You can tell how experienced Randall Tarley is in war even in the face of a dothraki horde he kept himself calm and collect where as everyone else was scared. He also was the only one to beat Robert baratheon in the battle of the trident.
Battle of Ashford is where Randyll won but truth is that the battle was more of a stalemate...Robert withdrew before the bulk of the Tyrell forces charged in cus he wouldn't stand a chance then.
Imagine if Dany was a bit more careful with them and used some actual tactics instead of constantly going in all “Leroy Jenkins” every single time. She had so much potential...just wish she hadn’t been constantly surrounded by “yes men”...

André Serra No, throughout the whole series, with the exception of one short stint right near the end when it was too late to do any real good, she was surrounded by people who continuously encouraged her arrogance and sense of entitlement. They didn’t dare tell her no, didn’t dare point out how badly the way she used her dragons might backfire, they just kept telling her how amazing she was and how she should EXPECT everyone in Westeros to just automatically bow down to her. Then when that didn’t happen, she started to snap. And back to the original point: the only time she demonstrated any real sense of tactics with her dragons was her second attempt at getting past Euron Greyjoy’s blockade. And she only figured out AFTER she got Rhaegal killed because she thought she was fucking untouchable.
Every time I watch this I get goosebumps and I can't help but smile. It's so bad ass! The acting is amazing. Even Dickon Tarly's face as he watches the men next to him burn alive the fear in his eyes is subtle but perfect. The 1st time I watched this I remember hearing Robert Baratheon's voice saying you don't want to meet the Dothraki in an open field and also Barristan Selmy saying Dragon's win wars not soldiers. Both of those lines are proved to be true here.
In fairness the Dothraki numbered 100,000 (this isn't made clear in the episode, but that is the official number stated for their numbers; though the TV show apparently keeps respawning their numbers so to speak, which is impossible) As much as I love Robert Baratheon, he was actually only partly correct to give so much credit to the Dothraki.
Like most battle scenes in the show, its too small. How many men are on the Lannister side tehre, like 200 tops? That is absolutely nothing in terms of battles.

This period of Middle Ages warfare that it’s based on was a period of just less people in general, Ancient Rome era saw the last huge armies before this period. And then with gunpowder and industry armies started getting massive again. But GOT armies will always be relatively smaller

The Logistic of resupplying your army is expensive. Sun Tzu's Art of War talks about if your army march 1000 kilometer to wage war, you should only expect 10% of your army actually making it to the destination.
Lol something similar happened when I was playing Grand Tactician Civil War my army got jumped by the Confederacy while on the march almost got my army captured and killed to a man lol.

If you read any military history you'd know that forming a line or a square with shields and long spears or in later years with pikes or muskets/rifles with bayonets is one of the more effective ways to stop a cavalry charge! Horses tend to shy away from big pointy things that can hurt them!! Granted not 100 percent perfect! If a horse was hit and fell into a line that might give the horsemen a chance to get in and rampage before the defending troops closed up. Obviously having airpower negates that whether dragon or A-10 supplied!!!😁
Thanks for reminding me about the dragon. I am arguing that, assuming Drogon wasn't there, this battle is different than your usual early medieval heavy cavalry charge that had 1-2 ranks of horses. Here it seems that because there are 100k horses, the result would be more like a "Buffalo jump" in real life where the Lannister infantry is the cliff and the whole herd is gonna crash right off it (or into it). Even if the front line of horses refuse to charge, there are still probably 50k rank of horses behind them and they can't all stop at once.
What would've been cool af is if when Bronn was about the shoot Drogon Viserion and Rhaegal drop from the sky behind him and kill him. Would've been a better death considering Plot armour was 100% in favor or Bronn and Jaime this episode

