    I now understand the Temp setting in Lr and how to set White Balance in Rawtherapee
    Thanks for spending the time to enlighten us.
    I keep learning watching your videos, thanks

      11 hours to record and edit - and I still screwed up the spelling! That was hard graft, so glad you liked it Hans 🍻🍻

    Thanks for all the work you put into these RT videos. Your depth of knowledge of RT and raw processing in general is unmatched on UA-cam. One question. Can you recommend an viewing order for these vids so that a newb like me, who just graduated to a full frame camera and shooting/processing raw files, can get educated without getting overwhelmed?

      Hi Rudy, you're welcome and cheers. There's no order really except to watch this one first ua-cam.com/video/310rCQZe0NI/v-deo.html

    Hi Andy, not sure of you will remember me from back in the UKNPN days. I hosted the conference we had in Silloth. I am thoroughly enjoying your channel, the range of subject matter is-well 'staggering!' Just a quick question, are you still in touch with Tom Wyllie?

    • @AndyAstbury

      Hi Brian, and yes I certainly do! Glad you appreciate the channel content. Not spoken to Tom for a few months come to think of it, but basically I suppose you could say that I am.

    Like the content ✅✅✅
    Small point to consider on your description for 19.40 minutes (screen shot) into the video.
    On the descriptions for 1900K ~9000K When above daylight view consider instead of overcast to heavily overcast (light just bounces round on an overcast day)
    Maybe do low to high space.
    Outer space might be black?? (Blue colour temp goes to black?)🌎 I deal with fluorescent and led colour rendering lighting most days-it’s all very interesting

    An interesting and informative video that provides very detailed information on white balance!
    A note on white balance + exposure compensation: I was reading rawpedia this week (Exposure Tab, Exposure Compensation Tool) and I read something about that white balance and exposure compensation are somehow intertwined ("there is a white balance dependent base gain applied before exposure"). I didn't fully understand this, but this could be a reason why the white balance changes when you lighten the image using the exposure compensation.

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  2 роки тому +1

      Great question - Exposure Comp is an RGB adjustment. Within the RGB colour model every pixel value effects both brightness and colour - you can not effect one without effecting the other.
      But using Lab adjustments, specifically the L channel, you can effect brightness/lightness/luminance (in basic practical terms they can be regarded as the same thing) WITHOUT effecting colour; which is controlled separately via the a and b channels.
      RGB mode EvComp doesn't actually change the white balance NUMBER VALUE, but certainly can change the perceived "colour cast" on an image, because tonally (grey scale-wise) BLUE is very dark, RED is lighter, and GREEN is lightest of all. Would a video on this help and be appreciated on the channel do you think?

    Do you have any quick and dirty tips for setting the white point in Raw, in Rawtherapee? My camera isn't yet supported, and I'm using guesswork based on removing colour casts in highlights.

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  2 роки тому +3

      Until you get camera support my initial suggestion would be to convert your raw to a DNG. That way Raw Therapee will have no problem with it. If you have Lightroom then convert it there, but if you don't subscribe to Adobe paid software then download the FREE Adobe DNG converter helpx.adobe.com/uk/camera-raw/using/adobe-dng-converter.html
      Photos taken outside with ambient light will generally be between 5200K and 6500/7000K depending on the time of day - but seriously, my advice would be to shoot on cloudy camera setting and just "salt to taste" on temp slider, and try to not add any contrast until you are happy with your white balance.

    thanks sir, great videos and learning experience....when should demosaic be used....i am thinking it best after 'base" adjustments, but not sure....relative to olympus cameras if you have experience there

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  2 роки тому

      Cheers Kenneth! But without the demosaic process you wouldn't have an image on the screen - at all. Demosaicing is the process of decoding the raw file by assigning RGB values to each and every pixel, even on Olympus! So it has to come at the start of the process pipe.

    Valuable explanation of the not very intuitive Kelvin-numbers as they are showing the actual compensation!

    Hi Andy, question and thanks. Firstly, thank you for your incredibly detailed videos. I've picked up a lot of tricks for editing photos for my dive club at a time where I cannot get back onto Lightroom/Photoshop for budgetary reasons. However, I'm still unhappy with my edits. I can't find anyone who uses Raw Therapee running tutorials for 'putting it all together' and tips that would be specific to the issues of underwater photography, especially from a GoPro (I know it's not the best source but underwater photography is particularly expensive!). Is there any way you could do something like this?
    I dive in the UK where lighting and visibility are issues so I really need to squeeze every drop out of the Raw imagery I'm taking!

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  2 роки тому

      Thanks for saying that Nick 🍻 I take it you are shooting .gpr raw files with your GoPro. This are basically like a DNG but have no exif preview, so they could be fed into the free Adobe DNG Converter and then sent to Raw Therapee. It's a file format I've never seen so if you want to send me some then please do as I'm more than interested to say the least. Use the free side of WeTransfer.com and send to tuition@wildlifeinpixels.net

      @@AndyAstbury Thank you, Andy! I have converted them to DNG and I'm sending a few across now. I have had to pick from ones that I know I have permission to use and without club children. They are not superb quality as I'm still getting my eye in on the whole 'club photographer' thing but it would help me immensely to see what is possible. Plus, as new as I am to the underwater side and Raw Therapee, I still get asked a lot for help as I'm a prolific poster, if there are decent videos I can point other people to, it would be great!

    In the modern age of RAW photography, the only time setting white balance before shooting really matters is with video. Especially if you have more than one camera shooting the scene. Doing the colour grading is a nightmare when every shot starts with its own idea of what white is and none of them agree.
    I can't really overstate how much I love the flexibility of RAW, though it may have made me a bit lazy about some things. Auto white balance is always on because I know I'll probably change it later anyway, so why bother trying to get it perfect in camera.

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  2 роки тому +2

      Exactly, but I never use Auto ISO because I don't as a rule like the result of the preview on the back of the camera - my eyes find the constant application of a set Cloudy B1 a bit more helpful while actually taking the shots. As I said in the vid, everyones eyes are different!
