    I think what really sold me on this film was how the creature never was depicted as evil or purposely strategic. It really was an otherworldly monster just instinctually hunting. Even the music makes you feel almost majestically epic watching this legendary creature react to the balloon.

      But at the same time, it killed with malice. For example, after swallowing the 40 guests from the show, it kept them alive for hours before squishing them to death. But when it swallowed the biker, it killed him in a couple minutes (using his screams inside as a way to get O.J to look up at it and then crushing him when it realized O.J wasn't taking the bait). It can kill quickly if it wants, or it can drag out your demise for hours or possibly days. Therefore, I think it shows a hint of malevolence

    I like how the thing exploded so violently from a comparatively small balloon. This makes sense because the only way that creature could float in our atmosphere like that is if it's full of hot gas or some sort of pressurized gas that's lighter than air. My favorite part about this scene is that the alien is hesitant to eat the balloon at first. After eating the plastic horse statue, it starts treating anything marked with the kite pennants as inedible, as seen when it stops trying to eat OJ while they tried getting evidence of it existing.
    This balloon is human shaped, meaning it’s shaped like food, but it’s also covered in those kite pennants, which are a warning sign of inedibility to the alien. It hesitates at first… but then decides to eat it anyways, because something that big is too tempting. It didn’t know to just go “nope.”

    One of my favorite movies of all time, and I have unreal respect for one of it's messages: animals are *_WILD_*
    Don't just assume that you've "tamed" an animal. No matter how comfortable you are with a non-domesticated creature, you can NEVER be 100% certain that it won't harm you.

    I loved this movie. But every time I see it, like five times now, it bothers me that the whole time the alien is afraid of the flags. And in the end it just devours a thing dripping in flags. I loved it eating the balloon, I just can't get over the flag part.

    • @stephenbarringer235
      @stephenbarringer235 Рік тому +286

      You could look at it as a question of competing responses at play. The alien has learned that the flags normally indicate something inedible, but it is also instinctively drawn to engulf anything that "looks" at it, and when it has time to weigh its responses (rather than being caught by surprise, the way OJ surprised it with the flag trailer during the chase with Lucky), the instinct ultimately overwhelms the learned response, the same way Gordy the chimp's aggressive instincts overwhelmed what he'd been trained to do by humans.

    • @evonne315
      @evonne315 Рік тому +85

      I was guessing the size of the balloon. It felt it had to eat or be eaten.

    • @PeanutChops
      @PeanutChops Рік тому +139

      I think its more about a competition of territory rather than food. This topic was brought up in the movie by OJ’s father. The balloon resembles the characteristics of JJ - flying, large, and lightweight - but resembles a human. The fact that its covered in flags (the thing Jean Jacket is afraid of) and continuously making eye contact with it. I’d assume Jean Jacket took it as a threat and a competition to his territory

    • @Juggler1525
      @Juggler1525 Рік тому +83

      Remember the decoy? It had flags dangling from it and JJ thought it was food but come to find out it was a fake horse it couldn't digest. Which is why it attacks Jupe and his crows, it had been conditioned to eat horses and got fed a decoy, breaking the "trust" jupe had established. OJ releasing a small chute with flags on it, I feel, was a signal to JJ that this horse could be fake too and rather than trying to eat it again, it bolted. But seeing a "creature" the same size as it taking to the skies, or it's home, instigated a fight for dominance over the territory.

    • @Nightshade923
      @Nightshade923 Рік тому +8

      Calvin couldn’t fly, and it had an actual face with a mouth, as well as flesh instead of a plastic like body. It also had no color, where this things “mouth” is green. They’re also 2 different movie studios so that wouldn’t make sense, and Calvin never took breaks from hunting. It was always moving, eating, and growing. It never stopped like Jean Jacket did in the cloud, and it never took it’s time eating people like Jean Jacket did. Also, Calvin came down to earth as part of a Global Space Station Discovery. There’s no way it would make it’s way from the middle of the ocean to a town in the middle of nowhere without some sort of media covering it. And Calvin never tried to hide for extended periods of time like Jean Jacket did in the cloud. As mentioned before, Calvin was always on the move, and had to physically grab it’s prey, not just suck it up. All in All there’s too much evidence against what you just said
