omgggg the throwback. pops hated video games but loved jetskis. this was one of the few experiences that we could share. I don't really revisit it much, unless it's the soundtrack. thanks for this video. you say no one talks about blue storm, but hardly anyone even gives 64 the credit it deserves and I didn't even know about the GB game before your other video.
I still play this game regularly. The main theme is my ringtone. The music, the controls, the simplicity, the 4 mysterious characters, and the whole aesthetic are iconic. I have been playing Waverace64 for 27 years and it will always be my happy place. Also, I have never been on a jet ski and don't care.
I highly recommend it man. Jet skis are fun as hell. Next time you're on a cruise to the Bahamas or in Florida, try one out ;) The old school stand up ones were really awesome. But, pretty sure they're illegal nowadays or just not made... I may be totally wrong though. Kind of like 3 wheelers that flip on turns, they pretty much only make 4 wheelers nowadays, I believe.
@@jonny-b4954 stand up jet skis are still made and are still legal. it's kind of like your average cruiser motorcycle vs a sport bike. one is for your average rider, one is for the more advanced rider who wants a performance vehicle, so they aren't as widely owned or seen...
Seriously one of the best videos I’ve ever watched on UA-cam!!! You are utterly hilarious!!!!😂 This is my favourite game of all time!!! Thank you for this wonderful gem of retrospective nostalgia!!!!💦
Wave Race can actually be interesting to be revived using the graphically power of the Switch and the Joy-Cons to feel fresh and unique and step into the mainstream.
I really enjoyed the 90's VHS video thing, you captured the feel of those well, and it made me chuckle quite a bit... anyway Jonii with a hat on and hidden off hair is a sight to behold
so i love all your vids so my comments on them are all the same-- this was amazing/hilarious/entertaining etc. really the only unique comment i can make for this one is i love the way you're using your new avi, she's so cute (aka you're so cute) and all the different emotion slides are such fun additions to the videos!!
Great video and very funny, excellent editing - was expecting more introspective about the technology they used to create the realistic looking water but still subscribed!
I've played and greatly enjoyed the Game Boy Wave Race (thanks for doing a video on that game as well) but only have a little bit of experience, but also an enjoyable one, of Wave Race 64. Great to see the game get some spotlight through one of your videos. 2:06 - A shame Slick Wilson didn't return but at least the dolphins did. An extra shame you can't use an octopus to ram into your opponent with this sequel. 3:20 - That name change thing is a very bizarre feature that I worryingly enough thought about just last night. My powers of precognition work in equally bizarre ways it seems. 6:35 - The water was looking impressive enough as is, but seeing the reflections through this woodland and the night lights of the city stage is amazing. 8:02 - I don't think I've ever heard of a racer do a mirror mode quite like this. It's actually pretty cool to see and gives a different dynamic than purely messing with your memorisation of track layout. 11:25 - I had a feeling this game would have tricks but had no idea how to actually perform them. Thanks for the explanation. 17:15 - You can race on dolphins and race against dolphins... clearly they should have been a playable character at this point. An both Slick Wilson and Octopus drew the short straw with no appearances.
Never thought much about this game, but knew it was first party and really early N64, so it's cool to see a fun breakdown of it Also your avatar is soooo cute and I love your hair~
Hey, so I I know this is coming out of nowhere but I just want to let you know the way you make these videos and the way you talk about games, characters, and media you enjoy has given me inspiration and some motivation. I really got into the SMB games a bit before you started your series on them. And I kind of always wanted to share my appreciation for it but I didn't know how to really express myself with something like that. All these videos where you don't hold back on your opinions and really get into the details of the games (including Wave Race and Space channel) got me thinking I could try video editing myself. It's great to be able to share something you're passionate about and be proud of it, I feel the need to thank you for the positive influence, I always look forward to your stuff. So... Thanks.
This might confuse or even anger some, but I'll say it. To me, Wave Race 64 was the Nintendo 64's equivalent game to SNES's F-Zero (yes, I'm well aware of F-Zero X, just hear me out) Wave Race 64 accomplished a lot of the same things original F-Zero did. It was fast paced, simple to pick up and enjoy by yourself or with a friend, was a type of racing game we hadn't gotten before in a home console, and it didn't need a lot of flashy gimmicks to keep the users invested in the game play. All the things the original F-Zero accomplished on the SNES. F-Zero X was a 2nd installment. We'd already seen that concept in 2D through mode 7 before. Although F-Zero X was a GREAT game in its own right, I feel like Wave Race 64 really took the mantle of being the N64's staple racing game that appealed to everyone. I'm so glad Nintendo added it to the N64 list of games on NSO. I still play it WEEKLY for at least a few minutes because it was such a staple of my early teen years and has so many great memories attached to it of friends during the summer coming over and having tournaments in my living room to see who would win that day. Even now, just thinking about that makes me get a big goofy grin on my face.
