    My cultural anthropology prof always summed things up by saying "the gods/spirits are/were the representation of natural forces that do weird crap. Sometimes the ancestors wanted them to keep doing weird crap, and sometimes they might ask that energy to kindly piss off. The gods names are just representative of a concept or idea, and their myths are meant to explain it." He'd follow it up with a myth from the culture we were learning about at the time, and open it up for discussion.

    Still trying to shake this image of Thor being specifically an angry ginger with a hammer who likes ale, Odin being specifically this old one-eyed wizard with a spear, a big hat, and two pet ravens and wolves, Freyr specifically being a dude with massive genitals lol, etc., but I’ve noticed certain Norse myths actually make a lot of sense in a metaphorical sense. Ragnarok, for example, is actually a realistic look at what the end of the world as we know it could actually be like. Obviously the world probably isn’t literally going to end with a bunch of gods and monsters and undead warriors fighting and killing each other but catastrophic climate change and natural disasters likely will happen, and war, strife, and suffering will follow. A literal fire giant isn’t going to literally burn up the world, but in a few billion years the sun actually will expand into a red giant and incinerate the Earth and the other inner planets in our solar system.

    • @whispersinthedark88
      @whispersinthedark88 2 роки тому +27

      Thats honestly more of the chriatian interpretation of Ragnarok. It wasn't meant to be the "end of the world" but an essential part of the cycles of life, death and rebirth. Its reincarnation on a larger scale, the earth just like everything else goes through these cycles. You can compair it to some of the big changes the earth has gone through during times like the iceages , asteroid hits. The great die offs and extinction events like the dinosaurs which made room for the mammals that survived eventually becoming mammoths ,sabertooth cats + who dominated until they also died off and were eventually replaced my us and the creatures we share the earth with now.
      This is why understanding reincarnation is essential to understanding these stories/myths and the beliefs behind them.

    • @OrIoN1989
      @OrIoN1989 2 роки тому +7

      I think multiple astroids will "eat" the earth several times before the sun dies out. Just like it killed the dinosaurs but did not kill all life. And the cycles goes on as foretold. You could also say that a nuke, volcanic eruption or wildfires is quite similar too, and could be aspects of surtr, the fire gigant.
      Life on earth will probably never die out, because there is lifeformes that enjoy living in very hard environments, even if the sun died out.

      @@OrIoN1989 For sure, wasn't the Fimbulvintre starter as a result of a volcanic eruption? Then you have all the great flood stories coming from different people and cultures around the world. If you look into the oral history of the Australian aboriginals that go back something like 50,000. years you will find that they recorded many of these events that were previously unknown to science and as such were dismissed as just fanciful stories . Despite many of those same ppl who blew off the tribal history as made up were Christians who believed in far crazier things (gotta love that bias).

    Your considerations are always interesting, thank you.
    Our old belief is a non-dogmatic experience religion. That is, there are no dogmas for what is right or wrong belief, thus the individual believer can define his own religious belief. In our old belief, how one behaves was far more important than what one believes in. There's only one, you can trust, and that's yourself. Earthly life is considered more important than what happens after death. The gods exist for us and not us for them. The only requirement the gods make on man is to show respect by sacrificing to them (blote) at certain times. When my mother was a little girl, it was common to slaughter at home on the farm. When the slaughter was over, Grandma took a bowl of blood and went to a large oak tree that stood on the farm. First, she sprayed blood on the tree trunk, and the rest of the blood was drained at the root. This was hush, hush, my mother said, but they had done it, as long as anyone could remember back in time.

      Spread the truth, document it , PROVE IT , make it irrefutable. That You too will become DANGEROUS TO THOSE WHO ADMIRE US IN LIES AND ENSLAVE US IN SOCIALISM !!!!!!!!
      But because they are lying, its possible to expose them.. This is thier obsolete deal. But by comparison..we have nothing to hide, we have no reason to lie. And we wouldn't want to...even if we could. Truth is a far superior weapon than deceit. Its a weapon which is denied to them. And in the end it will be the decisive weapon, that destroys them completely.

      Interesting. I slaughtered chickens and turkeys for the first time about a year ago and in doing so the blood had covered the trunk of a tree we did it at, running down and along it's roots. It became apparent to me, like the sensation of hair standing on end, a shiver perhaps, that I had just witnessed something of deep significance but no longer fully understood it. It was an unusual experience. But I believe I encountered a link to something deeper, beyond, spiritual for lack of a better word.

