Good question. Tanks are used, but wells are also very common. Tanks, fittings, pipes and spouting aren't cheap and plumbing is not as advanced here. Also, many houses do not have spouting. Due to the pure underground water sources wells are generally preferred in conjunction with small holding tanks.
@@ADirtCheapLifeParaguay it sounds a bit like Goa India, almost no-one has spouting/guttering there either. We cut plastic water pipe length ways for guttering and fixed it to the veranda so we didn't have to run the waterfall gauntlet over the entrance when we were going out or coming home during the monsoons. Our house was/is a very very old Portuguese building, very very basic and sounds a bit like some of the old Spanish influenced homes in Paraguay. Looking forward to your next video. :)

As you know, the Spanish inspired houses generally aren't designed to accommodate the brackets that hold spouting. Apart from wasted water the other issue this can cause is it dumps loads of water around the house foundations and this promotes wet foundations which lead to rising damp.
About batteries for backup power: they are expensive, degrade, stored power leaks, and they are a fire hazard. I propose to have a diesel powered generator. Note that fuel also degrades over time, but much slower than batteres and diesel is much better than petrol in that regard. Powering air conditioning with solar panels makes more sense, as there is solar power when you want cooling and not so much when you don't want cooling.

There's pro's and con's of a big wall, that's for sure. Also, once the robbers jump over they have good concealment. Maybe that's where a dog comes in. Hopefully we will have an announcement about buying a property soon. We plan to do some videos on discussing options for home security.

I live next Encarnacion, I'm from Brazil. I would like to say firstly check the climate before going to Paraguay, it could be terrible in Summer for some persons from cold countries . About Paraguay folk? You will find all, honest and deshonest mainly in services, take care with big promises. In Summer don't expect hardworkes and I agree, is terrible work outdoor with 38°C . Mainly, don't go to Paraguay if you don't have any ability in hand works, mainly in house, you will need it.
My experience is that people in Paraguay are surprisingly honest. For exemple, it has happened to me several times that I have given too much money in the shop or at the fruit market and they always have given me extra back. When you are buying materials there are fixed prices just like everywhere else. In our case preventing "gringo tax" (which I don't really see here) is that we bought the house as a package. We paid to our constructor and he took care of purchases.

Forget about Paraguay it’s a very volatile country and you can ended up in a nasty surprising mass. And luckily if you don’t loose your life in the end. Paraguayans are for themselves and the government doesn’t protect you they look up to their people only. After all you’re a just a useless foreigner and you don’t mean nothing to them. Very, very sad what happened to my family!…My father brought property and settled in Paraguay built a beautiful farm peacefully home life with 7 small kids and one baby on the way. We were living there for about ten years, when they came to our door with guns, told my father to pick up his family and leave by next day, go back to his country to never comeback, otherwise hey would kill him and his family. We left as told. Sadly my father die from a stroke 7 months later caused by the loss of livelihood. My mother has the 8th baby one week after my father died. The saddest part is that they still doing this till these days. It’s a fact and it’s the truth. So please do diligence and beware. Please make sure you have guns if possible, and a good attorney in your home country to protect yourself and your family.
If this happened as you say then that's an unfortunate situation. It's also the first and only story I've heard like that. I don't know who you are referring to when you say 'they'? I can only say, if this were happening on a consistent basis it would be impossible that I would not be hearing about it. Bad things happen in many countries. Paraguay is by far the safest country I have ever lived in.
I have been living in Paraguay for the past 40 years. I don't know where you were living, but it is the exact opposite of where I live. Biggest safety issue here is the condition of the roads.

What was your father’s occupation and his source of income? Who were his business partners or associates?Why don’t you investigate and find out why this happened to your family? So in Paraguay the seller himself holds the deposit? There is no NUETRAL escrow type account to hold these funds until closing? So if the seller disappears with the money? How many years in the Paraguay court system to address getting your money back? On an expensive property 20% down could be significant money. Never be worth more dead than alive in South America!!!

I've become very soft.
What makes it cold is cold inside. If you have 15 degrees outside and inside it's pretty fresh. And 13-15 degrees at night in your sleeping room.

You shouldn't put down more than 10%. Even 5% is often enough of a deposit.
