It's always tense in bands like that when they get big. The media basically concentrate on the singer/songwriter of the band. Everyone contributes something to the band, but one person gets asked all the questions and his/her answers get listened to. That person, at least back before everyone just stole music, made a lot more money from the songwriting credits usually, which could add to it. And the thing is, most laid back, unassuming people just don't have the ego required to drive something like that forward. They just don't. That's why a lot of people in history who we think of as 'great' weren't great because they were really nice people. They were 'great' because they were willing to basically push their thing forward to success, and inevitably other people get stepped on and/or destroyed in the process. And every member of a big band will end up with a halo of sycophants around them, telling them that they are really the person who matters most in the band, or that they are not appreciated as much as they should be, and so forth. These people can't control you until they've disconnected you from the people who got you there. Throw in the fact that almost every popular band is made up of people who are too young to have the life experience to really deal gracefully with these types of situations. And all they have to do is hold out their hands and someone will happily fill it with whatever drug they want. It's pretty much a perfect storm, which is why the number of really big bands that stay together for decades with the original members, or almost all of them, is really quite small. There is that thing where the first cousin of the last guy still alive from the original band takes the name and goes on tour, but that's not the same thing.
I used to work with a set of identical twins who looked and acted exactly like D'arcy Wretzky. Same mannerisms, awkwardness, same color blond hair, build, etc. I bet if you compared their DNA to D'arcy Wretzky they shared a common ancestor. The messed up part is both of the twins ended up as train wrecks just like D'arcy: One stole a bunch of money using someone else's ATM card (caught on video; no one believed it). The other walked out on her husband, moved in with her sister, and left her entire family behind. I would say genetically, D'arcy Wretzky had demons and couldn't deal with them. Just like the two twins I worked with, I'm sure D'arcy got used to getting everything she wanted handed to her and was never told "no" or ran into hardship until much later in life. I don't know much about D'arcy's childhood but that is why it's so important for parent(s) (that's right, plural) to keep their kids grounded.
I used to think like Billy about not having to be inspected by someone due to gender but having see as I have grown how so many females are talked down their whole lives to the point that some things just stop being a possibility in their heads altogether, has shown me why representation has an impact and the fact D’Arcy represents something important to so many people tells you more about what’s going on around those people that one might realise
i was just thinking how nothing has changed, like Billy said, it shouldn't have to be that way, that you have to acknowledge that it's a woman, but it still is. we still have to cheerlead women in all forms.
Being in a band is like being in a marriage and sometimes the relationship goes sour and it's best to end it. Fans wanting the original lineup is understandable but it's also like in-laws trying to get divorced couple back together again even when the relationship is poisonous.
i fully agree.. I haven't seen them but from the live footage, she's pretty solid. a good bass player knows it's not about sticking out and showing off with trippy over-the-top riffs, it's about complimenting the melody, sometimes that's simple root notes, sometimes it's walks and fiddly little bits. In the case of the pumpkins, what she did was what they needed. simple as that. that is what makes her good in my opinion. I hope she gets help too, she's a cool person... just made mistakes.
they all complete each other they're all that one final piece that brings the smashing pumpkins together and makes them whole its like the infinity gems time, space, reality, mind, power, and soul without all of them it's infinite sadness.
It's no coincidence that the Smashing Pumpkins line-up from 2005 to today hasn't really hit the heights without D'arcy and James iha. Once i heard that they wouldn't be returning i knew Smashing Pumpkins wouldn't be the same. So D'arcy and James gave the band a lot of credibility even if they didn't write any of the songs.
Amazing! They both look HAPPY! That's incredible for the Smashing Pumpkins. I wished they had continued on the "good" path instead of the drugs and resentment one.
D'arcy Wretzky, Wherever you are, you are a whole, you are the best, and you make my heart beat, how to forget your pretty eyes, how to forget your smile, how to forget that agility in the bass, I can't forget you and that amazing bass, never, never. You are a fantastic woman. D'arcy, wherever you are! You are my inspiration. and.... As I would like to see you play that bass again. with love. D'arcy forever ❤️
I´ve never seen SP live but as far as I know she did a decent job with playing the songs live. apart from her playing she did contribute a bit of singing and of course her cool persona to the band. I dont really care if she smoked crack and let her horses run amok. I hope she gets the help she needs and manages to stay out of trouble once shes gotten her current situation worked out.
