I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Prior to forming the band Filter in the early 90’s Richard Patrick would play guitar in the band Nine Inch Nails. While Trent Reznor would lead the band, Patrick would play on their debut album, appear in their early music videos and tour with the band over the course of 4 years from 1989 to 1993. After leaving Nine Inch Nails Patrick would go to form Filter and while they would have a good deal in the success in the 90’s they hit some turbulent times. Those turbulent times would inspire the band’s songs and while Trent Reznor is synonymous with the early years of Filter, so is Smashing Pumpkins bassist D’Arcy Wretzky who had a relationship with Patrick. Today let’s talk about the history of D’Arcy Wretzky and Filter.
Living in Cleveland in the 80’s Richard Patrick become a member of the city’s music scene playing in a nu-wave band called The Act. He would soon have a chance meeting with another local musician named Trent Reznor at a music store who was playing a new wave pop act called Exotic Birds. Reznor would soon start his own band forming Nine Inch Nails and nabbed a deal with TVT Records who put out the band’s debut record Pretty Hate Machine in 1989. Patrick would join Nine Inch Nails make a brief appearance on the record on the track Sanctified and toured with the band staying with the group until 1993. Despite being part of a multiplatinum band, Patrick was dirt poor making $400 a month as a hired hand. It was at this point he had come up with a 4 song demo and left the band and soon signed his own recording contract with Atlantic owned Reprise Records taking Nine Inch Nails programmer Brian Leisgang with him.
In 1995 Filter would release their debut album Short Bus that would go platinum thanks to the single Hey Man Nice Shot. Four years would go by until the band released their follow up, 1999’s Title of Record.
The lyrics on the group’s second album also took on a more serious tone with Patrick telling billboard “i think i took lyrics more seriously this time around as well. A lot of them are based on everyday things that happened in my life like breaking up with a girlfriend, getting angry or feeling like i’ve lost control of my life.I am the mouthpiece of this band and I’m always trying to answer the questions I have about life.
Title of Record would be another success thanks to the single Take a Picture which became Filter’s biggest hit to date peaking at number 12 on the billboard hot 100 charts. The album also produced another hit in welcome to the fold resulting in the album going platinum. Apeparing as a guest on the album would be smashing pumpkins bassist d’arcy wretzky who provided backing vocals on the song ‘Cancer.’ Patrick would admit to Loudwire he had a romantic relationship with wretzky during the making of the band’s second record despite the fact that she was married at the time. Patrick would admit in the same interview that he wretzky had an open relationship with her husband. He would tell loudwire and I quote
Yeah, there’s like, two or three love letters on this record. There’s "Miss Blue," there’s "I’m Not the Only One," there’s "Take a Picture," there’s "Skinny" and there’s "It's Going to Kill me." She was my favorite piece of plastic held to my ear because we were constantly on the phone, but we were never in the same room for more than one time.
But it was a massive secret. D'Arcy had her reasons for keeping it a secret. She was married to Kerry Brown at the time. The Smashing Pumpkins were the biggest band ever. She was playing Soldier Field and she would say, "Get a car and come out to see me at my house, in my little apartment." She spent the weekend and then she flies out on a Learjet, to go play some other massive show with the Pumpkins. He would go on to praise her adding
But, it was really amazing because she has such a clear vision and she was just spot on and she was a fantastic person to be around. I was just in awe. And it was just so weird keeping everything a secret - like people would ask, "who's the girl on this, who's the girl on this record?" while doing press on it. I just
if wretzky leaves you because of your substance abuse issues, you have officially hit and fallen through rock bottom
Would've been great to see her back with the Pumpkins. Her backing vocals were beautiful. Daydream is gorgeous.
Yeah it’s not the same without her
agree!
I mean they tried and shes not healthy and is just not cool w her appearanve overall. She was known for eing cute and petite. Shes gone really down hill.
Hey man, nice video.
it was about 3 months ago, that i had stumbled upon an interview with patrick where he spilled the beans on this exact topic and i was like.. wait waaahh. Had no idea stuff like that happened with big time bands.. also around the same time i was reading/listening to a lot of stories about Open marriages and how they are doomed to fail.. and it all came back around.
She also provided backing vocals on Take A Picture on the chorus
And Cancer
I love her look in the Smashing Pumpkins music video Zero.
Me to
I love that song and video. I also like their song "Rocket" just as much.
I love her look in tour during era ever more 😏
She definitely had style.
@@facerip2222 🚀 is probably my favorite Pumpkins song too
I went and listened to the songs I didn't know that you mentioned in this video, omg thank you so much 🙏🤘
Wanted to hear more about D'arcy 😔
Unbelievable, been listening and loving these songs for over 20 years and now they gain a new meaning... thank you very much :)
The last two songs from Filter's Title of Record, I'm Not the Only One and Miss Blue, are about Richard Patrick's relationship with D'arcy Wretzky.
It's fitting that you chose to upload this video on a Friday, as Title of Record is the sort of album you listen to on a Friday night.
I guess it was bc of my age when that album came out but it became one of my favorites and still gets heavy rotation weekly for me. I had no idea about the meaning behind the songs! I love hearing why and how a song was made!
