Really agree about the Shark. I was hoping they would bring the Bao 5 before the FBT exemption ends. A PHEV SUV with a low range transfer case and locking diffs and with the FBT exemption I think would have killed it.
Agree. Hopefully, the Bao 5 will come soon. If there is a delay, looking on the bright side, it might coincide with the launch of the Blade 2 battery which is likely to have much better energy density.
Totally agree. The only thing I'm not sure about is if the bao 5 would have been priced under the EV luxury car tax to qualify for the FBT exemption. Either way I think the bao 5 is great and from what I have seen on video they are very capable off road.
They will be selling Bao 5 and 8 in international markets from next year. While it's on the road in China there is still ongoing development of the platform with features like violent mode (crawl control) being release at the end of this month. Better to be patient and deliver a complete package, then rush to market with something under done.

The fact you cannot buy a Holden or Ford V8 Ute anymore is one reason why vehicles like the BYD Shark are a potential replacement for some that do not want a slow diesel Ute.
BYD Shark seems to really pain the established car reviewers and bloggers, they see lots of good in it, but are at pain to have it look as though they are not worthy. Every reviewer will gloss through its positives and painstakingly try to fault it, and then console themselves that it won't be taking sales from the usual popular Utes. BYD have developed a ground up platform that is well suited to a PHEV, whereas ford has bolted in a system to make the ranger a PHEV. I think in the not too distant future there will be other 4x4/ute manufacturers using a layout similar to the shark.

I would imagine the Ranger PHEV would appeal to buyers who like their utes, but aren’t towing or off-roading. I don’t know what percentage of ute buyers don’t tow or off-road, but it’s not an insignificant amount I suspect. As you said also, the typical bloke who likes a Ranger or HiLux won’t be who’s buying BYD sharks. But, sales figures will reveal all in time. I personally would like to be able to buy lower model single cab utes with decent petrol engines and regular bed. I currently drive a petrol Triton with aluminium tray, but would prefer to be able to buy an SR HiLux single cab with the regular bed (like they have in UAE market). I would love a BYD shark, but as I tow a 2.2 T (tare mass) van, once loaded with water and gear, probably 2.7 T fully loaded mass. Not sure on fuel economy with the 1.5 l turbo petrol as well for towing. The GWM PHEV looks interesting, but not a fan of NCM battery and payload looks too low. Are you aware of a BYD shark update next 1-2 years with increased towing and potentially using the Blade 2 version LFP battery?

Well said Brett regarding the Tasman. How TF Kia with all their money and marketing got this Tasman engine so wrong is just insane especially when you're trying to compete in the most popular vehicle category in Australia. They needed that V6 diesel from the Genesis or to have come up with something new. To throw that shit 4 cylinder in will turn so many people off especially as these cars are being bought not just for work but for work and family duties and to drive such a slug all the time gets tiring..
Not a ute buyer more SUV and own an Everest Trend 4WD (which I run in 2WD 90% of the time and use 4A when towing or heavy rain/icy conditions and 4H/4L when off road). Would a Everest PHEV temp me? maybe, problem is where I live I only have 1 20amp plug in garage which is of course grid power so that would mean adding further running cost expense together with going back to 95 RON v premium diesel an the price difference right now ranges rom 15c to 45c depending where you are. None of the other utes or there SV equiv to me are viable option, maybe the Landcruiser Prado but even then yeah not paying what Toyota want for it.
Thanks DE - looks like UA-camrs are offline for Christmas events so here’s my views - I’ve owned 12 Subarus for over four decades for their build quality/reliability but now a Toyota Hilux - Toyota are very slooooow when it comes to generation change for models - for example the Troopcarrier still has used the same body skin design for decades and a Cairns based ‘Toyota’ appasionata who has his own UA-cam channel reported signs of rust already appearing in the roof/windscreen area of his new Troopcarrier - this has also been reported in a Sunshine Coast LDV Ute story but it’s not something I would expect from Toyota but the Toyota Troopcarier is an old design that probably has a modest treatment for galvanising the metal roof/body - I expect in time these rusted body/chassis symptoms are going to be unfortunate surprises for many that have spent over $75k for their ‘badge of honour’ Troopcarrier - a Chinese ute is cheap for a reason but maybe I time they’ll also produce rust free reliable vehicles.
If the dog washer was smart he would plug the Shark in and then plug the trailer off the Shark and then the customer is paying the charge his car. It makes more sense to do the UTE first as there is no competition for a plugin hybrid in that sector. It also makes ever one day “I want to SUV like that”. They also introduced the small Ute first. BYD know what get are doing. I’m gonna let other do the beta testing of the Shark for 6 months before I get one. 20+ years with only Subarus and Toyotas, but they have fallen way behind at the moment with there offerings.
A dog washer could market these as an incentive to customers by not having to use your own power supply and will enable them to work without the home owner/renter being home as after a few times your dog in the backyard will feel comfortable with the wash&dry person being able to collect them.
The Chery ute is very likely to come to Australia. I only mentioned the Santa Cruz to describe the possible direction of the Chery. Hope that makes sense 👍

