Thank you for mentioning separate savings accounts for sinking funds! Family thought I was crazy when I rejoined the workforce at a school and opened 1 checking and 2 savings. Checking to keep my pay separate from my son's social security, one savings for house down payment, and one savings to cover the summer months I don't get paid. It's been a year and worked great! I was surprised at the amount of coworkers who don't save for summer. They just work at other jobs for less pay and hope bills get paid. I'd rather live on less all year and have the summer off to do projects I can't get done during school.
Because I was motivated by you a couple years ago to plan for Christmas - when Amazon day hit this year I was able to get ALL the presents I needed since the deals were great and I had enough saved already. I hate Christmas shopping so this is AMAZING!!!
I know posting UA-cam videos is a lot of work, but I would love to see more videos, especially BBP strategies for real budgets people send in. Your methods are the most effective budget strategy I have seen yet, and I crave more knowledge!!! Thank you! 💚💙💜
Kumiko, I'm trying to get my husband to live a life with no debt but he just doesn't have the vision. You continue to be my motivation to get out of debt.
In the past I have done the 52 week savings challenge and was quite successful I actually used that money to purchase a memorial stone for my father and my brother. What I have been doing for the past year is taking 10% of my paycheck and at the end of the month I would divide that by three and split it up between different savings goals. I'm also doing the $5 envelope which I am dedicating to getting back into a bowling league. I may at some point do the 52 week again but right now I'm happy with what I'm accomplishing.
Thank you so much for teaching me about sinking funds. I currently have over $6000 in sinking funds. From car replacement, house and car repairs, Christmas, Vacation, eye glasses, tires.
As a newly single parent, this information has truly inspired me to get my finances together as the struggle is real and the resources you've provided offers the help that I needed - thank you!
My wife and I did very well in the amount of money that we amassed for retirement. Well over 80% of that money averaging about $2 million was made because of taking advantage of buying high-end stocks at a deep discount during the Great Recession. 2009 I fired the stockbroker got rid of all mutual funds and bought individual dividend stocks. Be patient don't get scared and do your homework and you can make a killing.
natalia I agree, my profit has been consistent regardless of the market situation, I entered the market in early 2018 and the constant downtrends and losses discouraged me so I sold, came back in December 2020, this time with the guidance of a recommended investment advisor from a well-known economist on a subreddit, long story short, it's been 2 years now and I've made over $850,000 on the guidance of my investment advisor.
@@MariusNatt “Autumn Lynzi Smith” is the investment advisor that guides me, you probably might've come across her before. She's quite known in her field so make sure you look her up because it shouldn't be difficult to find her website.
I love the visual trackers. I did a “Christmas in July” challenge this year and saved $250 in 5 weeks. So instead of having to worry later I’ll be prepared and excited.
I find myself so much more motivated by seeing my sinking funds in my envelopes. Im lucky in that my debt is all relatively low interest so I've chosen to start sinking funds instead of funneling it toward debt because Im so much more motivated to add to those. It took me 4 months to actually figure out a budget that works for me, not what I want it to be. Its so great to see the youtube budgeting community and how they use the TBM method in their lives. Has made such a big difference in my life.
I do this too, except I keep it to 3 categories for my own sanity. 1. Household: kids' purchases, clothing, holidays, vacations, pets, furniture (things that come up that aren't reoccurring expenses) these are bigger family purchases that usually require a conversation with the hubs to make sure we're making these decisions together. 2. Maintenance: cars & home. And 3. Emergency Fund. :)
Excited that you guys are planning to have more children. I’m sure James will be a great big brother. Thank you for sharing your future plans with us ☺️
My debt was piling up and I was overwhelmed. I got a personal loan from my bank to pay all my credit cards off. I have a set monthly payment for the loan. Now I will budget what is left. I’m even going to budget for a savings. Your video was extremely helpful. Thank you.
You are amazing!! I’m so glad I found your videos… I’ve been kicked so many times.. and when I’m down.. I just watch one of your videos and gives a boost to get back on track!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!! Your awesome!!!
