He was told the accuracy of him dying alone was 96.5% but he changed that. I guess we don’t need much for a significant change and a better outcome. The one who will eventually die alone is the son of the President. IF he was the ONLY survivor (Watch post credits.) The president’s death was 100% accurate probably for being so fuckin selfish. If you guys remember when she called the professor to offer him a seat somehow he knew she left behind her son. 😂
Yes . It was great that he got home at the end. He isn't supposed to , but the scene in the show second time when he bursts out at the stupidity that is happening ,, he says that he wants to go home!! He could not change the course of the comet , but he did change his life and had a peaceful ending
Yep, made me realise how far we have come as a species. How introspective we are about meaning and purpose. How much technology we have created. How much we have expanded. Just the fact that we, a product of evolution, can contemplate evolution, is astounding. If the world were to end today, we really would have had everything we needed.
@@2KOOLURATOOLGaming "Evolution" is a process not an *origin* of complex intelligent life. You looking for the origin of human consciusness it's either a higher non-physical consciusness unconstrained by the physical limitations of the observable Universe (God or Aliens) or just non created randomly waving quantum fluctuations. Evolution didn't "create" anything.
@@javiervasquez625 Bruh, we are a product of what evolution has done so far. Just because it is ongoing doesn't mean that we are not a result. As for consciousness, I simple think it is lots of switches in our head. I'm not sure if I'm missing something in this search for consciousness that we seem to be going through but I'm contempt to think that it is simply a result of a lot of neurons doing a lot of things in a lot of ways, like how a monkey with a pencil and infinite time will eventually write all the digits of Pi. Also, I'm not sure if your comment is criticising me using evolution as a full stop, or if you are a believer and don't agree with evolution.
There are a lot that show the world ending, but most in a cheesy manner at the end of a rather absurd disaster movie. This movie - and a few others, like On The Beach as mentioned by Mdebacle, instead approaches it with more serious contemplation of what it means, and peoples' interactions with it.
It's been a long LONG time since my heart has been touched by a movie, and this one scene where the group is just spending their last moments talking to each other and having one final meal together, that seriously almost brought me to tears
This was the scariest part of the film to me. All of it, just gone. And there was nothing they could do. They just sat and enjoyed each other's company for a few precious moments. Terrified me.
Specially because we think that if something actually happens to us we would either suffer from drowning with the waters and tsunamis or feel the whole process of being burned alive to a crisp, but this movie shows how fast it would actually be and we wouldn't even feel anything.
Plenty they could have Done. Build a space elevator. Build rockets and move into orbit for a few years. Go deep into the earth with enough stuff to live for a few decades.
well the house would probably first have collapsed from the earthquakes probably. if not, they would probably have burned to death from the heat of the ejecta cloud or from the fires it caused. The medior shower cause by the explosion would have heated the atmosphere to oven like temperatures for a few minutes. they might have survived those underground. but then they probably would have died from the poison gasses in the atmosphere. if they had hazmat masks and survived the other stuff, they would probably not be able to grow food because no sun light because of all the dust in the atmosphere and agriculture infrastructure is fucked. so basically you need seeds, soil or hydroponics equipment, grow lights, and electrical generators with steady fuel to grow plants, but thats hard to come by post-apocalypse . its possible some people survive. But no the pressure wave from the blast would not have been that powerful by the time it reached them. makes for an excellent end scene tho
Jesus Christ, this ending hit me like a truck. The scene where they're talking at the table and they run out of things to say so they just try to make things up to distract them from unavoidable doom made me shad a tear. Amazing movie.

you're absolutely right- having a "yaaaaay we did it :)" ending would've completely betrayed the message of the film and just felt saccharine. it would've been dishonest to start pulling your punches at the last possible moment.
That's a great observation. The rest of the world ignores it while there's a lot they could do, and the main characters ignore it once there is nothing more that they can do. This movie is so damn poetic.
also when Randal says there is 99 percent chance that comet hits the earth, it happens, while Peter says there is 96 percent chance that. Randall dies alone and doesn't happen. LMAO
This small group of people have come to term with the fact that the world is ending and they have made peace with themselves and with the Lord. They were not even too scared about death anymore. But this time (Corona) it's the other way around. The people are ignoring the scientists and the government. Also climate change could kill us all in the next decades. Because there won't be enough food and water for all and wars will start for ressources.