Tactically speaking, Drogon should have come in along one of the flanks parallel to the Lannister defensive line in his first pass. He would have broken the flank a lot easier.
All for show, wasnt any logic or tactic to it. The only thing that was a natural advantage was drogon over head distracting and causing the army to break rank, played right into the dothraki style of fighting, chaos- easy to slaughter the lannister army
Drogon was a much as a character as many of the human players. His devotion to Dani was powerful and when she died, it's almost as if he was holding the accursed Iron Throne responsible as the cause as he melted it down. And then, not killing Jon Snow but gently picking up Dani's limp body in his claw and flying off was a wondrous thing to behold.
1. Pod, Tormund and Davos die at Winterfell 2. Tormund dies saving Brienne, Jaime carries her unconscious from the field, Sam is forced to flee the battle to save himself 3. Arya and Bran die bringing down the Night King, making Sansa and Jon the last of the Starks 4. Sansa tells the Hound she was always a wolf 5. Dany's forces return to Dragonstone only to be ambushed by Euron from inside the castle 6. Cersei plans to keep Missandei hostage until Tyrion seemingly threatening her unborn child triggers the execution 7. Jon comforts Dany and promises to be there for her 8. Jon and Dany land on dragons at the Red Keep after surrender. Cersei loyalists kill Rhaegal and Dany burns them to save/avenge Jon, who she doesn't realise has survived. Children die as collateral damage 9. Jaime is not captured by Dany, but makes it to the Red Keep on his own in time to be crushed with Cersei 10. Tyrion resigns as Hand and leaves to be Lord of the Rock 11. Jon kills Dany on his own initiative and escapes on Drogon 12. Tyrion can speak freely at the Council without a plot hole because he's there as a liege lord 13. The Council crowns Gendry, several Westeros lords want Jon dead before he's sent to the Wall, and Dorne and the Iron Islands are granted functional autonomy on condition of marriage to their neighbour lords (Gendry to Princess Arianne, Yara to Tyrion)
Against a shield wall the Dothrakis wouldn't make much headway with a frontal charge - their horses should not have slammed into a line of soldiers with sharp spears. Instead pepper the Lannister army with arrows from a distance then charge in with heavily armored cavalry armed with lances, like the Parthians did in the Battle of Carrhae against the Romans. The dragon does change the equation slightly! :-)
The sound right before the dragon’s fire 👌 chills. Ugh this show was so good!! I hate that it had to end the way it did. Season 8 started so good. Then after The Long Night it went off the rails. 🥺 Still makes me sad.

I remember watching this and thinking to myself, "Fuck a line you want your men in a square formation with your archers in the middle against lightly armoured cavalry" Then Drogon showed up. GG WP
What always bothered me was that the Dothrakis are light cavalry with swords and should not be able to stand against heavy infantry with spears that significantly outrange their swords. In theory, they can still crash through heavy infantry with spears in formation, but they will take huge loses in men and horse before they can get close enough for a swing of their swords. Light cavalry is best used against disorganized troops or non-melee troops. To be fair, having a dragon does allow you to punch holes into an infantry line and create chaos that the light infantry and exploit. Deanerys should have really attack from the Lannister rear and flamed the entire line, rather than at one point.
Dragons and Dothraki Screamers that every child from Westroes heard of at bedtime when they didn't eat their broccoli and were naughty. All the most horrible things were true and are standing in front of them. This battle was lost from the beginning.
I know they didn’t do this because of budget but it would have been so cool to see her bring all 3 dragons and see the three of them fly through the clouds and charge. Because really we didn’t really see all the of the dragons fighting as one that often we really only ever saw drogon but it would’ve just been bad ass for her to bring all her children and completely decimate the lannisters
Daenerys flies the dragons as if she was in telepathic communication with them. They go where she wants them to go without her needing to say anything. So why does she need to say "Dracarys"?

I’m just wondering how the horses didn’t scare & run away from the dragon. Maybe dothraki hoses get used to it. But Lannister horses should have been scared to death in this scene.
If Jamie is such a good general, how come he didn’t have pickets and riders screening his exposed column? A horde of horsemen just dropped on him and he had no clue they were coming, plus why did the Dothraki charge in tact sections of the shield wall something horses will refuse to do.

