Why are people so mean about his singing voice? Ok, he's no Sinatra, but Ian Brown can sing just as much out of tune and as a matter of fact I quite like John's tone. It's warmer than Brown's. John Squire is not about the singing, but he delivers the song with great energy. I love this version, out -of-tune voice and all! I just wish he came back!
It’s a complete sacrilege to an awesome song ruined by John with this attempt to prove he can do it by himself. It’s absolutely awful let’s just be honest. ✌️👍✌️
I love the Roses and I think Squire is one of the most inspirational guitarists I've ever seen. Ian Brown can't sing in tune (which doesn't matter, as he's got the soul and charisma to make songs great) to save his life. Much as I adore Squire, his singing makes Ian Brown sound like Pavarotti.
Ian’s vocal is one of the things that made this song so beautiful. It wasn’t always so good live but still good. I don’t like johns versions of stone roses but enjoy his solo stuff, hope he goes back to it
@amcardle1 Would you honestly like to see the Roses reform after all this time? Look at all the bands that have re-grouped recently: Blur, The Verve, Led Zeppelin, Happy Mondays... Everytime it's been pretty lack-luster. I'd say: just leave the magic to the past. Let sleeping dogs lie. Plus, John Squire's recent artwork is top-notch. :)
they say Captain Beefheart could sing 14 octaves, like that song "Electricity" and there's Bonn Scott's voice too... The Stone Roses are new to me; I'm addicted!
He's now packed up playing and writing and is concentrating on his art work.... Thank fuck for that. This is a travesty!! Oh, and I am a Roses fan and think as a guitarist and song writer he was a gem... although Marshalls Room is utter gash!
hmmm... Don't quit the day job john :) Nahh im kidding. I enjoy his out of tune singing. He's an amazing guitar player as well. Possibly one of my faves.
@ThereIsARain Blur return has been ANYTHING but lack-luster! They're performance at Glasto 2009 was held one of the best return to the stage of the last 15 years probably! And Hyde Park was a triumph! And I should know as I was there! If the Roses were to return it should be for the right reasons and I think he should be a one off gig just to put the ghost of Reading '96 to rest once and for all. It can't end on that note... it just can't!
it will take another 5 years for the music world to see what calculated craftmanship this guy has, incredibly intelligent... it's quite scarey!!! but safe
@riquelme64 He tried that and it didnt quite work. As musically talented as the Seahorses were, they lacked the very things which made the Roses great...Originality, passion and balls.
Nowt wrong with this, he's voice isn't as awful as Ian Brown's is live so enough slaggin off of his vocals. We all know John Squire is all about the guitar playing. Thanks for posting it.
Technically he has a better voice than Brown. But Brown's vocals made the Roses songs that little bit more special. Mind you this is a nice little cover in it's own way.
One of ma heroes and one of the best guitarists of all time but this is shit!! great shame what happened to the roses as they could have been alot more successfull and cement there place as the greatest band ever but shit happens and theyll never b forgotten
so you think john has better vocals than reni? and brown was usually off key in his singing, particularly live. most of the time, the one who does the backing vocals or harmonies is a solid singer, sometimes even more solid than the lead singer, or else the backing singer would just mess up the singing all the more. and reni did a wonderful job singing harmonies with brown.
"I believe it's the seahorses" . It's supposition like that that causes war. Do your research kid. This is 2003. Squire hasn't worked with Helmet since 99 and never will again.
Ian wrote 90% of the lyrics. What ever you say about Ians singing the Roses would never have made it without him.Proof of the pudding is in 5 successful solo albums for Ian and 2 shit albums for squire.Even his gran didnt buy a copy!
doesn't quite work for me. There are certain songs that call for a punk-lead vocal and this is not one of them. It's anti-themic to the song's melodious rapture which lifts the chorus into a realm of ethereal beauty like a harpsichord being strummed.
A fun and interesting arrangement of an already amazing song. Squire can't sing for shit though. This is probably the closest we're ever going to see of a Roses reunion.
The song doesnt sound right in this key it needs to drop 2 frets, the origanal was amazing and he has ruined it with his singing aswell, he was still incredible in the roses tho, i started playing guitar because of him.
This is shocking - absolutely nothing on the roses. What ever about Ian Brown's singing live, there was a magic about it when he did it, no matter how bad. This is just appalling.
much respect to Squire...it's nice to hear an alternate version of this classic song. His voice kind of reminds me of Iggy Pop or David Bowie.
And Bob Dylan
Why are people so mean about his singing voice? Ok, he's no Sinatra, but Ian Brown can sing just as much out of tune and as a matter of fact I quite like John's tone. It's warmer than Brown's.