@@UtopiansDream also this COVID pandemic is so full of shit. We’ve been in it for 2 years now and they still want more restrictions and boosters shoved up our arses for a virus that only kills old people.
The final scene where everyone tries to chat to hide their fear is really realistic. I went through a situation like that. When I was 6 years old, my mother had a traffic accident at night, the adults in the family were all in the hospital while my mother was having surgery. At home, there were only me and a few cousins. We all knew my mother's situation was very critical but we all deliberately avoided it. We sat all day talking about everything in the world, but during that whole day, fear never disappeared from our voices. They all realized that the other was scared but they pretended it didn't exist. Sadly, my mother did not make it. The last scene of the movie really made me remember the feeling on that terrible day, a feeling of fear that I will never forget. (sorry if there any translate error i use gg translate)
When the house starts to shake and everyone is looking at each other on the verge of tears yet they push on and keep making idle chit chat, that gets me. You can see the fear breaking through, the heartbreak that all of human civilization is coming to an end. They really tried their hardest, but it just wasn't enough in the face of the worst humankind had to offer.
I think it's meant to represent the fear and awkward, idle chit chat that families everywhere have to make at the dinner table, during times of uncertainty, when the world around them seems to be falling apart, and realizing that there is little that can be done but to carry on living with the weight of that uncertainty on their shoulders. Accounting for the film being after all a satirical commentary on the political divisions in this country, that is, I think the film wants us to understand that peoples, domestically in the United States as well as abroad, face these catastrophes very frequently (economic collapse, the pandemic, military conflicts, humanitarian catastrophes, etc), but our inability to communicate across political ideologies prevent us from dealing with this problems, and sooner or later we will face the bitter end to it all (the comet impact) because we failed ourselves in dealing with them. Their dinner is a sad act of resignation, and acceptance of the fact that the world is the way it is, and whatever may come is inevitable because of the way we are.
Realistic for adults who accepted their fate. A large number of Christians would attempt this, we aren’t afraid of dying that much, we know there’s another side as long as you are a believer and ask for forgiveness.
I think I might prefer that to being an older child or adult and fully aware the world is about to end. That baby has no terror at the moment like an older kid would have.
The most unique thing about this film is showing the apocalypse on such a personal perspective without the heroic antics, but just base human emotions of dread, fear, hopelessness that is both beautiful and terrifying.

It's so interesting the fact that if this happened, life would come back fully. Not only would the life deep in the sea survive, it wouldn't even be hurt. The surface would be absolutely crushed, but new lands would form slowly, the surface would cool down, water would settle, and then life would start going to land like it did billions of years ago, maybe even faster, considering there would be already lots of life in the ocean, who would soon populate the entire waters of this planet again, and then dominate the surface faster because there are much more life already, and the surface would be green again. I think after 1-2 billion years later, earth would already have animals and a full eco system without any humans to disturb again. One thing that proves this, is what happens with the dinosaurs, and the destruction that happened with them was much more stronger then this one showed in the movie. Just fascinating.
Depends on the scale. There are civilization killers, great extinction events, and planet killers. From the perspective of the universe, there's nothing sacred about a planet or life on it. But yeah, even if life was extinguished it might arise again in a billion or two years.
Actually, even human civilization could likely survive. Several Cold War missile silos that we know of have been bought and repurposed into housing complexes, and rigging up UV lamps, hydroponics, etc for life support is trivially easy with the tech we have right now. While I'm sure only the rich and powerful would get invites to the "good" bunkers, there's no reason that tens of thousands couldn't survive in North America alone.
Depends really, but extinction level events in the past haven't eradicated all life on the surface. And most organisms were to be knocked out, 1-2 billion years is highly unrealistic considering that requires removing all complex life and in that time span the earth would reach a somewhat inhabitable condition due to the suns expansion
@@SarajevoKyotoTens of thousands aren't human civilization. That's the human *species.* Big difference. If (big if) they are eventually able to emerge, it won't be in a form or network we currently recognize.