Tactically speaking, Drogon should have come in along one of the flanks parallel to the Lannister defensive line in his first pass. He would have broken the flank a lot easier.

All for show, wasnt any logic or tactic to it. The only thing that was a natural advantage was drogon over head distracting and causing the army to break rank, played right into the dothraki style of fighting, chaos- easy to slaughter the lannister army

Drogon was a much as a character as many of the human players. His devotion to Dani was powerful and when she died, it's almost as if he was holding the accursed Iron Throne responsible as the cause as he melted it down. And then, not killing Jon Snow but gently picking up Dani's limp body in his claw and flying off was a wondrous thing to behold.
This attack had a better strategy than the Long Night episode. This is so sad
Imagine what the 8th season could have been, but instead we got Dumb and Dumber.
1. Pod, Tormund and Davos die at Winterfell
2. Tormund dies saving Brienne, Jaime carries her unconscious from the field, Sam is forced to flee the battle to save himself
3. Arya and Bran die bringing down the Night King, making Sansa and Jon the last of the Starks
4. Sansa tells the Hound she was always a wolf
5. Dany's forces return to Dragonstone only to be ambushed by Euron from inside the castle
6. Cersei plans to keep Missandei hostage until Tyrion seemingly threatening her unborn child triggers the execution
7. Jon comforts Dany and promises to be there for her
8. Jon and Dany land on dragons at the Red Keep after surrender. Cersei loyalists kill Rhaegal and Dany burns them to save/avenge Jon, who she doesn't realise has survived. Children die as collateral damage
9. Jaime is not captured by Dany, but makes it to the Red Keep on his own in time to be crushed with Cersei
10. Tyrion resigns as Hand and leaves to be Lord of the Rock
11. Jon kills Dany on his own initiative and escapes on Drogon
12. Tyrion can speak freely at the Council without a plot hole because he's there as a liege lord
13. The Council crowns Gendry, several Westeros lords want Jon dead before he's sent to the Wall, and Dorne and the Iron Islands are granted functional autonomy on condition of marriage to their neighbour lords (Gendry to Princess Arianne, Yara to Tyrion)
The look on Jamie’s face when he sees the dragon over the horizon is the same as when a soldier in a tank sees an A-10 coming in low.
But if you see the A-10...it's not there for you.

Against a shield wall the Dothrakis wouldn't make much headway with a frontal charge - their horses should not have slammed into a line of soldiers with sharp spears. Instead pepper the Lannister army with arrows from a distance then charge in with heavily armored cavalry armed with lances, like the Parthians did in the Battle of Carrhae against the Romans. The dragon does change the equation slightly! :-)
The Dothraki are SO badly researched/written. Light cavalry with no lances, few (if any) archers. lol

What always bothered me was that the Dothrakis are light cavalry with swords and should not be able to stand against heavy infantry with spears that significantly outrange their swords. In theory, they can still crash through heavy infantry with spears in formation, but they will take huge loses in men and horse before they can get close enough for a swing of their swords. Light cavalry is best used against disorganized troops or non-melee troops. To be fair, having a dragon does allow you to punch holes into an infantry line and create chaos that the light infantry and exploit.
Deanerys should have really attack from the Lannister rear and flamed the entire line, rather than at one point.

I know they didn’t do this because of budget but it would have been so cool to see her bring all 3 dragons and see the three of them fly through the clouds and charge. Because really we didn’t really see all the of the dragons fighting as one that often we really only ever saw drogon but it would’ve just been bad ass for her to bring all her children and completely decimate the lannisters

If Jamie is such a good general, how come he didn’t have pickets and riders screening his exposed column? A horde of horsemen just dropped on him and he had no clue they were coming, plus why did the Dothraki charge in tact sections of the shield wall something horses will refuse to do.