    This was great and should be required watching for those getting involved with heathenry. I get so tired of dealing with those who simply substitute Jesus with Odin, or the dead worldview of atheists who mock "the worship of comic book characters" as they put it. I often explain to rational and open minded people that the energies we call Gods don't fly around in human form, but that the human form ascribed to them is what makes them relatable and understood by humans. If they could manifest in a human form, this is how they would appear for example. The appeal of the old Germanic worldview is that it requires so much research, introspection, and truly deep thought. It's not the simplistic and barbaric worldview that has been promoted by abrahamic religions and the dead world scientific adherents ( who are often just as narrow minded and zealous as Christians). The life lessons, humor, curiosity about the world and universe around us and our relationships within it is what makes heathenry so much better.

      "( who are often just as narrow minded and zealous as Christians)" Well said! I have often noticed that atheists can sound as zealous in their "religion" as the Christians they rail about. I've even come across some Wiccans who rant as much towards Christians as the Christians do against the Pagans. It's as if you could just insert Christian, Pagan, or Atheist, into the appropriate parts of the rant and it's all the same lines.

    • @Pixie3p14
      @Pixie3p14 Рік тому +2

      @@WolfQuantum Yep this.       @Pixie3p14 Рік тому +2

      this makes so much sense to me. I consider myself broadly atheist but I don't want to be part of any of the "Atheist Communities" I've come across because they often tend to be just as narrowminded and bigoted and condescending as the harmful christian group I left. Their thinking remains religious even if they claim not to believe in any gods.

      @@Pixie3p14 I would consider looking further into animism as a possible bridge between how we routinely process our world objectively and what might constitute the spiritual. I find the artificial separation of mind and body, flesh and spirit, and other dichotomies as originally presented in the realm of ideas vs forms (Plato); to be present even in arguments by atheists. Really, atheists and abrahamists are two sides of the same coin when you think about it.

    Man, I am glad I found this channel. Grew up an atheist. Started to explore Paganism recently after some research/discoveries about my family's ancestry. I have been getting fully engrossed in reading about it and watching videos and for the first time starting to feel a connection to some religion. But then I stumble on a channel with a guy in the woods, claiming he is seeing the Gods in human form in the woods around him, smiling and waving to something off-camera, where they are apparently talking to him. Then he starts yelling to Odin and its like...the fuck am I getting into? So nice to have a level-headed, logical explanation for what the gods truly are - really helps pull me back in. I live close to the ocean. I've always felt the power the sea has, the destruction it can cause but also I have seen the beauty of it, and benefitted from the food and work it provides. Even as an atheist I couldn't deny that "energy"/force. One that is the same where I live as it is thousands of miles away for people who practice other religions. Despite years of thinking gods were a foolish idea I can now totally understand and believe in that force being a god - and accept it is one that has been given a name and even depicted in human form in some stories. I visited the beach recently for the first time since starting to get into Paganism, and just sitting in the sand with eyes closed and listening to the wind and waves really made me have one of the first "spiritual" moments I have ever felt. It gave me a feeling of strength but also an understanding of not having full control. It made me think about how that applies to my life and how I could deal with something I had been struggling with recently - and I appreciated how it did that. And I am excited to read more about it and how it has been felt/interpreted in other ways in Norse history. THAT feeling, that connection to the gods, is one I can believe and practice. THAT is what I want out of religion. But the idea that the sea is Njord who actually some guy, and if I go to the beach he is like going to appear in human form next to me and give me some wisdom and pat me on the back or something really defeats the whole purpose of what gods should be and the power they hold, in my opinion. It honestly makes me question what some believers of Paganism are looking to get out of it. Do they really feel a connection to nature? Or do they care more about the idea of the Gods visiting them at night looking like Chris Hemsworth than they do about the actual forces in nature that they truly are? Which honestly is pretty insulting to the gods if you ask me. Anyway, rant over. I am excited to learn and watch more of your videos.

