Today we will be installing one of the most critical components of any engine. The timing chain and gear set. This set happens to be a very high quality Made in U.S.A. Cloyes timing set. This set is double roller and ready to go. I like to write on the gears with a silver paint pen to date and brand the set. I also used my paint pen to make the timing dots or marks more visible. Make sure you take your time in this step and ensure that your cam is at TDC (top dead center) with the key-way pointing at the 12 o'clock position and the camshaft's dowel key-way pointed in the 6 o'clock position. You cannot be a tooth off on this so get it right. Use assembly lube on the gears and chain. - Навчання та стиль
Thanks for posting this many years ago. I'm changing my cam and this helps me out a lot.
Small tip for every engine builder , manually rotate the engine over and make sure they stay alined , it can save you alot of money by double checking that timing
If my timing was off and I tried turning the engine in the car, and flames shot out of my open headers because either my timing was off or the rockers were too tight, does this mean I ruined my valves?
Dan Sisco doubt it.
Kepaloha. I did figure how to do it. Since the heads are on my I car I could not see the piston. I manually turned the crank until the piston came to top dead center. I checked this by sticking a screw driver in the spark plug hole. I then spun it again and checked it by sticking a screw driver in the hole. It did not hit the piston so I new that was the intake stroke. Turned it again and checked again with screw driver and the screwdriver was hitting the piston. Top dead center. Then I did what he showed in the video. Lining up the marks on the timing gears. It was actually very simple. My problem came last night when I found out that my used lifters I put in were very old and not up to the test and they failed so this week I get to do it all over again:) Hope this helps.
Heres one for yall out there. Certain Timing sets require you to machine that cam thrust plate for counter sunk screws because some timing sets have a bigger thrust bearing. The one i just purchased from summit is this way. also the dots shows timing at 0 Degrees. Witch different cams and stuff some time you get an advantage by advancing your timing 2 or 4 degrees to increase intake stroke efficiency
some good tips in the video. I would also add to put some loctite on the cam bolt and go with an electric fuel pump instead of a mechanical one. It also doesn't hurt to install the cam 4 degrees advanced for more low end torque.
This is one of the best, if not the best installation video series I’ve ever watched. Thank you!
Just subscribed, nice videos. Getting ready to do to my 289, I thought I blew my original motor and bought another one and recently discovered on my old engine that it was not blown but instead my timing cover sprung a leak on inside and was adding water to my oil. Always replace the old Timing Chain Cover. Good videos, thanks!
Good vid! The information was clear and presented well and the video quality was perfect. THANKS for sharing.
Perfect "timing" of this video. I'm about to do this very step in my rebuild. Ty!
Thanks! I needed that information about the fuel pump eccentric!!! Didn't install it originally.
Thanks for your video, very straight and to the point !!
I guess I'm 6 years late here but man I think you just might have saved my sanity. I'm actually working on a gen 1 small block chevy and this drove me nuts today. My 83 k10 started running terrible. No power, missing, stumbling. I pulled the timing cover and it's the original early 80s timing sproket with the nylon teeth. The chain was actually drooping off the bottom sproket but it still ran. Don't know how though. I'm replacing with a Summit double roller chain set and I have the crankshaft sproket installed dot up. I spent over 3 hours today trying to get that cam sproket to line up but it was always a half tooth off and wouldn't go over the dowel pin. I swear I was ready to blow a head gasket (mine not the truck) and I think I just have to move the cam a tiny bit. All afternoon trying to get it trying every link. Thanks, I won't get back to my garage until tomorrow but I'm 100% sure you lit my lightbulb
Great video...I am working with a 79 302 so some things are bit different like the timing cover on this one having the crank position sensor mount..but overall I learned a lot from this series
your information is invaluable thank you for the video
Another great video; thanks !!!!! And this coming from an AMC guy !!
he posts some wicked videos
The 302 is a "non-interference" motor, so the pistons and valves will not collide. It will just run lousy and you'll have to reinstall.
Great video tanks for Sharing . Question what's the proper torque for the boat that holds the sprocket ?
yes,the timing chain IS very important but I always soak the chain in oil overnight, just put it in a Tupperware container and cover with oil and you will thank yourself
JoJo Mama and lifters too
Thank you
Have ever thought of doing a different ford motor? The 302 is great and you explain everything really well, but I was wondering if you might be able to show information a big block fe?
