As a 90s kid who grew up in the transition from 2D-3D was a Sega Genesis kid, never had a Saturn or PlayStation but got a 64 around 97-98. This is so cool to see the backstory. This type of stuff should be preserved it’s insane that these companies themselves don’t produce full documentary and archives on these moments in gaming. Waking up on a Saturday at my moms house at like 7am and having a bowl of Chex and playing Zelda and Rayman 2 are easily some of my best and earliest memories
Man, what a video! I can't imagine how much time you spent on this. N64 was the best gaming I ever did. I lived through all of this in my teenage years.
My story with the N64 is quite unique. It was the console I dreamed of having as a child but couldn't due to its high cost. At that time, TV commercials and magazines made you desire it with all your heart. For many of us, it remains ingrained in our emotional memory as the console with the best graphics imaginable. I had to wait 25 years to finally experience the N64 library during the COVID pandemic, on my laptop with an emulator, CRT filters simulating the old tube TV image, and a USB N64 controller - the closest to the original experience I could achieve. I can say the wait was completely worth it. Additionally, I didn't own consoles or play video games after the 8 and 16-bit generations, so even in 2020, the graphics dazzled me as if I were that child from 1996. Paradoxically, despite not having the original system, it has become my all-time favorite console; I hold a special affection for it. I always say it's not "despite" but "thanks to" the hardware limitations and cartridge format that we have such a unique and wonderful aesthetic - with low-poly graphics, smoothed low-res textures, blurriness, fog, pre-rendered images, mixed 2D and 3D elements - everything we love about that graphical style that has become distinctive. The N64 controller was revolutionary and ahead of its time, and to this day, I find it absolutely brilliant. I prefer it over any modern redesign or reinterpretation (I still vividly remember the moment I first held it at a schoolmate's house back in the 90s; it blew my mind). N64 has become a cult object and almost a fetish for me; I've become a huge fan of everything related to the console. Thanks for the video! Regards!

I love and still love my N64. Always will. Though the Nintendo Gamecube will be my favorite Nintendo system ever made and my favorite console of all time. Hahaha I would have done the same, get that doctors note and tack the 3 days into a weekend to have 5 solid days to play! Hey dude, video games are eternal. I’ll be playing and gaming until the end of time! Thanks for the great comment and have a good day buddy.
I got the Nintendo 64 on launch day in North America going to every place that sold electronics. Even though I played the heck out of the system and the games I bought for it, it became apparent to me that I had a love-hate relationship it this version of Nintendo’s system.
In 1998 I got a Playstation for my 12th birthday. Originally I asked my mom for an N64 but Eloctronic Boutique was sold out and the guy swore up/down to my mom that a Playstation was a much better pick anyways -- so that's what she got lol. I wasn't really mad because in the end I loved my Playstation _but_ I really wanted to play Goldeneye and Mario 64 lol.
Oh yeah either way, PlayStation or N64 you had a good console but for different reasons. The only kids not so happy were the ones who got a jaguar or a 3DO 😂
23:53 "Capture Cassette" 64DD had some sort of VIVO capabilities it looks like (basically inputting a 2nd video and audio source, and then saving it to disk)
Still have my childhood 64, that thing is the cockroach of game systems. Almost every system I've owned since has needed to be repaired at least once, but that thing just goes. If Nintendo ever made a new 64 I'd buy it day one
I have the ultra 64 demo cart from the show. It's got the temp mario64 and other games. One of my best pieces in my collection. Kirby was fun on the cart and Mario kart was blah till they fixed it up. Nice vid
I was 12/13 years old at the time the Ultra 64 was announced, I recall all these things happening but had forgotten a lot of it. This was a good recap of how exciting it was at the time. The N64 DD was always a disappointment that we never really got it. I sold my Playstation after I got an N64, but then later bought another Playstation when they introduced the dual shock controller and Gran Turismo. The PS1 was the better system overall, even though the N64 had some good games I feel the quality in games dropped a lot compared to the Super Nintendo. I'm still nostalgic about all these vintage consoles, but I feel like the N64 games have dated rather badly for the most part.
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio I had a friend who’s parents would get him pretty much whatever he wanted, the system seemed pretty sophisticated at the time. obviously it was overpriced though and perhaps not the easiest thing to develop for and quickly got left behind.
"1993-present." proceeds to explain creation of early toys, donkey kong, nes, snes. Weird how all the 70s and 80s happen in 93 huh? Was a crazy year with 2 other decades all happening in that year. Wild times man 😅
@@thatonerampartmain8843thank you. I just wanted to give people where are completely unfamiliar with the company and quick back story. Oh trust me, the “directors cut” had 30 more minutes of n64 game releases I cut 😂
Dont take me too seriously. That was just meant to be a tongue-in-cheek nod title. Its a good video overall and the background state of the company and industry leading up that console generation does add some context what it was like in those time for people that didnt live it which id probably a lot of your audience. That was one of the most fascinating console generations to watch happen.