    When you mentioned people naming swords and ships and the like when talking about animism, something inside my head clicked. Ever since I was a child, I would name a lot of things, be it a stuffed animal or a toy car. As I got older, I started writing stories and drawing characters that appeared in these stories, who I also gave unique names, attributes and concepts they represent. Whenever I gave an object or an intangible concept that is a character in a story a name, I also subconsciously attributed something to them that is similar to the deities and spirits that live amongst us. Giving them names helped me connect to them in a different way than just going "oh this is a lego minifigure that I own."
    So when I give something a name, I "animate" them into something more than just a clump of matter in a manner of speaking. Now that I have realised that this practise is quit similar to -if not a sort of form of- animism, something clicked in my head and unlocked a whole new perspective on the deities and spirits around me. Now, I won't go around and give a name to every little thing I see, but I will meditate on the idea behind this practise I've been doing since childhood and apply said idea to the world around me.
    Thank you for the video and providing this new perspective, very nice 👍

    The more I learn about the gods, the more they feel similar to the Valar from Tolkien's world. The Valar where simply "powers of the world", demi-gods that had chosen to leave their place outside of the world and go down to "Arda". The part that reminds me of them is that these gods had no native form of their own, they where more like energies or powers, they could choose to take on a physical form if they wished (would be similar to us putting on clothing).
    Only exception to this was Melkor (later called Morgoth by the eldar), he became stuck in a certain physical form after have exerted much of his power to corrupt and destroy arda. In short, the gods are less physical entities and more like powers that control and influence the world.

    This is a great video, but I have a major contention with the idea that the Hellenic pagans lost the true meaning of the myths and were literally worshipping the gods as superhumans. Perhaps the common folk did, but the Neoplatonic pagan philosophers and priests such as Emperor Julian, Sallust, Celsus, Proclus, and etc wrote works saying that the Gods were nonhuman divinities as recently as the late roman period. Sallust for example writes this in his book on The Gods and the World which I recommend every pagan read and Celsus as well states this in his polemic against christianity debunking Saint Paul's lecture that he gave where Paul said that pagans were literally worshipping the idols. The reason pagans built the idols is not to say that the gods are literally the super humans depicted but to depict them in a way we can understand that captures the spirit of those particular Gods so they can better connect with that spirit during sacrifices and ritual. Perhaps you were just saying that the commoners lost the meaning which is debatable and theres no real way to prove that, but if you are saying the priests and philosophers did then that isnt true this is well documented in their own words.

      Very cool. Did not know some of that. Will give those a read. It depends on the time too right? And from what I have read, it seems like the greek philosophers at the time were quite split? Like half leaning pagan and the rest moving to pure atheism? After the greek dark age at least? But im not super familiar with that history.

      @@norsemagicandbeliefs8134 Oh yea for sure, there was significant debate between the Greek and roman philosophers on this but the prevailing philosophy among classical philosophy at the time was Neoplatonic Paganism which held that the Gods were nonhuman divinities and I really think you would find a lot of value in it. Its the philosophy Emperor Julian the last pagan emperor subscribed to and is one of the most advanced pagan theological systems. Thomas Taylor's translations of the classics at Prometheus Trust would be a good place to start in looking into it. These are all books written by pagans in pagan times and the ones I mentioned earlier were written when they were competing with Christians.

    I think that the importance of portraying the gods in a way that reflects the people and cultures that worship them, is the preservation of a people's identity - be it through their genetic, cultural or artistic attributes. Sure, Thor and Zeus are both representation of nature's might, yet they are also the essence of life of the Germanic people as Germanic people, and of the Greeks as Hellenic. You might say that caging the ideal of a god in a human form is flattening, maybe even childish - yet there is a very deep connnection between the shape of a God to a certain land, and to it's native people.

    I lived with the Lakota for many years, and they have always believed everything to have energy and life force, to be respected and part of the sacred circle. In Oglala Lakota belief Thor would be equivalent to Wakinyan, who is part of the Thunderbeings. Gods are not seen as human figures, even today, this is true. Lakota have always seen the gods as energy, with no form. Gods are the rocks (Inyan), Sun (Wi), Sky (Skan), and Maka (Earth). Even, Wakan Tanka (the great mystery) has no beginning and no end. It is the life force that the whole universe, plant, human, animals, minerals, and ether, is made of.

    I agree with this mostly. Only exception I'd take is that I see idols as not a loss of spirituality per se (though it might have lead to that as an unintended consequence) but just humans being humans, and like the myths the idols were there for us. The myths are there for human understanding, the idols for human visualisation. Idols also can have some spiritual utility within an animist framework, at least according to the work of Rune Rasmussen of Nordic Animism.