I still think it’s crazy that he and his brother both “made it”. His brother is Robert Patrick from Terminator 2. He played the T1000. He was great in a bunch of stuff
Great in Peacemaker
davey scantino from the sopranos too
Robert Patrick also starred in the later seasons of The X-Files...which makes it kind of interesting that Filter put a song on the X-Files album.
Please do a video on Budgie!
Not a lot of people know about that band yet they were a big influence. I think the members are all dead now so it would be nice to honor them.
This was kind of lame. You repackaged your video about Filter and threw in D’Arcy at the end.
Great video.
I'm Not the Only One is one of my favorite Filter songs, never knew til now it was about her
Never knew this, xrazy
Darcy I've always admired you. As you can jam !!! Philadelphia USA 🇺🇲
I always thought Darcy should have joined Filter when she left the pumpkins
Awesome band
Patrick has some pretty crazy stories about his out of control drinking in that era
All you gotta do is listen to the lyrics of Take a Picture, the scenario in that song actually happened
Interesting fact: Richard Patrick is brother to Robert Patrick aka The T-1000 from Terminator 2
I once talked to another Filter lady bassist, she had green yellow neon hair and was quite a good person to talk to 😊
Short Bus is a great album.
Liesegang worked with Billy Corgan on his debut album
Hey just wondering if you have done a video on the band Brad w/Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament?
She was very attractive. I didn't care too much for pop/rock that the press dubbed "alternative". No fault of the band's or her own though and I hope she is doing well. EDIT: I never gave Filter a fair chance, perhaps I will.
God forgive bands for incorporating melody into their hard rock. They should castrated, they should!
I love them.
I saw them in Kuwait. Or was it a band named fuel? I am pretty sure it was filter.
I love Filter and D'arcy I love that girl. Have had a crush on her since mid 90's. She's been treated bad.
Look for the band Army of Anyone : made of STP and Richard belting out some absolute bangers. One off unfortunately. Also Ray Luzier absolutely smashing the shit out them skins 😂
Good band.
Hi, a suggestion maybe: Could you investigate the story of Tim "Ripper" Owens? I mean it's odd that he was in Judas Priest and Iced Earth, he only lasted 2 albums with each band and then he got out because their respective bands returned with the last singer. Thanks in advanced
Less than 4 minutes, this should help me fall asleep…
so tell me whatever happened to filter?
I am so tired of those fucking Google Pixel ads. It’s like the only ads I’m seeing and I’m never gonna get one. It’s making me not want it even more.
So basically a side dude felled in love with another man's wife. He forgot to play his position
Didn't Filter's drummer join The Pumpkins after they fired Jimmy Chamberlin? It was a long time ago, I may be thinking of another band.
yep they had matt walker
I missed the bizarre part
James iha got her first when she was still young and pretty.
So basically I got fooled into watching your Filter video again. Not cool.
Would drinking game.
I can’t remember where I heard it, but there was an interview with a 90’s band and they were talking about playing a festival with Filter and noted all the members just seemed miserable.
Interviews with Richard Patrick are hilarious and he’s struck me as a jovial dude, but behind the scenes is always it’s own thing. Addiction will do that.
Trent Reznor left Nine Inch Nails? Huh?
dude where have you been? Henry Rollins took over NIN years ago
@@Outshined93Trent is now with Nine Black Alps mate, with Atticus Ross from Friends
And his brother was a terminator
I’m going to reiterate a few comments that you said that this guy said. Picture was not a love song. He literally ran naked down a plane drunk with his dad on the plane. That’s not a love song to her. Do your homework if your selling “true” stories. Make sure they’re true! I’m off your channel. This isn’t the first one I’ve seen where you give wrong info.
Weird - if Wretzky was in an open marriage why hide her relationship from her husband?
Richard was making 400/week, not per month - sorry, I'm not trying to sound too critical - I love the content - big fan and keep it coming
It’s $400 a month. See this interview www.sfbayareaconcerts.com/2011/11/interview-with-richard-patrick-of.html?m=1
@@rnrtruestories I've seen him talk about it before - I thought I'd remembered it at a weekly rate - either way it sucks at that pro level - sorry if I messed it up - like I said, I totally dig this channel - watch all the vids
@@morgancatherwood5665 thanks. Yeah I know $400 a month seems super super low
@@sstaners1234 and get hit in the head with a mike stand
$400 in 1993 would be over $800 today. Still not great, but figured it was worth pointing out.
Unfortunetely darcy, dissapears of spotlights, it would be awesome see her again on tour with SP, but there isnt money to put her and corgan, together on the same stage again.
What is Darcy doing now??
Nobody would know who D'Arcy was if she hadn't met Billy. She owes everything to him.
After "hired guns" that I've got zero respect for this dude
Reprise is pronounced repreez. Finally, watching family guy has paid off.
That’s it? Rubbish
the video also left out the tiny fact that d'arcy's a crossdresser
But, Darcy can’t sing.
And couldn’t play bass which is why Billy played bass on the albums😎
What is bizarre about this?
