    Wow! Crazy to see how strong the Celeste community stays after all this time. Maddy Thorson actually went to the same college I'm at now, taking the same program as me too. The professors are the same too, so I got to hear some cool stories! I once even met a former employer of Maddy who owned a local game studio here, but that one no longer exists as Cameron went to co-found Beamdog in a nearby city. Maddy doesn't live here anymore as far as I understand though, I think somewhere in Vancouver now?
    Now I'm looking to get into indie game development too, and have made lots of small game jam entries, but still working out the plan for a first full Steam release. I'm already a registered Steam developer, I just need to MAKE the game.

      @@OandCoGames Yeah! Cam's a great guy too, he and John Gallagher (a concept artist who works on some major projects including The Boys and major Marvel releases, but he apparently knew Cameron and had a lot of influence on Beamdog's style of games, including their remaster of Baldur's Gate) both cosigned a box of the Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear Collectors Edition to gift to me, likely making it a one-of-a-kind collectible too!
      Funny enough, I didn't learn that Maddy went to the college here until AFTER I made my first game, which was directly inspired BY Celeste. I entered it into a local contest here, which was being judged by the professors who teach at the college here, and the one told me that my game reminded him of one a former student made, saying that as he pulled up the (formerly) mattmakesgames page, with a big Celeste plastered right in the middle. That was the moment I knew I had to pursue this.

    And the best part is..... PEOPLE ARE ALREADY MODDING THIS GAME! JUST IMAGINE THE POTENTIAL THIS SHIT HAS! Specially when OG Celeste already got some insane mods like Strawberry Jam. As for Celeste 64 one day becomming a full feature-length game.... I doubt it, since they're already working on Earthblade as their next big project.

    • @OandCoGames
      @OandCoGames  9 місяців тому +12

      True true. And honestly I want Earthblade before feature-length Celeste64. It's just amazing to me that they casually created one of the most fluid and responsive 3D platformers I've ever played. I'm glad the modding community is picking this up.

    literally for a week, this team pulled off an incredible little game. considering that this is their very first 3D game, they did so many cool and innovative things aaaaaaa. like the movement feels perfect, the level design is tough like the 2d game, there's dialogue, original music, several levels made, 3d models that bring the essence of the 2d game effortlessly in 3d. it also... like took me a couple of hours to beat and get 28 strawberries (I know there are 30 but I don't replay games when I feel I've completely milked it dry of content), which that amount of replayability shows how much mastery they have over the craft of game dev. Very impressive, always excited for the future games of devs of popular indie games.

    I mean, I feel like I have to say it. I've been thinking about getting into "video-essays" recently, I have a channel all about game design that I used to use for housing clips of games I was working on for college and what not that I've been meaning to repurpose, and I've had a few ideas for topics to use. One of which came when *I* played Celeste 64, a video on the topic of why it doesn't work.
    Now, don't get me wrong, the game is visually stunning, the music is great and I LOVE the callbacks to Mario Sunshine, one of my favourite 3D platformers of all time. A lot of the supporting mechanics such as berries, cassettes and whatnot all also carry over really nicely and I love the new takes on their behaviours. The player's movement and camera controls, however, left a LOT to be desired for me. I may just be used to actual celeste's mechanics with the hours I've spent constructing a custom map over the past year, and I have many many hours in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Odyssey, two games I hold highly for camera control and have a lot of muscle memory in.
    A lot of my issues have an aspect of bias to them, though I find that to be reason enough for me to comfortably say I do *not* think this translation was perfect. (People are entitled to their own opinions, I am not god nor do I wish to be god so pls think for yourself thx :3)

      @@konsth191 I don't know about their experience, but I played it with a keyboard, which seems like an afterthought considering the gamepad-specific button prompts, and had a terrible time with the camera. This video makes controlling the camera look smooth and easy. I also seemed to have a much harder time judging my position in space than in other 3D platformers, though I'm not sure what's the cause of that.
      Edit: okay, I just replayed it for a bit and concluded that it could REALLY use an automatically rotating camera. And I guess the flat colors of all the platforms may be to blame too? In any case, I just kept wildly misjudging the position of platforms, to the point where I initially thought that some platforms are genuinely intangible as some form of troll gimmick. I guess it's "nostalgic" alright - taking me back to the time when I didn't know how to play platformers.

    The game is quite flawed and a little junky. I love it and it has a lot of the charm of the original. It truly is a love letter to the series. But it really doesn't hold a candle to the original.
    I got all the 30 strawberries on my first go, I even found the Demo car and the crazy 2-dash strawberry by myself. Trust me, I really liked it. But I would be lying if I said that it wasn't perfect by a long shot.
    It truly is a miracle they were able to make something so good in a week, though
    The level design was by far the best part. They truly made the best use of the junky gameplay. But this game is a truly living example as to why platformer games need a good camera and why some control of the camera is automated in most games....

    • @OandCoGames
      @OandCoGames  9 місяців тому

      Yeah, maybe I should use the word "masterfully" instead. You're right, it's far from perfect. There's a lot they can do to improve it, but they're just so solid in staying true to the original and playing into N64 tropes while also being deliberate in the gameplay. It feels like the exact approach game companies should be taking to translate 2D titles into the 3D space. Albeit just the first steps if they're to pursue a feature-length.

    • @baggelissonic
      @baggelissonic 9 місяців тому

      @@OandCoGames Yeah, what this really needs is polish. The core is very solid. The level design is so good. But I don't know if this has wbat it takes to be anything more than a one time novelty. While the abstract space the floating platforms exists make sense considering how most 3d N64 platformers were and the dream like nature of the game.... but... if they wanted to make a full game they would need to have a more coherent environment for wach stage more like banjo kazooie tham sm64.
      Hinestly, my buggest problem is how junk it is to turn and how the camera is not helpful at all. That's the only thing I reslly hope they fixed...

      Yeah that word "perfect" jumped out at me too. The original Celeste is a tough act to follow and I would hardly expect them to perfectly pull off the transition to 3D in a week when industry legends haven't stuck the landing on a full dev cycle. There's some noticeable flaws with the player controller here. Movement doesn't feel as consistent, I frequently found myself doing things I did not intend when climbing in particular, and the camera motion kinda gave me a mild headache. I found myself getting frustrated in places where I did not with the original. But I'm hoping modders can deliver on that extra polish if Maddy herself doesn't come back to it.

      Oh interesting. I actually really enjoyed the camera. It felt super intuitive. Perhaps it's my play style influencing things, I'm constantly fiddling with the camera when I play 3D games. I did notice though that the camera doesn't automatically move or snap to anything. It always stayed right at the angle and distance I left it. I'll bet that's something they didn't worry about changing since they only had a week to build it. Maybe in a more refined version of the game, they'd implement some automatic camera movements depending on locations, movement, etc.
