I learned that the magic number for white balance was 68. Your 47 threw me for a loop. Can you explain the difference?

Very helpful. I’ve always wondered what the ideal number for the RGB was, 46 is the magic number (although 42 would have been perfect 😄).
Thanks for the tip of 46,46,46 with the eye dropper. Great littlle rule of thumb to remember to target middle grey and a good starting point for W.B.

Two tricks I do: 1) Zoom in so you can get more precise on whatever it is that you are clicking on. 2) The "whites" of people's eyes are pretty close to white -- closer than I had originally assumed.
But I thought he said we need to sample 18% gray. Not white. So, not sure why you wrote to sample people's eyes..
@@eladbari I’m not sure why he wants 18% grey. For the eye dropper, it just needs to be “neutral” - from white to back without clipping. He says this at one point before starting his discussion on trying to pick the perfect grey. The eye dropped is just going to adjust the temp and tint - it isn’t going to adjust the brightness. The grey to white isn’t going to make any difference. Trying to pick darker colors isn’t as good because a tiny bit of noise can throw off the white balance to a much larger degree than a lighter grey to white but if you can find a dark grey to black without noise, it will work just fine as well.
@@pedzsan I wish there was a way for this Eye Dropper tool to sample the average of 5 pixels around it, then, so it can neutralize noise.
For me it's even trickier because I edit 35mm film scans which have grain, so...
And it's bloody hard to make sure all images are white balanced correctly.
@@eladbari How about leveraging "Undo"? I'm not sure if LR has all the tools. But my idea is to select a rectangle, blur it yourself, sample the color, then undo the blur.
Also... I thought the eye dropped did average 9 pixels or there was an option to do so or something like that. You might want to do some research on this topic.
Best explanation I have seen about proper white balance!
On the subject of only being able to get Preset WB`s on RAW only, I remember Mr Morganti you showed ho you could still get those Presets on a JPEG, by going to a RAW file and clicking on Shade, then setting up a Preset for that, then do the same for Daylight and save a Preset for that, then, go through all the other selections like Fluorescent and Tungsten etc and set up a Preset for each of those. Then when your re working on JPEGs you can still have the automatic settings that you get when working on a RAW file, by selecting one of the Presets you had set up.
I remember that video, I made presets for each to use on jpegs. Still have the preset but rarely use it because I shoot RAW 99.9% of the time.
@@TC_Conner at the tkmd I was shooting raw znx jpeg, bug mainly processing and storing jpegs because of size, I've changed now, trying to be RAW all the time

A question please: If we have one of those small portable white balance screens, and we take a photo of it, if we don't get 46-46-46 does that suggest it is not a good quality grey 'card'?

I have found if all 3 numbers are nearly the same you get a pretty close WB no matter what they are, it may take 2 or 3 goes.

I was sure you'd sample those white poles in the middle, but you surprised me with looking for gray.
Would you say such gray is possible to find in most images?
+++ Also, if there's a quick painless way to match White Balance between a series of shots- that would be a life saver! It takes SO Long to match with all the color tints/skews. It takes so long!
For that, I shoot with a fixed white balance, usually 6500k or the shade preset on my Nikon. I then can be sure to correct a single image and be able to apply the correction to any similar pictures. If I leave it at auto the pictures may vary and need individual correction

Great video but is that 46 value only applicable to outside images? I have a portrait shot and the best numbers I can get are around the 70's and 80's and that is against a grey/white backdrop. Am I missing something?
I use LR updated as of today and I cannot find the boxes on the bottom left tool bar?
This was super helpful, although I was a bit surprised how much time you spend on all the ways to adjust Temperature when you didn't show that users can just click the temp-number and type in any number they want.
If the image has a pronounced color cast, such as this one, how can 46, 46, 46 be truly neutral? Wouldn’t those values be inaccurate because of the color cast? After correcting for the color cast, the same sampled area wouldn’t read as neutral again.

