I worked at a small engine repair shop about 25 years ago. Even then the owner told me that his competition was a $99 mower from whatever big box stores were around. We had a $59 service special on your typical Briggs push mower which included changing the oil, pulling the blower housing, blowing the dust out, sharpening the blades, cleaning or replacing the air filter, carburetor diaphragm, spark plug, and head gasket. While the head was off, we decarboned it and lapped and adjusted the valves. Was about an hour and a half of labor and about $10 in parts at the time. After this treatment they would usually run like new. This was in the days before overhead valve engines, and breaker points were still around on older mowers we saw.
We had a quick test to see if repairing an old mower was viable, we turned it over with the spark plug disconnected and spun it backwards. If the engine offered no resistance backing up the power stroke, or the crankshaft was bent, we told the customer not to bother. Other things that usually totalled old mowers were problems with the self propelled mechanism, and rusted out decks.
In the day we also had to deal with the valve seats on the Briggs engines popping out. It was a warranty repair, and the official fix was to reinsert the valve seat, and use a center punch to punch divots around the edge of the seat to expand the metal. I learned a lot from him, even though I had been repairing mowers on my own since I was a kid.

The punch method is called staking, and I have used it on many different applications. Basically anything you don't want to move, stake it.

@@MrTruckerf That skill came in handy later on when I started working on mail extraction machines. The cutter assemblies would have bronze bushings pressed into aluminum plates that would sometimes work loose.

When I was a young guy (about 10 yrs old), my Dad would ask for assistance while repairing small engines. I wish he would've let me do more of it on my own. It may have kindled the spark earlier, that I now have. Problem is, he passed about 7 years later. I have the spark, but lost the mentor.
Your videos help with the spark ... a lot. Ahhhh, but the mentor. The memories will have to do.

It's nice to get a bargain when someone does not know what they're doing.
A few years back I picked up a backpack blower. In the ad it said used for one season and now it will not start. When I made contact with the owner he explained that he would rather buy new one and he just wants $20 for it. I went straight over there and it looked exactly like in the picture. I pulled the cord all that scene fine so I gave him the money and then he gave me the brand new gas can that he bought for that.
As soon as I returned home I went out to the garage and started checking things. That's when I noticed the on and off switch was in the off position. I hit the primer ball pulled the cord once and it started up immediately.
I enjoyed your videos look forward to watching more.

I have the identical mower. I changed the oil after the first season and it was glittery with metal. Then changed it again at the 3rd season, it was barely dark and had almost no metallic glitter. Briggs claims to have made some changes to the engine to lengthen the life of the oil (2800 vs 3600rpm, better air filtration to catch dirt, better oil cooling, tighter manufacturing tolerances) but I am still going to change the oil to get the debris out. I have no doubt it will die an earlier death with no oil changes, but I know plenty of neighbors who never change, check OR add oil, so it seems all the marketing in the world can't teach idiots to care for their stuff.

I've been using the same two mowers for the past 23+ years and I have only changed their oil twice. 1st time after the initial break-in period and then again last winter -- the oil looked black but I didn't find any grit. I check the oil 2-3x a season and top off when needed. I learned this while in the Army. They only changed the oil in our trucks when an analysis showed it was needed.

I had that mower, and loved it. It's a VERY good, light mower. I also changed the oil in it. While I don't actually remember if I found the procedure in the owners manual or online, I simply turned the mower on it's side and drained the oil out of it while I took care of other projects, come back a while later and fill it with new oil. I ended up selling it with a trailer, zero turn and a cheap weed eater and blower as a package.

before you go messing under any lawn mower you should disconnect the spark plug.
you could easily chop off your hand if the mower was to start up while servicing
it may be possible that it is a 2 cycle and it has some internal porting that injects the oil into the firing chamber
i know in the 80s some mopeds that used 2 cycle engines had a separate oil bottle so no need to mix. you just add the fuel and oil to their respective bottles and internally they was mixed.

A friend of mine owns a lawn mower repair shop, the new thing with consumer lawn equipment is no oil changes, they come from the factory filled with full synthetic motor oil and all you need to do it keep it full. That’s what consumers want, no maintenance. Pull the cord and it starts, if it doesn’t start they buy a new one. And with using full synthetic motor oil the number of hours you get out of the mower is still longer than most consumers keep their mowers anyway.

@@gillespriod5509 My engines have always out-lasted the machines that they were on, because of regular oil changes and keeping a good air filter on them. That even includes the inexpensive aluminum cylinder wall engines on lawnmowers, roto-tillers, snow blowers, and pressure washers. It's pretty easy for me to imagine, that an engine will still out-last the machine its on, with just "check&fill", if the engine has had a good break in, and good quality filters are used. Regular maintenance would still be a good idea, if you plan on repurposing the engine, or selling it, after the wheels have come off the deck, the bag has holes, and the throttle cable no longer works.
As a rule, I just change the oil once a season, and check each time I put gas in it. Each season, I clean or replace the air filter and pre-filter.

Some taxi drivers have reported 160,000 miles on their engines that way.(I don't know if I believe it or not) Others have used synthetic oil and bypass filters(Frantz) and have had pretty good success, by replacing filters and adding oil, no drain and fill.