@Biscotum Not quite. While modern civilization wouldn't be feasible, each of those bunkers can populate a functioning Bronze Age city quite comfortably. Civilization would survive somewhere. Also, the US government has had "continuity" failsafes since at least the 50s, to ensure that in an apocalyptic scenario (mainly nuclear war, but meteor works too), the survivors could rebuild quickly, sustainably, and recognizable American.
and the worst part of that is that we do politics as if we dont. We hate on other countries and peoples who have nothing, when the moral and wise thing to do is to help them and support them. Even on the Left we criticize slavery that happened 180 years ago on smart phones made by virtual slaves today. Yes we did lose alot of manufacturing in the last twenty years, but we have lifted people out of desperate poverty while having a zero percent unemployment rate. We need to continue this track, to lift all boats, because countries that are not desperately poor are countries that will not send thousands of refugees to us.
We will NEVER see how lucky some of us are. Millions and millions have nothing though and would love more. But the privileged will never ever have enough.
I think what I like most about the movie is that literally no one cares until they can see the asteroid. Hits home the dangerous human mind's needs to see before believing. It's so ingrained in our heads that even the scientists are both shocked and to some extent feel vindicated when they can finally see it.
It is going to suck for the what's left if Humanity, most of the survivors are going to be in Europe especially with all of these "end of the world" bunkers they have.
Well it is kind of like with the day after tomorrow the guy was telling the higher up about the danger and they thought he was crazy and even after the crazy events on Los Angeles they still didn't believe him and wouldn't give access to the satellite. I think people go with the notion of "not in my lifetime" but in the movies when it does happen they deny it is happening I think these disaster movies do a great job depicting that aspect of the human race in the event potential total destruction.
I feel that this was a jab at Donald Trump with his precautions against Covid. Because you can't see the virus, and the fact that Trump was saying everything was all good for months, people believed that and ended up having hundreds of thousands of cases.
Maybe it's just me, but the 1:20 man with the drum was the best comment on the humanity as a whole. Like summing up all our history, beliefs and hubris that characterizes humanity thoughout history. The pinnacle of knowledge of his times, just as effective as nukes, in fight for survival... with a rock. Pure poetry.
I love how they show little clips of animals. Almost every “end of the world” movie shows humans in their last moments but no one considers that animals are also part of the life of this planet.
@@Rada_Rada138 Well, it’s a Netflix movie so the budget wasn’t enough to hire people to film animals themselves. I think that, for the budget, and little cheesiness aside, they did a good effort. Not a perfect movie site but it’s one of those rare cases where a Netflix original movie is actually pretty good.
The thing about this scene that sends chills up my spine is the images it shows as the world is about to end. Love, Beauty, Wildlife, everything that makes this Earth beautiful is all gone.
Our oceans are way too deep and full of organisms that a comet can wipe all the life in it! I guess most of the deep ocean animals on the opposite side of the planet wouldn't even feel a thing.
I love that they're all so terrified they choose to talk about store bought food to take their minds off their impending doom. I imagine most families would do the same thing in that moment. Not wanting to accept that they're about to die, and talking to comfort one another. Best scene in the whole movie.
I think its not like they arent accepting they are going to die, its more like trying to talk about what makes you happy in the last moment instead of being depressed about the incoming doom
I cannot watch this scene without crying my eyes out. This is how it feels as a scientist of any caliber in the modern day, watching it all fall to pieces. I will shed tears just the same in our own moment. We really do have everything.
Really? As a scientist would you not take a broader perspective? Absent of a collision with something that disinfects earth surface completely or rip the planet apart, there is little to fear for life itself. Life on this planet has demonstrated to be extremely resilient for billions of years. Always roared back. Yes, we are fucking up the planet, cause mass extinction,, etc. But even if we started a nuclear war and wipe out our existence and that of many other species in the process, in a million years (or shorter) this planet would again feature the most awesome diversity of creatures and ecosystems imaginable.