Thanks.
Good video. I'd clean the paint off of the mating surface of the block though, or you're only mating with that coat of paint upon reassembly.
Thanks for that video👍🇵🇷
When you write on the gear also write down the mileage at the time of installation
Do you need to degree the camshaft to check the card readings before the timing gear installation?
Make certain when install your new cam gear that you have installed the dowel pin. It can stick in the old gear when you remove it. It is easty to forget to install the pin if you are working on the ehngine in the vehicle. You absolutely must have that pin installed.
So to advance it 4 degrees I just turn the (crank only) till the 4 degree mark aligns with the dot on the cam gear?
Are you suppsed to use an oil slinger with a double roller timing set?
Use a marine timing cover. They are made of cast iron. Also add strength to block.
Am I right in thinking that when that keyway is facing up on the crank, the engine could be firing on no.6 cylinder ie the crank is a full 360 degrees on from firing on no.1??
Do you need to degree the cam to check the cam card numbers?
hello!!
Is there a torque spec on the timing cover and water pump bolts ??? thanks
How do you turn the top part with dowel to align timing gears?
would (blue) thread locker be appropriate for the cam bolt?
So if the keyhole is facing 12 o’clock , will the 1st piston always be Top Dead Center
is this the same install on all pushrod engines?
what are the timing marks on a 403 Oldsmobile 77 Cutlass?
Do Ford letter cams have to be degreed? I'm installing a B303 cam and was told the letter cams didn't need degreed.
Cuantas libras de presión llevan ambos tornillos?
Oops I forgot the fuel pump is in the gas tank!!!!! Oh well... guess I put the fuel injection set up back!!?!!?! Bahahaha thanks for the video seriously !!! Got an 89... slowing getting parts etc?!
How find timing for camshaft mark
it's alot faster if you put the cam gear on without the chain to line it up then put the chain on.
I've been out of the game for a while, so be merciful. But, why would you use an impact on the cam bolt? I'm weirdo who never met a fastener I didn't want to find the torque spec from the manufacturer, and then cross reference with the application. I've honestly wondered how I could get a torque wrench on a lightbulb.
I bought a Rat Rod project with an allegedly rebuilt For 302 engine thrown in. I have disassembled the engine to find it has not been rebuilt. LOL Anyhow, based on information I was able to read from the non standard casting numbers on my block I think the engine was made in August 1988. It was a throttle body fuel injected engine because the timing case cover has no fuel pump mount. It came to me with and Edlebrock four barrel carburetor manifold installed. There is no starter, alternator, carburetor, distributor. When I disassembled the engine I found the lifters had rollers on them. Is this stock? (It's been a long time since I have overhauled an automobile engine) My question concerns the timing gear set up. I was expecting a gear to gear or gear and chain set up. What I found was a gear and a gear and a pair of idler gears connecting the crankshaft and cam shaft gears. Can you tell me what I have? Thanks for the information.
is the mechanical fuel pump better to have than electric? I have a 1970 mustang with 302 and I put a new fuel pump and it's still not sucking fuel, is it possible for those eccentrics to go out? could the pump be bad even though it's new? is there a way to tell if it's the eccentric or the pump? should I just and all this and convert to electric? please help, thanks
I run both with a pressure regulator to a demon 750 on my 74 bronco w/302
Not sure if you already fix the problem yet, but it could be a clogged Fuel Filter. When I was working in a Shop i saved people money for the thought they had a bad Fuel pump, but the filter was clogged up.
Will it cause the motor not to want to turn over like it has to much compression if these are out of alignment
No. That would be an interference engine. It just won’t start if it’s not done right.
I have a question about taking off the gears. I could get the top gear off but the smaller one on the bottom I cannot get it off. Any ideas or suggestions?
get a small 3 jaw gear puller
Why does the fuel pump go from electric to mechanical? Could I replace the timing chain without switching the fuel pump to mechanical?
Yes you just don't buy or leave Eccentric off
How much torque you applied to the camshaft thrust plate bolts?