18% gray has nothing to do with setting white balance, although it it does no harm to choose something close to those values. My white balance cards usually measure closer to 90-95%. Your method is to guess something which is neutral in the first place which is a bit bizarre but I suppose will get you in the ball park.
If you had the navigator window open, you can see the white balance change as you move the eye-dropper without having to click on the main image and apply it.
Thanks for the tip about the auto-dismiss function as that really bothered me for ages.

I've used a white area with the eye dropper tool sometimes, it will do a decent white balancd too. But sometimes you'll get a popup saying that the area is too bright and to choose a different spot.
yep. black areas works too. gray may work.

@@TC_Conner yep. but I find that sometimes what you think is gray actually have a hint of blue, or maybe other color. It is harder to pick up that when it is black or white. so you try using it with the eyedropper and the photo still too warm and you're wondering why
@@raulgalets I never get good results trying to sample white or black. The whole image tints into a certain color.
What I don't understand is how the hell does LR lets you use the same tool [eye dropper]- so that sampling either white / black/ gray - will give you the same color corrected result. LR doesn't know what I mean to sample, so I think there's a confusion here. Maybe this eye dropper tool was indeed only made for 18% gray and not sampling White or Black?
@@eladbari oh I see what you mean... maybe. maybe it was meant to 18% gray. it makes sense. but then if you did'nt shoot with a gray card in location how would you do it?
Any idea how to make the WB eyedropper grid visible in ACR?
Why couldn't there just be an option to select where it sets all 3 values to 46? Like auto option and it automatically adjust to the right value. Or why wouldn't this be possible?
Im sure this is incorrect. When you use the eye dropper it will change that area to x/x/x , x depending upon the luminosity. If you use it the eay you suggest it will do nothing. The slight change you saw was due to the fact you didn't find a 46/46/46. The auto correct actually does a pretty go point to start from.
using AUTO from that WB Pulldown menu- does a good job? You sure?
@@eladbari Its a good start. Often it works well, other times it just gives a really good pointer as to the direction of travel. At the end of the day it's up to you how you select all the settings. All I know is that the method suggested in the video is not correct. Generally this is a great channel and I wouldn't normally bother commenting.
@@michaelmillward8006 In the age of AI - instead of replacing us photographers, I just wish before that- it could just go over all of our frames and solve the White Balance so they all seem seamless. Fixing color casts is the most time consuming thing ever. It's tiring. And I have to do that on 35mm film scans, which could go all over the place since each frame could come out different in the scanning phase. Even shooting digital RAW can get messy with trying to balance all the shots so you can have a good, even baseline to edit from

Your 46,46,46 tip seems illogical to me. If you click on an object that is already 46 ,46,46 by doing so you are telling LR to make that object neutral, but since it already is, no adjustment will be made. I have always just found something that should be neutral gray, but doesn't look right in the picture. LR then makes it neutral and shift everything else by the same amount. If that doesn't look right, I click on something that should be white (but is not blown out) and note the difference in the temp between the two selections. Somewhere between those should be an accurate setting if you want things to look as if a white light was the source of illumination. However, in many case, you don't want things to look like that, but want the light to reflect the color temp of the lights source as it existed when the picture was taken. That requires warming up the picture or cooling the temperature to taste. Light room can't do that automatically as it has no access to the temp. of the source lighting beyond the crude selection of shade, cloud, etc.
I'm running latest version of LR on Windows and the ALT key trick doesn't allow me to resize the panel as far as you were able to do it . . . hopefully nothing wrong with my software and prob just a difference between Windows v Mac
I don’t understand Adobes method of numbering white balance on the slider. If the numbers equate to degrees Kelvin then the numbering has been reversed. 2500k is warmer than 3000k is warmer than 4000k and so on, not the way Adobe shows