I’m not a scientist by any means, but every day I either stand outside or look outside and try to appreciate what’s there. Over the summer I laid down on my deck while my dog played in my yard and it was so quiet and peaceful. The clouds in the sky, the trees with wind blowing through them, the flowers growing not to far away. It was all perfect. I also like counting stars as they appear at night. Me and my brother like making a game of it. Riding our bikes in the front yard until dark and then sitting on the steps counting stars as they get more visible. I was on a bus a few days ago and i remember looking at the snow and how it made everything look like a perfect winter wonderland. Nature heals us, I wish more people could realize that. Climate change makes me feel so devastated and powerless. I’ve come to accept there’s nothing we can do. Small things we can accomplish, but we won’t [and if we ever do] solve it until too much has been lost already. 2030 is our date. I’m scared for what’s to come. I live in a very cold climate, but our winters are getting milder. Last year, there was barely any snow by March. And while everyone else was celebrating, it felt like I was the only one disturbed by this. Everything felt off balance. And birds started migrating back. It was off putting but no one else seemed to even bat an eye. It makes me wonder if snow will stop fallowing here one day. Not to mention storms are getting violent and more frequent. In 2023, the hottest year on record, I could barley stand outside without getting super lightheaded, the intense temperature change from my air conditioned house to the scorching outside was to much. If climate change keeps progressing, will I be able to stand outside at all? Things are getting worse, but no one is even giving it a second thought. We’re moving closer and closer to the planets death and there’s not much we can do as of right now. I keep trying to bring this up to people but I get dismissed every time. “We don’t live near a shore line” “climate change doesn’t affect our country that badly” “it’s just a milder season” but it doesn’t feel that way. And even if it doesn’t affect us specifically, what about the rest of the world? Or the animals? And the plants? Over the summer I went to a museum where there was an exhibit that showed every species that had went extinct since 8:30 that morning. I was there at 11 and there were over 100 gone. Reduced to nothing. Please. Please go take in the world around you. We really don’t know when it will be gone. We really do have everything. I don’t understand why people are so insistent on taking that away.
the entire movie they've been in fear and cried and acted on anxiety and been in some kind of panic. The final moments are just a calm dinner. One of the best endings to a film I've seen
How many on earth are already living, day after day, like they did in those last few minutes? All was given, now all will be taken. The End. My question can be construed many ways. How you take the question and the answer you give is your own and yours alone.
Leo's character isn't calm. He isn't hysterical like his is in other scenes, but no one is calm. He's fidgety and looks anxious. There is simply nothing they can do.
I honestly like the clip of the crowd at the start. If the world were to end by meteor strike, I could totally see crowds of people gathering around the crash sight for their final moments
My boy was born 01-01-2020, in 2019 I was quiet optimistic about the future. Going forward 2 years on its getting harder and harder to keep that same optimistic view, now look at it a looming war in the east and west. Pre 2000's is where life was good, when we gave a damn.
The ending of this movie isn't what scared me given that this scene was downright terrifying. What really scares me is that this could legitimately happen irl given the chaotic state of the world
I mean realistically, the odds are against this happening in our lifetime, even tho in the end I guess that doesn’t really matter. But I’m a firm believer that nasa or someone truly does have or is developing something to stop a situation similar to this.
But it does already happen! The whole film is an allegory of the climate crisis and the governments (with a focus here on the US government), who don't want to do anything about it and only care to make themselves richer by ignoring an invisible threatening who nevertheless is present and get's even more threatening with time.
One point showing the tremendous attention to detail in this sequence: the impact occurs off the coast of Chile and the atmospheric shock wave radiates out from there but some time before its arrival the house shakes from an earth tremor as the seismic disturbance through the core of the planet makes it there sooner. This gives them some final moments to reflect on their loss before the blast hits them.
A real attention to detail is how this is hardly likely to happen. We can see out into space thousands of miles. Realistically we would just hit the asteroid out of the way as we did for the last two that came close to earth.
@@bcount1 You are so wrong about that on so many levels. Remember the meteor that flew over and burnt up over russia in 2013? we didnt see it coming. what makes it even luckier for us is the fact that if it were to have come at a slightly steeper angle it could have killed thousands. We simply dont know where EVERYTHING is. yes we know where LOTS of near earth objects are but we 100% dont know where everything is because of how dark they are or because how how bright the sun is
@@bcount1 They saw it from far away in the movie and had a plan that would have successfully destroyed the asteroid. But a tech CEO discovered lots of valuable metals on the asteroid, so the mission was canceled, and a new mission was planned to use experimental mining robots to break up the asteroid so the metals could be used on earth. Being experimental technology, the mining robots failed, and at that point the asteroid was too close to earth to be stopped. But the rich had a back up plan, them and a bunch of their friends got on a ship in cryo to travel to another solar system. They landed on the planet and were killed by alien animals in the credits scene.