120” lbs
Forgot a oil galley plug for the left side lifter galley
Good vid. Why did you dedide to go to a mechanical fuel pump? Just curious. I think you mentioned you are going to a Holley carb instead of EFI. Is that why you switched to a mecahnical pump.
Yes.
What if you are using a electric fuel pump what’s next ?
I have a question. Just installed my new cam and go my dowl for the cam and my keyway for the crank at top dead center. Does it matter if the tdc is on the compression stroke or the intake stroke? My number 1 was at top dead center and I installed the gear. When I do a full revolution back to top dead center the lifters are in a different position?
Have you gotten an answer on this question? it's a good question, I was thinking of the same thing, I've never changed a timing set before, so I'm a little spooked by it.
I may be wrong but from my understanding it doesnt matter because the cam will determine which one is the intake or compression stroke
sjpro1 The piston determines the intake or compression. If the piston is traveling up it is the compression stroke if it is traveling down that means it is creating suction from the intake valve drawing fuel in. If you put your finger over the spark plug hole on an intake stroke it will suck your finger. The compression stroke will pop your finger off. Intake stroke equals suction. Compression equals pressure.
Jeremiah Madsen the cam determines the opening of the valve which determines wheter it will actually suck or just compress
sjpro1 The cam determines which valve opens. The intake or the exhaust. If the piston were going up when the intake valve opens would the gasoline get sucked into the piston or pushed out? The piston travel determines the compression stroke or intake stroke. Not the cam. The cam determines which valve is open. See?
I can't get over the color that you painted it, looks to much like a Chevy color
Hey, man! I have a question. Hopefully, it's not too stupid. I have a new timing chain set for the 302 I am rebuilding. The cam dowel and the key are aligned, but the chain seems to short. It looks to be the same length as the old chain, but I can't get both gears to go on. What am I doing wrong here? Can anyone help a fellow out?
Figure it out yet ?
See if you can put the old chain on the new gears.
why does my keyway to the camshaft not move so easily like the one in the video?? the only way it moves is if I put the bolt back in it and use a socket to turn it, he uses his fingers and moves it like nothing
patrick whitaker I am having the same problem with my 351w factory roller motor. I went back with a comp Am and hyd rollers with link bars. When I put the cam in it didn't want to spin freely, it will spin with a wrench on the sprocket bolt and when I put the thrust washer on then the gear the cam will not turn at all ,, like it is in a bind.... any suggestions
patrick whitaker and I did put the dowel pin in the cam. I am running a Holley electric fuel pump
Hello my friend, one question do you think I have the same camshaft like yours (351W factory roller motor)? I have a 1997 mercury mountaineer AWD 5.0L, I just hope you now my question I would like to know if my car has a 351w factory roller motor. Please explain my friend thanks in advance.
Do you know what the part number is for the timing chain
Cloyes double roller timing chain part # C-3057X
The thrust plate bolts aren't hitting the chain? And if u were to go EFI you wouldn't need the fuel pump eccentric right?
Hello..watched all your videos (pretty awesome). I wonder if you could answer a question. I have 66 289 (a lot interchangeable with the 302) and am ordering parts. I haven't cracked open the front cover yet but how do I determine if that year/engine has a 1 piece or 2 piece eccentric? I KNOW it makes a difference when you order the chain and sprocket set..THANK YOU in advance
what happens if you dont have proper alignment
jose lazaro Your engine will run poorly, if at all. This timing set controls when the valves open relative to the position of the pistons, so the engine won't run if the valves aren't opening when they should. If you're unlucky, the valves and pistons can collide and you'll have some repair work to do.
You forgot to put loctite on that bolt
I Shoulda bought the double roller :(
I know this is an old video but I have a couple of questions and appreciate some info.
1: So I need to be at TDC on the compression stroke before taking everything off?
2: Have to fix a coolant leak coming from the timing cover so I figured I replace the chain and sprockets. Do I need to stick with the single sprocket which is probably what a standard 1969 302 comes with or can I go with the dual sprockets?
An electric fuel pump requires wiring up the fuel pump, I'm sure he doesn't want the headache of wiring one up for a simple carb setup.
What is better for drag racing and street use ,advanced or retard cam timing.
You forgot something
Your not gonna degree the cam , you talk about how important it is to do it right but you didn't even degree the cam....
Next lesson.....painting block.
