Those natural heads are, in my opinion, some of the best available. I’ve said it before, and now again, I love the folkloric sound of natural, particularly with these drums.
The synthetic though are a good sound, and very easy to deal with in live situations where high humidity can be a problem, both indoors and out.

Rawhide guy myself BUT as everyone already knows the synthetics offer lots of benefits one of my favorites being the reduced amount of stress in the hardware. One of my major dislikes with synthetic heads is that annoying plasticky sound but YOU actually make the synthetic head sound real good in this video. It actually sounds livelier then the other head. Both have their place and I feel that for recording rawhide wins and one should ALWAYS practice with rawhide and it should be a part of playing.

Thanks a lot for the comparison. As long as the slaps are closed, the Remos sound decent, but with open slaps, I definitely prefer the natural heads. Obviously a matter of taste though.

I have the same Remo heads I thought they sounded very overtoned, I put some gel‘s on the underside of the heads And they sound great! I live in Hawaii and play outdoors most of the time which means the sun and rain it’s worth the sacrifice and we have to make do with what we got. Thanks for all your wonderful videos bro! I really learn a lot from you

The synthetic skin has a ringing sound! Where as the rawhide has a warmer sound! I prefer the natural rawhide as well. I get my second Moperc delivered this Saturday! One more to go! Thanks Eric!

I only like the raw hide head, the synthetic one sounds good but it seems to me that it doesn't sound like a conga

I was surprised at first to see you using a synthetic Remo Head on your Moperc ‘s. However, living in Florida l know first hand the havoc the weather plays on rawhide skins. The comparison you made of both types heads on your Moperc’s clearly indicated the difference in the sound of a natural versus a synthetic skin. Both have a designated use, for a higher quality, warmer and more natural authentic sound the way to go in a controlled environment is animal . For any outdoor application where sound tuning and amplification is a concern, Remo Heads would be the solution. In my case l do have a set of LP Galaxy Congas Q,C,T, with Remo Fyber Skins expressly for the purpose of playing outdoor. I also cannot bring myself to taking my Moperc Mahogany Custom Cubano Q,C,T Congas on the road and expose them to possible damage through unpredictable weather conditions and transporting them from gig to gig. Again the quality of a Moperc Drum under any conditions can not be disputed as one of best by far.

My synthetic heads hold up much better in tone when there are any temperature change. Sometimes my drums may have to stay in the car in its bags for a length of time. Sometimes a little tweak on the lugs may need to bring it into the notes I have it set to but not much is needed.
Great video Eric. Your passion is shared greatly. Thank you.

Rawhide for me…the synthetics sound more Hall like or echo like. Rawhide sound more tonefull / tune full.

Great vid, my friend! A couple of things I noticed is that the synthetics sound really good when tuned up high and played faster. The carry of the sustain on open hits, then being cut off by closed hits sounds appealing to me. However, I can see how some people may not like it. The only times where I have used synthetics during live performances has been for outdoor gigs or open arenas where I needed to project more to blend in better with the overall orchestration.

So I live in the PNW and my manito steer heads just have to wait. It's been raining and is humid x 10 and I play with a loud amped band. I am sad to miss shows playing the manito skins but there is no way. I would drown in the keys and bass and guitar mid range instantly especially if it is extra humid like it has been. So, remo to the rescue. Not my first choice but the right one to even have a chance to keep up with this loud ass band. And tuning when the humidity is so high on the skin skins is rolling the dice. You gotta do what you gotta do. Big respect for the channel and the great vids, Eric! 🙏

Thank you, cool video compares! Raw skin sounds great. Synthetics have a lot of overtones, especially when hitting an open slap, overtones irritate the ear. Nuskin would be closer in sound to natural leather. I wonder how they would sound with music. Probably synthetics would be better read in the mix, especially in loud music.

To me, and of course, depending on the person's experience with their hands and playing, the Rawhide has a rich lower realm sound than the synthetic hide. Not to say that the synthetic is bad or something. The synthetic does have a higher pitch sound, especially with the slaps. Having both is the best option, especially when you have to deal with the weather. Personally, I would prefer raw skins over synthetic skins, especially for recording purposes. Brother, you sound great and it was in Moperc best interest to have you as a representative. Love the way you sound. Thanks for the video, Papa! Juan

Naturals all the way but i get the need for the synthetics on occasion. I just cant get used to the “tinny,” overtones the produce. Just put some on my LP Patatos and it’s a challenge getting used to them but again, time and place. Great educational video.

Definitely hear the difference right from the start in the tone. Synthetic is much higher tone but yet still keeping a natural sound and the rawhide a lower tone but a slight bit more natural sounding

  • @marktaz1

Hey Eric, welcome back! I've often wondered why anyone would use Remos on Mopercs, but between the last video and this, now I know! I've used Nuskyns on my LPs for years after getting tired of tuning four drums all the time, so I'm already a fan. I think both heads sound good, just different. But if both you and Poncho Sanchez both use Remos on Mopercs, who am I to argue?

I like synthetic heads for a variety of frame drums and tambourines, but on congas I've always preferred hides. they just feel and sound better to me. I do have some hides heads on frame drums as well, and sometimes they change up to an octave in pitch in 1 day! overall, both have advantages and disadvantages.

What I noticed in slaps were slaps sound more natural on rawhide and a little tinnier on synthetic.
Also if your in an environment where the temperature stays pretty temperate, stick with rawhide.
If you're going to be in hot or warm climates, synthetic is the way to go.
Found out the hard way during a concert I did recently and wished I had changed to synthetic heads instead.

they both sound fine. honestly don't get the hate with the synthetic heads.. we must realize the sound really comes from the hands and when we play synthetics we adjust to get our sound out of the drum. I have found I get a more natural sound on the remo heads with a 1/2 size moongel above the logo that's with a galaxy fiberglass shell.. just play and be happy congueros and get paid!

Hi, friend! could you do a demonstration of how to play a son up front, or salsa, on the bongos *but playing the bongo *Bell mounted* at the same time, (bongos and bongo bell at the same time)? Making all the sounds of the bell as it is (tum kit tum ki ki tum) etc... and at the same time playing the bongo. Not individually, but with one hand playing the bongo and the other the bell at the same time. Thank you!

In small settings (acoustic guitar, etc.) i like the natural sound. In big band i need the transparency and the extra volume of the synthetic heads. Of course it is very nice that the synthetic heads can hold some rain or temperature. The natural heads do feel better to the hands. The natural also inspire for more depth in the music. The synthetic have more high the natural have more deep sounds. It depends on the ensemble and song what frequencies do serve the band or song best. If you have less force/muscles/expereicne synthetic do give more sound / volume with less effort.
