The Yule goat's origins go back to ancient Pagan festivals. The 'cornus' element in Capricorn's name refers to the cornucopia or 'horn of plenty' with its promise of a bountiful harvest to come. While its origins are unclear, a popular theory is that the celebration of the goat is connected to worship of the Norse god Thor, who rode the sky in a chariot drawn by two goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr. The last sheaf of grain bundled in the harvest was credited with magical properties as the spirit of the harvest and saved for the Yule celebrations, called among other things Yule goat.

In mid Sweden, we have a lot of pictures and stories from around late 1800s to early 1900s where people dressed up as the Yule goat and pranked people, talking about the goat throwing chopped wood through the door if the family had acted badly. They hanged the tree from the ceiling instead of putting it in a "foot", and there was no Santa Claus _(later with Santa, the goat brought coal instead to naughty kids and Santa had presents)._ Just a lot of food, with the most important, a whole, cooked pig with it's apple in it's mouth at the center of the table.

That’s interesting, we in Holland had exactly the same tradition, but in more recent times it was changed to a moor called “black pete” and some people schmink their faces black and are Saint Nicholas helpers who bring the presents from the Saint to the good children (in the olden days when people weren’t such wimps, the bad children got “de roe” a stick where Pete would smack the naughty children with, sometimes throwing them in the bag of Sinterklaas and bring them to Spain, where he is from). Fun to hear how all Germanic countries have this in common!

My father had a goat that was put on the Christmas tree every year. He never explained what that was about he may not have known however I am grateful that you have explained it now I understand why my father had a Christmas goat. I don't know where that goat is is now I kind of wish that I had it

Just starting to explore Norse paganism. I have always identified with my Danish ancestry (ancestors came from what is now Westjutland - just found out that they came from what is described as a locality - it’s too small to qualify as a village!). Just bought my first Jullebukke - thanks for the video - it helped to place this tradition into context.

I am an American but my family is Scandinavian and I grew up in a Scandinavian area in Kansas. I grew up with everything Scandinavian and I have all my Yule goats. My friends think it's strange when They see my goats and Dala horses. I would love to have them eat a Yule dinner with my family, it would be shocking. We also celebrate the end of the wheat harvest at the end of July.

I’m from Holland and when going out years ago I met a gorgeous girl at a local pub with the blondest hair (even by Dutch standards) and the brightest blue eyes. I remember she was from North-Dakota, and that didn’t surprise me at all knowing that a couple of northern states (also Minnesota) are very Scandinavian!

I wonder if there is a connection with the Capricorn star sign, as that is represented by a goat (sea goat specifically) and if there is a meaning behind why the goat is used as that sign around this time of year.

My family is Norwegian-American and emigrated from Norway in the 1860's. I inherited my Julebukk from my great-grandmother. We never stopped practicing the mix of Christianity and paganism that we brought over with us. Even though it is more often practiced in Sweden, I would love to see a discussion of the pagan origins of Santa Lucia and the darker origins of the Tomte or Nisse.

Wheat and oat straw were seen as being symbols of abundance and prosperity b/c grain was the most hardy and abundant crop. It was also feed and bedding for livestock during the winter months, mattress stuffing for humans, and it would be spread around the base of winter crops to keep the soil insulated (like how people use dried leaves or mulch in their gardens now). 🥰

Can you imagine the conversation between Thor and Odin?
Odin: “You’re going to take the gifts to the children.”
Thor: “Why is it my job?”
Odin: “Maybe you shouldn’t have befriended the goats who deliver the gifts.”
Thor: “Well, now I’m gonna eat them.”
Odin: “Then you’ll have to resurrect them so they can deliver the gifts. So just suck it up, kiddo, and deliver the damn gifts!”
Thor: *stomps off, mumbling to himself*

an important correction: dolmens and menhirs are not celtic. In fact, they are much older, most of them dating back to the megalithic culture of neolithic Europe. Some later stone circles, such as Stonehenge, have been built by Indo-European people, but still in times long before we can speak about any 'celtic' cultures.

Also, I call Christmas “Arminius Day.”
Those Norwegian Spruce from Teutoberg are now the tree of choice for community Christmas trees.
And then when you know he put the three legionary Aquilas he captured at the tops of the three tallest Norwegian Spruce in the forest…
Oh, and even the words and symbol of the Christmas Tree itself is actually SUPER Esoteric and related to the Triple Crown, which is mastery of body, mind and spirit. Arminius accomplished a literal triple crown by destroying 3 full legions and seizing their Aquilas. There’s a hand symbol for the five pointed star which is also a symbol of the triple crown.
You make a C with your index and thumb and then the middle ring and pinky are the number 3. So C3 on both hands, then put them together and you have a five pointed star.

The Gothic Migrations to the west actually begin with a migration south from Scandinavia right into the heartland of Scythia. You don’t let that many people move to your capital without them being YOUR people, you know what I mean?
And then there’s Rok Runestone in Ostergotland which specifically mentions Theodoric the Great, Rex Gotho.
Wulfilla’s Gothic Bible features Futhark letters, I know offhand that the symbol for the number 900 is the Futhark letter T.

Odin was father christmas. The House-God - Hus-tomten was actually more accepted and a replacer for the Julbock due to the church. Christianity made every pagan symbol that could not be integrated into christian tradition the symbols of satan. The snake of wisdom, The wise-old lady became satans handymen, Her symbol the pentagram became the symbol of Satan, Thors goats, the Julbock became the face of Satan, Frejas black cats became the cat of the witch and bad luck. Even Jultomten got ridiculed. In Sweden we say "Tomtar på loftet" about someone we deem crazy. But Lucia and Jultomten could be associated with Lucia in Italy, the christian saint and S:t Nicolaus.

Thats a new one. Still today in Sweden even after 100 years of socialism christmas is about family and the one day everyone tries to get home ro be with their relatives. But for the old norse it was about raising the dead?
Yeah. I see now how everything thought to be a mirror of the realm of the dead now is considered to be about? Nissen/tomten was thought to go between the worlds but now it's something else. Wtf?