D'arcy you're beautiful here ! and maybe shy...like it! :) Sad to hear about all those stories afterwards, with your drug addiction, arrests and alcohol. Hope you are doing well these days.
It’s too bad I was only 2 years old at the time of this interview, I only got to appreciate the 90’s from 97 onward. I kinda wish sometimes I wish I was born in 1982 and not 92 to appreciate the full decade of the 90’s
As someone born in 1982 who did appreciate the entirety of the 90’s from the early 90’s alternative to the late 90’s techno scene, it was great and I only appreciate it more, now. It’s still awesome that I can just go on yt and relive it all in seconds. Couldn’t even fathom doing that in the 90’s. It’s nice to hear someone wish they were born back then, so thanks for making my day.
Holy shit... Smashing Pumpkins was a huge musical part of the 90's for me. There was always so much focus on Billy that I never realized how attractive she was. Great band ... amazing music.
I remember that Corgan stated that she quit the band in the late '90s to do an acting career. He insisted to her that you can't just fall into in an acting career with no training or experience-- "she hadn't even been in a student film." Cut to twenty years later, and she is just a meth head living in rural Michigan. Corgan= wise sage.
Uhhh... twenty years later, Billy Corgan's kind of a total asshole, a crazy conspiracy theorist, and has lost his mind a lot. Financially he may be doing well and he's surely well-known, but he's really not such a great person. D'Arcy having left the public eye is the best thing she could have done. I don't know how she's doing- I hope she's off of meth or at least improving. It's for the best that she stays away from the news and media, and I applaud her for successfully doing so. Shame her acting career didn't lead too far.
Darcy is not a meth head, she's a total sweetheart and really down to Earth. Corgan states a lot of things about others when he should be shutting his mouth.
Billy wasn't wise... he tried to minimize her on every aspect of her career. You can notice that even on this joke interview... pay attention to what he says about her being inspirational for others... he has a huge problem with women being better than him at something.

Hope she gets her shit together. Lots of people clean up their mess. Look at Robert Downey Jr.
+Kharimi Nougat
Robert Downy Jr. didn't totally fuck up his face.
She is so hot and talented!!!
She was cute. Several plastic surgeries later, she looks like the Cat Lady.
Look at Vinnie Vincent. Now Vinnie's back, clearing up the past, and getting back into music. I hopeful that D'arcy can do the same.
She was so beautiful. I recently saw her mugshot, and honestly I would've never recognized her.
this is the best video ive ever seen to see d'arcys face!
Oh my god this makes me so sad. She was so beautiful
they all complete each other they're all that one final piece that brings the smashing pumpkins together and makes them whole its like the infinity gems time, space, reality, mind, power, and soul without all of them it's infinite sadness.
Wrong....
She was such a gorgeous woman. Seriously, what the fuck happened to her??
+1godlessmonkey Drugs
Fame.
+Mikael CHALIAN She's completely clean now.
ik
she was on meth and it fucked her up. idk about now tho?
That girl is cute. And so is D’arcy!
Billy hired to interview D'arcy, ends up basically interviewing himself.
Ego.
You can feel D'arcy’s disdain for Corgan
Amazing! They both look HAPPY! That's incredible for the Smashing Pumpkins. I wished they had continued on the "good" path instead of the drugs and resentment one.
Aww, I wish they were still like this.
D'Arcy is so beautiful!
"Some one should be inspired musically and not because they are a male or female" -Based 90's Corgan
She was very pretty and he is highly intelligent
God bless her, i really hope she gets well
D'arcy Wretzky,
Wherever you are, you are a whole,
you are the best, and you make my heart beat,
how to forget your pretty eyes,
how to forget your smile,
how to forget that agility in the bass,
I can't forget you and that amazing bass, never, never.
You are a fantastic woman.
D'arcy, wherever you are!
You are my inspiration.
and....
As I would like to see you play that bass again.
with love.
D'arcy forever ❤️
dude she was such an angel... omg
i love how he sounds TOTALLY different when he sings lol ily guys!