After watching Don’t Look Up, I definitely had a strong reaction to the ending. The movie is a satire that really drives home how human apathy, political incompetence, and media distractions can lead to disastrous consequences. By the time the comet is about to hit, I could feel a sense of inevitability and frustration, as the characters’ warnings were ignored or downplayed throughout the film. The ending is both darkly comedic and tragic, highlighting how people fail to take action on important issues until it’s too late. It felt like a sharp commentary on how we handle real-world crises like climate change or even global pandemics, where it sometimes feels like we’re more focused on distractions than on what truly matters. The way the film ends-with the comet’s impact, and the fates of the characters-was powerful. It made me reflect on our society’s tendency to avoid confronting uncomfortable truths. It’s an uncomfortable ending that feels both absurd and painfully real at the same time.
The dinner scene made the movie for me. The short freeze frames, flashes of life, the body language when Mindy holds his son's shoulder and he looks back at him in fear. The short quips about silly little things like store bought vs. homemade. And the last line Mindy says, "we really did have everything didn't we?" was a real kick in the balls. We don't appreciate what we have until its gone.

Then the tone darkens and we, like the rest of the characters, finally start to take it seriously and the fear slowly rushes in. The line that Leo more or less ad-libbed. The prayer from the lad that had gone before it was a beautiful one, but it did not say "thank you" to God ... but some diCaprio knew that that needed adding. No Christian is going to say that we DID have everything (not least because of 1 John 5:19), but all of us would say that the potential to have everything (or pretty much) was always there...
This ending is a masterpiece. Impact - last moments of animals- last moments of humans - the giant tsunami seen from space - the last moment with loved ones. Very powerful..
The whole movie really emphasized the pure truth: - how politicians are telling lies - how powerful technology bilionaires are - the privilege of rich people - the ignorance of people about scientific threats
I was in complete awe at this scene. After a Rollercoaster of comedy and satire, the fact that they played the ending straight was gut wrenching. This is going to be a scene taught in film classes for decades to come.

This movie's ending has got to be one of the most hauntingly accurate depiction of facing death head-on. When everyone is running and panicking, they are just there in the table, idly chatting about life and all it could offer one last time. Until the end where they have come to the complete realization that death is an imminent occurrence, finding comfort in each other while whole-heartedly accepting their doom while the music gradually increases in it's resonance as the world shakes; after that, the world's gone silent, and as the piano pours it's emotion of nothingness completely consuming the atmosphere's noise, then come the destruction. The movie might had a satirical tone but the ending just pulls it off to such a remarkable degree that the obvious message were delivered beautifully and leaving the audience speechless. One of the most eye-opening movies that kept people entertained.
I still have issue with interstellar spacecraft they had in the end though. They were launching shuttles and missiles before but they suddenly jumped technically ahead with a craft they couldn't possibly have launched given its size, along with cryogenics.
@@questworldmatrix As realistic the comet is, I think the directors just had a little bit of fun with that portion of the movie. I have no knowledge of cryogenics and how it could preserve humans from such prolonged period of time so I obviously don't know how it would work even if it did exist, they might had just added it in a joke to reflect on the rich people's fate that when you ruin people's lives with greed, you'll eventually see yourself in the same position. With the instant lunching of shuttles though, I would reckon that the directors did such a thing to present to us the part of the last humans inhabiting the new planet, and without that I guess the movie would have been more ambiguous and open-ended for the audience which is still could have been fine but they obviously wanted to make fun to it as a conclusion. It's a satirical movie at it's core and that scene could be the movie's punchline. It's oddly ironic that when those people landed on the habitable planet, it kinda reminded me of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden but instead of repopulating the 'new earth' they got killed in a few minutes which is hilarious on my opinion.
The acting in this scene was amazing, you could see the characters trying to compose themselves with the fear almost breaking through every now and then. It’s a powerful scene.
Idk if I'm overanalyzing but my favorite detail about this scene is how he's holding the coffee mug at the end. He has his hand on the hot part not by the handle, almost like a last bit of comfort/distraction, a little warmth, the very thing that brought life in the first place.
Definitely not overanalyzing. Most shots in a movie are hand crafted to evoke specific feelings, this is the last shot of the movie filmed in slow mo with a high tech camera. It would have even more planning than usual.
