    The idea of "role playing" in Souls games is one of my favourite things about it too! My character now is of a player made Covenant me and a friend are working on. We were soldiers of Lothric, and even in undeath we defend our homeland by invading on the High Wall and in Lothric Castle.

    I only really played the first Dark Souls, and only invaded another person's world once. I guess I was supposed to kill them and get experience, but I just waved at them and they waved back, then I followed them around, doing nothing because I didn't seem to be able to attack enemies. Then they got killed after a couple minutes and I got a lot of experience points. Didn't really do anything to earn it.

    I absolutely loved playing DS3 while wearing the Fallen Knight Set while 2-handling a Great Corvian Scythe. It made me feel like I was a grim reaper knight that had no history or ties to the Dark Souls world that was going and putting this already tired franchise out of its misery. Ironically while role-playing like this I ended up falling in love with the DLC though.

      My favorite in the series is ds3 as well. Bloodborne and ds1 aren't far behind, but ds3 is the best middle ground between the other games. It had great gameplay, amazing scenery, interesting lore (very connected to ds1 lore which is a plus imo), and, as mentioned in the video, the best looking armors and weapons. I also absolutely loved the fire/ashen one theme.

    This is a great example of why I love this channel, most youtube channels, when talking about games talk about why they are good, why they're bad and if you should buy them, but here they look at parts of the games that may be overlooked or less talked about, mayb even more philosophical topics, while still being funny and enjoyable, keep up the great work guys!!

    A very interesting point. I actually played Dark Souls 3 before Bloodborne. When i played Bloodborne, I was floored by the pace of the action, the cool weapons, and all the WTF stuff happening, but sorely disappointed by the lack of fashion possibilities.

    I remember watching this video when it first came out, but didn't get round to actually playing the game until a couple of weeks ago. Completely forgetting about the point Mr Lees made about the Abyss Watchers cosplay, but i've found myself doing the exact same thing! The full undead legion set, Farron greatsword and just helping people do the tricky bits i've done, and it's the most satisfying feeling ever. The expression of happiness the Jump for Joy emote can portray is astounding. I havn't sunk the time into rest of the Soulsborne series so this game has surprised, entertained and challenged me, in the best ways possible.

    I reckon if games want to have armor that changes your stats, the armor should be one item when equipped you cant even see, like its invisible, then you can just wear whatever clothes you want and it wont have any effect.

    Great video Matt! I'd heard of the Fashion Souls phenomenon, but didn't (or couldn't) see the appeal. I love that it's a series that seems to give people many different experiences-even if it's infamous for giving exactly one (a brutal, hardcore power trip for internet weirdos). I'm fascinated by this kind of video or say, "You Died" from the wonderful Keza MacDonald.
    I even played DS1 for the first time last year BECAUSE of this kind of analysis (until I got to Ornstein & Smough, anyway!)

    I felt pretty much the same as you. I played the first game almost religiously and more of the second than I should have so by the time 3 came out I was pretty sick of the whole formula. I spent more time invading people and following them around as a chair or pretending to be a friendly phantom than actually playing the game. Invading in the catacombs, cutting down the bridge, leaving the host to fight the massive skeleton army that spawned, then waving as they started panicking and inevitably dying was also quite fun. I would often throw down a ton of prism stones and just lie down when I got invaded and most invaders would lie down next to me or just goof around with various gestures. The most fun part of the game for me was definitely interactions with other players since the game itself couldn't offer any fresh experiences

    I love this video. Variety of fashion has been a major aspect of Souls games from the very beginning. Even Demon's Souls featured some incredible outfits. For me personally, a Souls game without a wide choice of fashion isn't a proper Souls game, as such variety enables role-playing offered by very few other games.

    I think it's a pretty major red sign at how bad modern RPGs have gotten that an action rpg is actually the best role-playing experience on the market. And it is too. I don't think anybody played it without dressing up like the coolest looking enemy to them and consequently sort of play like them while going through the game and meeting other people you can only gesture to.
    That is role-playing at its purest form. And yet, there are all these pure RPGs with these deep characters they've put so much work into and you just don't really care about enough to get invested in. All these deep character creation systems, but nothing comes close to the elegance and ease Dark Souls ushers you into its world maybe even without you knowing it. I can only imagine how great an actual RPG would be with that kind of seemingly emergent captivation of personal investment in your character.
    How much better would fallout 4 have been, for example, if you were free to imagine and behave as you wanted and the game's mechanics (like dialogue) were better designed to accommodate that. Of course that was already possible in its prequels, which really goes to show what's been lost, and Dark Souls is the proof there is still value in what was lost in this newer market.

