CD format? As for Nintendos censorship, well not sure what they were thinking especially as you say with Chun Li 😂
I think you’re maybe more a DD fan like me was because it came out when we were younger and more prominent in arcades. But i concede final fight is the better game.

I agree with all u said about the home ports , not good at all , no winners there The 8 bit and 16 bit home ports are not great .c64 version poor blocky mess lack of enemies on screen Speccy had a good attempt at the graphics as big and detailed but lacking the gameplay Amiga version not too bad looking but jerky and no music Snes version was very good bar the lack of 2 player , the mega cd version was prob the closest to the arcade version for me
Hi Will, great summary from you there matey and glad you agree with my verdicts on this one. Such a shame they all made a shambles of this conversion as the Arcade original is such an iconic game still to this day. 😎🍺
My first time seeing or playing this was on the Amiga (copied discs from a friend) and thought it was pretty good given I had nothing to compare with. Bought the C64 version a few years ago, played it once and then it sat on the shelf till it was sold it is that bad - characters are barely recognisable. I would say stick figures with clothing maybe?! Kudos to the Speccy & Amstrad devs for trying to do the big characters but the animation is terrible and the Amstrad looks especially sluggish. The Atari ST version I had never seen until this vid, yeah similar to the Amiga but that scrolling is headache inducing! I have played the MegaCD version and do really like it, I believe though it is like Golden Axe on MegaCd where it is single player only (cart version of Golden Axe can be 2 player Co-Op) This is one game that was so late in the 8 bit lifespan and a lot of people had moved to Amiga or ST by then so they shouldn't have bothered with the 8 bit versions. The Street Fighter 2 conversions are just as bad in the same way on the 8 bit and the 16 bit versions have so many discs you are swapping them often and not forgetting single fire button doesn't help for the multitude of moves. At least we got decent conversions of Black Tiger, Bionic Commando, Ghouls & Ghosts, Mercs and a few other Capcom titles
