  • Today's video is on installing your 5.0 302 ford distributor right down to lining your sensor up, its kind of easy once you watch this video. I also show you how to set the ignition timing on that mustang gt or what ever car or truck your engine may be stuck in... :)

    I remember trying to do this and I had the same issue you had when you turned the engine over to TDC. I didnt understand what was going on and half the time I didnt know what I was doing. I tried to set ignition timing but ended up locking my motor from coolant going into the cylinders. Tore the top end apart, cleaned all my cylinders, doused some Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders so I can check to see if all pistons hit TDC. Im lucky I didnt damage anything since all pistons hit TDC. Eventually Ill be getting around to putting everything back together and set ignition timing.

    This video was great, except for the part where you marked the balancer in the wrong place. That's why it didn't start the first time. The correct timing marks are just to the right of the big groove in the balancer. The groove just indicates where the keyway is. I know this video is old, just figured I would correct it so another 20 people don't follow the wrong instructions.

    Great video, thanks. I just went through similar pain timing up my 302. Turns out that even though it looked like new, the rubber jointing in my Harmonic Balancer was torn so the outer ring with the timing marks was slipping against the inside and the timing marks were moving around all over the place. I put my Harmonic balancer in a vice and could turn the outer part by hand while the inner stayed stationary

    I put a new distributor in my '91 f150 yesterday. No timing light, I've always done it by ear. I always put a twisted paper towel with some oil on it in the threads of #1 because I don't trust my
    "Bumper." Crank by hand,
    as soon as it hits TDC on the compression stroke, POP! Out comes the paper towel.
    You can look down at the balancer and it'll be on the mark.
    (Assuming it's been installed correctly)
    You're better at explaining the process than most people out there. They try to make it more difficult than it needs to be. 👍🤘

    My timing light says to start at 0 on the knob, then set it. I tried that and i don't even hear the detonation when I floor it. So if you put the knob at 12 or 14 is that correct timing if you want 12-14 degrees? Great video btw!

    • @rampage2587
      @rampage2587 5 років тому +3

      If your timing light has a advance knob you put it at the amount of advance you want on the gun. Say ten degrees in the knob. Then by twisting the distributor, you get the 0 degree mark on the balancer to match up with the timing mark on the pointer. This video is for guns without advance knobs I think.

      You check see if it is lousing fuild, also check make sure yournwster pump is not bad or raidator cap, they two dif pumps for a 302 one spins one way and the other goes the other way, bad or wrong pump cause over heating.
      You can also check timing and head gasket. A clogged radiator will aslo cause this issue

      Ya....could be many things. Depends on the situation of your own engine and cooling system. Before I rebuilt my engine, I had constant cooling problems. Replaced rad twice, had coolant leaks...and always had to watch for overheating. When I pulled apart the engine, I saw that someone had used a stopleak product...and it had clogged a good part of the coolant passages in the engine. A shop had flushed my cooling system many times....after I had to replace the rad and replaced the hvac rad several times. FInally discovered the real problem when I opened up the engine. Now it runs incredibly cool....also with a new extreme duty fan clutch (on a 92 F250).

      way I did it puts it TDC and marked it cause as you can see if you watch the video it is not timed right so the way I did it puts it their, you can use this skill on anything with a spinning harmonic balancer or one with out the numbers, the spinning is pretty common when the rubber bushing is bad, as you can see the car started and runs great. cant fix everything by reading a book, but thanks for the comment

    I have a question and thank you for the video. Are there any gas savings from upgrading OEM distributor on a 1990 Lincoln Town car base model Windsor V8 5.0?
    Which systems would be more beneficial and less mechanically complicated for this goal?
    I've also heard of coil on plug systems. I'm a new virgin on an old scene and would appreciate any advice you can give TY.

    • @EricSwanson1
      @EricSwanson1 2 роки тому

      I have an 87 town car. Changing just the distributor on those cars won't give you a lot of benefits in terms of efficiency. The simplest upgrade for efficiency and ease of installation in my opinion is to put a better computer in it. I did that with mine back in the day, but I'm currently in the process of converting the car from efi to carbureted, just to make it a little easier to work on.

    • @dntlss
      @dntlss 2 роки тому +1

      @@EricSwanson1 Not sure why you would do that, the EFI in these cars was very efficient and super easy to work on,87 Town car is a tank, dont get me wrong, a very nice and very comfortable car but a tank none the less but if going carb is your thing then go for it, be interesting to see.

    • @dntlss
      @dntlss 2 роки тому

      I know this is a old comment but i saw you posting something similar on another video, stay away from coil on plugs on these older cars unless you just wanna do it as a experiment, not that there is anything wrong with them but you would be overcomplicating your life,you have a distributor and 8 wires, why have 8 coils??
      Town cars are heavy beasts so they will never have good gas mileage, unless you are trying to use it as a daily or as a taxi cab all you can do is keep it properly tuned, oem Ford distributors that came on these 302s are outstanding believe it or not, i have a few that i will not let go, unless you are running a car with 800 horses and you need a custom ignition system a standard distributor will be optimal,stay away from those MSD units, they are awful, keep your fuel filter changed, your tires properly inflated,air filter and spark plugs clean and you'll be real close to the original gas mileage (15 city 22 on highway i believe)

    • @EricSwanson1
      @EricSwanson1 2 роки тому

      @@dntlss I have a video of it running on my channel. It's a project car and efficiency isn't really the goal. The car sat for 15 years. The wiring got eaten by pack rats and the fuel system was all gummed up with old gas. It was cheaper and simpler to stick an intake, carb, and distributor on it than to buy new injectors and go through all the wiring. I also like the simplicity of tuning a carburetor vs tuning an old injected engine. All I need to tune a carb is a screwdriver. The carb is also a part of a cheap power combo. These 302s were a little choked off from the factory due to emissions regulations and fuel economy goals. I'd rather have a little more power than better fuel economy. Performance EFI setups will make more power than carburetors, but carburetors are cheap for me. A carburetor also won't make a huge difference on its own, but in combination with a few other cheap modifications it works well. The next thing I'm doing is pulling out the AOD transmission and putting in a C6. I might put the AOD back in after I get a kickdown adapter for it and rebuild it.