@@maeflower5108 It's not the cost of the new oil, unless it's some exotic synthetic, like "Amsoil". For me, the problem is, what to do with the used oil. It's very hard for me to find a place, that will accept my 16 quarts of used oil from my generators, lawnmower, rototiller, wood chipper, pressure washer, and slide cutter. It just seems that their used oil tanks are always full. another thing, if an engine is properly broken in, you can change the oil once per season, and know, that the engine will likely out-last the machine that it's on.
For the taxi drivers, they can change their oil filters with no tools, and it takes only a few minutes. A filter only costs a few dollars, and the money they save, can go towards a new car, which is worn worse than the engine anyway. The trick is, to spend only as much money on maintenance as necessary, to ensure the engine outlasts the car, or the machine it's on.

I miss the old foam air filters, they would last forever I would rinse them out, blow them dry and oil them, done.

My brother lives in Hollis, NH~ from your vids, I would guess not very far from The Mustie1 shop. He bought his house in '87. Hollis is one of the many NH towns that has no home trash pick-up so _everyone_ goes to the dump; excuse me, the Town Transfer Station (the cleanest dump I have ever seen), but Hollis has many many people who work in white collar professions vs blue collar. In general white collar people can't or won't fix a damn thing. My brother usually picks up two or three lawn mowers, harrows, snow blowers, per year, usually they need a little work but a half hour or forty five minutes will get better than half of his finds up and running again. He isn't a mechanic, but our father had a small lawn service when he was a teen (I'm a decade younger) and dad taught the five things to check before sending a machine to be fixed... He hasn't bought a lawn mower in 32 years or longer, and usually has one knocking around if a friend or co-worker needs one too.

Full synthetic oil? Even running full synthetic I would still change the oil but I wonder if that's the reasoning behind the no oil change.
There have been tests done on FS oil and it does last a very long time compared to conventional oil before it starts losing its viscosity.

It would take them two,-three hours to fix if they had any skills at all, so it would be $400-600 in their mind. So instead they take their valuable time to watch a ball game and spend $500 on a new mower.

Ex FIL has a Husky mower like that one, only AWD (~$499 @ Lowe's) ... Guy he worked with bought it new, let it sit outside over the wet rainy Washington (state) winter with ethanol fuel in it... Went to use it in the spring and it wouldn't start. Brought it into work to throw it in the scrap pile, he grabbed it and brought it home. Fresh fuel and cleaned the crud out of the bowl and it ran like new.

Wish I could find a deal like that at a yard sale near me. I can't complain tho as just last month I was gifted with a still new looking perfectly maintained and only used for 2 years when bought new Garden Way Troy Bilt 33" mulching walk behind mower from 1995 (according to the engine date code from Briggs), with it I got the owners manual and 2 boxes. In one still sealed up box was 2 blades that were rusty due to age and in the other still sealed box was the air filter, air filter foam, champion spark plug and 2 new belts. The mower had only been used for about 2 years when bought new in 1995 and the woman they inherited the house from and therefore the mower had had it serviced before putting it in her shed. That mower still looks like new, only thing that's wrong is the grips fell off but those should be easy enough to find and this one has the battery with key start option as well as the pull start, the battery is odd it's a 7.5 volt and looks like something from a kids powerwheels toy ride on, it is missing it's charging cable you plug in but I thought if I ever stick a battery on there I'll just come up with another way of charging it as I'm sure finding the cable wouldn't be easy or if someone had one they'd be asking a fortune online for it. I had the thing running in less than 15 minutes of the neighbor bringing it and giving it to me and everything on it working and cut with it that afternoon. So as I said I can't complain as that was the best gift I've gotten, because before that I was having to mow my over an acre hillside with a 2019 Hyper Tough 20" push mower that's right front wheel rusted off (repaired that).
Notice the carb on this Husky is the same thing that's on my 20" cheapest mower Walmart had, those plastic ones that some people don't like but I find easy peasy to get working again. Hopefully I come across something like this at a yard sale or set out at the trash sometimes as with the Troy Bilt walk behind 33" I do most of my mowing with, there's still places it's too big to go or dangerous to operate on my the banks of my hill where that I still need some kind of lightweight push mower.

It might be a two-stroke that just burns the oil. I had a jet ski like that. Didn’t really need to change the oil, just top it off at the beginning of every service. I honestly don’t think it even had a filter. Small engines are great for that kind of thing. Very little maintenance, just check and go.

It's scary that you feel the need to comment when you have so little knowledge of engines. BTW: This is a 4-stroke lawn mower, not a 2-stroke jet ski... there is a difference.

      @ebels3 5 років тому

@@johncoops6897 It's scary you need to assume what I know just to be a troll. I actually know quite a bit about engines. I got my associates in automotive tech and have passed 6 ASE tests so far, including one in diesel. I have also gone back multiple times to expand my education with electives. BTW: How do you know that is a four stroke? Did he say it is? I must have missed it. And there is no difference between one engine and another. If you can work on one, you can work on them all. The only real difference is what the engine uses as fuel. The only major difference between a two-stroke and four-stroke is that a two-stroke does the same amount of work in half the time. They also generally don't have oil reservoirs, but not always. See my original comment for an example. Sorry to hurt your already low self-esteem, but your welcome for replying. Have a good day.

I found a Husqvarna lawn mower and string trimmer on the curb and when I asked the owner he said he just hired a service and didn't want them. My Sears Tecumseh 21 at the big lawn house has been chugging along for 19 years. Starts on third pull almost every time. Keep it clean, replace filter, sharpen blade every year (or twice), dump oil out the top every two years (I've never pulled a drainplug on a mower), use non ethanol gas, clean carb every two years, replace plug every five, run dry on Thanksgiving, store, repeat in March.