Sounds like an american sitcom band
well much as love his guiatar work his voal wrecked an anthem

my exact thought
brown was class couldnt carry a tune in a bucket to be fair but was the soul of the roses
This comment cracked me up....17 years after it was posted!
happy birthday to the best indie guitarist of all time
@JTlat yep! From "Transatlantic Near Death Experience"
Totally true. Mad respect to John for getting on stage. He's a fucking class act for sure.
this is dreadful
Love it!
the way *he* plays there are no words...
Sound's like he's about to break into I'm Waiting For The Man.
Sings better than a live Ian Brown.
Without Reni though it just doesn't groove right.
i know it is kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good place to stream new tv shows online ?
@Terry Waylon flixportal
@Cason Nelson thanks, signed up and it seems to work :) Appreciate it!!
@Terry Waylon No problem :)
Ian’s vocal is one of the things that made this song so beautiful. It wasn’t always so good live but still good. I don’t like johns versions of stone roses but enjoy his solo stuff, hope he goes back to it
No, this is definitely solo. The symbol on the screen behind him is from his first solo album.
Love him

The Stone Roses are new to me; I'm addicted!
@amcardle1 Difference is Noel is a really good vocalist
tru dat.... with the greatest of respect to Brown and Squire of course.
alta version! :D y alta camisa tambien - screw the government.
liam gallagher if he was in the artic monkies
if squire found a band with a good singer he would be much more famous becasuse hes a great guitarist
He's now packed up playing and writing and is concentrating on his art work.... Thank fuck for that. This is a travesty!! Oh, and I am a Roses fan and think as a guitarist and song writer he was a gem... although Marshalls Room is utter gash!
my favorite song from my favorite band. but somehow i like this video better than the original haha
hmmm...
Don't quit the day job john :)
Nahh im kidding. I enjoy his out of tune singing. He's an amazing guitar player as well. Possibly one of my faves.

It can't end on that note... it just can't!
Where is this?does anybody know? As think I may have been there. Manchester Ritz, round about 99?
Sounds like if only one member of sergeant peppers lonely hearts club band (sic) turned up to play the song x
it will take another 5 years for the music world to see what calculated craftmanship this guy has, incredibly intelligent... it's quite scarey!!! but safe
Is this Eddy Tenpole out of off of tenpole tudor?
wow I guess thats why he plays the guitar
He's not bad although I'll agree that Ian's singing made this song special. It's...different but I'd hardly say he killed it.
hmmm nothing beats punk-mod, this guy never lost his punk heart or his mod sense
this guitar solo is fucking awesome
It’s a hard sound 👍
dreadful is the word id use
@riquelme64 He tried that and it didnt quite work. As musically talented as the Seahorses were, they lacked the very things which made the Roses great...Originality, passion and balls.