Diesels have so many emissions control devices on them now that they need more intensive maintenance (intake manifold cleaning) and if this doesn't get done or catch can fitted the intake eventually clogs up. Older diesels are far more long lasting. The triton is great though.

With Shark it's 3L (or Zero if you have solar panels) city driving, plus 8L on motorway. And you have EV, which is faster than Raptor, modern, practical, fun to drive and affordable. Don't forget FBT exemption. The only complaint I'm hearing is that rear seats not reclinable. But that's common dual cab Ute problem.

Not to mention the transition into dull electric vehicles.
You’re just old. None of the P platers I know drive diesel utes, it’s all brz, commodores, golf gtis. The only ones comparing the performance of utes are old dudes. And I’m not sure what Utes you’ve ever driven but I powerful Ute is far more enjoyable to drive than a slow one. Just like a fast hatch is more enjoyable than a slow one. After the v6 amarok release all manufacturers realised they need more powerful Utes because the amarok was such a beast to drive and anyone who drove one then hated the others.

@@lengerer - back in the day I was driving around in a 83' XE Fairmont Ghia ESP v8 and the P Platers were driving (to me buzz boxes) like Suzuki Swift GTi, the would mall you in traffic and around bends but on the highway could not keep up, one particular friend had a Nissan EXA Turbo and another had the Mitshibishi Starion Turbo (both would be considered as hand grenade engine by todays standards with turbo lag then BAM boost at 4,000rpm) they would read "fast fours and rotary's" while the rest of us were reading Street Machine or Wheels. As Feris said, life moves fast, sometimes you need to stop and take a look around.

I thought you might actually know enough to make informed comments. I was wrong. Just a quick point on driving range, in this case the 800km for BYD's Shark. I have over 50 years driving experience and anyone that wants to drive more than 4 hours without a break is not too sharp. That translates to about 400km of highway driving, which is half the range of the Shark. I still have 3 cars including a V8 monster, and the only advantage of getting further on a tank is that you don't have to be as fussy picking the low poiont of a fuel cycle, because there's always next week! That said, my EV puts all the ICE cars to shame on most metrics, comfort and safety.

The ranger has a pretty thirsty petrol engine and tiny 11kwh battery. Makes absolutely no sense. Better getting a ranger V6 diesel or going a shark.

Isuzu Philipines just released a 2.2 litre diesel likely to replace the 3.0 litre and they will keep the 1.9 litre with mild hybrid setup

The ranger and Hilux hybrid is shit..everyone knows that..they just slapped a battery pack and a tiny motor at the existing item.its a piece of shit. Just say it as it is like how crappy and chitty Chinese utes are..be true to your words mate.

I was wrong.
Just a quick point on driving range, in this case the 800km for BYD's Shark. I have over 50 years driving experience and anyone that wants to drive more than 4 hours without a break is not too sharp. That translates to about 400km of highway driving, which is half the range of the Shark. I still have 3 cars including a V8 monster, and the only advantage of getting further on a tank is that you don't have to be as fussy picking the low poiont of a fuel cycle, because there's always next week!
That said, my EV puts all the ICE cars to shame on most metrics, comfort and safety.
Yawn. Bit of a blanket statement about your EV... Anyway enjoy it I'd rather watch grass grow than drive an EV.

@@Stuff-i-Like No test drives? Ford Ranger PHEV, GWM Alpha PHEV and Kia Tasman aren't even out yet. First deliveries of the BYD Shark are in January. Bit hard to test drive.