When they first discovered the comet the people that knew about it when on scene their camera would be shakey and kinda zoomed in to show fear and anxiety but when the camera is on regular oblivious people its like a normal movie scene if that makes sense
people holding warm drinks induce "warm" feelings in viewers. teddy was alone at the dinner, so the cup of coffee was his only friend. earlier in the movie, there are at least 2 references to "this technology is the friend we need" ref 1 at the "bash liif presentation" at 0:25:30 - "all of my life's work, really i see, has been driven by an inexpressible need for a friend, who would understand and soothe me." "if i feel sad, afraid, or alone ..." 0:56:20 "lot of fear out there ... parents dont know what to say to their kids ..." "your words are a great comfort to our viewers ..." "whenever i feel afraid or alone in this, i think of you, and i just feel better" ref 2 01:18:40 "And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, one of our scientists can be that friend we all need to lean on during uncertain times." its also a personality test. in times of stress, some people prefer company (neurotic types, dependent, followers), and some people prefer solitude (psychotic types, free, leaders).
The editing in this particular moment of the movie is stunning, I love how they leave those frozen frames for almost a second and then those changes in the camera angle, where you can clearly notice the fear they're feeling but the chilling dialogue about the coffee remains on the background. Not to mention the jump cuts of the whole world facing its end. From all the Apocalypse Movies I've seen before, none of them have showed the end of the world in an unique way like this film does.
it's because the end of the world was never so close as it was now. Yeah nuclear war during the 80s was scary, but all we had to do to avoid that, was literally do nothing. We didn't gave to take action. It was a simple inaction. Simply don't press the red button. Climate change (the comet) requires direct action. Action that isn't happening. when it ends, it will be like this.
To me the movie isn’t about the world ending but it portrays a frighteningly realistic picture of how our governments would react and the amount they would do if this were to actually happen.
@@lucksray my guy, the world literally ends in the movie. It's not solely about the world ending, it's about how our world will end in a completely preventable way, because of corrupt and ineffectual governments.
This ending made the movie for me. I didn't think the satire and serious parts blend in very well. But the climax here was fantastic. It was beautiful. Not only despair and chaos like most disaster movies. The audience gets a last remainder of everything that exists of good in the world as all is coming to an end.
This ending is so artisitc, the slow motion, the sudden shots of life, then changing back to the comet. Such a terrifying way Earth could be obliterated. And rhe fear in their eyes, such amazing acting. Definitely one of the better movies released by Netflix this year.
I think that an underground bunker for humans are enough for humanity to survive. But as depicted in this movie, nobody give a [REDACTED] about shelters whatsoever.
@@jamesmmcgill I'm sorry to say but a bunker just wouldn't work. The comet that hit in this movie was 9 to 10 km wide. And it was travelling at insane speeds. The shock of the impact would destroy everything 1000 metres or so underground. Unless you have a bunker that goes so deep, to rhe point of reaching our planets core, then we might survive. But in this scenario they simply couldn't or didn't have enough time to build such a deep structure. And plus they didn't give a fuck anyway lmao.
That slow motion effect at the end of the house cracking was eerie and then all of a sudden the blast is thrown at us. If you had to die with the world ending, that sure as hell is as instant as it gets. Only the horror of waiting for it to hit would unsettle. This movie was way better than I thought it would be
The milliseconds you see at the end are more of an alagory about our existence in the universe. Our entire culture and civilization is like a speck of dusk, in the eternity of time in the universe. If we can't come together to face larger threats like this, then maybe we don't deserve to exist.
There is something strangely peaceful about this ending. They know that the world is ending while they eat, but they realize that they can no longer do anything and the end is inevitable. He hoped for an ending where the government recapped and destroyed the asteroid at the last minute and a happy ending. But the more the plot progressed, the more was the despair that the scientists transmitted to me when not being listened to. This movie made me wonder ... What am I going to do the day the world ends?
A movie that brought tears to my eyes. Not because of the characters passing, but because of the message this movie displays about how we can save our planet but our ignorance and arogance will be our downfall.
It also adds up about being grateful of what you have and what you have been blessed with. It's the same thing as meeting your death in different ways possible. That's why they included a prayer there.
The dialog around dinner is so well written...it not only demonstrates how they try not to delve in the face of fear by just talking about food, but they're slowly realizing the little moments that they soon will depart with, the trival conversations between bought and home made, the fine tastes of coffee, tea, or pie. These are things we would argue for hours on what would be for dinner, but they're embraced. Not only that but there's a room of unlikely people who wouldn't be in the same room on pedigree, beliefs or emotions, but they knew they need comfort in each other.