Focussed sinking funds have saved me so much! As a result of trying to pay off debt, mine are few; Christmas, Birthdays (ongoing of course), Renter's Insurance, and Income Tax. Everything else I either have to cash flow (unlikely, lol) or do without. I am also contributing to an Emergency Fund, and hope to tie the debt and EF in a bow in 2 years. Your method and channel are a saving grace for many of us. Bless your new family Miko!
Right now I have a sinking for a range, car tires and car insurance bc I pay that every six months. I have already reached my snow blower sinking fund for this winter. Whoo hoo!
Yes! I am currently doing your Building Blocks of Budgeting course and I love your style. I’ve lost some steam after finding you at the end of last year but the course and videos like this are pumping me up to get going and crush some goals!! Thank you so much!! I’ll be sending you all the baby vibes!!
I have drained all of our sinking funds when I went on Maternity leave (1 yr). I am so excited to start again once I got back at work next month. I need to really focus this time coz I am starting from 0.
Great savings video. Please consider making more stickers in your TBM shop. I love using them on each paycheck budget tracker pages for payday in my workbook. Makes budget cute as I record my budget and actuals for that paycheck. Easier than doodling. Love stickers you sent in prior LVP and BBP workbooks!
Can you do a video of real life shopping with your envelopes? Especially grocery shopping with a mixed cart. What do you do when you go to the store and buy food, home cleaning supplies, and toiletries when those are three separate envelopes in your budget. Maybe like a day in the life video with getting gas and grabbing lunch out as well to show using your envelopes all over.
Miko I missed your videos so much. I follow you on IG but it is not the same for me. Love your videos and I have created this habit of cooking and listened to your videos too. Thanks for this.
*Learn how to budget and save!* Me... Goes and buys a $75 (CAD) budgeting book with money I don't have to spend.. 😂😂😂 I'm off to a great start! Really excited about it though. 💚
Thank you for this video, it was very helpful in giving me understanding of sinking funds and how to use them. I'm now more prepared to setting goals and start saving in 2023.
That's what my dad does he has savings just for property taxes and each month they put money into it. I honestly didn't know what sinking funds were until today. I always just called it general savings. Yeah I have a cash envelope for hair cut I go every other month they only take cash easier to just make an envelope for it. Bowling money since I'm on a league. I do have one for holidays but I usually go buy a gift cards for where I plan spending my Christmas sinking fun it so I don't go over what the budget allows.
I really need to redo my sinking funds. Baby fund tip. When you know of what hospital you will use for birth, or even possible transfer from home or birthing center. Contact them and learn about what cash pay before discharge is. We were just told possibly up to $6000 for hospital (not doctor or anesthesiologist) vs if we leave and they charge insurance it would be $20,000 to $50,000. We are totally paying cash before discharge in a week or two.
This year I became debt free I've saved a fully funded emergency fund while cash flowing everything I have my envelopes ready so I can start my sinking funds for 2023 (it's my goal) I'm currently cash flowing Christmas now so in October my money is free to start off my sinking funds for next year as I've alot of sinking funds due at the start of the year love your visual board
I've also already done my savings 2023 sinking funds sheet as the end of the year is crazy with so many changes going to happen. I'm so happy to see a video on my feed!
I’ve been struggling with savings for a long time every time I try to kickstart I end up needing that money for something. This very helpful and I’m hoping to begin working on saving an EF starting in September.
