Fun Fact! Gladiator fights were secondary entertainment. People mainly went for the free food and gifts that the crowd received. It was the races that people obsessed over... so now go watch Ben Hur.
THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE LAUGH!! It's literally in every early 2000's movie. It's also in Star Wars Ep 1. Okay, clearly I didn't finish the reaction before saying that about episode 1 lol It's like the wilhelm scream but a laugh instead. The dude with the scars on his face actually has the scars for real. He's an Irish actor and in Ireland as a kid he was jumped and given a chelsey smile which I'm guessing you can deduce what that means. He's also in Sons Of Anarchy where they make it part of his character.
"That is your sister. That is not acceptable." There is an ancient Egyptian blessing, "May you marry your sister." A lot of that in ancient Egypt. Hard to misinterpret that.
"Restoring the Republic" sounds good to modern ears, but this is wrong for a lot of reasons. The Republic never represented "the people" who the republic system was deliberately set up to marginalize through voting schemes that gave them a voice and made sure it never mattered. The institutions of the Republic never went away and Romans always referred to their state as The Republic. It was later people who imposed the Imperial designation based on the Emperors. Who we call the Emperors referred to themselves as First Consoles but held the authority of imperator (allowing them to act almost as dictators for life) which was needed because the Republic institutions were unworkably corrupt.

I almost watched Gladiator for the first time on a flight last weekend, but I ended up skipping it because of that awkward editing. Kinda glad I did because I think I enjoyed it more this way!
Thumbs up in gladiatorial times usually meant kill the gladiator, but a wrap around thumb meant spare them