This movie is just different from others. While other disaster/apocalypse movies end with the main characters/family saving themselves or trying to save the world,in this movie it just ends fast and clean as it would likely be in real life
While the majority of this movie was a hilarious satire of modern society, media, and politics. This ending was surprisingly very powerful and beautifully executed. The idea of just simply enjoying your final moments of life at the dinner table with your loved ones, while the world around you collapses and dies makes this ending absolutely unforgettable. Rarely have world-ending films depict the demise of Earth in such a calm, heart-warming, yet haunting way.
@@after_midnight9592 Adam McKay's (the director) mother is a born again Christian, and a big part of Timothee Chalamet accepting the role was that he wanted his character to have some "heart." the man in ceremonial dress dancing and playing the drum has this timeless feeling to me, like they've been waiting on this day for centuries and it finally arrived
It honestly calms me. The strength to be able to greet the end with such, I dunno, enthusiasm? Say what you want about culture and religion but it has its benefits.
You can sense that every one of them is terrified but none of them wants to show it and ruin that last moment. They spent those last moments being comforted and holding each other and had a far more fulfilling end than most of the earth.
Plus the first 37 seconds of the score and the impact footage gives that haunting/terrifying feeling and then you transition to the calm dinner conversation makes it even more terrifying.
Wtf do you mean "you can sense " it? That's what the scene was about. That's like saying you can sense that people were scared from the meteors because they were running and screaming
It’s almost as if he was accepting it. They all were. The people at the table and the guy dancing understood they couldn’t do anything and the only way to truly die well was to accept their fate
The chicxulub asteroid that killed the dinosaurs is said to have traveled so fast and at such an angle that the pressure front ahead of it started to excavate the crater before it even hit. Supposedly it punched a hole in the atmosphere and debris from the impact (including dinosaur remains) were sucked out into the vacuum of space and spread far and wide. To the Dino’s witnessing the event, the day would have been nice and clear one second and gone the next.
I absolutely love the ending. For the the entire movie, I was concerned they would give me the cliche "somehow the last explosive destroys the asteroid and everyone is safe and sound" but instead we got a very realistic ending. Yes, it was heartbreaking, but it's exactly how I would imagine things to occur in real life. Mad respect.
One of my favorite parts of this scene is the musical choices. At the beginning, we the viewer are looking at it as it begins, loud, almost glorious music playing in the background to represent the literal planetary scale. Then, we are brought into the scene and hear them talking about nothing to calm themselves as best they can and the music stops, almost like they’re doing their best to keep it from their mind’s eye. Then, the table starts shaking, and the music is heard again. This time, it’s less shock, and more, acceptance in a way, more just taking it all in in a beautiful way while more shots of various people and things play out. Then, we are finally taken back to the table, where the music persists, because they know the end is nigh, and they can’t help but know it anymore. Which is also why he says, “we really did have everything didn’t we?”. He’s come to terms with it, in fact, they all have, they just have to wait now, there’s nothing more to do after all, but wait.
This scene was so beautiful, but simultaneously gave me a deep, intense feeling of anxiety. I was imagining what it would feel like to know it was all about to end, to sit there in your last moments.
I don’t even know how I’m going to deal with it when my time comes in this life, if I even get the time to get to think about it. Like how do you sum up a whole life of memories in your last moments or know what to think about?
1:20 hits so hard, man. In the moments before, there’s pure chaos, the world in shambles as everyone realizes that it’s their final moments, and suddenly, silence. We see someone, standing alone above a flame-ravaged valley, banging their drum, but we never hear it. Completely unflinching in the face of death. We’re put into their moment of peace, their silent world. Proud and happy to do one last beautiful thing before it’s all gone.

“We really did have everything, didnt we..”
Yes, we do, and we take it for granted everyday.
not enough. interstellar heights must be achieved
And now we're facing nuclear annihilation
Not we. The majority of people on earth don’t.
and the worst part of that is that we do politics as if we dont.
It's so ingrained in our heads that even the scientists are both shocked and to some extent feel vindicated when they can finally see it.
uh huh that doesnt really explain the whole religion thing though does it?
What's your endgame here TheEpere15?
It is going to suck for the what's left if Humanity, most of the survivors are going to be in Europe especially with all of these "end of the world" bunkers they have.