This is amazing and so helpful. I’m struggling to get this year sorted so definitely want to start sooner for big events. My eldest has his birthday on December 21st and next year he will be 10 so want to spoil him a little more. Being a single mum in the UK with 3 children means I don’t have much spare but little and often will certainly be a huge help. Love your videos 🥰 How exciting about the wedding being so soon and about the baby 🥰 That’s one thing I wish I’d done was save more before having children xx
Hey Kumiko! Congrats on the baby!! I love your channel, planner, newsletter, and resources. You have been a big part of my financial journey (for my BFF and me alike). I have the 2022 planner in PDF. I noticed the planner has a better Yearly Balance Review pages than the one that’s currently in your shop as a standalone item. I like how the one in your shop is only one page. Please let me know when you do have it available for purchase on your shop as one page with the updated graphs. Thank you for all you do! :)
This video is awesome!! I’m grateful for the financial information you’ve provided and I love the idea of a sinking funds vision board- would have never thought about that!! Also, Can you make a video on the types of pens and highlighters you use and why you like certain products over others please 🌻🌻🌻
Miko has a video on the pens and other supplies she uses, it’s called My Budget Station. You can find it under the Organize and Clean playlist on her channel. Hope this helps!
I wish I’d seen this when I first started out, although I am on top of it all now. I’ve already started 2023 budget too, so I’m glad I’m not alone on that ❤️
I start my sinking funds over after the "event" happens instead of restarting in January. I do this to have even dollar amounts and to have cash available at all times. For example, my son's birthday is in May and I save $20 a month, every month instead of $44 for 5 months and then nothing for the rest of the year. I also don't go into the bank to get cash, I use the ATM so it is much easier to have my amounts a round number instead of trying to scrounge up $1 bills. Just like Christmas presents, you may want to buy a birthday present months in advance, so it is handy to always have some cash available in that envelope at all times. I often find things for my son's May birthday during Black Friday or Christmas and if I didn't start filling his envelope till January, I wouldn't have the cash to buy it.
This year has been hell for me financially started off well and by July terrible. Financially and emotionally..I'm finally back in a good head space and back working so I'm starting all over.Hopefully 2023 be better for me.

I went to purchase my Budget Book today, and they're out of stock until next October? Are you closing up shop? I've used your books for the last two years and I love them, and now I have to go find something else to use. Do you have any recommendations? In years past I receive an email telling me to pre-order my budget book. Did you not make any this year? I hope it comes back soon, because it's a huge help. Thanks!
Would love to see more videos of your channel on UA-cam. I always learn something new. When will the next Workbook for 2022-2023 come out? I finish my current one with September.
My wife and I get a spending allowance every week and when that money is gone you don’t spend anymore. The rest goes to sinking funds/ emergency/groceries and debt
Thanks for this. I just finished budgeting for the rest of August. I also did my monthly overview for September. This reminded me I need to plan for the holidays. I keep track of what I spent last year. I know I am not going to be able to save for everything now. I am planning to start saving with the biggest expense and work down my list to least expensive. By November I should be able to cash flow the least expensive items.
So excited for 2023!! I am stretching myself and planning a HUGE trip to the Mediterranean in Feb '24. This gives me soooo much motivation and excitement to see my next big saving become real! Thank you, MIKO!! Excited to see that BABY savings goal become useful! =D
Thank you, Miko; ever since our family has used the sinking fund, it has really changed our budget and savings for the better. Will you have some new sinking fund developed in the new year or before?
I don't have credit card debt. But I need to really figure out how to put money aside weekly for things like you mentioned. Where are these trackers you showed? Or maybe a mini course?
Question: Your back to school sinking fund is to be completed in July 2022 in the example in your video. Did you continue to add to it after July or stopped for the rest of the year?
I started your program in March 2022 and me and my husband have saved $9000! I can’t wait to see what next year will bring for us
Well done!
Miko should start a series on TBM success stories! You should be featured!

I don't have credit card debt. But I need to really figure out how to put money aside weekly for things like you mentioned. Where are these trackers you showed? Or maybe a mini course?
Also alternative to cash maybe use gift cards that can be replenished in the same way
Do you still use a credit card though just for the points. Then pull out cash from whatever category it may be. Then pay the card?
Question: Your back to school sinking fund is to be completed in July 2022 in the example in your video. Did you continue to add to it after July or stopped for the rest of the year?
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Hi Budget Mom, are you going to bring back your BBP workbooks? I went to buy one online and there are none available.
Love the chicken fund tracker
Excellent Video.
Love your course Miko !