Looks like the singer from the seahorses on the mic though. Could just of asked him to fill in maybe!
Technically he has a better voice than Brown. But Brown's vocals made the Roses songs that little bit more special.
Mind you this is a nice little cover in it's own way.
its not chris helmes its squire singing
this man knows
I actually quite like this! Not as good as the original obviously, but it's got a certain something about it!
just really lou reedy almost huh....i loved it tho
One of ma heroes and one of the best guitarists of all time but this is shit!!
great shame what happened to the roses as they could have been alot more successfull and cement there place as the greatest band ever but shit happens and theyll never b forgotten
He sings like Keith Richards, .. in a way
oh dear!
cant sing for shit, ian browns voice just suits the roses' music so well. and without it doesn't really work
so you think john has better vocals than reni? and brown was usually off key in his singing, particularly live. most of the time, the one who does the backing vocals or harmonies is a solid singer, sometimes even more solid than the lead singer, or else the backing singer would just mess up the singing all the more. and reni did a wonderful job singing harmonies with brown.
i like it even better than ian does
definately a good version, maybe abit too rock n roll, but squire is still a fuckin class man
I believe this is the seahorses !
your right mate it's lou reed all the way!!!
thats write screw to gov on this shirt
sounds like bowie!!
Its a fairly good version but it lacks the slickness of The Stone Roses. John squire's vocals remind me of David Bowie and Lou Reed. Not bad!
Poor, poor man. Who is laughing now? (Apart from anyone that watches this)
XD read his sweater
HHAHAHA! hilarious. but seriously he is in tune more than Ian.
I actually really like this. Definitely like Bowie
"I believe it's the seahorses" . It's supposition like that that causes war. Do your research kid. This is 2003. Squire hasn't worked with Helmet since 99 and never will again.
Weird but still a better voice than brown and that’s saying something
They weren't as annoying as Squire is (singing) :P
Its his tone, like he's doing a Dylan impression but on meth :D
you could be on to something there. have you seen him singing Fools Gold? he's got a Lennon get up on and making shit of the singing
haha!!!
Ian wrote 90% of the lyrics. What ever you say about Ians singing the Roses would never have made it without him.Proof of the pudding is in 5 successful solo albums for Ian and 2 shit albums for squire.Even his gran didnt buy a copy!

NO NO NO!!! John its all wrong.....Oh!
i like to sound constipated
A fun and interesting arrangement of an already amazing song. Squire can't sing for shit though. This is probably the closest we're ever going to see of a Roses reunion.
Want to repeat that?
HAHAHAH...
The original is an ace song though...
True he can't sing, but he more then makes up for it with his gyitar work
At least he can hold a note even if he sings in a very affected and strange voice
it is shockingly bad!
and i thought ian brown sang badly live
The song doesnt sound right in this key it needs to drop 2 frets, the origanal was amazing and he has ruined it with his singing aswell, he was still incredible in the roses tho, i started playing guitar because of him.
haha
x
I think johns a much better singer than Ian his voice is so much grittier than ians
i know what you mean baout him sounding like bowie, dosnt really work with this song tho.
he sounds as though he is having a rectal exam while singing.
Weird, just weird.
the song was written by squire and brown you plank... squire wrote most of second coming and it was nowhere near as good
he should hire someone to sing
anybody could sing properly (except squire and brown)
Ah no
More like Mark E Smith. At least he's not horribly offkey like Ian.
0:33 ooopppsss shit singer
sounds like hes singing drunk.
Great guitarist!
Prefer Brown's vocals though
Ian brown is no better than john squire its JUST IAN BROWNS A LEGEND AND U CANT SPEAK ILL ABOUT HIM
wtf I love the roses but squire should give up singing ian browns not great but compared to this, well just listen
fook me, but still better than justin bieber
This is shocking - absolutely nothing on the roses. What ever about Ian Brown's singing live, there was a magic about it when he did it, no matter how bad. This is just appalling.
bizarre...........¬
that is DEFINITELY NOT john squire
that was the most stupid remark i've read in ages
omg, what the hell was that? maybe he should just sing punk songs and that should get him a pass to sing like a wanker.
He shouldnt sing this song. Doesn't make it any better.
He's trying to sing like some kinda hippie Lou Reed wannabe. I don't dig....
meh. Brown and Squire cant sing, but i dont think that makes them "shit singers" i think it makes them.. "unique" singers XD
Decent guitarist, but he's no singer. 😕
very stiff vocal
he's good on guitar but his singing sucks
Sounds pish.