I did trade a crappy cellphone for the n64 when that came out … best trade of my childhood lol super Mario 64 was insane at this time ! I still have the console in box and still play it !
I would occasionally find random issues at my local library. Somehow I did get mailed one of those pre-release tapes though! I think maybe because my dad registered our Super Nintendo with our address on it. Really cool 😎
I think nintendo can take it a step further by releasing the n64 in the form of its mini consoles, but include everything they wanted, too. The 64dd, the unreleased content for the classic games we've come to know and love. It'd be pretty cool.
Outstanding, entertaining, & informative documentary you've created here - Good job! I'm pretty informed on the subject, but happily ended up learning several "new" facts. Thank you -- SUBBED!
That’s the goal! To bring something new that possibly people didn’t know before! When I make these big documentaries I dig DEEP, it gets exhausting sometimes but it’s fun 😂. Thanks for the sub! I’m happy to have you aboard 😎 have a good one!
I still don't know why they dropped the "Ultra" name from it. I always thought it just sounded a lot better. Better than the Wii U and the "New" series naming fiascos.
The only error I can find is in this otherwise outstanding video: when he says N64 controllers are now compatible with Nintendo switch. That is certainly not the case. You need a special N64 styled new controller
Thanks man. But when I had did that I did mean that there were n64 controllers compatible with the switch. Watching it back now I can easily see why people would think I meant old 64 controllers were compatible. Weird and unfortunate wording.
F Zero X, Micro Machines 64 Turbo.
I enjoyed this video and look forward to more like it! Well researched and presented, although I'm equally impressed by how you handle your comment section. "The UA-cam algorithm is strong with this one...."
Awesome! Thanks so much man! As you would expect, these videos take a bit of time to put together but I’m already working on a documentary of a defunct candy company called “Amurol”. many people know of their products but not much about the company themselves. I hope to have it out late February if not early March. I’ll be putting out some mini documentaries sooner than that and a bunch of soda reviews. So I always have something happening, I hope you can stick around for it! Take care bro and have a good one! 😎
Brilliant this video will hit 100,000 views and keep growing I don't know when that will happen, but mark my words you put in that much time and effort into videos you see big time results.
I’ve got plenty of them in the back catalog man! Check out the “documentaries” playlist on my page, sit back and enjoy! And thanks dude, I’m always working on one in between all my food reviews and other wacky videos I make
U didn't mention the Famicom recall with the square buttons. My favorite piece in my collection.I still wonder if Sony and Nintendo actually made a PlayStation if it would look and be the same as it does today. Imagine Nintendo backwards compatible PlayStations.....damn
The 64DD is a good example of what would have happened to the Nintendo PlayStation. It would have never been a thing but a gimmick Nintendo would have canceled or treated badly anyway and there would be no PlayStation today.
I love these videogame history videos, always interesting. Wonder what things would have been like if PlayStation didn't take so many developers away from Nintendo. Seeing final Fantasy and others on N64 would have reshaped the world in a way. And I believe the first part adds needed context to how the N64 came to be
Thank you so much as to what I was trying to do with the first 7 or 8 minutes of this. When you tell a story, even if it’s not exactly the subject, it’s always good to lay a foundation to give the subject (nintendo 64) the weight it deserves. Yeah those RPG’s PlayStation won over killed the N64’s longevity. The few Zelda titles kept it alive into 98 and 99 but man. I feel it’s a system that never got to realize and harness its final form of power.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH BRUV! I just saw that this broke 100k! You saw before me, you're always there to celebrate brother and thats real king moves. Thank you. Hope youre feeling better!
Nintendo would pass on 32 bits in the 1990s, but would eventually make their 3rd generation Game Boy handheld, the Game Boy Advance, a 32-bit console...
I remember getting frustrated that Nintendo had been pushing back the release date. I was out of highschool, working and eager to play. I went to live abroad in South America for a number of years for business and first saw the N64 down there at a friends house in 1997 and played Mario 64. I was later in Santiago in the middle of town and saw an N64 display showing Turok and I was blown away by the graphics. What irritated me, after the N64 release, is that Killer Instinct was never released on the N64. Not the version in the arcade. If you play the arcade version, I distinctly remember the arcade saying something along the lines of "soon for release on the Ultra 64".
Oh yeah, I remember getting turok for my birthday and loved the game. Not just for the gameplay but the music of that game is great! I was always confused by that voice announcing “coming soon to Nintendo Ultra 64”. My mom worked at a bowling alley in the 90’s and I always hung out in the arcade area where both the cruisin usa and killer instinct arcades were there. I was 9 at the time and didn’t have a Nintendo power subscription so I had no idea what was going on about the N64 until it actually came out and I saw a demo kiosk at a Target store. Still even after its release I still thought a Nintendo Ultra 64 was out which was better than the regular Nintendo 64. Man was I wrong! Making this documentary solved and pieced together so many mysteries and questions I had growing up!
