  • Easy Hawaiian Slack Key guitar/hula songs
    Hi, it's Harry Koizumi again,
( Hawaiian guitar and Hawaiian ukulele teacher)
This is song 2 of Raymond Kane's Five Song Medley. It is a fun one to learn. Enjoy.
I’m playing a Carvin AC375 Thinline True Acoustic Electric Guitar. They recently changed their name to Kiesel Carvin Guitars. Carvin / Kiesel are cool guitars because you can build to order right on their site. There is a great Hawaiian connection, Kiesel was started as a Hawaiian Steel guitar company in 1946. I’ve been playing Carvin guitars for over 35 years. Check them out at www.carvinguitars.com.
    John Pearse Strings!

Thank you for posting Harry. If I lived in Hawaii I'd sign up for lessons with you.

Aloha, I like your easy 'laid-back' approach to teaching slack key guitar. I have been playing longer than I wish to admit to, but your approach and lessons are inspiring, thanks Harry may they continue.

    Harry,
Interesting happening this morning as I picked puakenikeni flowers. I kept hearing the first 3 phrases of Papakolea in my head. At first I tried not hearing it, but the phrases played over & over in my head, louder & louder as I tried harder not to hear.
When picking puakenikeni was pau I went inside, but the repitition of phrases 1-3 didn't stop. Then the 1st "aha" hit me & I got my guitar and practiced 1-3 then 1-4:) I concentrated on timing accents better & smoothing transitions out. I felt improvement happening, but my eyes, mind and hands wouldn't sync right no matter how much concentration.
Then "aha" #2 happened. I was compelled to close my eyes and play. OMG, my hearing got clearer, the rhythm & beat slowed to a trance like sensation and everything started to click...I could play mostly ok without looking. My fingers moved like silk... sure & smooth. I was FEELING the music like how you played it in your video. I felt like Ray was there showing me a secret! WOW:-D
Real chicken skin vibe. I just completed Papakolea including the transition form Kealoha to Papapakolea and back into Kealoha. Mahalo nui Ray & Harry:))

Hello, I'm a complete beginner and I'm looking at Taylor GS Mini's as they look very appealing to me. Is a guitar like this suitable to play Hawaiian slack key guitar? Also, is one type of wood for the top of a guitar better than another, specifically for slack key? Sitka Spruce vs Koa? Thanks.

Yes, Taylors are made well! Pick the one that fits your hand and sounds good to your ears!
Has to also look good to you that you'd like to pick it up and play daily! It's like fingerprints!
Not one guitar can be the same and that's a good thing! :)