256*18%=46.08
The 46 is the key. i think all photos ought to come with an 18% gray card somewhere in the shot. It ought to be a law that buildings have 18% gray! But a serious observation. Seriously, is there a way to lock that WB value in for a group of pictures shot within a certain time. Let's say you too 7 pictures of that general area..like vertical or reframed. Can I grab that color balance and lock it in?
Not sure if you’re meaning lock within the camera. But if you’re meaning within LR then yes you simply select the seven photos and synchronise within Develop module for the WB and any other adjustments
I've never used the eyedropper so I tried it. I found a grey area and clicked, 46.1, 46.2, 46.3. Not bad for a first attempt.
However, I didn't like the result. The picture looked too blue.
Just carry a grey card or ColorChecker panel and take one extra shot (in the same light) with one of those included and you'll always have your 18% grey available.
Can you explain. So take the photo with card in shot and expose while focusing on the gray card? Or just take the photo focusing on subject and expose for the subject. Then later use the pick tool for wb in LR?

I hate the term “proper white balance”. Unless you’re doing color sensitive work, white balance is a creative adjustment just like any other.
so i filled a layer from from photoshop an 18% grey RGB 124 124 124, and imported it into Lightroom. When i used the White Balance tool on it, it says me a perfect R49.0 G49.0 B49.0. I am 100% convinced this should be 49. Anyone reading this can try them for themselves.
😅I wonder about the 3x46% I thought that finding What should be a neutral spot. Then it doesn’t matter if it is 3x20% or 3x75%. I also thought, that e neutral gray card would be 3x50%
3x46 is the RGB value of the typical gray card reflecting 18% of the light. For calculation, the RGB values in the range from 0 to 255 are the result of 256 * 18%.
FYI Anthony - if you open up the preview panel on left side, as you move around the dropper, the image in the navigator pane will constantly adjust.

I thought that when you pick a point with the eye dropper tool you are telling Lightroom that point should be neutral and that you want Lightroom to adjust the white balance to make that point neutral. As I under stand it this means that if you were successful in finding a point that was exactly 46, 46, 46, Lightroom would not change the white balance because the point you picked was already neutral. As I understand it what you want is a point that should be 46, 46, 46 (but isn't because the white balance needs adjusting). Isn't this why people use gray cards, then they have a point that they know is neutral and should be 46, 46, 46. If I'm right looking for a point that is 46, 46, 46 won't work. Please explain to me my misunderstanding.
Exactly my thought. Anthony looks for a point that is already color-balanced (all numbers are equal). A perfect grey point is never found so the white balance will always be adjusted. In other words: he tries to find the spot in the picture that needs the least adjustment. I might be wrong, but I really don't get this procedure.

But you don't get white in every frame. That's where an Xrite Passport Color checker costing 150$ comes in....which is...a bit much, I guess....
Yet, any solution that could promise to match all series of frames to the same WB so there are no color tint differences- is a tool much needed. Just not sure what it is...
@@eladbari the idea is to hat you choose an area that you think should be neutral. Obviously this can't be exactly accurate but it's a good starting point. If you look at the color temp and tint sliders before you apply the eye dropper and afterwards it gives you a really good idea which way to go for a manual adjustment but it's not an exact fix .
You want to choose a spot which should be a neutral gray, that is all 3 channels should be but are not equal in value. (20,20,20) and (117,117,117) are also neutral grays. The 18% gray (46,46,46) dates to when gray cards were used for exposure metering and the average scene was assumed to have 18% reflectance.
this video got suggested to me by the algorithm. The only useful "tip" I got here is the auto dismiss function. The 46 46 46 is incorrect, you should use your eyes and choose a spot what you think should be grey/neutral and use the eye dropper there. I know you know this method is wrong, but why are you making a video about it? This will only hurt your channel.
One of the worst method. I need edit 300 image/day. Do you will succes? We need prof.
Not one of your best and really doesn't get across the point of using the eye dropper ... also really doesn't address when you have a photo that is void of greys ... for this I use Photoshop curves three point adjustment ...