I have mixed feelings on the N64. I grew up on Atari 2600 and Colecovision, finally got an NES in 87, was a full on video game enthusiast who got the SNES upon release, then got an N64 in May 1997. I had Mario and Turok and initially loved them and beat them both (had to cheat for Turok). But the novelty of 3D quickly wore off and I found new games too big to explore and too time consuming and I lost all interest in getting the new consoles upon release. I still play some old stuff but my serious love of video games died with the N64. I did later buy a used Goldeneye because it was mandatory, and I think I got NHL 2000, but I haven't touched anything N64 related in over 15 years. I'm 2D for life. Except for Twisted Metal 2, the only PS game I own and the sole reason I later picked up a used PS1.
I remember PSX game being about 150-200 of my local currency and the N64 ("Doom 64", to be precise) was 375. So,yeah: they've beat counterfeiting i guess?
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio Greedy fucks. There are only 2 effective ways to fight the pirates: 1) MMORPG 2) Reasonsble price to great quality ratio.
At this point I think Nintendo will keep releasing the switch with just upgraded cards. I think the end of new consoles may be coming near. I hope not but seeing that the switch has now been out for 7 years with nothing new in sight, who knows!
@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio I really hope they make like a "super switch" that can play regular switch cards (since the switch library is legendary) but will also Build on the power to potential around 16gb of ram (steam deck ish levels of power but well optimized)

Hahaha I would have done the same, get that doctors note and tack the 3 days into a weekend to have 5 solid days to play! Hey dude, video games are eternal. I’ll be playing and gaming until the end of time! Thanks for the great comment and have a good day buddy.
High effort video, thank you for this!
Thanks for the huge praise! I’m happy you liked it! 😎🤘🏻
Excellent documentary dood
Thanks brother 😎🤘🏻
I got the Nintendo 64 on launch day in North America going to every place that sold electronics. Even though I played the heck out of the system and the games I bought for it, it became apparent to me that I had a love-hate relationship it this version of Nintendo’s system.
I can totally understand. I felt the same way when I’d see games like resident evil on PlayStation and we’d get “Glover” 😂
The only kids not so happy were the ones who got a jaguar or a 3DO 😂
She chose WISELY
Nice Documentary Bro. You should make more.
Thanks brother, I’m planning on it!
Yoy can tell this was a labour of love fantastic documentary 👌
Oh yeah, Nintendo 64 feels like home to me. Thank you and I’m glad you liked it! 😊
23:53
"Capture Cassette"
64DD had some sort of VIVO capabilities it looks like (basically inputting a 2nd video and audio source, and then saving it to disk)
Amazing documentary, thank you. 🙏🏻
Hey thanks bro! I appreciate it! 😎
There was a total of 22 N64 Virtual Console games if you count the Japan Exclusive Custom Robo V2.
Thank you for this work!
No problem! 😎 thanks for watching!
Very well put together man. Keep it up.
Thanks brother. Will do. Working on a documentary on a very obscure video game called “Sim Refinery” now. Should be out by the end of this week!
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadioI'll keep my eyes peeled!
@GarlicMonoxide right on man! Thanks!
12:18 Man I feel bad for people who paid $600 for a 3DO. That’s nearly $1K today.
I remember those days and seeing the commercials for them. Never knew one kid who actually had that system lol
Wild times man 😅
As much as I loved the background of Nintendo it felt like padding for the video, no offense to him though he did awesome it was just unnecessary
I just figured it’d be fun to include the origin story. People like myself would appreciate that. Lol
I also forgot that toy was called the ultrahand. Any bets the tear of the kingdom ability was and intentional nod to that?
Game and watch was my intro to video games
Just take a drink every time you hear Nintendo 64 or N64 or just 64 😂😂😂. Great video though lots of great info.
😂😂 that’ll get me needing to go to the bathroom in no time. Thanks man, I appreciate it 😎
I did trade a crappy cellphone for the n64 when that came out … best trade of my childhood lol super Mario 64 was insane at this time ! I still have the console in box and still play it !
I subscribed to Nintendo Power from issues 17 to 100. I still have my DKC and N64 VHS tapes! Pretty neat advertising for the time.
I would occasionally find random issues at my local library. Somehow I did get mailed one of those pre-release tapes though! I think maybe because my dad registered our Super Nintendo with our address on it. Really cool 😎
I had the Diddy Kong racing tape.
I think nintendo can take it a step further by releasing the n64 in the form of its mini consoles, but include everything they wanted, too. The 64dd, the unreleased content for the classic games we've come to know and love. It'd be pretty cool.