Well it is kind of like with the day after tomorrow the guy was telling the higher up about the danger and they thought he was crazy and even after the crazy events on Los Angeles they still didn't believe him and wouldn't give access to the satellite. I think people go with the notion of "not in my lifetime" but in the movies when it does happen they deny it is happening I think these disaster movies do a great job depicting that aspect of the human race in the event potential total destruction.

@@gaylord_focker YES!
It was a movie that really hit me . As it seemed more logical we may end up this way
One point showing the tremendous attention to detail in this sequence: the impact occurs off the coast of Chile and the atmospheric shock wave radiates out from there but some time before its arrival the house shakes from an earth tremor as the seismic disturbance through the core of the planet makes it there sooner.

Being experimental technology, the mining robots failed, and at that point the asteroid was too close to earth to be stopped. But the rich had a back up plan, them and a bunch of their friends got on a ship in cryo to travel to another solar system. They landed on the planet and were killed by alien animals in the credits scene.
@@bcount1 Armageddon wasn’t actually a documentary.

The acting in this scene was amazing, you could see the characters trying to compose themselves with the fear almost breaking
through every now and then.

When they first discovered the comet the people that knew about it when on scene their camera would be shakey and kinda zoomed in to show fear and anxiety but when the camera is on regular oblivious people its like a normal movie scene if that makes sense
people holding warm drinks induce "warm" feelings in viewers.
teddy was alone at the dinner, so the cup of coffee was his only friend.
earlier in the movie, there are at least 2 references to "this technology is the friend we need"
ref 1 at the "bash liif presentation" at 0:25:30 - "all of my life's work, really i see, has been driven by an inexpressible need for a friend, who would understand and soothe me."
"if i feel sad, afraid, or alone ..."
0:56:20 "lot of fear out there ... parents dont know what to say to their kids ..."
"your words are a great comfort to our viewers ..."
"whenever i feel afraid or alone in this, i think of you, and i just feel better"
ref 2 01:18:40 "And who knows? Maybe, just maybe,
one of our scientists can be that friend we all need to lean on during uncertain times."
its also a personality test. in times of stress, some people prefer company (neurotic types, dependent, followers), and some people prefer solitude (psychotic types, free, leaders).
I knew I wasn't the only one who noticed this.
Yes, it was heartbreaking, but it's exactly how I would imagine things to occur in real life. Mad respect.
It would have been hilarious if it had just burned up in the atmosphere like in The Simpsons.
The whole premise of the movie was "If we fuck arond, we will die"
The characters in power fucked around
The next step was obvious
Jonah Hill's character survived, which means they could have survived if they went underground.
I do too. Humanity got what it deserved.

I felt the same too... It's really sad
I consider that the most freeing way to start my day. Every moment could be our last. Enjoy your coffee.
It is very scary and sad to think about
our lifetimes are potentially humanity's last moments, if shit keeps going the way it is
I don’t even know how I’m going to deal with it when my time comes in this life, if I even get the time to get to think about it.
Proud and happy to do one last beautiful thing before it’s all gone.

this Ending sent shivers down my spine. In just a couple of seconds, everything is gone… all life, all nature, everything we as humanity have built in thousands of years of history, every single thing on this world Gone, within a blink of an eye…. We need to be better than this…
Cosmic terror in its maximum expression
And all because of a person who wanted to get a little richer. People need to stop caring about freaking money for once and care about actual lives. Life is freaking priceless and shouldn't be lowered from that point.

You live your life passively, defining yourself by the things you consume and series you watch and by what is TOLD YOU by the algorithm. our current system, as a mode of material production, created our culture and our personal life.
The ideology of our system is more than a set of ideas about how the world works, it's a world view, a frame that puts things in context while it remains invisible.
You are convinced that the world is static, that history has already happened and whatever is happening now is happening out there beyond us. The spectacle tells you to sit back and enjoy the show of your life and accept everything as it comes. The truth is that you are separated from the world, yourself and others. You have lost the capacity to think through the complexity of a changing society and can’t notice how the meaning and consequences of facts, events and objects aren't fixed, but on the contrary, it arises from the relationships to other facts, events and objects.
Lamentably here you are predicating the end of the world while eating popcorn, because you think there is nothing left to be done. Your only consolation as the lights deem will be, I told you so, it was inevitable.
