I was a intern for this show when Jerry made this skit. This actually only took him on take to do and the entire cast and crew could not stop laughing behind the set. Probably my fondest moment on that show.
No kidding. Maybe a week before he died I had just finished watching the entire series of Coach, and after I found out I was like "well, guess I have to do that again... for Luther"
I saw him do this in Reno way back when. Thought I would die trying to get my breath laughing. I think Jerry must have been an undiagnosed maniac. A very funny maniac. Best laugh I ever had.
Clipity clippity clop, just moveing on. The song in itself, is goofy. Hillbillys are , a funny breed. the hat, Everyone explains things, to there children difrently. So much content in this skit... u can't stop, laughing!!!!! I'm 60 years old, an still frail. This is real comedy. I needed this, thank u for posting.
LMAO 'it may sound inhumane but the donkey's weren't that excited about going west.' Just saw this on Yes Dear today (6/24/10) The song part is the best! Made my day.
This is Jerry Van Dyke's most famous routine from his niteclub act that originally also included his Lone Ranger & Tonto and tells you the age of the bit. He's performed Mule Train for decades to the landmark Frankie Laine/Mitch Miller recording. Like the vaudeville routines that were performed hundreds of times by Abbott & Costello and Lewis & Martin and then recreated on film this shows how experience really can't be replaced.
If I remember right. He didn’t plan this to be filmed. He did it to entertain the kids between takes. The camera guy got wind of what was going on and told everyone to keep an eye on Jerry. When he did this he filmed it. You can hear people laughing. That was the cast and crew and what was left of the audience.
wow.. this is hilarious.. i've never seen this show and just turned it to family guy and caught the end.. I'm going to teach my son to do this for his talent show if they ever one! no matter the age, this is great!
About five or six ago was the first time I saw this part of the video. I LMFAO at that time. I was looking for it, never find it. I saw "Whip" by Devo today and it reminded me about this video. Thank you!!!
Dang I loved your post. I'm the exact same with my own nieces and nephews (big family). They are still all so young so I get to play this "idiot" role and they die laughing and so do I. You Rock because you understand how being a "big ole grown up" doesn't mean you have to stop being silly at times just to tickle the kids. One of the best posts I have ever seen. My best to the both of you. Awesome.
I keep trying to go on and do something else but I cant help but play this clip over and over. And I STILL laugh every time! X-D I especially love the parts where he tells and joke and everyone starts laughing but the 3 boys, who just kinda stare at him LOL I'm gonna have this song stuck in head for the rest of the day. . . ^_^
His Mule Train bit was much funnier -- and more energetic -- back in 1973 while on The Tonight Show. What made it even funnier was the size of the mule doll used. I remember it as being tiny. Much smaller than the one used in Yes, Dear. While doing the bit, Jerry accidentally bumped the mule's little stand, sending the mule to the floor. He calmly got off his chair, walked around to the fallen mule which was now on its side, and continued on with his bit, whipping the little mule while it was on the floor. Hilarious!
i'm going to do this with my cousins. the smallest one can be the mule and i will make one of the small wips and play the music. WAGONS HO! gety yup, tom!

Jerry is brilliant....this always makes me laugh. Whenever I'm feeling down, I watch this clip!!!
this is a very underrated bit, one of my all time faves from a random weird sitcom that people only watched on tbs after school reruns
yes dear, still standing (just finished binging it), grounded for life, god the sitcoms in the 2000s were the best, and so underrated
The cast and crew mush have been dying while "trying" to film this lol. Love it.
R.I.P Jerry van Dyke
Look just like his brother
I saw Jerry Van Dyke do this "Mule Train" performance live, way back in 1972. He was performing in Phoenix. He also played terrific banjo back then

Tell your grandkids this is 2000 Mules.

@NeverLivedALie Yeah. I rewound and watched it 4 more times then searched it online so I could watch it again.
I remember when this actually aired and we laughed so hard that my wife wet her pants.
The funniest he ever was, to me, is when he did, "Forgive Me, John". He played both roles in the song.
Why is it so dark? Did you have your brightness down?
this is very funny
RIP, Jerry.
It’s all about timing.
I’ll always know him as Luther van dam

ROFL Every.Single.Time! hahaha

Try finding Jerry VanDyke doing the Lone Ranger and he plays each part---Tonto, etc. As seen on Ruth Lyons 50/50 club back in the 1960's
i'm going to do this with my cousins. the smallest one can be the mule and i will make one of the small wips and play the music. WAGONS HO! gety yup, tom!