That would be awesome. I have sim city 64 but no 64DD to play it on so that’d be a godsend.
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio put me in coach @nintendo 😂
Great work 👍 I really like your content.
Thanks man, I appreciate that! 😎
I remember seeing the DD in magazines and waiting for a release and never got it 😂😂😂 it was just all hype
Amazing documentary
Thanks man! 😎
The only reason why I bought N64 was to play “007 Golden Eye” 👍🏾
If there was one game to choose from out of the lot, yep 007 Goldeneye would be it
Super Mario 64 was my first game and Cruisin USA was my second game.
Awesome man. Same as me and my bro on Christmas Day 1996
Really well done.
Thanks man! I appreciate that! 😎
Even though I do love the Playstation and Xbox consoles, Nintendo consoles will always be number one in my heart!
Love this vid❤
Thank you! 😊
F Zero X, Micro Machines 64 Turbo.
And Wave Race 64 is still a solid game!
Yup! I ain't gonna Flinch on this one. This one needs to keep growing. 100k views. LFG!!!!!!!
Nice video bro bro
Thanks my dude, I appreciate that 😎🤘🏻
Nice vid!!!
Thank you so much! 😊
Quality content!
Thank you! 😊
you can even play SNES games on this beast. All you need is an everdrive or some sort of flash cart, and sodium64
Damn kickass video
Thank you! 😎🤘🏻
AHA!! looks like my man "All Out" here fused part 1 and part 2 together brilliant
The plan all along! If you want it all in one sitting during dinner time with the family. Here it is!
Brilliant this video will hit 100,000 views and keep growing I don't know when that will happen, but mark my words you put in that much time and effort into videos you see big time results.
Well done:)
Thank you sir!
It's like my entire life flashed before my eyes.........
you should do more documentaries!
I’ve got plenty of them in the back catalog man! Check out the “documentaries” playlist on my page, sit back and enjoy! And thanks dude, I’m always working on one in between all my food reviews and other wacky videos I make
nice video, EQ that audio though my friend needs more low end
U didn't mention the Famicom recall with the square buttons. My favorite piece in my collection.I still wonder if Sony and Nintendo actually made a PlayStation if it would look and be the same as it does today. Imagine Nintendo backwards compatible PlayStations.....damn
My favorite Nintendo console, Nintendo 64
Same here too! It’s the best
The 64DD is a good example of what would have happened to the Nintendo PlayStation.
It would have never been a thing but a gimmick Nintendo would have canceled or treated badly anyway and there would be no PlayStation today.
I'd be curious to see what the alternate universe was like where N64 used disc-based media ...
Let's freaking goooooooooooooo!!!!! We need this to get to 1m but Let's shoot for the big 200k next first!!
🛡🗡❤️🙏
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH BRUV! I just saw that this broke 100k! You saw before me, you're always there to celebrate brother and thats real king moves. Thank you. Hope youre feeling better!
Was like “89? NES was out before that right? Ohhhh 1889, dam”
Strange at 24:37 the controller pack is shown being put in backwards.
Wow! I’m glad you caught that. Looking back I’m wonder why they showed it that way.
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio I was wondering the same thing. They probably wanted to showcase the front of the Memory card with the sticker on it.
@ebenezerspludge8369 yeah you’re right, as the other side doesn’t have much to offer in the looks department
Is that Hornberger in the N64 commercial??
4:07 The Famicom was not Nintendo's first game console.
Nintendo's first gaming console was the "Color TV-Game" (1977-1983).
Famicom was the first game console that actually mattered
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio That's subjective.
44:52 - OMG, is that Yoshiaki Fujiwara? 😅
Nintendo would pass on 32 bits in the 1990s, but would eventually make their 3rd generation Game Boy handheld, the Game Boy Advance, a 32-bit console...
Nostalgia
I could never win the race down the slide versus the penguin but the music was cool
It’s definitely a pain, I remember I had to push forward on the analog stick and hope for dear life I didn’t fall off
14:54 That's cool
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio That was a well put together video.
Thanks man! 😎
Thanks
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching
58:38, interesting
I remember PSX game being about 150-200 of my local currency and the N64 ("Doom 64", to be precise) was 375.
So,yeah: they've beat counterfeiting i guess?
😂😂😂😂 exactly, Nintendo had no idea how far counterfeiters would go.
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio Greedy fucks. There are only 2 effective ways to fight the pirates:
1) MMORPG
2) Reasonsble price to great quality ratio.
Doom 64 was sooooo different than the PC dooms I was used too. I remember the presentation being so dark it was hard to play.
They also had N64's at McDonald's at one point
Oh I remember those greasy controllers like it was yesterday
All the days when Nintendo cared about the power of their systems. Rip switch when the switch 2 coming out!?!?!
@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio really enjoyed the video man! Great effort!
You didn't over modding or peripherals??