    I am from the Netherlands (Noord Holland) and when I was a little child a lot of children where afraid of heavy storm whit Donner and lightning. Than we where told that it where the clouts how where bumping to together. Later when we learnt at school about the viking gods (it was a catholic school the '50th ) and Donar or Thor was fighting against the Ice Giants with his Hammer to return the Summer. later we moved to a small Fischer town near the IJselmeer (what is now a polder), near the harbor. Some winters it was so cold that they drive with cars over the ice. But than on the end of the winter, by wind from the north, the ice was breaking and moving towards the harbor and that was suds a loud terrible sound from the Ice Giants and i hear it in my bed with my pillow over my head. That was the moment that i understood why people where making story's about unexplained things in nature to comfort other people. From that moment i realist that the christian story's about Saints where the same and with 12 year i told my parents that i would no longer go to the church anymore. Now i am 76 and learnt a lot from you, thanks.

    People need to realize that we are trying to understand the infinite with finite minds. We paint this with the things in our own histories and social/cultural finite understanding. It has always struck me that the gods, especially the Greek pantheon, in a lot of stories embody very human characteristics and issues. With all the jealousies, egos, and lusting, they end up sounding more like unenlightened. even spoiled humans than deities. What I have also found across paths is that the more enlightened consider deities to be avatars that embody certain characteristics or traits. We focus on those deities when we want to enhance, or bring those traits into ourselves. For example, you would focus on, or do rituals to Kwan Yen, the goddess of compassion, if you wanted to become more compassionate.
    I liked the point you made about the gods being energetic and not human-like. I have found that the mystery side of spirituality has a lot in common with quantum physics. Dr. Bohm actually made the statement that mysticism and quantum physics is the same thing in a different language. Decades ago I was a deacon in a fundamentalist Christian Church. After additional decades of spiritual study of a mixture of various religions and spiritual paths, combined with my own meditations and experiences have coined the term for what I am. I just tell people I am a Quantum Metaphysicist, but it doesn't pay much so I have to do other things. Look under the hood of most spiritual paths in the world and you will find a thread of truth and similarity that runs through all of them. I appreciate the series and the approach.

    I have no argument about anything you said concerning idols and feel that animism is the answer to many problems in the modern world, however, it is entirely possible that idols and the myths created around the gods were used trying to memorialize the gods that actually walked among the people. The idols and legends always look to the past. This fits with all religions. Very similar stories from separated cultures and tribes. Odin for instance, as the wanderer, may be seen in other tribes on different continents. I dont have the capacity to believe or not believe in the Annunaki theory but it is intriguing. For what ever reason the gods (or or maybe Annunaki) leave and the belief system grows. Sometimes for the better, many times for the worse. Just something to ponder. Thanks for this video.

The German philologist and philosopher Friedrich Ast , wrote in his book " Geschichte der Philosophie" in 1825, in Landshut, Bavaria in Germany that Odin or Wodan, Wotan was a god that came from the East and actually overtook the role of God All Father from a local Norse Deity called Alfadur. Any comment on that? Keep up the good work, tak.

      @@sigynfoxy69 wtf they tried to basically attach the Norse gods to witches, and with no explanation..That is really messed up.
      I went to a private Waldorf school in the US back in the 80's where I had an elderly German woman as a teacher. She started telling us stories from Norse Mythology in kindergarten along with other European folklore. As we got into grade school we learned more when we covered different types of religion, and she taught it as being equally as valid as christianity or any other religious beliefs. Now that Im thinking about it I don't know if other teachers did the same since they were allowed to cover what they wanted for the most part. Its possible that she taught us what she knew and felt to be important, which came from the stories that she learned when she was young back in Germany during the 1930's -1940's .
      But beyond just that the whole school had celebrations every year , to name a few we had May day when we would dance around the maypole weaving the ribbons, Santa Lucia come winter and then came Saint Nicholas with his nasty little buddy Knecht Ruprecht who gave the bad kids real chunks of chole...lol ,those made for some great memories.
      I knew that other kids in the US didn't have the same experiences that I did , but I never even considered that kids in Scandinavia and Germany wouldn't be taught these things in some shape or form.
      That's honestly quite sad to hear, yet it reminds me how fortunate I was to hear those stories and have those experiences as a kid. It seems that most schools in western countries need a big makeover so that they teach kids about their own roots, cultures,and folklore along with real life skills.

      Physical focus points are still used today. Like in meditations, some people chant. Or in natural labor women bring photos or other objects with them to focus on as they give birth, in order to manage pain and focus on breathing. In therapy, people are told to visualize their " happy place" and sometimes they have an item that represents their happy place ( a seashell if the happy place is the beach, a photo from a vacation etc) Idols are useful as tools to help one visualize the intangible. And, the very act of using a physical focal point *changes that object* as we now know. It's called the Observer Affect.