Gorgeous D'Arcy!
I Really Miss 90's
She was so nice, it's sad she's not around anymore :(
Happier days.
Billy was so cute!
God she was so beautiful and healthy
She was such a beautiful girl... sad that she turned into such a train wreck. omg this was 1994 it gives serious flashbacks
she turned into a train wrecktzky lolol
She was so beautiful, and had such a bright smile. It's so sad to see what drugs did to her. 😭
They look happy. Miss them
I miss d'arcy..James came back this year.hopefully d'arcy can make her way back for at least one show
She's so shy.
She's so D'elightful and D'elicious
Holy shit... Smashing Pumpkins was a huge musical part of the 90's for me. There was always so much focus on Billy that I never realized how attractive she was. Great band ... amazing music.
so beautiful
I remember that Corgan stated that she quit the band in the late '90s to do an acting career.
He insisted to her that you can't just fall into in an acting career with no training or experience-- "she hadn't even been in a student film."
Cut to twenty years later, and she is just a meth head living in rural Michigan. Corgan= wise sage.
Thats about right from what I understand. Did nothing since 1999 but a lot of dope
Uhhh... twenty years later, Billy Corgan's kind of a total asshole, a crazy conspiracy theorist, and has lost his mind a lot.
@@marilu19918 As far as music she is no better than him and never was these are facts.
I didnt realized D'arcy was that pretty!!💞💞💞
D'arcy before she quit music and starred in Daria
She was pretty chill.. like her personality.
Corgan's hair looks so cute ..
D'Arcy was so beautiful and talented and I wish she was still playing 🎸 I saw the Pumpkin's play in like 2000-2001 and it wasn't the same without her
I saw the pumkins many times and she never made any difference to me.
@@RonyFish I saw them many times in the 90's, but in 2000, Idk why but it was different without D'Arcy. Probably nostalgia and the fact that I had a high school crush with D'Arcy, Billy, well all of them. Melissa Auf der Maur was great, but nostalgia kicked in and I was no longer in high school. But I did get to meet all of Pumpkins after that concert in 2000 💛
@@amandala00 Yeah nostalgia I get what you mean, this happened to me too but not circa 2000's I saw them three times for the machina tour and I really enjoyed the music. Zwan was awesome too and I found Melissa and Paz to be awesome Bass player. But when they came back for Zeitgeist they played a special show in Paris but the magic was gone so yeah I get what you mean but it wasn't just the bass it was the whole thing.
I met Billy twice once with the whole band but with Melissa. I remember Jimmy was super nice. The second time it was Billy alone it wasn't for a show : he sent a message on myspace saying he wanted to meet people in Paris but in a casual way.
I got many bootleg from the 90's and 2000's if you're interested.
His jawline can cut glass
Bro her music was right on her style was right on and the way she held herself is right on. Yea it wasint just because u are a chic... u are talent... u r light! Peace from Texas
most adorable awkwardness. I love them both.
She's so mean spirited for real. I hope she is happy wherever she is.
Jeez, she really didn't like him, did she.
idk it seems like more of a camera shy thing to me
Your right I don't think anyone in the band liked him really considering how douchey he was too them
@@wawewa2075 if it wasnt for him she would never be famous. he played for her, wrote for her...
@@Liamnerfdude1 true but now like the guy you know
Typical awkward talented American girl
They are so awkward together. You can feel the tensions brewing even at that point.
D’arcy made me fall in love with the concept of women in bands.
D'arcy WayneGretzky.
Damn, I didn't know Jesse Eisenberg was in a rock band in the 90s.
they're not similar at all but whatever
Leo B their voices are
hank no
Um no
He’s bald now
D'arcy is absolutely stunning both with her attitude and personality. I wish we could of heard her talk more, she seems like she'd be down to earth as fuck.
Such a shame the band members didn't get along from here onward. Now it's only Billy Corgan in The Smashing Pumpkins.
KrisFrosz133 more like The Smashing Pumpkin. I hate they still try to use that name. It's like Sublime with Rome but it's only one original member. Just change the damn name
@@Memnoch_the_Devil
James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin have been back in the name for a couple years now.