  • @louisxyz1
    @louisxyz1 7 років тому

    I love dressing up in games too. I always hate it in any rpg when you have to choose between the cool clothes and the good clothes. Skyrim exemplified this for me. I thought all the early level gear looked miles better than the naff daedric stuff. To be honest if someone made one of those Disney dress up flash games for nerds I'd play the hell out of it.

    • @thelaughingman4791
      @thelaughingman4791 7 років тому

      In Skyrim, if you had sufficient blacksmithing skill you could improve lower tier armors to the point where they hit the armor cap anyway, so you could wear whatever armor you liked as long as you didn't mind investing in a skill to do so. similarly if you were a mage with a highly developed enchanting you could wear whatever clothes pleased you instead of the typical mage robes.

    If it had the weight and physics of Dark Souls 1 combined with the inspiration, tone, and sensibilities of the common mind of Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3 would be much more amazing than they are. I loved the environments in all the games, but Dark Souls 2's tend to be more imaginative. Dark Souls 3's combat, story, and a whole lot of other shite, is more or less unoriginal, and it really slips into more high fantasy tropes and cliches. Of course, considering even Dark Souls 2 ignores a lot of the lore from the first game, and Dark Souls 3 still tries to innovate on the now, tried and true formula, you can only do so much. The qualities of all the games are astounding and there are certainly strengths and weaknesses to all of them. I just wish the DLC for Dark Souls 3 had more to offer in and of itself.

  • @PlayDusty

    I feel you missed an opportunity to relate "dressing up" with Monster Hunter. Whether for stats. Fashion. Or trial. I'm interested why you skipped this comparison? Is it the niche audience? Or another reason?

    I love DS3 but for so many reasons! You are right though! Some folks cosplay, some pvp, some do impossible challenges and some just rerun with different weapon/skill use.
    The point is: we make a game great or bad based on our willingness to use our imagination to increase the enjoyment!
    This was the key to why text adventures like Zork are fondly remembered!
    Make something more and it will be more :)

    I actually just watched a video (Why Clothes Matter by School of Life ua-cam.com/video/8da1nXckEy4/v-deo.html) that discussed this, only IRL. They explained that clothes can in some ways portray a part of you that most people aren't aware of. I think this is just as true in video games. Games are limited by their mechanics as to what you can do, so by exploring who your character is through clothing can be another avenue of expression. In a game like Dark Souls where you have some interaction with other characters, it also conveys your personality (or your current play style) to other players, but in single player games it can be just as beneficial for your understanding of a character. For example, when I used to play Bully my favorite outfit was the one that mimicked Bill Murray's in Caddyshack. Why? Because it provided some levity and interest to an otherwise super-serious, angry teen. It probably made the game easier to play because I didn't have to be confronted with his primary character traits and it added some personal, custom personality to the character.
    Anyhow, love this video. Thanks, and keep on keepin' on!

    I truly believe DS3 is the best in the series. If you felt nothing, I’m inclined to attribute that to souls fatigue more than the fact that the game is objectively worse. I think it takes everything from the first 4 soulsborne games and perfects if. Bloodborne had a better story and different gameplay mechanics but DS3 is absolutely a masterpiece

    dark souls 3 > bloodborne > dark souls 1.
    dark souls 3 is pretty much taking what made bloodborne and dark souls 1 and improving on them, bosses quality improved a lot, the areas are overall great, but ofc theres a price to pay, they are more linear, theres more costumization, theres more weapons, armors and equipment even tho i dislike using the graphics reason, pretty much dark souls 3 is the best looking one, the gameplay improved as well, and something really minor, youre not forced to start a new game+ straightly after you beat the final boss. the only not epic things about dark souls 3 tho are ashes of ariendel, the bonfires placement can be dumb sometimes, and sadly as in bloodborne and dark souls 1, there are bosses that arent good at all. but at least thankfully more than a half of the bosses are overall really good.