I've always been interested by this game, but this has peaked my interest even more. Think I'm gonna bite the bullet and get it off the Wii U Virtual Console before it's too late. Great video as always, dude!
Loved this game. The gameplay was fun and the graphics blew anything on the PlayStation and Saturn out of the water, no pun intended. Fun fact, buoys IS pronounced boys after all. Nice video, thanks buddy.
Looking forward to an eventual Blue Storm video. If the static obstacles in the city and arctic stage made you mad, just wait till you experience the sequel where every wave is an active hazard that you have to make micro-adjustments for and the water physics are dynamic to the point of complete unpredictability. Its a flawed game for a lot of reasons besides what I just listed, but I hope you'll be charitable to it. I think its a complete vibe in its own relentlessly cruel way. Or maybe I've just been stockholm syndromed by its aesthetics and variety. Anyway, thanks for covering this. Personal watercraft games are a rare, almost dead genre, and I'm always happy to see someone paying homage to the GOAT. Especially liked the 90s game guide VHS segment and your joke delivery in general.
I was nine years old. I loved Wave Race. I had all of the merchandise and movies. I prayed to jetskis every night, thanking them for the life I had been given. "Wave Race is love," I said. "Wave Race is life."
the water still looks amazing to this day. it style is just perfect and ton of fun. never seen anything like it since. I mean i've seen water in plenty of games but it's always that generic stuff. Waverace had the waves appear random but in fact they always came out the same way around the same location that was epic
Looks like you’ve upped the production values since the last one I’ve seen! Good stuff! I’ve dabbled in this game but your video makes me appreciate it more, and even taught me some things I didn’t know.
Ingot my copy used as well back in the day and the name of the characters were Cloud, Aerith, Vincent, Barret.... My mind was blown away 😂. Because i thought that they were their official names.... But when i realised that you can change the names i refused to change them because FF7 Was one of my favourite games 🥰
I never played that game but now I kinda want to. Sorry I had a PS1 and it couldn't count to 64, I will be ashamed forever Joke aside, what a great video ! Keep it up, it's so good and well made. While being braindead on my couch you managed to make me blow air through my nose and that's the most intense I've felt in the past months. I really love your vids, it's so nice
Just bought the sequel Blue Storm on Gamecube. Wish I had a N64 or I'd have bought this. This is what I have nostalgia for. It's insane how good the water is in these 2 games.
If Jonii and friends are into N64 emulation, there is a game worth looking into: Wonder Project J2. You are an observer who teaches an Ghibli-esque anime girl how to interact with the world, using a bluebird to indicate Yes/No, also drawing Josette's attention to assorted things. Kinda like the Pac-Man adventure game on the SNES? The game has an unofficial English translation, and was an enjoyable play for me.
First videos of you have made ive seen ive enjoyed it and replayed it on loop in the background for hours however its 10 months old and theres not a video made about Wave Race Bluestorm please make one
Oh my god.. I was 11 or 12 when this game came out. The oldest character to choose from in Wave Race 64 is 32.. I thought that was so ancient at the time. I am now 38. Wth have I been doing with my life.. Also I bet my person gets this a lot, but I got over sexualized ego raptor vibes listening to this video. It was a little awkward for my old sensitive ears 15:10 oh my God I remember that terrible commercial being on TV like 10 times a day. I got so sick of it after only a week.
Funny you talk about them being renamed because my copy of wave race 64 that I picked up has the names; ni**abush, a**licker, smallpen*s, and ratbunger. I never changed them lol
Pull down on the stick at the base of a wave then flick up at the top of the wave for max air, push up on the stick to keep the nose of the ski down for top speed. Oh yeah, you can unlock a killer whale to ride as well… yes I’m old lol
Sorry Jon but I can't sign off on owl city being a good artist just because he likes Wave Race. Let me know when the Postal Service declares its love for Wipeout, though.
Excellent video as always, Juanii. I commend your commitment to the craft with your swimperience. However, I am personally offend by the state of your abode. Absolutely revolting.
"It is weird that they made 4 characters hailing from different countries, but 2 of them are American. But that's okay, because I'm American" had me DYING
Finally I can be recognized as the Wave Race legend that I am. Slick Wilson can get bent.
The huge glow up in production value can be felt all over this video in so many ways. Classic Jonii vibe, major new strides in quality 🥰
That means a lot, thank you! :D
and still by far the best racer of this type. Unmatched frankly even now
this is one my my all time favorite N64 games

Another franchise from that time that would give a cool video (and also had a sequel on the gc) is 1080. Played it a lot on 64

Crazy you were able to get Wendy's founder Dave Thomas to guest star in this video! Wonder how much it costed to resurrect him
The sequel, blue storm is really good. I've been playing it a lot lately

I don't get it either. His old avatar was a non-anime guy, way better looking and actually fitting the voice. I still miss that smirk.
